LETTER from the

Beauty Editor

I

am a firm believer in second chances. Mainly because I was given a second chance to start my life over, with a family and a friend base that supported me in my decisions to make a drastic change. One that would be for the better for me in the long run. I just had to prove that the change I made and the costs that it caused my loved ones was all worth it in the end. If you had told me at the beginning of my University Career that I would be creating my very own fashion magazine, I would have said you were crazy. I was a science nut through and through.

Jaclyn Tansil

Co-Editor & Chief of HOLY Magazine

All throughout my younger years all I ever wanted to be was a scientist. My jobs may have changed over the years but I always remained within the realm of science. But then when I got to University that die hard love I had for something I thought I would be passionate about forever wasn’t the same anymore. I was no longer driven to pursue my childhood dream.

After taking a leap of faith and landing in the journalism program at Ryerson University I felt like I had found something that I could do and do well. Fast forward and fast-track two years and lots of cry-your-eyes-out-at-night-projects and now...I am in my final year working on my final project of my undergraduate degree. Crazy how time flies and how times change, even when you are to swept up in the moment to realize it. This Holiday issue of the magazine I, as Co-Editor and Chief helped to create, was a piece that was a representation of taking a leap of faith and diving head first into a world that re-ignites a fire to find the youthful passion and call of a kids dream career. And who says you can’t do all that while looking cute??

JaclynT.

s an individual born with a creative mind and an eye for pleasing aesthetics, I tell stories not only with my writing and editing skills, but also with my photography talent.

Fashion is the way for me to combine my passion with my career path. I love taking pictures at the fashion shows, interviewing designers and working with fashion brands. I was born into the family of creative individuals involved in the fashion industry who taught me how I can meet the needs of my artistic nature, which constantly craves to be visually inspired, through the fashion. My style is based on the rule ‘less is more’, ‘90s fashion trends and simple designs. Throughout the years, I went through a lot of experimenting with my style to finally figure out what fashion re ally means to me.

Amanda Skrabucha Co-Editor & Chief of HOLY Magazine

It is essential for me to be honest with myself when I choose my outfit—if I do not feel comfortable and confident in it, I will not wear it. I like to think about fashion as a tool that is able to improve my image and, moreover, empower my personality when is well used. As a fashion editor at Holy Chic, I want to share my creative writing skills and visionary fashion ideas to inspire the readers. My goal is to show ideas and philosophy behind the everyday fashion.

Party-ready Greta Constantine’s Go big for a New Years Eve Party, or go home!

In a Toronto area studio, designers Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong created Greta Constantine, an accessible luxury line of ready-to-wear women’s wear, which name is derived from the combination of the names of people dear to the designers. Over the time, Greta Constantine became a conceptualized and glamorous persona that challenges the fashions of today for the women of tomorrow.

From the Parisian runway, Toronto-based Greta Constantinepresented a ready-to-wear Spring Summer 2017 colletion at FashionCAN show on Oct. 17, 2016. Designers Kirk and Stphen, considered the “jersey boys of Toronto,” are known for creating lavish line of women’s wear and unconventional silhouettes.

Sitting overtop hyper-feminine silhouettes with a sporty edge, the presented looks proved that a reworked wardrobe staple could transition into a wardrobe statement.

In the candy colour palette, sharp-shouldered leather and fur bombers stood their ground overtop sparkling bandeaus and bustiers while exploring the idea of confident femininity. Staple pieces of the collection arrived in the form of a richly textured black peacoat and rosegold varsity jacket with contrast ribbing and covered buttons.

9

lastest ready-to-wear collection Shimmery designs defined by a minimalist-maximalist tension brought disco vibes to the removable catwalk in Yorkdale shopping mall. The major looks of slips and bodysuits with undergarments in liquid and metallicized sequins shined beneath silk tulle overlays. In addition, designs were embellished with ruffles, feather trims, and voluminous sleeve detailing. All of these elements created an atmosphere of a retro flashback to ‘80s fashion.

New Years Eve outfit inspo from the runway show

1

Stay romantic & chic:

a sequin dress – This timeless (and super shiny) piece will always make you stand out from a party crowd and embrace your romantic side

2

Get a silhouette for all seasons:

bodysuit and tulle

– Who said bodysuits can only be worn during the summertime? Pair your bodysuit with a tulle skirt and voila!

3

Invest in pastel:

candy colours

- Burnt peach, baby blue, pastel pink, and light yellow will be your best friends next season, so why not make friends a bit earlier?

4

Accessorize with sequins:

scarves and arm gloves – Wear them not to keep you warm, but to give your outfit a punchy and edgy look

Fashionable Looking Wearable Tech

The whole wearable story began with Nike+ FuelBand, an activity tracker with a basic and simple design, introduced back in 2012. This was the time when wearables were getting more attention from the manufactures and acceptance from customers.

While recent seasons have found wearable technology making all sorts of obvious technological advances, most of the time the look is decidedly out of step with the times, where sartorial value is concerned.

Ringly

Ringly

Here is where the problem begins. Millennials, who are the target customers for wearables market, love its technological aspect. However, their love is not big enough to scarify their fashion sense and to either run around in sweatpants to match a boring design with a gym-look accessory on their wrist or to choose eveningwear as everyday wear to match a luxurious and really pricy piece of jewellery with technology.

18 Smart jewellery and Millennials’ needs “The most popular wearables for Millennials are health and fitness notifications and safety accessories all specific to smart ewellery said Tom Emrich a wearable tech e pert and a founder of We Are Wearables community who was recently listed as the third most in uential person in wearable tech in the world Counting steps and calories as well as social fitness competition act as personal coaches who keep track on physical activity of Millennials This is really important in the era when many of them are attach ed to Cs laptops or even smartphones Emrich said

“From the not fi t on st n po nt m n M enn s re n ntereste n h n moments hen the re not t e to the r phones Emr h s

Smart ewellery allows Millennials to receive notifications when they receive one on their smartphone but in a way that enables them to keep their phones away Furthermore the features of some smart ewellery include prioriti ing senders and filtering specific types of notifications Having something like an SOS button available on the wrist in another key factor within the wearable technology space Smart ewellery is being used as a means to communicate when in danger a help situation and a crime or assault event Emrich added

19 Smart jewellery: fashion-first approach and startup companies “Smart jewellery is a fashion accessory that has computational functions such as the ability to sense, log data, or provide haptic feedback. A lot of startups are trying to capitalize on this, as these pieces can have more versatility in everyday life and within one’s wardrobe. The price point is also lower, which increases its accessibility,” said Erin Lewis, who is a research assistant at OCA niversity maker e ploring new techni ues fine ewelry and wearable

Ringly

Ringly is a notification ring designed based on the company’s core belief that technology can be more discreet and smart. Its users can receive mobile alerts on their ring through vibration and subtle light patterns. First and foremost, the ring is focused on the design.

“We wanted the design to be something that women could seamlessly integrate into their wardrobes,” said Christina Mercando d’Avignon, who is a founder and CEO of Ringly.

“Secondly, we miniaturized our technology to ensure the ring was discreet We had to find the right balance of fashion and function,” she added. Notification Rings are available in five different styles, each handcrafted with a semi-precious gemstone. The rings are set in a matte k gold or gunmetal plated stainless steel, ring base.

Bellabeat

Bellabeat’s Leaf is a sleep, activity and reproductive health monitor that its users cope with stress through built-in breathing exercises.

Ashley Chloe Inc.

HelixCuff by Ashley Chloe Inc. is a one-si e-fits-all sleek aluminum bracelet that stores a pair of Bluetooth earbuds around one’s wrist in a stylish way.

This smart piece of jewellery connected to an app provides insights and helpful reminders to keep its users on track. Bellabeat’s Leaf comes in two designs, Nature and Urban. It is a small leaf-shaped piece of wood and eco-friendly degradable plastic encased in a stainless steel clip that mimicked the veins in a real leaf.

“We shaped the leaf the same way that Nature shapes the curves of every single leaf on every tree. To be unique,” the website says.

It is designed in a way that allows its users to experiment while wearing it, either on a chain as a necklace, as a bracelet with Bellabeat’s leather strap, or as a brooch clipped onto one’s clothing.

“The most challenging part of creating a wearable device s efin te the s n s Angela Pan who is a founder and CEO of Ashley Chloe Inc.

You do not want to create something that is bulky beacuse no one wants to have a bulky device on their wrists. Transforming technology into a product that will look fashionable and that people will like was the hardest part we have gone through. We have designed the smallest size of the earbuds in the world that also combine with the great sound quality and noise reduction technology,” she added.

Smart jewellery and the Internet of Things Right now, wearable technology has not really shown what it can bring to the table. Essentially, wearable technology is a part of a larger trend that is happening in technology, called the Internet of Things. Outside of fashion, another reason to wear a wearable device is to be a part of the global network of connected objects. “For example, my home already has smart locks that respond to my phone so that the doors automatically open when I’m nearby - handy for when you’re carrying bags or a coffee! I also have the HUE lighting system that can be controlled by my phone. I can see these types of devices being more integrated into wearables and less reliant on mobile phones,” said Chelsea Klukas, who is a co-founder of a wearable technology fashion show MakeFashion, and a designer passionate about combining fashion with wearable technology.

Ringly

Much greater opportunities will present themselves when wearable devices are connected to broader systems and that can work together. “The challenge right now, is that it is hard for customers to understand why wearable technology is important because they see only a small part of its overall capabilities,” said Emrich.

ou don’t need to break the bank to get in on this fall/winter beauty trend that seems to be taking the beauty industry by storm! This fashion season saw the return of all things that shimmered and glittered as the biggest fashion shows in the world started up. Even the clothes that adorned the models shimmered and glittered with every step down a well lit runway. But the trend is not being worn in only a specifc trendy look on the face. It is actually worn almost haphazardly on any plane of the face; places ranging from the ears to noses and brow bones to even a metallic coating of the lips. “I think what everyone is wearing right now is kind of ‘do-your-own-thing’, it’s very on trend with makeup, hair and fashion in general.” Says Leigh Cavanaugh, co-creator of Clionadh cosmetics and professional makeupartist. This easy and wearable beauty trend can be worn as simple accents to accompany one’s makeup look. But if you are really looking to spice up your look this holiday season, don’t be afraid to apply some glitter to more unconventional areas of the face for a jaw dropping party crasher look.

nstead of slapping on glitter into the folds of the eyelid, why not channel a fusion of Lady-Gaga and Alexander-Mcqueen-esk styles and pile on that glitter under the eyes in a range of geometric designs. From what we have seen on the runways this fashion year, Glitter is the new highlight! Use glitter to accentuate all the highpoints of the face where the light would normally hit; just under the brow bone, the highpoints of the cheek bones, the cupids bow! Maybe even all over the face too! “Glitter is beautiful and fun and it adds a little POP to what would have otherwise been a boring and albeit simple makeup look,” says Lamees Wajahat Events Coordinator of RyeBeauty and a makeup specialist. And to add a little more dimension to ones rich lipstick application, applying a little loose face and body glitter like the one sold by Nyx for $9 is easily applied and makes kissable lips…Smoochable!!!

TREND ALERT:

Strobing in Highlight

Strobing, came into the limelight and became one of the beauty industry’s latest obsessions, all because of a Kardashian, Kim K to be specific. As the usual aesthetic that accompanies the Kardashians this beauty trend was delivered to the general public via Kim’s social media platforms, Instagram and YouTube specifically. A picture and a video posted with Kim having her makeup professionally done by makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, shows him giving a tutorial on how to apply this trend to a seemingly bare faced Kim Kardashian. Strobing as Kim K herself referred to, is the new contouring. Or Non-touring, as Queen K dubbed it herself. After several months of all us ordinary folk struggling to master the cream contouring that Kim had made famous in the previous months, the non-touring effect was the complete 180-degree version.

“A lot of the big brands are now doing the rainbow highlight,” says Maggie.

Using less products and almost no blending required. In the video, Dedivanovic, uses a mix of brushes and sponges to first apply a cream highlight to Kim K’s face.

Applying a generous amount to the bridge of the nose, the cupid’s bow, the highpoints of the cheek bones, the inner corner of the eyes, brow bone and the temples. For some, even highlighting the chin is not an uncommon practice, but then again the application is all personal preference. Unlike contouring, non-touring was focused more on the application of highlight products on the highpoints of the face where light would normally hit. While contouring focused on accentuating the hollows of the face and also accentuating the high points at the same time.

After the cream highlight was finished being applied, Mario followed up the look by going over top of the cream with a powder highlighter. This method of applying a powder over the cream intensifies the highlight while at the same time setting the cream so that it does not slip throughout the day. Kim Kardashian has received some backlash from some individuals, in regards to who was the first person to use the strobing method. Many people have spoken up saying that strobing and contouring were methods that Drag Queens have employed in their makeup routine for many years before Kim K had even heard of the method. Needless to say the debate as to who was the first, Kim K was surely the first to make the trendy method, public knowledge. Strobing became popular in March with the release of Kim K’s strobing video, however the methods of the beauty community have already shifted and glam-ified what the Kardashian’s have already trademarked as a popular look. Enter the now supped up versions of the powdered highlighters with the release of the Rainbow highlight, called Prism, that almost effectively broke the internet with its first Instagram debut. The six colored highlight was heavily pigmented and gave the appearance of a shimmery rainbow when applied in one swipe across the cheekbone. The Prism highlighter created by Florida born, indie makeup artist, Jenna, and her makeup brand, Bitter Lace Beauty became an instant hit seemingly overnight; with her highlighters selling out of stock within a few days.

30

31 Her innovative and creative designs of a multicolored highlight catapulted the inspirations of other makeup brands to follow suit and essentially challenge what had been, the everyday acceptable nude highlight colors that suit and matched the person who was wearing them. A Toronto-based indie makeup brand was one such company to embody inspiration from Jenna and experiment with their own beauty brand creation. Clionadh cosmetics, created by two bubbly sisters, Leigh and Maggie Cavanaugh, started their beauty brand in the basement of their two story home in Toronto’s west end. Their range of highlighters differ from colours, designs and the overall size of the pans. “[Bitter Lace Beauty] was the first one to get us onto color. And funny how right afterwards, you have the [Anastasia Beverly Hills] Glow Kits coming out...Becca.... A lot of the big brands are now doing the rainbow highlight.” says Maggie. The turn-around within the fashion world is an ever changing landscape. “The Makeup game has really stepped up in the past couple of years. You know looking back like 10 years or so....not that many people where hyped up about makeup and now...Everyone is into it and getting so creative with it!!” says Leigh.
