Connections Holy Cross College Alumni & Friends
Connections, Holy Cross College’s official magazine, is published twice a year.
Letter from the President This issue of Connections represents values that are integral to Holy Cross College—the importance of relationship, community, and yes, connection to each other. When we stopped publication of the magazine several years ago, that decision was hard to make, but it was essential given the transition that Holy Cross was going through at the time. Now we have successfully emerged from that period and the College has expanded with our second highest enrollment. Physical changes are also happening on campus, as we build a new residential facility, reconfigure our campus to create a quadrangle in the center of campus, and remove the parking lot. Most importantly, we heard from you, our alumni, friends and parents. You told us that although you feel connected—through campus events, letters, student videos, and online media—you have missed the Connections magazine. The magazine is back; we hope you enjoy its return and will let us know how we are doing. In this issue we highlight the Global Experience, one of the Four Pillar Experiences at Holy Cross College. Please take time to read about the transformational impact the global community has had on our students, staff, and faculty, in the classroom, on the athletic field, and abroad. On June 25, the College will host its first gala, Through the Eyes of Faith, which will support global immersion trips for our students and the Center for Global Perspectives. I look forward to seeing many of you at the gala. Now that we have reinstated Connections, I am committed to continuing this tradition. Thank you for being a part of the Holy Cross community and may God bless you.

Crossing Borders, Building Relationships by Dianne Barlas, DMin, Director for Center for Global Perspectives
E
ach time I meet a group of Holy Cross College students who are preparing to travel with the Center for Global Perspectives, I have a keen sense of the significance of the work that lies ahead. Amid the mixture of anxiety and excitement is an emerging spirit of adventure—a palpable readiness to be changed by the approaching experience. Recognizing and talking about the transformation that occurs when we travel to the developing world is challenging. Upon our return it is difficult to find the right words to describe how the people we met and the stories we heard have impacted us. We can agree that we now see the world differently. More importantly, we see ourselves as part of something larger, and a new perspective begins to deepen our identity as global citizens. This is the Holy Cross Experience—sending our students across borders of all kinds where they gain the competence to see and the courage to act. The Global Encounter experience, once called “Through the Eyes of Faith,” began in 2000 as a campus ministry trip. The original intent was to enter into the simple rhythm of the Holy Cross Brothers’ community life, to witness their faithful response to God’s call and
to see the universality of the Catholic Church in action. When the College moved forward with the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies degree, the global experience became a core requirement; later the Center for Global Perspectives was established and an academic focus emerged. In the past 15 years, the college’s mission to form global citizens has found its home among the people of Ghana, Brazil, India, Peru, and Uganda. Three hundred and eighty-seven Holy Cross students have taken a leap of faith, packed their bags, and found themselves in the villages and neighborhoods of the emerging world. Global solidarity, the complexity and challenges of a global economy, education, equality, and environmental concerns were added to studying the Church’s evangelization efforts in Africa, Asia, Central and South America. Knowing someone’s name, sharing their table, and gathering together in prayer removes the boundaries and makes the borders that separate us less of a hurdle to overcome and more of a place where compassion and healing build relationships. Whenever our hearts are changed, it is a sacred moment; wherever that happens, it is holy ground.
“Our first task in approaching another people, another culture, another religion, is to take off our shoes—for the place we are approaching is holy.”
– Max Warren

Saints Soccer: A Global Team by Jordan Oyer, Sports Information Director, Holy Cross College
T
he Holy Cross College men’s soccer team has set the bar high for Saints athletics, winning on the field and blending student-athletes from many different cultures. The current roster is made up of players from 10 different countries spanning five continents. From Ecuador to South Korea, the men’s soccer team fosters an environment of cultural acceptance and appreciation in the locker room. The Saints have translated this multicultural approach to success with three consecutive winning seasons and three straight trips to the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. Head Coach Omar Gallo has developed the Saints into a team with a winning reputation. “Different cultures have different styles of play, and we encourage our guys to embrace the different styles of fellow teammates,” says Coach Gallo. “The multicultural backgrounds also allow individuals from around the world to build unique friendships and find what they have in common. These friendships go well beyond the soccer field, but are clearly seen on the pitch during games. You play harder when you are playing for a friend.” The players gravitate to the Holy Cross program because of the diversity on the roster. Sophomore Anesu Tabengwa came to Holy Cross College from St. Andrews, Scotland, on the advice of a former international Saints player, Alex Clarke. “I was put in contact with my former (club team) captain and
now good friend Alex, who helped me see the vision behind the men’s soccer program. He sold me on his incredible experience at Holy Cross College and described it as a place where you will meet people from across the globe, enjoy playing your sport, and find your true calling in life, all at the same time.” In some cases players come from countries where English is not their first language, but the Holy Cross staff and faculty have become exceptional at helping students adapt. “At first it was a little hard to adjust because I had to learn the language better,” says junior forward Alfredo Molestina of Guayaquil, Ecuador. “But the people here were very helpful. Now I know I am getting a really good education and the campus community has been great.” Jonghyun Son from South Korea wants young people from his country to consider Holy Cross. “If they come here to get their higher education, they will be able to pursue being professional soccer players and use their knowledge from Holy Cross College for their life.” Coach Gallo believes the size of the school and the welcoming Holy Cross community makes the difference. “As a Canadian international, I can relate quite easily to our international players. The transition seems to be much easier as these kids aren’t just another number at this school, but given personalized attention to succeed.”

Holy Cross College
Inaugural Gala M
ark your calendar for June 25! Holy Cross College is pleased to host its first gala, Through the Eyes of Faith. This event will support Holy Cross students participating in the Global Perspectives Program. With your support, we can ensure that our students will have the funds to travel internationally on a global immersion experience. Each year Holy Cross College sends about 24 students abroad to communities in Brazil, Ghana, India, Peru, and Uganda. At Holy Cross, education is a holistic experience, and we seek to engage the mind, body, and spirit. Students are part of a close-knit community and collaborate in programs designed to enhance their competence to see and courage to act. The short-term global immersion trips are hosted by the Congregation of Holy Cross communities of priests, brothers, and sisters, and provide students with the opportunity to experience what they have studied in the classroom by participating in the culture. By the time they return
to campus, our students are able to evaluate how other cultures perceive them, and they gain a new appreciation for their own opportunities. In this inaugural year of what will be a biennial event, Holy Cross College will present Daniel B. Fitzpatrick, President and Chief Executive Officer of Quality Dining, Inc., with the 2015 Fidelis Award. This award is given to an individual who exemplifies a “life lived in faith.” We will also present The Center for Hospice Care with the 2015 Service Organization Award. Both of our honorees have made significant contributions to the greater Michiana community and deserve this recognition. The gala will be held at the Gillespie Center at the Hilton Garden Inn. We hope alumni and friends will join us for this special evening. For more information on the gala and to purchase tickets, please call the College Relations office at (574) 239-8368 or register at http://collegerelations.hcc-nd.edu/gala.
Following the completion of my junior year at Holy Cross College, I had the opportunity to travel abroad to Uganda, Africa. Being a Holy Cross student allows you opportunities that no other institution can provide. Deciding to take my global perspective trip to Uganda was one of the most profound experiences of my life. Immersing myself into a different culture gave me the opportunity to develop relationships with, and a better understanding of, individuals in a thirdworld African country. This experience enabled me to come back to the United States and be thankful for the blessings I have in my life. Thus, I am appreciative to Holy Cross College for providing me the opportunity to grow as a leader academically and spiritually through this global perspective trip. — Robert Lulgjuraj ’15, SGA President
