CRUSADER NATION YEAR IN REVIEW 2012 – 2013

A NEW ERA FOR HOLY CROSS ATHLETICS DEAR CRUSADERS, We are well into the fall semester and our fall sports teams are halfway through the season. I hope you have had the opportunity to visit campus to cheer on your favorite team or attend an away match to support our Holy Cross athletes. A dedicated Crusader athletics fan myself, I have the privilege of serving as the Chair of the Athletics Committee of the Board of Trustees. It is in that role that I write this letter—to both update you on conversations taking place about the future of our athletics program at Holy Cross and to ask for your continued support of our student-athletes, coaches and programs. The Board of Trustees met on campus on Sept. 6-7 and the Athletic Committee had a very full agenda. Most importantly, the Committee and the Board reaffirmed our commitment to a strong Division 1 athletics program that achieves the following four objectives: •

Attract superior student-athletes who are intent upon participating in varsity athletics and provide a positive experience for those students once they matriculate;

Provide a positive experience to the entire student body, many of whom are attracted to a vibrant athletics program;

Maintain and enhance the pride among and the connection to the wider Holy Cross family; and

Raise the College’s profile throughout the country in a positive way, ultimately helping to grow the admissions pool, attract desirable students, and increase the College’s national reputation.

We all understand that our present athletics program is not adequately meeting all of these objectives and we are committed to strengthening a number of areas that will enhance the experience of all students and will help our athletics teams compete with increased success and recognition. The Board engaged in a productive session to talk about these issues and I have summarized some of our deliberations here. RESOURCES: It is critically important to provide our student-athletes with the tools they need to be successful: equipment upgrades, adequate facilities, talented coaches and travel support for team competition. Increased resources in all of these areas are critical in order to remain competitive in the Patriot League. We have made strides, but we must enhance our resources for athletics, improve the experience of our student-athletes and restore pride in our programs. FACILITIES: We recognize that improvements must be made to the indoor athletic facilities at Holy Cross in the near future. A renewed commitment to health, wellness and recreation for the entire campus community will be central to this plan as we renovate facilities and add sorely needed practice and competition space for our varsity athletes. I look forward to sharing the plans with you as they are finalized. We see this new commitment as a partnership of many communities (alumni, students, faculty, administrators and coaches) to move Holy Cross athletics from the status quo to a higher level. COMMUNICATIONS: Crusader Nation, which has been a popular publication among Holy Cross athletics fans, is going digital to reach a larger audience. This version is a recap of the 2012-13 Holy Cross athletics season that celebrates the accomplishments of Holy Cross student-athletes in the

WE ALL UNDERSTAND THAT OUR PRESENT ATHLETIC PROGRAM IS NOT ADEQUATELY MEETING ALL OF THESE OBJECTIVES AND WE ARE COMMITTED TO STRENGTHENING A NUMBER OF AREAS THAT WILL ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE OF ALL STUDENTS AND WILL HELP OUR ATHLETIC TEAMS COMPETE WITH INCREASED SUCCESS AND RECOGNITION.

sports arena, the classroom and the community. It also recognizes the record-breaking number of donors who supported our athletics programs through the Crusader Athletics Fund last year. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have supported our athletics programs and help to bridge the gap between the resources we need and the resources we have. Finally, I want to let you know that the College has hired the firm of DHR International to conduct the search for our next Director of Athletics. A search committee has been established to represent a cross-section of College leadership, trustees, faculty and staff. Senior Vice President Frank Vellaccio will chair the committee

and members include Christina B. Chen, Director of Academic Services and Learning Resources, Kevin Condron ’67, Chair of the Board of Trustees; Ericka J. Fisher ’96, Associate Professor of Education, and Paul Irish, Associate Dean of Students. I will also serve on the search committee. Recently, Executive Vice President Glenn Sugiyama and his associate Pat Richter, Executive Vice President at DHR, were on campus to interact with members of the college community. They discussed the search process and the skills, experience, and qualities we are looking for in our new Director of Athletics. I am extremely optimistic about our future. We have renewed commitment from the Board of Trustees and

the College to elevate the athletics program and to expect excellence—as we do from every other area at Holy Cross. I look forward to partnering with all of you as we enter this new era for Holy Cross athletics. Sincerely,

William M. Doran, Jr. ’77, P16 Chair, Athletics Committee Please email your questions or comments to crusaderathletics@holycross.edu.

excellence » • Holy Cross takes seriously the personal development and academic achievement of all student-athletes. As a reflection of this commitment, Holy Cross has been recognized nationally for our high scholar-athlete graduation rates. During the 2012-13 academic year, Holy Cross athletic teams were recognized for achieving a perfect 100 percent graduation rate, according to the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) Report, released by the NCAA. The Crusader programs to post perfect graduation rates were baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s golf, men’s ice hockey, women’s ice hockey, women’s lacrosse, women’s rowing, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball, men’s swimming and diving, women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, women’s indoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field, and volleyball.

In addition, Holy Cross’ overall GSR for all student-athletes was 98 percent. This mark is tied for the fifth best in the nation among all Division I institutions with Colgate, Columbia, Duke, Harvard and Yale, behind only Dartmouth (100 percent), Bucknell (99 percent), Brown (99 percent) and Notre Dame (99 percent). • In addition, 11 Holy Cross varsity athletic teams received Division I Academic Progress Rate public (APR) recognition awards from the NCAA. These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top-10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The public recognition awards are part of the broad Division I academic reform effort. • Each semester the Patriot League honors student-athletes who excel in the classroom as well as on the playing field from each of the 24 League-sponsored sports with recognition on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible for selection to the academic honor roll, an athlete must have a 3.20

grade point average or higher during the academic semester which coincides with his/her sport. The Crusaders placed 259 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll during the year. • The Patriot League honors student-athletes who achieve a 4.0 grade point average with Academic All-Patriot League honors. The Truman Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships for college students to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or elsewhere in public service. The scholarship, which provides $30,000 for graduate study, was awarded to 62 college juniors from across the country with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to a public service career. There were 629 candidates nominated by 293 colleges and universities. Reppucci is the sixth student from Holy Cross to ever earn a Truman Scholarship. • Five Crusader athletes were among a group of 35 Holy Cross students who were selected as Dana Scholars for the 2012-2013 school year: Jordan M. Nunn excelled on the ice during his four-year career, posting 39 goals and 30 assists for 69 career points. This year, he scored a team-best 16 goals and had 11 assists for a career-best 27 points. He tied for second on the team in points. His 0.55 goals per game were tied for first in Atlantic Hockey and 10th nationally. Nunn maintained a 3.67 total grade point average as an Economics major, earning consecutive Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team honors. On top of his commitments as a student-athlete, Nunn started the Power Play Points for Pink fundraiser for breast cancer. Through donations and sponsorships, every power play goal scored at Crusader home games raised money for Pink Revolution, an organization dedicated to supporting early detection and prevention strategies, funding clinical research advancements and promoting survivorship programs in central Mass. through its affiliation with the UMass Memorial Comprehensive Breast Center. This past season Power Play Points for Pink raised more than $18,000. Nunn has also taken part in Crusaders for Kids, a program established by the players to bring Worcester children to other events on campus and in the community.

“Working for the Food Bank is an incredible experience because we are able to give something back to the Worcester community. It is hard to find time to do community service with school work and lacrosse, but I am happy to have the opportunity to go to the Food Bank every month and volunteer my time because Worcester has been my home for the past three years. No matter how tired or exhausted we might be from school and lacrosse, it is worth it. Doing some heavy lifting for a few hours at the Food Bank helps so many families and it is rewarding to know we can give something back.” — Christina I. Amendola ’14, women’s lacrosse

About the Leadership Academy The mission of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy is to support Crusader studentathletes in their quest to become world-class leaders in athletics, academics and life. Holy Cross is partnering with the Janssen Sports Leadership Center to create the curriculum for the Academy.

The Holy Cross Leadership Academy is focused upon leadership development programming for student-athletes which targets three specific groups based upon their classification as well as their readiness to assume leadership roles in three categories: Emerging Leaders, Verteran Leaders and Leadership 360.

Emerging Leaders

Designed for a select group of “high potential” sophomore and junior student-athletes, the Emerging Leaders program provides prospective leaders with the insights, strategies, and skills necessary to become effective leaders on their teams, on campus and in the community. Through workshops held twice a semester, interactive exercises, action learning experiences and readings, the Emerging Leaders program provides a strong foundation for student-athletes to develop into effective team leaders. The emphasis of the program at this

level is creating effective Leaders by Example while setting the stage for Vocal Leadership. Program Objectives: • Identify and develop high potential leaders in their sophomore or junior years • Create solid Leaders by Example and set the stage for developing Vocal Leaders • Build a strong network of peer leaders • Develop leaders who support and learn from current team captains/ leaders (succession planning) • Teach prospective leaders how to gain respect and develop leadership skills within their peer group

Veteran Leaders

Designed for team captains and veteran student-athlete leaders from all teams, the Veteran Leaders program provides established team leaders with advanced leadership training and support. The

program teaches student-athletes the critical team leadership skills and insights necessary to be effective Vocal Leaders as they manage and conquer the dayto-day responsibilities and challenges of leadership. In addition to the education, the Veteran Leaders program also provides student-athlete leaders with a strong peer network to lean on and learn from throughout the school year. Studentathletes meet twice each semester to learn and reinforce leadership principles and share successes, frustrations, and lessons. Program Objectives: • Encourage established leaders to step up and be Vocal Leaders on their teams • Provide established leaders with ongoing support as they tackle the tough issues of team leadership • Provide established leaders with a solid peer network for guidance and support

CRUSADER NATION YEAR IN REVIEW 2012 – 2013

• Review and extend the insights and skills necessary to be a responsible and respected leader • Establish a solid, cooperative and ongoing partnership with the coaching staff

Leadership 360

Designed for senior leaders who have successfully completed both the Emerging and Veteran Leaders programs, Leadership 360 focuses on applying leadership skills to positively impact the team, athletic department, campus and community at large. A significant component of the Leadership 360 program is for each leader to undergo a 360-degree evaluation of their leadership skills. The 360 evaluation involves teammates and coaches anonymously rating their leaders using the Team Leadership Evaluation. Based on averaging the ratings of their teammates and coaches and comparing them to their selfratings, the leaders are able to clearly see their leadership strengths and areas

for improvement. The leaders then create a comprehensive and customized Leadership Development Plan to build upon their strengths and target their areas to improve. Program Objectives: • Help leaders clearly see their strengths and areas to improve by undergoing a 360 Evaluation • Develop a comprehensive and customized Leadership Development Plan to maximize strengths and minimize blind spots • Provide leaders with the skills and support to effectively troubleshoot the challenges they face throughout the school year • Encourage leaders to apply their leadership skills to impact the campus and community • Provide leaders with high level leadership training and experiences that make them highly attractive to interested employers

thletics play an important role in the lives of students and their parents, alumni, and the life of the College. It is important to provide our studentathletes with the tools they need to be successful: equipment upgrades, adequate facilities, talented coaches, and money for team competition travel. Increased resources in all of these areas are critical in order to remain competitive in the Patriot League. We have made strides, but endeavor to enhance our resources for athletics, improve the experience of our student-athletes, and restore pride in the Purple. In 2012-13, the Crusader Athletics Fund, the fundraising arm of Holy Cross Athletics, reached new heights, with a record breaking $986,842 for Holy Cross Athletics from a record 2,567 donors. The all-sports fund, as well as baseball, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse and soccer also broke dollar records, while baseball, field hockey, lacrosse and tennis secured the most donors in program history. Thank you to everyone who made a gift to support our sports this year. Your support provides additional funding for coaching, recruiting, equipment and travel budgets, giving our Crusaders the competitive edge they deserve. Your ongoing generosity to the Crusader Athletics Fund enhances the experience of our scholar athletes, as they compete against the best Division I programs. Over the next few years, CAF aspires to grow to $1.5 million dollars annually. ■

Thanks to the Crusader Athletics Fund, we were able to make several positive changes in our program! We traveled outside our region to play a match in Florida, which was not only an opportunity for us to face a new opponent, but also served as a great teambonding experience. CAF has also made it possible for us to hire a full-time assistant coach, Corrinne Archibald, and we are already seeing the benefits. The increased funds have allowed us to make more recruiting trips and find student-athletes from all over the country. ~ Erin Cady, head coach, volleyball

With the help of the Crusader Athletics Fund, we were able to travel directly to New Jersey after our win over Sacred Heart instead of driving back to Worcester. This allowed for our players to concentrate on their next opponent instead of worrying about traveling back and forth to campus. We practiced at a current player’s high school and went on to beat a strong Big East team in Rutgers. ~ James F. Morrissey, head coach, men’s lacrosse Gerald F. Dreher ’73 Jacob M. The Crusader Athletics Fund helped the women’s rowing team buy new uniforms, lift gear, travel outfits, travel bags and oars. These are all required equipment for the team that, in past years, we have had to pay for ourselves. These former rowers, parents and friends were very generous and our team will be forever grateful. Furthermore, these funds helped cover the cost of our trip to England last summer when we rowed in the Henley Royal Regatta. I know that was the height of my rowing career and I feel so fortunate to have been able to go. I cannot stress enough how grateful I am to those that donated; they influenced greatly my rowing experience here at Holy Cross. ~ Bridget A. Schirripa ’14, women’s crew

He did it again. David A. Ticchi, Ed.D ’67, a long-time supporter of Holy Cross, is completely invested in our athletic programs. For his 40th reunion in 2007, he made a $27,000 current-use gift to the newly formed Crusader Athletics Fund. Each of the 27 varsity programs received $1,000 of his gift, which he did to highlight the equal importance of each program at Holy Cross. This year, he made a planned gift, contributing a gift annuity of $27,000 to the Crusader Athletics Fund, again with each sport receiving a $1,000 gift.
