YOUNG PEOPLE’S

Artsplash is Wellington City Council’s children’s arts festival celebrating dance, music, drama and visual arts for primary and intermediate levels. Every year thousands of young performers and artists from all over the Wellington region come together to perform for 25,000 admiring parents, friends, neighbours, and community members. It’s one of Wellington’s greatest celebrations of talent and youth in our arts calendar.

ARTS FESTIVAL

NGÀ TAURIMA O NGÀ MAHI TOI À NGÀ RANGATAHI O PONEKE

17 October-6 November

Message from the Mayor Let the fun begin! The 18th annual Artsplash Festival takes place from 17 October to 6 November and you’re invited. Children throughout the Wellington Region will act, dance, sing and create their way through a festival that has something for everyone. You don’t have to be a parent or friend to join us; most of the performances are open to the public. So mark your calendar now. You can enjoy dance and vocal performances in the Michael Fowler Centre, drama in the Opera House, or if visual arts is more your thing come on down to the Mezzo Space in the Wellington Central Library, Capital E and the Wellington Convention Centre and check out the art exhibition. Art, expression and creativity are what Artsplash is all about. Enjoy! Mayor Kerry Prendergast, Artsplash Festival Patron

Artsplash Music Concerts

The Opera House Artsplash Drama Festival

At the very heart of Wellington’s Young People’s Arts Festival is music. Whether it is a choir of a thousand, an amazing student orchestral performance, songs from the many New Zealand ethnic cultures, or a musical theatre number, you’ll find it at Artsplash 2005! The Artsplash music concerts provide an opportunity for all primary school students from the Greater Wellington area to come together in our Capital City’s wonderful Michael Fowler Centre to sing in harmony and make music that will excite both performers and audiences. The programme includes a variety of NZ music as well as other world music. The choirs are accompanied by the Wellington Sinfonietta, The Wellington Schools Symphonic Band, The Pelorus Trust Youth Band and by our very own Artsplash 2005 Festival Band. These performances also showcase individual talent from Capital E scholarship students – a programme open to all young people who wish to explore their potential in the music and video scene.

In only its second year as part of the Artsplash Festival, drama is growing in popularity. From one show last year at the St James Theatre, this year the event will move to the Opera House with two performances - one during the day for schools and an evening performance for friends, family and members of the public. The drama component of Artsplash gives children the opportunity to experience a real theatre with sound, lighting, dressing rooms and a live audience. The Opera House Artsplash Drama Festival, Wellington City Council’s successful drama programme, is being staged in the Opera House, Courtenay Place on Tuesday 25 October.

Roger Stevenson, Artsplash Festival Conductor and Musical Director Mary Prichard, Artsplash Festival Administrator and Co-ordinator. Special thanks to Music Works Piano House, Hunter and Victoria Streets, for supply of the Artsplash keyboard, and Te Aro School for assisting with the sign language for the song “Can You Hear Me?”.

Mary Prichard, Drama Co-ordinator.

Artsplash Visual Arts

Artsplash Dance Concerts

As a young visual artist, there’s nothing like seeing your work mounted and displayed alongside other great art. This exhibition encourages the young participants to develop and use their creative gifts.

From an impressive musical programme, dance emerges as an equal creative force for young Artsplash participants. The Festival’s trio of dance concerts includes a combination of expressive forms and dance genres, and enough talent to take the roof off the Convention Centre. The students come from schools throughout the Wellington, Wairarapa and Kapiti regions, and range from Year 1 to Year 8. Their diverse backgrounds and styles are evident in these performances, which cover hip hop, cheer leading, American jazz, contemporary, line and Scottish dance and many other dance influences. Admission to these celebrations is by donation, so reserve a few dollars and treat yourself to the dance explosion at the 2005 Artsplash Festival.

This year we have introduced a Silent Auction so you can bid for your very own piece of art. Details on how to bid will be displayed at each exhibition location. The art will be displayed in three locations in the central city - the Mezzo Space, beside Clark’s Café in the Central Library, in Capital E and in the Michael Fowler Centre. Come along and check out some fantastic artwork.

Ruth Hooke, Artsplash Dance Co-ordinator.

Hundreds take to the stage to deliver a cultural celebration that includes kapa haka, musical theatre, orchestra, choir and dance. These two shows are held during the school day and all schools in the Wellington Region are invited to bring their students to these exciting events. It’s a performing arts showcase of talent and artistic expression unlike any other in New Zealand.
