THE DUDLEY RANSOM COLLECTION, TA SMANIA Dudley Ransom was a descendant of Thomas Ransom, an English convict sentenced to transportation. He was sent to Port Arthur in Tasmania, and then to Norfolk Island. Subsequently pardoned, he settled in Tasmania and became a successful landowner. Dudley Ransom was born in 1889 and was brought up on a property in Northern Tasmania. He worked for his father without pay, as was the custom, receiving an income only from the sale of the skins of rabbits and water rats which he had shot. When the First World War started, he and most of his friends jumped at the chance to enlist and see the world. They joined the AIF and treated the whole exercise as one long party. Once they arrived in France, however, they encountered the grim reality of war and witnessed their friends being killed around them. Volunteers were being recruited to fly disabled planes from France to England and Ransom, expecting to be killed in any event, jumped at the chance. After minimal training, he began flying the damaged planes back to England for repair. Few of the pilots survived: many were shot down and many more crashed. Recording the deaths of his friends in a diary, Ransom's entries become increasingly brief and his writing small and spidery. Eventually, he too crash landed, was severely hurt and was invalided out of the war. It was almost certainly at this point that he met Lady
Eleanor Grogan of Melcombe Bingham, who forged a strong friendship with the young Tasmanian. She gave
him some of his earlier pistols and a blunderbuss and, subsequently, bequeathed to him a fine pair of silver mounted flintlock pocket pistols by Pattison of Dublin (Lot 2). Ransom returned to settle in Tasmania, where he married and raised a family. Throughout his working life, he remained an avid collector. By the time that he retired, his collection had become so large (it eventually contained over 1,800 pieces) that an additional fortified room had to be built to house it. His grandchildren nicknamed this "the dungeon". Not only were there pistols from every period, but also armour, scent bottles, New Guinea artefacts and memorabilia from convicts. Ransom was a keen shot and maintained his collection of guns in good repair. In 1950, Ransom passed ownership of the collection to his son, but continued to house it on his behalf. By 1972, however, the gun laws had become more stringent and, in order to ensure that it could stay in Tasmania, the bulk of the collection was sold to the Launceston Museum where it is still displayed in a separate section. A few selected items were retained by Ransom's son in Sydney, Australia and the lots in this sale are drawn from this collection. The Constabulary Gun, 1885 (Lot 12), was provided to the militia in Tasmania in the early convict days. The brass blunderbuss with spring loaded bayonet (Lot 13) is said to have been used by Cobb & Co. in the Australian Gold Rush days.
SPECIAL NOTICE Lots 15 and 16 will require the buyer to produce a relevant British Firearms Certificate or Registered Firearms Dealers Licence before these weapons may be released.

See Inside Back Cover Illustration £2000-2500 It is reputed that the .360 inch was invented for scientific purposes for shooting hummingbirds and the like. Robert Edward Fenwick was born on February 26th 1876, the only son of Thomas and Mary Fenwick. He was outlived by his mother and, through her diaries, we receive an insight into his life and loves, primarily shooting. He inherited Burrow Hall, near Kirkby Lonsdale in Lancashire, upon the death of his father in 1919. He suffered from disseminated sclerosis and diabetes and he almost lost the use of his legs, walking with the utmost difficulty. When he could no longer shoot standing up, he would do so from his wheelchair. As his disabilities became more severe, he confined his shooting to the grounds of Burrow Hall and bought rabbits for
Page 18
release into the ground s. It was at this time that he bought the .360 bore shotgun by Thomas Bland as he could no longer handle the larger bores on account of his disability. Fenwick ordered the .360 double barrelled boxlock ejector shotgun and cartridges on January 26th 1927 from Thomas Bland and the gun was delivered on May llth 1927. Its serial number is 17897; it has 28 inch nitro barrels, a 14 inch stock, and it weighs 4 lb. 9 oz. Mary Fenwick wrote detailed entries about the purchase and arrival of the shotgun, showing its importance in enabling her son to continue his passion. Fenwick never married and died on 4th May 1928. He was so infirm towards the end of his life that he rarely had the opportunity to shoot. Upon Mary Fenwick's death, the .360 passed to the present owner's father. It passed to the present owner on the death of his father in 1983. 201 JOSEPH HARKOM .410 PUSH FORWARD UNDERLEVER SINGLE BARRELLED HAMMERGUN, serial no: 6893, 24in. nitro barrels, 2 ~in. chambers, chequered engraved frame, underlever spring broken, 14in. figured pistol grip stock, weight 4lb. 8oz. £150-200 202 J.
