PERCUSSION MUSKETS
THE CHILLINGHAM PURDEY'S The Earl of Tankerville of Chillingham Castle, Northumberland in 1832 ordered 35 sixteen bore musket rifles to arm his body of yeomanry, in the defence of his family. Whether or not Chillingham was ever attacked by rioters, or the rifles used in its defence is not known, but the condition of numbers 2 & 18 suggest that they had very little use. Please refer to "The Early Purdey's" by L.Patrick Unsworth, pages 106-7.

Holland & Holland have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed in 1897, at a cost of approx. £150.00. Note: By 1928 The Imperial Premier sidelock sold for $ 1200, which made it one of the most expensive guns on the market. By comparison, best guns by Boss, Purdey and Woodward were priced at the time from $900 to $1000, and the Holland & Holland Modele de Luxe cost $1150. According to former Webley factory manager Pat Whatley, very few Imperial Premier guns were built in either hammer or sidelock hammerless form, and consequently they very rarely appear on the market. Conditions concerning Vendors
"The Auctioneers" means Holt & Company, Auctioneers of Modern and Antique Guns. "The Auctioneer" means the representative of Holt & Company, Auctioneers of Modern and Antique Guns conducting the sale;

Goods delivered to the Auctioneers shall be deemed to be for sa le by auction unless contrary instructions are given at the time or in advance.

All goods will be insured by the Auctioneers whilst in their custody or in the premises unless written instructions to the contrary are received. The value of the cover shall be the gross sel ling price of the goods or, in the case of unsold lots or lots withdrawn before sale, the auction value as estimated by the Auctioneers. The premium for insurance cover shall be £1.00 (+VAT) per £100. The m inimum charge will be £1.00 (+VAT) per lot.

The Auct ioneers sha ll not be responsible for accidental damage o r loss unless directly caused by the negligence of their staff.

The vendor authorises the Auctioneers to deduct commission and any other proper expenses from the hammer price. He/she also accepts the Auctioneer's right to retain any premium paid by the purchaser.

The Auctioneers shall have the right to photograph and illustrate any lot consigned for sale and to use such photographs at their discretion. The vendor accepts without further consultation that a charge of £75 (+ VAT) per illustrated lot may be made towards the recovery of photographic expenses.

All lots w ill be sold at the Auctioneer's discretion unless written instructions to the contrary are received. Any reserve figure placed upon a lot shall be confidential between the vendor and the Auctioneers. In the event of a lot failing to reach its reserve, the Auctioneers shall be entitled to a commission of 5.9% (inclusive of VAT) of the reserve price, unless alternative charges have been previously agreed.
23.
A withdrawal fee of 5.9% (inclusive of VAT) of the lower estimate (or reserve price, if there is one) shall be payable to the Auctioneers for any lot withdrawn after it has been catalogued but before sa le.
"The hammer price" means the price at which any lot is knocked down to a buyer. " Del iberate forgery" means an imitation made with the intention to deceive as to authorship, origin, age or source, which is not so described in the catalogue and which has a value materially less than if it had been in accordance with the description in the catalogue.
The Auction 2. The highest bidder shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute, the Auctioneer's decision shall be final. 3.
The Auctioneer shall have absolute discretion to withdraw, alter or combine w ith any other lot all lots offered for sale.
4.
Al l lots are offered subject to any reserve prices imposed by the vendor.
5. Whilst every care is taken in the preparation of catalogues, the Auctioneers accept no responsibility for any inaccuracies co ntained therein.
6.
Lots shall be held to be at th e buyer's risk from the fall of the hamm er.
7.
Leg~I title sha ll not pass to the buyer until the purchase price together with t he premium has been paid in full.

The vendor indemnifies the Auctioneers against any claim relating to goods sold on his behalf.

Comm ission bids will be executed free of charge but must reach the Auctioneers at least one hour before the beginning of the Sale. Tel ephone commission bids must be confirmed in writing.
A vendor who enters for a sa le goods which are assets of a VAT registered business must disclose this fact to the Auctioneers. He/she must also provide his/her registered number and indicate whether or not he/she intends to operate the Special Scheme for Antiques and Works of Art.
26.
The Auctioneers act as agents only and therefore shall not be accountable to the vendor for any sum until payment has been received from the buyer.
11. The buyer sha ll not rely purely upon th e catalog ue description but shall satisfy himself as to the physical condition and description of each lot.
Forgeries
12. No lot shall be removed until the purchaser has paid in full for it and for any other lots purchased. All purchases must be removed at the buyer's risk and expense within two working days following the sa le. A charge of £2.00 (+VAT) per lot per day will be made on purchases not rem oved within this period. 13.

Should the purchaser fail to pay for and remove any lot within seven days fol lowi ng the sa le, th e Auctioneers sha ll have the right to re-sell the lot at auction or by private treaty without giving notice to the buyer. Any liabi lity to the buyer shall be limited to the hammer price origina lly paid.
(a) the lot is returned in the same condition as at the time of the sale; (b) written proof of the forg ery accompanies the lot and the buyer demonstrates to the reasonable satisfaction of the Auctioneers that in the light of the catalogue description the lot is a deliberate forgery;

(c) The general opinion of schola rs and experts at the tim e of the sa le would have indicated that th e lot was a deliberate forgery: or,

Should any lot provide to be a deliberate forgery, the Auctioneers, upon receipt of written notice of this fact within one year of th e sale, shall rescind the sa le or repurchase the lot for an amount eq ual to the hammer price plus premium (inclusive of VAT), provided that:
(d) scientific processes in exi stence at the time of the sa le would be establi shed that the lot wa s a deliberate forg ery.
By making a bid, prospective purchasers acknowledge acceptance of these Conditions.
