The past stands as a mountain behind us, the future beckons with a path walking endlessly into time. The challenge of the present is to carry the wealth of knowledge and experience from the mountain to the covenant of the future.

The call of the future consists of recognizing the reality of both the good and the evil, the caring and the non-caring, the mature and the foolish, and coping with the decision to choose from them, It is the obligation of each to choose the good, the caring and the mature,

Our nation, in its Bicentennial Year, is honoring her past, reflecting upon her heritage:

"... and for the support

of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor." The Bicentennial celebration would not be valid, however, without an honest examination of conscience, a realistic assessment of the state of man. We have inherited the lives, fortunes and sacred honor of so many who have gone before us, entrusting us with today. Because today is not perfect, we are charged with facing and appeasing the hungers of the human family. To this end, our Bicentennial Year is concurrent with an international Eucharistic Congress: a body of people concerned and caring, planning for the future.

The words are written for and about each one of us. Always, we must look to the individual. It is the duty of each man to glean from the past, and live fully in the present, in order to build a peace-filled future. The duty is a privilege and lends dignity to the individual who says "Yes." Strength and glory spring from that response in it is the edge of fear softened, and through it are the wings of hope unfolded. The covenant is renewed.

Today, here in Torresdale, we gather to break ground for a nurse education building. It, too, will rise, God-willing, near the site of Holy Family Hall, our original academic building which was dedicated on this very day twenty years ago, and from which more than 1,000 graduates have already emerged to fulfill their individual destinies. We, too, will dedicate this new structure to Mary, begging her intercession on behalf of all those who have invested time, creative energies, eff'orts and prayers in this undertaking as well as for the teachers and students who will be entering the building in the future to promote the noble profession of nursing.
