2011 SEASON INFORMATION 50 Years Under a Tropical Sun

HISTORIC OVERVIEW: The Cairns Festival The Festival Soul: Thoughts on the 50th Season by Producer Eric Holowacz With the opening of a new Green Island jetty on 26 May, 1962, the Far North had something to celebrate—another reason for people to seek out our community, venture to the reef, and play under the tropical sun. As the civic leaders and tourism industry staff planned this new venture fifty years ago, it was clear that a creative celebration was in order. And so began the annual event that would become the Cairns Festival. Established in 1962 as the Cairns Tourist Festival, the gathering was renamed "Fun in the Sun" the following year—and soon began drawing families, creative people, and tourists to celebrate our Far North sense of place. As the decades rolled on, it grew into our community's most significant annual celebration. It became a Festival about who we are, the historic and multicultural connections we have at our roots, and the international mix of people who come to Cairns to learn about life between reef and rainforest. For many who grew up with Fun in the Sun, the Festival was simply about having a good time with friends and neighbours—unbridled, tropical, home-town fun. And as the annual event matured, it gained a following far and wide as Far North Queensland's annual celebration of identity—our culture, a unique tropical lifestyle, lush and rich landscapes, an incredible creative community, and a special fusion of Indigenous, Asian, European, and South Pacific cultures. As the decades wore on, the Festival developed platforms for music, dance, theatre, film, literary arts, and new collaborations. It became a destination—a reason for people in Melbourne or Perth to join us under this warm winter sun. By the early nineties, the event was ready to evolve further. It was renamed the "Reef Festival," and in 2002 was rebranded as "Festival Cairns." Finally, with last year's season, what started as a small town community gathering was renamed Cairns Festival. It was now one of Australia's recognized creative programs, nearly 100 unique events over 17 days, with a vibrant mix of performing, visual, Indigenous, hometown and international artistry.

No matter what you call it, the Festival is about community identity, shared experiences, and creative expression. Over one hundred thousand people experienced last year's program, and they came form all over the world—as well as our own back yard. And they all celebrated in the spirit of our very first season, back in 1962—when the people of Cairns decided that creativity and festival-making was important to the town. Today, the Festival is funded and managed by Cairns Regional Council, with a small seasonal team lead by the amazing Nina Bryony Adwick as administrator. Significant partnerships have been forged with hometown cultural stalwarts like Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, Tanks Arts Centre, JUTE Theatre, Umi Arts, Cairns Regional Gallery—and new inter-state relationships are coming to fruition with La Mama Theatre, Woodford Festival, and other cultural production houses. There are dozens of annual festivals all over Australia, and many of them depend on the same formula: present a range of performers, invite audiences to experience them, sell tickets, and hope there is applause at the end. Cairns Regional Council and our small Festival team are after something more. There's nothing wrong with the tried and true event-based approach, which we too proceed from. But Cairns Festival wants to do better for our creative identity, and we have set out to build a different kind of arts festival. We truly want to give something meaningful back to the community with outreach and cultural connections. It's the Cairns Festival's mission—as the 50th season approaches—to find new ways to engage local creative people, to support and liberate the creative process, and to attempt bold and visionary projects. Based in a small headquarters in City Place, the team is now working hard to develop projects and ideas that go beneath the surface and reveal rich and inspiring stories. Projects continuing from last year—like Posters to the People, Far North Art-o-mat and Opening Notes—are the start of a new form of Festival that does more than charge you for a ticket and hope you will find the experience worthwhile. For the 2011 season, the bold initiatives continue: a diverse free music series at the main stage in Fogarty Park, six free film evenings on the Esplanade, the Man vs Fascinator socio-photographic exhibition, Opening Notes package for every newborn, Gremlin street theatre, and an extraordinary new Muddy's Art Village for parents and children. If we do it right, Cairns Festival will provide a bit of innovation to the standard event-based model. Cairns Regional Council has asked us to surprise and delight, and keep the spirit of Fun in the Sun alive. If we get it really right, our Festival will give added meaning to people's lives and a sense of wonder to what goes on around us, and that should carry us for another 50 years. As preparations for its milestone season are being made, Cairns Festival is gathering thousands of creative people—from the parade participants and locally produced events to the international musicians and visiting artists in residence. Without them, there would be no events, no program, no creative spark for our community's main cultural celebration. Each and every person involved in the past fifty years has given something special to our stages, streets, and lives. They have contributed their human spirit and an unlimited sense of creativity to ensure that our annual rituals are bold, meaningful, and relevant. They have proved that we are not Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane—and that this fact is a very good, very Far North thing. Their ongoing presence—in the shade of a towering fig tree, along the expanse of the Esplanade, and under a tropical sun—is what has given the Cairns Festival its soul. And that too is what sets our community's gathering apart form all the other festivals around the globe.

Far North Mobile Ukulele Unit A music-making partnership with Cairns Ukulele Festival As part of its milestone 50th season, Cairns Festival has acquired 100 ukuleles and has announced the establishment of the Far North Mobile Ukulele Unit. The instruments will be made available to schools, community groups, and other festivals throughout the Cairns Region, as a way to share the joy of music and the creative spark with people throughout the Far North. The idea began with a conversation between Cairns Festival producer, Eric Holowacz, and Ukulele Festival founder, Gaby Thomasz. The two were brainstorming about how to extend music-making across the region, and came up with the notion of a mobile unit, ready to dispatch with everything needed to make music: ukuleles, an instructor, and an assortment of great songs. Other great ideas soon followed, like a marching ukulele brigade for parades, a spontaneous 100-member ukulele flash mob, and even a mass ukulele welcome for visitors and dignitaries arriving at the Cairns Airport or cruise ship terminal. The Far North Mobile Ukulele Unit made its debut at the 2011 Cairns Ukulele Festival, where it helped the community nearly break the Guinness World Record for largest ukulele ensemble. The Festival’s new Ukulele Unit is now available for community projects, libraries, schools, Indigenous groups, to request a music workshop over the coming year. Look for ukes, musical marching brigades, and spontaneous music-making throughout our 50th Festival season—and join in the four-string revolution!

Cairns Festival Underwater Worlds Made Possible by Mike Ball Dive Expeditions Fogarty Park Festival Stage (before and after the Free Film Series) Imagine an amazing world of underwater creatures, corals, manta rays, whales and giant cod. Imagine pristine waters glistening in the tropical sun, and the wonders of a dive below. For many people in Cairns, these images are a reality that awaits just offshore and all along the Great Barrier Reef. Let’s have a look. Following each of our free feature films, we’ll look at the modern marine environment. Thanks to Mike Ball Dive Expeditions, the 2011 Cairns Festival will present a look at some otherworldly marine videography as part of our Underwater Worlds series: short, silent film loops to screen immediately after the feature movies in our free film series. Linger in Fogarty Park, immerse yourself in another unique aspect of life in the Far North, and dive into underwater worlds when they hit the Festival’s big screen.

Far North Gremlin Holiday Made possible by the Woodfordian Institute of Street Performance, Cairns Regional Council Creative Partnerships, Kylie Burke, and local performers Cairns Festival is planning a peaceful invasion of curious characters originating in the South. Woodford Folk Festival, that legendary creative force in Australian culture, begins a new partnership with the Far North when its resident street theatre population, the Gremlins, washes ashore during the 2011 Festival season. While here, Woodfordia's Gremlins will explore our shops and neighbourhoods, intrigue pedestrians, learn more about the laws of gravity, and become part of the fabric of our North Queensland community. Their community will establish a camp on The Esplanade, constructed with help from local artist Kylie Burke. A Gremlin Rokit Workshop will appear at the Festival’s Muddy’s Art Village, offering kids the opportunity to help construct space-going machinery. And thanks to local artist Hayley Gillespie, young and old folks will be able to read about the Gremlin history, culture, and odyssey to the Far North in the Gremlin Storybook Walk—a series of illustrated signs that recount their journey from Woodford to Cairns. Then, after a 17-day tropical holiday, the Gremlin population will attempt to blast off into the sky as the 2011 Cairns Festival season comes to a close. A main presence at the 2010/11 Woodford Festival, the Gremlin characters and culture were developed last year by the aptly-named Woodfordian Institute of Street Performance, under the guidance of producers Alex Podger and Jenna Koda, and legendary theatre figure Hayden Spencer. Their team will come to Cairns in early August to begin acting, clowning, and street performance workshops for local performers—and help train a local population of Gremlins for Cairns Festival. Far North theatre worker Sarah Boulle is serving as Chief Gremlin Wrangler for our local population of street theatre participants. It’s innovative and curious street theatre, new cross-Queensland collaboration, and creativity run amuck! It’s the Gremlins Far North Holiday!

Posters to the People Made Possible by James Cook University, BDO, and Auxiliary Design Posters to the People started with the 2010 Cairns Festival, when we invited four great artists in our region to supply an image that speaks to their own visual language and graphical identity. This quartet was intentionally diverse in style, influence, and approach: Dominic Johns, Arone Meeks, Caroline Mudge, and Sam Tupou. Cairns Festival, with the help of Joel Goodman at Auxiliary Central, then produced a limited edition of 500 posters of each artist's work—as a way to honor and acknowledge these talents and unique visual communicators resident in our own backyard. When the new Festival Headquarters opened in City Place, we piled the posters in the foyer and invited the community to come in, have a look, and go home with whichever images they want. It was an instant art collection, free of charge, and the Festival's new gift to those who support and advance culture makers in the Cairns Region. This year, our Posters to the People project expands to 8 local artists, and more free and eye-catching images for Far North art lovers to obtain and enjoy ever after. Thanks to all the artists, James Cook University, BDO, and Joel Goodman of Auxiliary for helping us give posters to the people!

Opening Notes Made possible by Cairns Penny Savings, Cairns Base and Cairns Private Hospitals, Roz Pappalardo, Ray Clark/Still-Life Design, and Nigel Pegrum/Pegasus Studio. Cairns Regional Council is pleased to announce the second year of the Cairns Festival's Opening Notes project, which will be launched on Friday, 19 August, to coincide with the start of 50th Cairns Festival season. Opening Notes was begun in 2010 as a goodwill effort and creative welcome, involving the production and gifting of a cultural identity package to every baby born in the Far North—on their day of birth and at their place of delivery. The Opening Notes package takes the form of a carefully compiled CD of home-grown music from Far North Queensland and a booklet of images revealing the region's sense of place: Thanks to the Festival’s partnerships and everybody involved, the Opening Notes package is presented to every baby born from Cape York to Tully upon arrival at their place of birth. It's a welcome gesture from Cairns Regional Council and everybody involved. The 2011 Opening Notes project—coordinated by Roz Pappalardo of the Council's Creative Partnerships Team—will include new music from The Medics, Gondwana Indigenous Children's Choir, Sian Evans, Jun Jun Jarra, Ray-Lee Russell, The McMenamins and nearly twenty other Far North musicians. The first 2011/2012 Opening Notes package will be gifted to the first baby born during the 50th Festival season: a purely home-made statement of the culture around us and an indication of the creative legacy inherited by every newborn baby in our region. More than 4000 children are born annually in Far North Queensland, with over half arriving at Cairns Base hospital. Thanks to essential partnerships with Queensland Health and Cairns Private Hospital leaders, and their birthing staff and maternity services teams, Opening Notes is our community’s unique welcome for every delivery in Cairns and the greater region.

Far North Art-o-mat Machine Coin-operating art collecting comes to the Southern Hemisphere Twelve year’s ago, North Carolina artist Clark Whittington found a rusty old cigarette vending machine in a shed. He gradually restored it, redesigned the facade, and asked his artist friends if they would want to make small original art objects to sell out of the machine. Everyone said yes, and the Art-o-mat was born. Now Whittington manages a network of almost 100 repurposed art vending machines from Vienna to Los Angeles—and he has over 300 contributing artists stocking the machines from all over the world. Thanks to Cairns Festival, North Queensland become home to the first Art-o-mat in the SouthernArthouse Roadshow Hemisphere. It arrived in time for our 2010 season, and was recently relaunched as a new fixture in the KickArts gift shop There people from throughout Australia can visit the Aussie Art-o-mat, hand over a $5 note, get a token, and pull one of twenty knobs on the singular art-dispensing machine—the first one in the Southern Hemisphere. After a brief pause, and then a kerplunk, an original handmade work of art or neatly packaged craft object will appear in the Art-o-mat's bottom tray. There's no easier way to collect original art from around the world, and this year a handful of Cairns-based artists are getting involved. Be sure to bring a few gold coins on your next visit to KickArts Contemproary Arts, and walk away with an Art-o-mat treasure.

Cairns Birding Walks The Enchantment of birdsongs and our tropical widllife This popular guided walk is all about the birds, and will again provide ample opportunities to explore local fauna during Cairns Festival. August-September is an exciting time for Far North bird watchers. This is when migrants begin coming back from the north. Some, such as shorebirds after breeding in the northern hemisphere, and some, such as the Pied Pigeon, the

Metallic Starling and other songbird migrants, to nest in Australia after spending the winter in New Guinea. The new action usually starts with the shorebirds' arrival, sometimes en masse, near the end of the second week of August. The arrival of the Pied Fruit Pigeon, usually in the last week of August or the first week of September, is keenly anticipated by local bird lovers. Join them under a tropical sun, and explore the wonderful range of birdlife in our parks, gardens, and own backyard. Check the Cairns Festival website for a complete listing of times, locations, and bird watching activities offered during the 50th season.

Orange Bean Bag Invasion Unmistakable, comfortable, ubiquitous, orange! Look there on the horizon at the Tanks, in Fogarty Park, by the Gremlin Camp at The Esplande, next to the Festival’s Muddy’s Art Village: two dozen bright orange bean bags dotting the landscape! People are sitting on them. Some are staring at them. Kids throw them. The Orange Bean Bag Invasion is a social networking project for the real space, developed by artist and creative person Selina Kudo. This moveable installation involves setting up bean bags with coffee tables, lamps and other accessories at various locations during Cairns Festival. The idea is to alter the outdoor space in a fun and useful way, get people to relax, and see if they can become one with comfortable orange things! Let the invasion begin!

Festival Badge Partners Pick up your free Festival badge, wear it always, and enjoy some fantastic deals and discounts in town! Support wonderful local businesses during Festival Time! Last year, Cairns Festival found an innovative way to connect our community and audiences to local businesses. We created 1,000 Festival badges, the kind you pin on your shirt or handbag, and gave them away to our supporters and audiences. We worked with over two dozen restaurants, shops, and tour companies to offer something special to anyone wearing the colourful badge during the season. And for the 50th Festival, we’re doing it again! Pick up your official badge at the Festival Headquarters in City Place, the lobby of the Civic Theatre, Cairns Regional Council reception in Spence Street, or the KickArts Gift Shop. Wear it and support our local shops, restaurants, and businesses as you plan your Cairns Festival experiences. Once the 1,000 official badges are all taken, they are gone. So secure your badge today and affix it to your person ever after!

Cairns Historical Society Nostalgiafone The Past is Calling you at City Place Cairns Museum, in partnership with artist Annaliese Ciel Walker, present Nostalgiafone—the atmospherically historical telephone of Cairns recollections. This audio installation within a vintage red payphone will be positioned in City Place, in front of the Cairns Festival HQ and will encourage interaction by the curious. Passers-by are invited to pick up the telephone handset and listen to the stories and reminiscences of life in post-war Cairns. Recorded oral histories have been pieced together from interviews to create an evocative aural experience that explores these forgotten and transformative years in Cairns and Far North history. Look for Nostalgiaphone in Lake Street by the City Place band stage. Pick it up and see who’s calling!

SlowDive Attic Choreographed by Claire Marshall in collaboration with Seven Dancers 9:00pm 18, 19, 20 August The Attic / $15 Brisbane choreographer and leading creative force, Claire Marshall, comes to Cairns as the Festival’s first choreographer-in-residence. Here she’ll set her latest work inside a popular nightclub and blur the lines between dance event and club-going. SlowDive is a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly side of club culture, human behaviour and the shenanigans that occur in a night club environment. Set in the early 1990's in an underground scene reminiscent of Indie clubs of bygone days, SlowDive shifts between the strangely compelling and the somewhat disturbing as it explores the agendas of the DJ, bar staff, club owner, and punters. Marshall, stemming form her years as a DJ, was inspired by the self-destruction witnessed on the dance floor. But SlowDive Attic is not all just decadence, decay and debauchery. It’s an immersive, engaging experience of new choreography! Patrons of The Attic will have a few not-so-late night opportunities to watch her dance theatre work unfold, as seven contemporary dancers turn the entire Attic into a performance space. Audiences, the lucky ones who attend this purpose-built Cairns Festival production, will become part of the narrative, the dance space, the environment. Claire Marshall’s Festival residency and the development of Slowdive Attic have been made possible through a generous partnership with Gilligan's Backpacker Hotel and the ongoing support of the Cairns Centre of Contemporary Arts.

AUGUST 19 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair Symposium Centre of Contemporary Arts 8:30am to 5:00pm / $25-50

16

Two contemporary issues lead the CIAF2011 Symposium: what it means to create new art as an Indigenous artist in Queensland and the ethical curatorship of contemporary indigenous art. This all-day event offers a unique opportunity for Cairns residents and visitors to discuss these two key issues related to Indigenous art with leading authorities and keynote speakers: Vernon Ah Khee, one of Australia's representatives at the 2009 Venice Biennale and finalist in the 2010 Basil Sellers Art prize, speaks about his current work in an international context. Dr Peter Sutton, anthropologist, author and winner of the 2011 John Button Prize for political writing, presents new research on the contemporary era in the history of the Wik speaking peoples of Western Cape York, using the journals and pictorial essay of Ursula McConnell (1889-1957) Dr Maura Reilly, the founding curator of the Elizabeth A Sackler Centre for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum, USA and recent appointee to Professor of Art Theory at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, presents dialogues in contemporary art and ethical curatorship. Dr Sachiko Kubota, professor in Cultural Anthropology, Graduate School of Intercultural Studies, Kobe University, Japan. Bruce McLean, Associate Curator Indigenous Australian Art, Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane.

Two Sides of the Same Story Site-based theatre by Cairns High School Students Esplanade Lagoon / Late Afternoon As Cairns Festival began its partnership with La Mama Theatre, a few unexpected ideas emerged. After a developmental workshop for La Mama’s Schism earlier this year, Cairns High School students were inspired to address climate change in their own way. What they developed is a work of site-based interventionist theatre for the opening of the Festival. If environmental issues, the next generation and equality amongst society interest you, come down to the Esplanade to see Two Sides of the Same Story. Developed by Cairns State High School‘s Year 11 and 12 International Baccalaureate Theatre Class the work is based around the issues important to the students involved. It is a tale of two extremists who take their say on the global-warming debate into the public realm, and then too far. Blending perfectly into the Esplanade and Lagoon area, a story unfolds that shows how each side’s followers realise that they need to act now—before it’s too late. In essence, this new theatre work by Cairns young people is a message for you.

Festival Opening Concert Cairns Gondwana Indigenous Children’s Choir, Seaman Dan, Will Kepa and Friends Fogarty Park Festival Stage / 7:00pm / Free Our 50th season is something special, and we wanted to open the Festival in a special way. So we asked Lyn Williams, founder of Gondwana Indigenous Children’s Choir to create a program with her young, talented singers. Then we asked Seaman Dan to join them and celebrate the songs, music, and ethos of the Far North together. And finally, we invited local music leader Will Kepa to gather his most exciting fellow musicians for an evening like no other. They’ll be joined by Troy and Trevelyn, Ben Hakalitz and Tribe of Jubal unplugged, for a Cairns Festival opening music event and Golden Jubilee concert.

Festival CIAF Closing Concert The Medics Far North Homecoming Fogarty Park Festival Stage / 7:00pm / Free There’s no denying it: The Medics are making it, making it big. Born of the Far North and now based in Brisbane, The Medics are bound for greatness. Their music-making just keeps getting better, and every live show is proving them champions of the Australian contemporary music scene. On the eve of their debut album, the Festival decided to invite The Medics home, back to Cairns, back to where it all started—to help us close out the 2011 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair weekend. While originally a five piece, the core of the band has always been cousins Kahl Wallace and Jhindu Lawrie, alongside friends Andrew Thomson and Charles Thomas. After making an impression on the hometown scene, the band soon found themselves playing any show they could find: house parties, small local venues, and even the occasional trip to other regional cities like Townsville. And wherever they unleash their sound, they have always been something to behold. From the epic layers of atmospheric guitars, to the rumbling bottom end each track is its own little world. But always front and centre of it all there’s ‘that’ voice. Fragile one minute, on the edge the next.

22

An exhilarating blur of passion and movement, the band bring an all-too-rare sense of urgency to their songs that underpins Kahl’s emotive delivery. It’s an intoxicating spectacle and has seen them quickly become one of the country’s most talked-about new outfits. All doubts were removed at the 2010 Deadly Awards when they collected the Band of the Year honour. The Medics’ new record is due out any day—in perfect sync with this special Cairns Festival appearance following the Overflow FNQ Grand parade and fireworks. Among their new arsenal of songs is one they have titled “50 Years.” It’s a special tribute to a hometown, a tropical existence, a recollection of a past set right here in Far North Queensland. “What will become of us in fifty years,” they sing. And all of the Cairns Festival will sing it with them.

AUGUST 22 Dancenorth Double Bill: Black Crows & (sic) Centre of Contemporary Arts 22, 23 August / 7:30pm / $25/20 Golden Ticket Event Black Crows, a new work by choreographer and artistic director Raewyn Hill, explores the sense of community created out of sharing a profound experience. Specifically, the work takes its theme from the impact of war on couples and the community that develops between soldiers in battle (and still connected to the loved ones left at home). Using a unique dance language, Hill uses movement based on ideas of protecting and building community. Set on top of a pile of old newspapers, which (along with radio) was once our only form of media communication, Black Crows is presented within an aesthetic uniformity that also represents the rigid formality of military life. Set to a new score by Spanish composer Micka Luna, this work was developed by the company whilst in resident at the Baryshnikov Arts Centre in New York, in September 2010 and premiered in Townsville this past March. [SIC] is a new work by Ross McCormack and Elie Tass, who currently perform for Belgium’s famed les ballets C de la B. It was developed in partnership with Dancenorth in early 2011, as part of a choreographic residency in Townsville. The short dance work, half of this unique double bill for Cairns Festival, has been described as "a flirtation and reinvention of our inner urges, urges otherwise denied or adapted in their natural course of goal and purpose. A naked exaggerated wallow in glorious impulses suddenly discharged from their usual desires of aim, achievement and accomplishment."

An Evening with Jim Woodring Tanks Arts Centre Doors open at 6:30pm / Free He’s back, and just in time for the Festival! Jim Woodring, one of the sharpest intellects to ever make a comic book, comes to the Tanks straight from an international Sydney cartoon festival. Like a cross between Dr. Seuss and Hieronymus Bosch, Woodring’s drawings and prints have cult status amongst cartoon aficionados world-wide. If you caught his remarkable exhibition and artist’s talk at Tanks in 2007, you’ll remember an evening of mind boggling ideas, presented against mesmerizing images from his crazed imagination—bizarre man-hog characters, scary and seductive transforming pattern-beasts, and the lovable protagonist, Frank. For Cairns Festival, Woodring returns to administer another dose of his delightfully complex mind with a presentation of slides as part of the Earthed program in partnership with James Cook University.

Theatre of Environment Double Bill La Mama Theatre presents Schism by Melanie Bainbridge & The Salvage Company presents Whales & Souls by Andrew Kramer New stage works with an earthly concern Centre of Contemporary Arts The Space 26, 27, and 28 August / 7:00pm / one hour interval / $20/15 Golden Ticket Event As part of an ongoing investigation into new theatre works, Cairns Festival is proud to present a double bill of short new plays that specifically address environmental change and concerns. As part of our new performance series at the Centre of Contemporary Arts, we're presenting this double bill of short works, Theatre of the Environment. La Mama presents Schism, a new stage work written by Melanie Bainbridge, with dramaturgy and performance by Pippa Bainbridge. Schism is a theatre piece for solo performer, initially written for and presented as part of La Mama’s Explorations Season in 2010. It is a premonitory work, illuminating the broad impacts of environmental crises, through the eyes of a pair of ‘disconnected’ twins. A collaborative work created by two sisters, writer Melanie Bainbridge, and theatre-maker/performer Pippa Bainbridge, Schism is a psychological thriller documenting the binary opposition that dwells within our individual and collective conscience, an exploration of the psychological impact that a damaged environment can have on its people and the degree of disconnection and perverse reaction this can inspire. In a world inexorably altered by compulsive consumption and disconnection from the environment, Schism explores personal and cultural psychological vulnerability as a response to a culture of ignorance and misinformation.

SEPTEMBER 2 The 2 Dimensional Life of Her by Fleur Elise Noble Captivatingly surreal multi-media puppet theatre Centre of Contemporary Arts The Space 2, 3 and 4 September Curtain at 4 and 6pm / $20/15 Golden Ticket Event 2 Dimensional Life of Her is a visual performance made of drawing, animation, puppetry, projection and paper. Unlike anything you will see at Cairns Festival, Fleur Elise Noble creates a richly imagined parallel world, in which everything thought to be still or flat becomes some_thing else. Noble’s drawings begin to reproduce themselves, drifting between surfaces and moving in and out of three dimensions, as the act of creation separates itself from the artist responsible for its beginnings. In this illusionary, captivating and cheeky work for the CoCA Space, visual tensions build and realities pile up until the artist loses control of her creations and absolutely anything becomes possible. Standing at the centre of this mesmerising work of light and shadows, your sense of reality will be teased and blurred. “Noble not only deconstructs her art, she shreds, incinerates and rebuilds it, milking the full potential of today’s technology like an Andy Warhol for a new era.” - Patrick McDonald, The Adelaide Advertiser (2009)

Festival Icons of the Far North Concert Carinda Christie, Snake Gully, and Johno’s Blues Band Fogarty Park Festival Stage 6:00pm / Free What better way to revel in the tropical life we share in Cairns than through music made by a few of our very own legends. The Festival’s Icons of the Far North concert starts with Carinda Christie, a singular voice in Far North music. In 2000, after years of playing with bands she decided to pick up her well-loved acoustic guitar and travel solo. Her passionate voice is joined by robust acoustic guitar, Dobro Slide guitar and stomp box—and her songs are peppered with entertaining anecdotes about life and music. Folk legends Snake Gully take the stage for a homecoming of their own. One of far north Queensland’s most enduring and endearing bands is celebrating its 25th anniversary with Cairns Festival. Snake Gully has assembled members past and present, including founder member Alan “Piggy” Jones, and resurrected the sketches and songs that first helped establish its reputation as a local crowd favourite back in the ‘80s, when it was known as Snake Gully Ensemble. This iconic evening concludes with the legendary Johno’s Blues Band, one of the most historic and colourful aspects of the local music scene for almost three decades. In the late 80s, the band took off for England and Europe, at the urging of the first swarm of backpackers who had found Cairns and the strip known as the Barbary Coast. Abroad, Johno’s Blues Band played numerous gigs in England, Holland and Germany, and created mayhem in Scotland, France, and Belgium. On the band's return to Australia, they secured a recording contract, relocated to Sydney, and toured the southern capitals making a name for themselves. 1989 saw the band return to Cairns in search of the good life on their beloved Barbary Coast, only to find the bulldozers and developers had beaten them to it. To Johno's Blues Band, the solution was obvious: start their own strictly live music bar, and recapture the fun and magic of the "Barbary"! They did just that, and for nearly the next 20 years, Johno’s Band, and Bar, played host to music every single night, featuring themselves, and the best acts from USA, England and interstate. Don’t miss this powerful trifecta of Far North musicianship when the Festival celebrates true Icons of the Far North. Because nothing celebrates the tropical life like music made right here in our own back yard!

LA Vampires (USA) is the shape-shifting sound-system universe of Amanda Beth Brown (co-director of Not Not Fun Records), and her co-collaborators. Their sound is an evolving vibe, utilizing a web of slowed/screwed tapes, boombox Casio FX, low end theories, and bleached voice patterns to conjure a reverb-chamber worth of dance floor mirages. DJ Manchild has been playing dancefloors of Melbourne and beyond since early 2001, supporting everyone from De La Soul to Norman Jay. He also produces the seminal radio show The Breakdown, on Melbourne's 3PBS FM. This unique Festival Mixed Grill includes ample support from Melbourne’s Sexyparty, We Could Be Heroes, performance artists Clarinet Bayonet, Hanzard, Font, Zane Saunders and File_Error, graf artist Wally Wallwork and The Next Page crew, plus local DJ's Jack The Ripper and No Request. Public Opinion Afro Orchestra Fogarty Park Festival Stage 7:00pm / Free For our final Saturday night, the Festival has a special gig in store. Inspired by the infectious afro-beat music of Nigeria and its neighbours, the Public Opinion Afro Orchestra unleashes contemporary African funk for Australian dancefloors and festivals—often blowing the roof off the joint. This mammoth ensemble comprises seventeen musicians hand-picked from Melbourne’s music scene, and is a spectacle of glorious music-making. The sound of the entire band is a force to be reckoned with. The Public Opinion’s powerful MCs and tribal rhythms are the modern-day “musical weapon” that Fela Kuti conceived of. Their conscious lyrics and West African grooves are relevant today, while remaining faithful to the message of afro-beat. They opened the Melbourne International Arts Festival in 2008, thrilled WOMADelaide in 2010, and exploded onto the scene at this year’s Perth International Arts Festival. Now it’s Far North Queensland’s turn to get turned on by the Public Opinion Afro Orchestra.

Jazz Under the Stars Cairns Botanic Gardens 6:30pm to 9:30pm $10 at the door A Festival tradition: great jazz performed by the Far North’s best local musicians, in a setting so lush and tropical. It’s Jazz Under the Stars! The program starts with Cool Change, a group of Cairns-based musicians who have been performing together as a four piece, three piece or duo for the past ten years. They play a wide variety of styles from smooth latin bossa novas, jazz, to soul and funk . Next up in the Gardens are The After Hours Big Band, styled after the large jazz ensembles that dominated American popular music in the period 1930s and 40s. Cosmopolitan singer and consummate performer Nikki Doll follows, and her music proclaims the spirit of Gospel, Soul, Rhythm ‘n’ Blues, with an eclectic selection of Afro Jazz Roots, Funk & World Groove Fusions. And finally, a Far North jazz legend, Junior SeePoy, takes the stage under starry skies. SeePoy has been playing Jazz in Queensland for many years. An expert exponent of the Alto and Tenor Saxophones, he is well known for his professional approach to BeBop. With his sons Tom on Keyboard, and Johnny on Drums, Junior will supplement his family group with expert musicians to thrill Jazz lovers at this closing weekend feature of the 50th Cairns Festival season.

Festival Finale and Fireworks with Tijuana Cartel Fogarty Park Festival Stage 7:00pm / Fireworks at 8:45pm / Free You’d have to look long and hard to find a hotter band than Tijuana Cartel. So before our Finale Fireworks light up the sky on Sunday night, we thought we’d invite them to take the Festival Stage for one last Fogarty Park event. They hail from the Gold Coast, but Tijuana Cartel have built a firm reputation for beats that span the globe. Multi-layered grooves, touches of slide and flamenco guitar, trumpet, vocals and Afro-Cuban Percussion mixed with some hardened electronica – it’s a combo that the Cairns Festival audience will find intriguing, energetic and utterly delicious! What makes Tijuana Cartel so unique—besides an unmatched raw energy—is their ability to beautifully combine diverse musical elements into one track. “We have different backgrounds that are reflected in our music” explains Daniel Gonzalez the band’s Percussionist. Their travels have had a tremendous impact on their music-making, beginning with a tour of India, and a considerable amount of time in the clubbing scene in the UK. Despite the shades of world music, Tijuana Cartel fit even more comfortably within the Indy/Electronica scene. Following in the wake of bands like Vampire Weekend, the Cartel continue to find new ways to filter world music through indie rock and roll., The result, as Festival-goers will find out before the real fireworks hit the skies, is a new era of globalising western music.

2011 Festival Exhibitions

What’s on View during the 50th Season Cairns Festival Man vs Fascinator Portraits of Men in Headgear by Jake Nowakowski

Circa 1907 Gallery / 23 August to 3 September A new collaborative socio-photographic project will debut at Circa 1907 Gallery in City Place for this year's Festival. Photographer Jake Nowakowski and the Cairns Festival team have been setting up mobile portrait studios and shooting the first Man vs Fascinator images for exhibition later in the year. The Festival realizes that the Fascinator, a type of fanciful headdress worn at social functions throughout Australia, is an important aspect of the Queensland woman's wardrobe (especially when equestrian activities or nuptials are happening nearby). This small, often feathered object is a staple of race-going and party-making, and it appears at key events during the year. The Man vs Fascinator project started by asking local women to dig deep into their wardrobe and select one or two of their favourite Fascinators. Then, in a bold attempt at male-female social experimentation, we asked them to present it to their partner and convince him to try it on. If everybody seemed comfortable, the logical next step was for man to meet project artist Jake Nowakowski—a celebrated Australian photo-journalist—and be immortalized in a portrait. Cairns Festival is proud to present Man vs Fascinator, and two dozen bold men in familiar-but-unusual head-dress, during the 2011 season.

(Un) Seen Sculptures North Throughout Festival After invading hipster enclaves in Sydney, taking over large swathes of inner city Melbourne, and spreading colonies of psychedelic virtual toads throughout Victoria and New South Wales, (Un)seen Sculptures is heading north for the 2011 Cairns Festival. The 21st century digital project, curated by Warren Armstrong, is based on an exhibition of mobile 3D augmented reality art situated in locations along the Esplanade and Cairns CBD. These will be virtual digital works – hidden from the naked eye but visible to anyone with an iPhone, Android or the latest Nokia smartphone (and a free app called the Layar Reality Browser). Once they have downloaded to their device, Festival-goers can simply open it up, search for “unseen sculptures”, then hold up their phones at the designated locations. There they will see the artworks, as if they were actually positioned in place. When these sculptures are “touched”, further information about them will be revealed — and other forms of interaction may be unlocked. The show will feature unseen sculptures by local artists, and creative people from around Australia and overseas. The pieces will traverse a wide range of styles and subjects, and viewers will even have a chance to contribute via a work called The Information Virus (Tempus Apparatus Strain), which will play recordings of their personal stories of Cairns from the past, present, (and maybe even) future. Grab your handheld device and confront the future with this unique augmented reality sculpture environment positioned all around the Cairns CBD.

Warren Armstrong, curator of (Un)seen Sculptures, is a new media artist whose practice explores web-based art, sonification and augmented reality. His most recent works include The Information Virus (2010), a 3D augmented reality work that was featured in the Bushwick Augmented Reality Intervention 2010 in Brooklyn, New York; and the Twitterphonicon/Twitter Hymn Book (2010), an installation that converts Twitter updates into music, which he collaborated on with Sydney composer, Amanda Cole. This latter work was exhibited as part of the New Interfaces in Musical Expression conference in Sydney, and was a finalist in the 2010 Blake Prize for Religious Art.

Cairns Festival Ten Minute Landscapes Video Projections in the CBD / Created by Crystal Bustos In partnership with Final Touch Productions The premise is very simple for this urban enhancement project: shoot a series of ten minute high-definition videos, featuring landscapes around Far North Queensland. Project them as a loop in windows and shop fronts, or places where casual observers might stop and ponder the images. Local photographer Crystal Bustos has done just that: captured a handful of Far North scenes in high-definition video. As part of our 50th season, we will present these (and other new video works) to encourage a kind of urban meditation during Cairns Festival—and connect us all a little bit more to the extraordinary beauty of the world around us. Look for Ten Minute Landscapes as you roam City Place and the CBD by night—another creative Festival element.

Hayley Gillespie: The Gremlin Storybook Walk Esplanade, between Muddy’s Playground and Lagoon Cairns Festival has commissioned local artist Hayley Gillespie to depict the unique narrative of our Gremlin visitors, from their time at this past Woodford Festival, to the long ocean journey, and ultimate arrival in the Far North time for Cairns Festival. Storybook panels will be installed as child-friendly signs, allowing viewers to walk from Muddy’s Playground to the Gremlin camp near the lagoon — all the while reading the unusual history of our Gremlin guests, and learning about their fascinating culture through Gillespie’s most beautiful depictions.

Steve Keene: 1000 Far North Pictures Tanks Arts Centre, and other locations One of the most prolific painters in America, Steve Keene produces hundreds of pictures each week, using a rapid-fire one-man assembly line that absorbs various elements of his surrounding, media coverage, and elements of beauty — resulting in a body of work that is unique to the place he is in. As Cairns Festival artist-in-residence, Keene will set up a fast and furious studio at Tanks Arts Centre, and begin absorbing and painting his surroundings. Visitors will be able to have a look at his progress, scan hundreds of new Far North Pictures, and walk away with new original works of art, each for a simple gold coin donation.
