Transfiguration (2021) Angelo Ray Martínez, M.F.A.
Acrylic on canvas, 36.25 by 36.26 by 2 inches. Permanent Collection of the South Bend Museum of Art.
This painting re-imagines the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. Utilizing images of the fish, a symbol used by early Christians to depict their faith, this aquatic scene depicts the moment when Jesus’ divinity is revealed to the disciples, Peter, James, and John, in a flash of light, while the prophets Moses and Elijah appear at his sides (Matthew 17:1-8). The pixelated representations signify the mystical presence of these past prophets, in contrast with the more naturalistic depiction of the living disciples and Christ incarnate.
