Connections, Holy Cross College’s official magazine, is published twice a year.
Letter from the President The cover of this issue of Connections is an appropriate image of a “big thing” happening on campus right now. The O’Connor Commons at Holy Cross College conveys both spiritual significance and community meaning reflective of the Holy Cross tradition. The meadow of the Commons enhances the religious ideal of living simply and without distraction or imposed urgency, along with the collegiate aspiration for learning in a community bonded by shared beliefs. In the communal sense, the Commons conveys hope, as it is a sacred space in which residents are able to dream of themselves as better than they are and what they might become. This aspect is clearly demonstrated in the Brothers’ long-standing mission to help transform young people through a residential experience of growth in mind, body, and spirit. At Holy Cross College we continue to give young people the opportunity to experience close, personal relationships with their teachers and peers; to gain competence to see the needs of the world around them; to develop courage to act on behalf of others; and to extend the familial spirit of this place so that all humankind are cherished as children of God and our brothers and sisters. Our Catholic intellectual tradition affirms that our body and soul needs this kind of communal support and spiritual nourishment to discover personally the full truth that is our incarnated Lord, Jesus Christ. After 49 years, that Holy Cross mission is still alive and well as we prepare citizens for the 21st century. Thank you for being part of our extended family and please consider a trip back to campus. A stroll across the open space of the O’Connor Commons can serve as a reminder to keep a space open in our lives for the surprises God has in store for those who have hope. Sincerely in Holy Cross,
Br. John R. Paige, C.S.C., PhD

Changes in Faculty Bring New Energy
Clockwise from top Left, Martin Sulkanen, Yuhui Lu, Chris Stackowicz, Alan Jones, Katherine Oswald and Cosette Fox.
“Simply put, I want to teach young minds,” says Martin Sulkanen, the new associate professor of physics at Holy Cross College. “I can’t resist the opportunity to be a part of the rejuvenation of math and science here at Holy Cross,” he adds. Although Sulkanen’s resonant voice brings a surprising sense of poetry to physics, his credentials are anything but abstract. He received his Ph.D. on “Pulsar Magnetospheres with Jets” from Cornell University, and has been a research scientist for noted scientific organizations such as Michigan Research and Development Center, Leidos, Inc., and NASA. Sulkanen sees encouraging more intense and diverse research opportunities for students as an integral part of his future at Holy Cross. “There are projects for every level of interest,” he says. “Whether it be using artificial physics to simulate soft matter behavior or studying rotating neutron stars, students here will do real research that impacts their future careers.”
Sulkanen is one of six new full-time teaching faculty at Holy Cross College this year, all of whom bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and ideas to the Holy Cross academic landscape. The sciences were also fortunate to add Dr. Yuhui Lu to the chemistry program. Lu has two Ph.D.’s: one in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame and one in physical chemistry from Sichuan University, China. He is currently building the curriculum and lab requirements for a Holy Cross organic chemistry emphasis. In the future, he plans to collaborate with nearby schools to give Holy Cross students even more research subjects. The liberal arts were fortunate to add three new professors. Among them is Chris Stackowicz, who is known in the South Bend Art community for his immense public murals including the 933 Bridge Project, the East Race Mosaic and the Perley Fine Arts Academy mural. Stackowicz became an associate professor of art at Holy Cross with a big vision in mind. He envisions the college

Holy Cross Appoints Key New Staff In September, Michael Brach was made vice president of advancement at Holy Cross College, bringing more than 25 years of senior-level experience in higher education advancement and marketing to his new position. Most recently, he was the associate vice president for advancement at Valparaiso University, and previously, he served as senior director of development at the University of Notre Dame. “Mike brings a professionalism and energy to Holy Cross that has already started to transform the school. I can’t wait to see what big things he has in store for us,” says Br. John Paige. In addition to 16 years of experience in advancement at Notre Dame, Brach’s connection to the Congregation of the Holy Cross runs deep and close to home. His oldest son, Chris, is a junior business major at Holy Cross, and his three younger sons are all in Catholic schools in the South Bend area. Brach believes that “there is a tremendous amount of momentum at Holy Cross College.” He looks forward to working with the Holy Cross Brothers and community to further advance the college’s mission, vision, and values. Kristina Barroso Burrell began her Left to right, Kristina Barroso Burrell and Michael Brach. experience with Holy Cross as an adjunct professor of communications in 2014. In September, she accepted a new position as coordinator of campus and external communications for Holy Cross College. With a BA in English from Andrews University, and a JD from the University of Notre Dame, Barroso Burrell brings a wide range of communications and marketing experiences, including layout and design, writing for web and media and social media. As a former major gifts officer with Andrews University, she also has an understanding of advancement in higher education. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to tell the Holy Cross story internally and externally to bring our past, present and future together,” says Barroso Burrell. She will be responsible for media relations, campus communications and collaborating with admissions and advancement on marketing strategies.
as a place where art and music can combine to influence all parts of academic life. “Having an outlet for creativity adds to quality of life,” says Stackowicz. “That’s what drives students. I see Holy Cross as a place where I can build a program and facility for fine arts that will inspire creativity, not just here, but in the whole community.” The psychology department brought Dr. Cosette Fox to join their faculty. Fox’s specialty is in experimental psychology, and she has done research on glucose transporters and the effect of glucose on memory. “I love the Brothers’ mission to educate hearts and minds. I want to do my part to increase interest and excitement for psychology here,” says Fox. She will be expanding the psychology course offerings in the spring to include neuroscience and crosscultural psychology. The Spanish program was boosted by the addition of Dr. Katherine Oswald to the program this year. Oswald will be teaching Spanish language
classes this year. However, her research background is in medieval Spanish literature, and she hopes to add Spanish literature classes to the curriculum. Oswald will also lead the spring 2016 global engagement trip to Peru. “There is much to learn from the past,” she explains, “but it is important to ground that knowledge in the present.” Each current and future Holy Cross senior gained an important ally in their search for a post-graduate career. Alan Jones came Holy Cross from Northeastern Illinois University in August, 2015, where he had been the career counseling program coordinator. As the director for the career development center and instructor of the Senior Capstone class at Holy Cross, he says “I want students to learn better reflective thinking so they can understand their strengths and interests and have the confidence to take risks to pursue their career desires.” Jones plans to use an emphasis in narrative career counseling to support Holy Cross juniors and seniors as they matriculate to their ultimate potential.

Welcome Home for All by Hank Gettinger
O
n September 19, students, faculty, staff, alumni, family and friends gathered by the Millennium Arch on a brisk windy day for the annual Welcome Home picnic. A picnic lunch and games were enjoyed by attendees, and band comprised of Holy Cross students provided musical entertainment. “Our annual Welcome Home picnic is a great time for our entire Holy Cross community to come together and celebrate through music, games, and delicious food. This year, we were happy to have so many of our friends and family come back to celebrate the college’s 49th birthday,” said Betsy Fulnecky, director of annual giving and stewardship. The picnic is a great time to develop connections between the many members of the Holy Cross family. For our alumni, this day is a chance to meet with friends and see the changes around campus, see their former professors, and hear directly from the students what campus life is currently like. For students, it’s a day to eat free food, play games, have fun with their professors, and the Brothers of Holy Cross. They might even be lucky enough to receive some wisdom from the visiting alumni. This was also the first time that many of the alumni had the opportunity to see the new O’Connor Commons, a green space in the center of campus that replaces the old student parking. halls and academic buildings, and gives Holy Cross a real “backyard” for our faculty, staff, students, and alumni to play in. For Mike Brach, vice president for advancement, this was the first college event he had the chance to attend. “The picnic was a great opportunity to meet many of the people that make this place so special. It really felt like a family gathering, and everybody made us feel so welcome”. The picnic is a new event designed to bring members of the Holy Cross community back to campus with their whole family. After the picnic, many attendees headed across the street to see the Notre Dame football team defeat Georgia Tech in a close, thrilling game. Next year, Holy Cross College will celebrate 50 years of educational excellence. While the college hasn’t released its picnic plans yet, the 2016 Welcome Home picnic will undoubtedly play an important role in kicking off a year of activities to celebrate this milestone anniversary.

“Michael used basketball as a starting point to develop his identity. Holy Cross gave him the chance to get involved instead of getting lost in the masses.” — Mike McBride, men’s basketball coach

student’s time in college is a journey during which the way people, places, and things are perceived can either be challenged or affirmed. For Michael Ognar-Pettersson, class of 2016, these formative years will have a lasting impact on the rest of his life, both personally and professionally. With an ocean between him and his three half siblings in Sweden, Michael grew up as an only child. Although he started college in his home state of Michigan, he found himself missing a sense of connectedness to the greater student body. He left in search of a college with a feeling of community among the students. Michael found what he was looking for at Holy Cross. “Michael used basketball as a starting point to develop his identity,” says Mike McBride, assistant athletic director and coach of the men’s basketball team. “Holy Cross gave him the chance to get involved instead of getting lost in the masses.” Not only is Michael a member of the Saints basketball team, he has found academic success as a Delta Epsilon Sigma Honor Society inductee and personal growth in his role as a SOAR (Saints Orientation, Advising, and Registration) representative. “In the last few years, my perspective of the world has really changed,” Michael says. One of the
experiences that impacted him the most was a visit to the local chapter of the American Red Cross to visit and speak with Iraqi refugees. Michael says spending time with the refugees increased his level of global understanding and compassion. He was able to look past differences in religious beliefs and find empathy with the refugees’ experiences on a basic human level. “I’ve seen how people of Islamic faith are portrayed in the media,” he says. “The Muslim people I met challenged my perspective. I may be in a leadership position for a company one day. I want to approach people without bias, regardless of religion or ethnicity.” At its core, Holy Cross College seeks to create opportunity for students to become responsible and compassionate members of their relative communities. In his time here, Michael has embraced and embodied this mission, which transcends curriculum and has permeated every aspect of his college experience. Assisted by family, coaches, and friends, Michael has found his place as a leader among his peers.

“To be here and see it — I couldn’t visualize from the pictures how beautiful it is ... it’s so much better than I even hoped.” – Barbara O’Connor
Theof Holy Heart Cross by Kristina Barroso Burrell

hat do you need?” It is the question at the heart of the mission of the Brothers of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, and it exemplifies the generous spirit of John V. O’Connor. Inspired by her late husband, Barbara O’Connor gave Holy Cross College a gift in John’s memory to create the O’Connor Commons, a wide expanse of green space at the center of the college’s campus. The O’Connor family first came to visit Holy Cross from their home in California when their son, Andy, started looking for a college. Barbara was worried about Andy moving so far away, so a friend recommended Holy Cross for its nurturing atmosphere. The O’Connors were immediately impressed with the supportive community they found at Holy Cross. Once Andy decided that Holy Cross was the place for him, the O’Connors began making regular trips to Indiana, and

it didn’t take long for them to feel that they, too, were a part of the Holy Cross family. As time passed, Barbara and John could see how much Andy was maturing through his experience at Holy Cross. They felt inspired to give back to the college that had given so much support to their son. “We love supporting Holy Cross because we can make a real difference here,” Barbara says. One of the early contributions of the O’Connors’ legacy at Holy Cross was an endowed scholarship that emphasized support of Eagle Scouts at Holy Cross. However, there was something greater that the campus was missing: a true collegiate atmosphere. John and Br. John Paige frequently spoke of how Holy Cross needed something more than a parking lot in the middle of campus. Sadly, though, John O’Connor passed away in 2012 before plans to alter the college’s landscape could be made.
After discussions with Br. John about the needs of the college, Barbara graciously provided the funds for Holy Cross to create a central commons space in front of the Pfeil Center, between the academic buildings and the dormitories. The impact of the O’Connors’ philanthropy will be felt at Holy Cross for many years to come. The O’Connor Commons is a space that ignites a spirit of community and connection which Holy Cross had been missing. “To be here and see it — I couldn’t visualize from the pictures how beautiful it is,” Barbara said after visiting Holy Cross for the dedication of the Commons in October, 2015. “It’s so much better than I even hoped.” Indeed, it is more than we had dreamed as well. It is the perfect place for our students to call their second home.

A Man With a by Kristina Barroso Burrell
Mission
There’s little doubt that Brother James Leik, C.S.C., is a man called to service, and he has spent his life heeding that call. After entering the United States Air Force as part of the Korean War draft, his records were “lost” and he had to repeat the first three months of his military career. “I had to do basic training and get all my shots twice,” Br. James says ruefully. “But it saved me from the front.” Because of the delay, Br. James had only just left to fight in Korea when the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed on July 27, 1953. After returning stateside, a sense of missing purpose brought Br. James to the Brothers at Notre Dame. After he took his vows to become a Brother of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, he was given an assignment that would last the rest of his life. Along with Brother John Driscoll, C.S.C., Br. James helped found Holy Cross Junior College in 1966. “We just did what needed to be done,” says Br. James, downplaying his role in those early days. The two men agreed that Br. John would manage academic affairs and Br. James would manage the facilities and the money. To be fair, they would both teach classes. Over the next 21 years, the two men managed Holy Cross Junior College simply and efficiently, much the way they began it. True to the Brothers’ mission to
“make a difference in the world by being present and available,” Br. James took on whatever job needed him. “The only place I haven’t worked is the library,” he says, without hyperbole. Br. James has been a professor, bookstore manager, director of financial aid, corporate treasurer, and director of institutional advancement. He was even acting president, but, “only until they could find a replacement.” Holy Cross has changed in many ways since its humble beginning. It’s gone from formation center for Brothers to an all-men’s school to a coeducational institution, and, more recently, from a junior college to a four-year institution. Br. James has worked steadfastly with the college and its community every step of the way. Even after retiring from teaching, Br. James stayed on as full-time archivist, making a detailed record of Holy Cross’s history because, as he says, “There is no one story—the day to day is the story.” Currently he is working on digitizing Holy Cross’s myriad photos, statements, reports, and historical documents. “I’m only in the 90s,” he says, holding up a stack of photographs, “so I have a long way to go.” But as his Holy Cross legacy shows, there’s no doubt that Br. James will keep on until the job is done.
