HOLT INTERNATIONAL
2014 ANNUAL REPORT
OUR VISION A WORLD WHERE EVERY CHILD HAS A HOME Child welfare and global development experts estimate that there are 153 million orphans in the world today, a staggering and heartbreaking number, but one that Holt International, with God’s provision, is determined to combat. For nearly 60 years, Holt International has been at the forefront, finding and supporting loving homes for orphaned and homeless children and continually expanding our services to meet the needs of the world’s most vulnerable children. We are making a difference, one child at a time. We achieve our goals through three equally important pillars of service, each helping us to realize our vision: a world where every child has a loving and secure home. First, we work to strengthen vulnerable families so their beloved children can remain where they belong — with their families, in their homes. For children who are orphaned or abandoned, we provide the best possible orphan care, allowing children to grow strong and healthy in a safe, nurturing environment until we can find a permanent solution. And for children who truly cannot be reunited with their birth families, we seek out the right, loving family through domestic or international adoption. However a child comes into Holt’s care, our goal, while utilizing our crucial pillars of service, is to do what’s best for every child, meeting their individual needs and securing for them a bright and hopeful future. While our annual report is about more than just statistics, these numbers reflect our steadfast efforts to reduce the number of orphaned and homeless children. This is our hope, and with our heavenly Father’s guidance and friends like you on our side, we know that we will continue to make a difference. Together, we will strengthen families, provide exceptional care for vulnerable children and, most importantly, ensure that every child is blessed with a loving and secure family. Blessings,

Some children enter our care temporarily and are ultimately able to reunite with their families. For other children, their only chance at a family is through in-country or international adoption. While children wait to rejoin their birth families or for us to find them the right adoptive family, we provide the highest level of care.
Adoption is a life-long commitment, and we are dedicated to serving adoptees and their families for their entire lives. We put the needs of the adoptee first, and whenever possible, we find a family in the child’s country of birth. If that isn’t possible, we search for a loving, equipped family in the United States.
STRENGTHENING No parent should ever have to make the heart-wrenching decision to abandon a child they can’t support. Through our family strengthening programs, they don’t have to. Our programs help families grow to a place of self-reliance and lasting stability — keeping children out of institutions and addressing the root causes of abandonment.

PILLAR ONE:
FAMILY STRENGTHENING Empowering Single Mothers At the Nazareth Home for Single Mothers, Maria received pre- and post-natal care, counseling, and vocational and parenting skills to help her raise her son. “The Nazareth Home made me realize that being pregnant is not the end of a happy and peaceful life, it’s just the start.” — Maria, Manila, Philippines
KEEPING CHILDREN IN SCHOOL In 2007, Li Gen Hao became one of the first Holt-sponsored students in Longchuan, China — easing the burden on her family, and enabling her to stay in school. Today, Gen Hao attends college with the support of Holt’s continuing education program. “Now I realize it’s the power of love. My whole life will carry on the love and hope of yours.” — Li Gen Hao, Longchuan, China

Daycare and preschool In 2014, Holt’s legacy partner Vathsalya Charitable Trust (VCT) established an innovative daycare program for children of migrant construction workers in Bangalore, India. With Holt’s support, the children receive nourishing meals, attend preschool or age-appropriate classes, and are lavished with attention and love. Before VCT opened its doors to them, the children most often stayed alone on the construction sites while their parents worked.
How Sponsors Strengthen Families Most of the children in Holt’s sponsorship program live with their families, but are at risk of separating from them due to poverty, illness or other hardships. Through their monthly $30 commitment, sponsors provide the tools and resources families need to grow strong, stable and self-reliant. Ultimately, sponsors ensure parents can independently care for their children — and ensure children can grow and thrive in the loving care of their families.

PILLAR TWO:
ORPHAN CARE
medical needs Xiu Xiu came into orphanage care as a newborn, suffering serious developmental delays. In September 2014, she entered Holt’s Peace House in Beijing, China. A special foster home, the Peace House provides nurturing before-and-after care for orphaned and abandoned children in need of life-changing medical treatment. After entering care, Xiu Xiu cried continually, and her muscles were weak. She began physical therapy, and after just three sessions, Xiu Xiu learned how to reach for toys, hold a walker and clap. When her adoptive family came to bring her home, Xiu Xiu was eating well, engaged with other children, and standing on her own! Today, Xiu Xiu is thriving in a loving adoptive family!

Nutrition Our Orphan Nutrition Program: Three years ago, Holt teamed up with SPOON Foundation, a nonprofit focused on improving nutrition and feeding for orphaned, fostered and adopted children. After identifying India as a pilot site, SPOON implemented a nutrition screening system and trained caregivers to properly track the growth and nutrition of children in care. Since implementing the Orphan Nutrition Program (ONP), malnutrition has significantly decreased and anemia has been completely eradicated at both pilot care centers in India.
“The love and support that Asa received from his foster mom in Korea allowed him to thrive until he came home. His foster mother loved him like he was her own, and I believe that played a huge role in his transition to us. Because of Asa’s foster mother, Asa came home to us happy and healthy.” — Kari Schwendenman | Valdosta, Georgia

PILLAR THREE:
OUR MODEL OF ADOPTION For nearly 60 years, our adoption programs have continually expanded and changed — responding to insights from adult adoptees, birth mothers and adoptive parents, adapting to changing legislation overseas and at home, and incorporating new research on child development. Today, our adoption programs continue to grow. In 2014, Holt was chosen as one of two U.S. agencies to place children from Vietnam, following a six-year moratorium on adoption from Vietnam to the U.S. We merged with Sunny Ridge Family Center in Illinois and now we are providing domestic adoption services to families in that region. Today, we also continue to be the leading agency for children with special medical or developmental needs. In 2014, most children placed with adoptive families in the U.S had some form of special need, and over half had moderate to major special needs.

EXpanding parent education As the overwhelming majority of children now coming home are older or have a special medical need, what children need from parents is much more complex. In response, Holt has expanded our parent education curriculum to help parents be successful. We’ve also found that most parents want and need more training — and that training is most effective when it is spread out over the entire adoption process. Our three-phase curriculum starts broad, then focuses on issues specific to each family and each child. “Our parents in process training is pretty unique,” says Abbie Smith, Holt’s director of clinical services. “So much of the research that’s out there trains therapists. Instead, this training is geared for parents. It’s empowering for them.”
DOMESTIC ADOPTION Before considering international adoption, Holt always strives to place children in domestic families first — giving them the opportunity to grow up in the country and culture of their birth. HOLT PLACED
420 children WITH adoptive families in their birth countries In 2014.

hope & the triumph of the human spirit.” — Amie Wagner, adoptive mom to Addie Lou and Teagan, an older child with special needs who came home from Ethiopia in 2012
POST ADOPTION SERVICES Holt’s post adoption services include everything from counseling and birth search assistance to answering citizenship questions. When one adoptee and her sister began planning their first trip back to Korea since they left to join their family in 1965, she contacted Holt’s post adoption team for guidance. “You have been AMAZING in helping two lost sisters find their way to where we started.” In 2014, Holt provided 4,173 services to 2,328 families, adoptees, birth parents & MORE.
SUMMER CAMP for adoptees During another great season of Holt Adoptee Camp, 383 campers, ages 9-16, had the chance to learn more about themselves, discuss adoption, race and identity and, most of all, have fun! “It is a safe space for adoptees to relax and be themselves and never have to think about being ‘different’ — it was a life-changing experience for my daughter.” — Tamara Hamlish, whose 13-yearold daughter Aya attended Holt Adoptee Camp in Wisconsin
