Building an Arts Community in Old Town a word about our creative process It

seems

like

just

yesterday

that

renovation

work

began

on

Key

West’s

historic

Armory

building,

headquarters

for

our

campus

at

the

corner

of

White

and

Southard

Streets.

From

late

2006,

when

The

Studios

of

Key

West

was

formally

established,

our

board

and

staff

have

overseen

the

transformation

of

a

familiar

physical

space

in

a

quiet

corner

of

Old

Town.

But

beyond

that,

we’ve

successfully

begun

to

transform

the

cultural

and

spiritual

place

under

our

care.

We’ve

done

this

not

in

solitude,

but

by

inviting

local

and

global

creative

people

to

spend

time

under

our

grand

Italianate

roof:

to

make,

talk,

share,

produce,

sing,

learn,

create.

To

help

us

build

a

bold

new

community... After

two

years,

an

antique

drill

hall

is

buzzing

with

events,

workshops,

lectures,

exhibitions,

and

visitors.

Studio

artists

are

at

work

upstairs,

writing,

painting,

and

assembling.

From

month

to

month,

visiting

artists

and

cultural

managers

populate

our

Mango

Tree

House

and

Old

Town

residency

cottages.

Significant

new

arts

partnerships

have

been

forged.

People

whole-heartedly

embrace

our

mission

to

explore

the

creative

process

and

unique

sense

of

place

here

in

the

Conch

Republic.

As

a

result,

The

Studios

of

Key

West

has

quickly

grown

from

an

idea

into

a

nexus

of

artistic

development

and

experience.

And

in

only

a

few

years

we’ve

managed

to

become

the

newest

contributor

to

the

island’s

cultural

identity.

This

transformation

has

happened,

in

part,

because

we

keep

the

doors

open

to

everybody,

welcome

new

ideas

and

partnerships,

and

rarely

say

“no”

without

first

considering

all

the

wonderful

implications

of

saying

“yes.” I’ve

been

executive

director

of

The

Studios

of

Key

West

for

almost

two

years,

and

feel

energized

when

I

walk

through

the

Armory

doors

each

morning

and

grateful

as

I

close

them

up

at

the

end

of

the

day.

Because

in

between,

I

get

to

work

with

an

incredible

staff,

a

genuinely

dedicated

board,

and

thousands

of

other

people

who

value

the

role

that

creativity

plays

in

our

lives

and

in

our

community.

Together,

we

get

to

breathe

new

life

into

an

old

building—create

pictures,

stories,

and

home-grown

artistic

produce

for

Key

West.

We

get

to

establish,

at

the

end

of

the

American

highway,

a

dynamic

cultural

hub

for

the

21st

century. I

sometimes

ask

myself

“how

did

we

make

this

place

happen

so

quickly,

so

profoundly?”

Then

I

look

around

and

find

fresh

paintings

in

the

main

hall,

local

video

projects

on

the

screen,

mixed-media

works

coming

down

the

stairs,

and

neighbors

stopping

in

to

check

our

schedule

or

renew

their

membership.

I

hear

musicians

practicing

in

the

main

hall,

a

board

committee

meeting

to

plan

special

events,

a

visiting

artist

gliding

by

the

sculpture

garden

on

his

bicycle.

I

remember

the

contractors

who

helped

us

rehabilitate

the

Armory,

the

generous

people

who

first

joined

our

Patron

Society,

and

the

writer-in-residence

who

finished

her

second

novel

entirely

in

our

Mango

Tree

House.

These

folks

are

the

answer

to

that

question.

They

are

The

Studios

of

Key

West.

And

they

deserve

our

thanks

for

the

great

start

we’ve

been

given. And

if

you

are

not

one

of

them

yet,

please

visit

us

soon.

Bring

your

creative

person

to

this

rejuvenated

building

and

become

part

of

our

ever-growing

community.

And,

in

one

simple

word

that

might

just

explain

it

all...yes! Eric

There

 are

 always

 two

 characters

 in

 a

 the

 and

 the

 artist.

 This

  workshop—taught

 by

 visiting

 Curt

 an

 about

 how

 we,

 as

 artists,

 define

  the

 character

 in

 a

 portrait.

 What

 is

 it

 that

  we

 are

 trying

 to

 say

 about

 our

 subject

 and

  ourselves

 when

 we

 create

 a

 visual

 rendering

  of

 a

 person?

 If

 we

 are

 working

 on

 a

 large

  project

 or

 portfolio,

 how

 do

 we

 approach

  each

 subject

 as

 they

 relate

 to

 the

 greater

  collection?

 This

 workshop

 will

 begin

 by

 looking

 at,

 and

 talking

 about

 various

 artists’

 vision

 toward

 Richter

 will

 it

Residencies at TSKW time and space on a tropic isle The

Studios

of

Key

West

has

been

rapidly

developing

our

campus

and

programming

over

the

past

year,

and

recently

launched

a

residency

program

in

the

island’s

Old

Town

neighborhood.

We’ve

begun

inviting

interesting,

established

creative

people

to

spend

time

in

Key

West

as

artists,

producers,

and

cultural

managers-in-residence.

Throughout

the

2009

year,

our

campus

and

cottages

in

Old

Town

will

play

host

to

a

diverse

mix

of

creative

producers,

artists,

and

directors

of

cultural

organizations

from

around

the

world.

About

our

residency

program A

residency

at

TSKW

is

a

respite

away

from

the

usual

working/living

environment,

and

can

be

arranged

from

one

to

six

weeks.

We

provide

completely

furnished

living

accommodations

and,

when

available,

dedicated

studio

space

for

visiting

artists.

Time

at

TSKW

can

include

a

project,

presentation,

screening,

or

outreach

idea—or

it

can

just

be

a

retreat-like

hermitage

with

the

space

to

think

and

work

in

solitude.

It’s

our

goal

to

invite

remarkable

creative

people,

extraordinary

emerging

talent,

and

those

working

in

the

margins—and

to

support

their

projects

and

newfound

inspirations.

And,

of

course,

we

hope

they

return

from

a

Key

West

residency

with

a

closer

connection

to

our

small

tropical

island

and

the

unique

sense

of

place

at

the

end

of

the

American

highway. TSKW

is

a

member

of

the

Alliance

of

Artists

Communities

and

Res

Artis

(the

international

artist

residency

consortium),

and

draws

its

inspiration

from

places

such

as

the

MacDowell

Colony,

Djerassi

Resident

Artist

Program,

Yaddo,

Anderson

Ranch,

and

Atlantic

Center

for

the

Arts.

Our

program

proceeds

from

their

long-established

and

successful

models,

but

seeks

to

expand

the

mandate

of

the

artist

colony—and

try

new

things

that

might

expand

the

notion

of

a

creative

residency.

Expressions

of

interest

and

project

proposals

are

always

welcome,

and

there

is

no

application

form

or

fee.

History

of

the

TSKW

residencies In

January

2008

we

hosted

our

first

ever

artist-in-residence,

Helsinki-based

American

photographer,

Curt

Richter.

He

helped

us

launch

our

primary

artist

cottage,

the

Mango

Tree

House,

and

installed

his

major

show,

Faces

&

Stories,

in

the

Armory

main

hall.

While

here,

Richter

also

shot

new

portraits

of

people

about

the

island,

using

his

large-format

camera

and

the

studio

we

provided

him

on

our

campus.

TSKW

is

working

with

Richter,

and

the

Key

West

Literary

Seminar,

to

craft

that

new

body

of

portraits

into

the

2009

exhibition

project,

Still

and

All.

Since

Curt’s

inaugural

stay,

we’ve

hosted

New

Zealand

musician

Lorenzo

Buhne,

Chicago

artist

Mike

Lash,

Canadian

installation

artist

Helen

Verbanz,

and

Miami

new

media

artist

Charles

Recher.

Our

campus

has

also

seen

recent

residencies

by

author

Kristen-Paige

Madonia,

who

wrote

her

second

novel

entirely

at

the

Mango

Tree

House,

mosaic

designer

Jenifer

Strachan,

musicians

Dean

Wareham

and

Britta

Phillips,

and

prolific

Brooklynbased

painter

Steve

Keene.

Expanding

beyond

the

artist

residency,

TSKW

has

pioneered

a

new

short-term

residency

intended

for

America’s

leading

arts

administrators,

museum

curators,

symphony

directors,

and

other

creative

producers

(who

are

not

eligible

for

most

standard

residency

programs).

We

call

this

the

Cultural

Manager

Residency,

and

are

now

planning

a

dozen

or

more

for

the

2009

year.

As

a

result,

in

2009

our

island

will

play

host

to

the

head

of

the

Maine

College

of

Art,

a

Dean

from

the

Chicago

Art

Institute

School,

the

cultural

affairs

officer

from

Madison,

Wisconsin,

and

directors

of

residency

programs

from

across

North

America.

Innovative

residency

partnerships

are

also

in

the

works

with

Martha

Wilson

and

Franklin

Furnace,

to

support

the

avant-garde

organization’s

annual

Fellows

by

offering

time

on

our

campus

in

Key

West.

TSKW

is

also

developing

exchanges

and

new

residencies

with

New

York

City’s

extraordinary

Gershwin

Hotel,

small

theatre

troupes

and

stage

projects,

and

various

city

cultural

affairs

offices

around

the

country.

Our

next

area

of

residency

develop-

in

will

focus

on

exchanges

American

And

beyond

that,

TSKW

is

considering

the

residencies,

for

up

to

6

artists

and

cultural

managers

from

the

same

city,

as

a

collective

from

one

is

small,

and

most

people

get

around

on

There

are

Cuban

and

on

every

other

It

is

80

degrees

the

and

a

is

never

far

away.

Flowers

bloom

year-round,

fruit

trees

proliferate,

and

lizards

and

geckos

rum

rampant

throughout

our

Protected

from

the

American

by

120

miles

of

and

other

islands,

Key

keeps

one

in

the

cherishes

its

modern-day

creative

such

as

Judy

There

is

a

ubiquitous

population

of

wild

scattered

about

the

island—reviled

by

some,

celebrated

by

others.

The

island

also

contains

cruise

ship

by

day,

Bacchic

revelers

and

lively

bar

scenes

by

night,

boutiques

and

drag-clubs

along

Duval

as

well

as

an

assortment

of

fishermen,

divers,

bikers,

native

outlaws,

beach-goers,

and

free-spirited

It

is

a

Projects & Initiatives an island of inspiration ARTISAN HOLIDAY FAIR

CURT RICHTER/ STILL AND ALL

ART-O-MAT

In

2007,

just

before

the

holidays,

TSKW

invited

over

a

dozen

local

artists

and

craftspeople

to

show

their

work

as

part

of

our

Walk

on

White

evening.

We

called

it

the

Holiday

Artisan

and

that

evening

began

a

new

annual

tradition.

Each

Fall,

we

invite

artisans

from

throughout

the

their

work

during

the

then

we

encourage

our

The

result

was

a

In

conjunction

with

we’ve

 2008

As

 an

 abstract

 painter

 working

 professionally

  since

 the

 mid

 1980’s,

 I

 am

 always

 surprised

 by

  the

 changes

 in

 my

 work.

 My

 recent

 canvases

  seem

 to

 have

 a

 vibrant

 mind

 of

 their

 own.

 The

  light

 and

 joyful

 feel

 of

 my

 newest

 work

 came

 in

  part

 from

 the

 sunny

 feel

 of

 my

 studio

 at

 TSKW.

 I

  feel

 free

 to

 come

 and

 go,

 leave

 the

 work,

 lock

 the

  door...

 being

 there

 is

 a

 wonderful

 thing.

I

 came

 to

 Key

 West

 from

 New

 England

 eighteen

  years

 ago.

 Having

 been

 the

 facilities

 coordinator

  at

 TSKW

 for

 some

 time

 now,

 I’m

 thrilled

 about

 being

 one

 of

 the

 newest

 Studio

 occupants.

 I

 primarily

 work

 in

 three

 dimensions,

 and

 my

 sculpture

  and

 installation

 pieces

 involve

 threads

 of

 history,

  layers

 of

 interpretation,

 surprise,

 light,

 texture.

  Most

 recently,

 I

 have

 been

 exploring

 ceramic

 and

  naturally

 activated

 sound

 elements.

I

 have

 been

 painting

 in

 acrylic,

 gouache,

 and

  watercolor.

 I

 work

 outdoors

 to

 gather

 visual

  information,

 then

 elaborate

 with

 it

 in

 my

 studio.

  Sometimes

 just

 the

 geometry

 or

 color

 will

 grab

  my

 interest

 and

 the

 result

 will

 border

 on

 abstraction-

 sometimes

 the

 results

 look

 rather

 like

 an

  illustration.

Lisa Esposito In

the

past

my

work

has

derived

from

abstracted

images

I

see

in

my

head

rather

than

from

an

external

reference.

As

I

have

returned

to

painting

over

the

last

few

months

I

have

been

using

photographs,

photocopies,

and

objects

as

references

for

what

I

paint.

I’m

excited

to

see

what

this

new

process

will

yield.

Hays Blinckmann Utilizing

the

traditional

still

life,

I

have

created

a

personal

narrative

through

chosen

objects

in

order

to

explore

the

feminine

characteristic.

In

combination,

the

objects

highlight

the

various

aspects

associated

with

the

“modern”

woman:

education,

sexuality,

steeliness,

irony

and

humor.

Although

these

articles

are

personal,

they

do

not

exclude

the

viewer

but

invite

the

onlooker

to

find

familiarity

and

common

experience.

Letty Nowak

Mark Hedden

Guillermo Orozco

For

me,

painting

is

a

constant

give

and

take

of

the

visual

information

that

each

of

my

subjects

hold.

As

founder

of

the

Lemonade

Stand

Gallery

in

Bahama

Village,

I

was

also

involved

in

creative

community

programming

and

the

support

of

Key

West’s

local

artists.

I’ve

also

completed

hundreds

of

portraits

of

island

characters,

as

part

of

my

Faces

of

Key

West

project.

I

write

both

fiction

and

non-fiction,

but

only

the

non-fiction

ever

sees

the

light

of

day.

Most

of

my

non-fiction

is

about

birds.

It’s

not

that

I

think

they’re

a

metaphor

for

freedom

or

hope

or

any

hooey

like

that.

It’s

that

their

existence

never

means

what

you

think

it

means,

and

that

it’s

impossible

to

write

anything

about

them

that

is

both

true

and

all-encompassing.

Perpetually

falling

short

is

what

keeps

me

going.

My

current

works

which

utilize

acrylic

paint

on

canvas

represent

a

free

flowing

expression

of

my

inner

self

in

the

creative

process.

It

is

probably

best

described

as

contemporary

abstract

expressionism.

I

enter

into

my

work

without

preconceived

notions

of

what

I

am

to

accomplish,

but

rather

allow

the

process

to

creatively

translate

my

emotions

and

feelings

into

form.

Sherry Sweet Tewell www.sherrytewell.com

My

abstract

paintings

are

a

discovery

of

layering

color

on

color,

manipulating

the

surface

and

subtracting

to

see

what

is

underneath.

This

season

I

am

also

showing

new

decorative

items

including

pillows,

tiles

and

furniture.
