Freshman Class Officers: (L to R) Debbie Starr, President> Eileen Henry, Vice President> Mary Jo Angell, Treasurer> Joy Santomo, Secretary.

We, the freshman class officers, would like to thank all of you who have made our first year at Holy Family College so special. When we arrived here last fall, we were uncertain of not only ourselves, but also our futures. With the support and help of all those around us. we were able to formulate ideas and set up goals. We could not, however, have achieved anything without the support and trust of the entire Holy Family community. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to have been elected class officers and we would like to thank the freshman class for giving us such a wonderful learning experience. We are truly looking forward to the years ahead with strength and dignity due to the many friendships we have made here at Holy Family College. We feel confident that we may better ourselves, each other. and our school in the future, and we look forward to the challenges we will face. Thank you once again, and congratulations to the freshmen, for you have earned the trust and respect of everyone around you.

Debbie Starr President, Freshman Class

I am very pleased to be the moderator for the freshmen the Class of l9S9. Their enthusiasm. curiosity and vitality are contagious, and it's easy to see why everyone "catches freshman fever" when around them. For these newest members of our college family, I hope that the next three years are happy and healthy ones, and I wish that their dreams come true. Joan M. Joyce Freshman Class Moderator

Sophomore Class Officers: (L to R) Mary McGrath, Communications Representative> Tammy Garberina, Secretary> Chris Swanson, President> and Robert Tobin, Vice President. Not pictured: Maureen Byrne, Treasurer.

Looking back on this past year, I have to smile as I recall all of the things that have happened to the class of l988. Last year, we were known as the most spirited class. Though we still remain as involved as before, we are changing ourselves for the better. This year, we can say we are the class that cares. Our sophomores are always there when you need them, and that is what friendship is all about. Thanks to all of you who elected me president. It allowed me the chance to be there when you needed me. We are now halfway there, and our goal is in sight. We know where we are going and what we expect of ourselves. This class of l988 will long be remembered by all. When we finally leave Holy Family, we will have left our mark as the special people we are. Congratulations on being the class with class. Chris Swanson President, Sophomore Class

The class of l988 will have reached the midpoint in its college experience at the conclusion of the sophomore year. We see this as a crucial turning point. Most of you will become heavily involved over the next two years in preparation for various academic majors. My concern as class moderator is that you continue your enthusiastic endeavors in college and class activities. This class has shown exemplary energy. Involvement in college affairs has been a strengthening experience, not only for theisophomore class, but for Holy Family as well. Academic work in a specific field is crucial as you prepare to begin careers and enter the job market. But just as worthwhile are the days you spend at Holy Family involved with classmates in social and college activities. Make the most of the latter half of your college years in every dimension. Junior Class Officers: (L to R) Mike D'Angelo, President; Dave Benson, Vice President> Maureen Roche, Communication Representative> Dave Roller, Treasurer> Rita Witkowski, Secretary> Dr. McCormick, Moderator.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who made this such a wonderful and successful year for the junior class. Things change so quickly these days that people sometimes just do not know where to turn for help and support. The junior class found where to turn, Holy Family. "Family" is the best way to describe our school. Everyone loves you and treats you with respect. A special bond forms and everyone treats you like a family member. Again, we would like to thank our "family" for being there and for allowing us to become members. I thank the junior class for allowing me the opportunity to serve as their president. I will always treasure this experience and will never forget all of the fond memories that it gave to me. Thanks, class of '87, you guys are just great. Good luck and God bless. Mike D'Angelo President, Junior Class

All of the anticipation of entering Holy Family College had passed for the members of the class of l987 when reality struck. and they completed their first rosters. Now they were officially freshmen. Adjustments in study habits coincided with the making of new friendships. The Christmas Rose blended with final examinations. Some courses grew more difficult, but spring was near and it brought hope. With the end of the semester came the end of many hours of study, research papers, and examinations. Freshman year also came to an end amidst happy conversations and recollections of social events. Sophomore year was now a reality, and the hope of the previous year reached fruition. Class games. picnics. as well as lasting friendships were realized. As the courses became more advanced, requiring more from each individual. the members of the class rose to the occasion, supporting one another even more than before. Another memorable Christmas Rose would be followed by writing of Valentines, more hard work and more laughs, and the semester's end. As the members of the new junior class greeted

Dr. Thomas McCormick, Junior Class Moderator.

each other during the last hot days of summer, they realized that now they were half way there. Their hope was strengthened and confidence was built up. The Campus Queen contest was replaced by the College Bowl. The laughter arose once again at the Mr. Holy Family College contest. New challenges in the classroom were to be met. A third Christmas Rose was enjoyed. Funds were raised for a scholarship honoring Kathy Kumor, a much loved graduate of the class of l985 whom God called home early. The juniors pondered the real issues and meaning of life. Ties among friends were increased. Floss continued to be "Mom" to her students as she devotedly prepared meals for them as well. The hope of finally becoming seniors was a reality. The perseverance of the class of l987 may be summed up in advice given by St. Ignatius of Loyola, "Pray as though everything depende'd on God. and act as though everything depended on you."

Lynn

When I was asked to say a few words about the senior class it was difficult. How could I summarize four years of our lives in a paragraph or two? It seems like yesterday that we entered the doors of Holy Family College, both apprehensive and unaware of what the future held in store. But the genuine interest and friendliness expressed by the administration, faculty. and students allowed for a smooth transition to a college environment. The academic standards of Holy Family encouraged us to strive for our full potential, not only intellectually but spiritually as well. I am certain that I speak for my class when I say that Holy Family has become a second home to us. The caring and self-giving of everyone involved with the college makes us a "family" in the truest sense of the word. My fondest desire for this class is to make the most of what God has given us. Hopefully we can use these gifts to make a lasting contribution to Holy Family and society. I would be remiss if I did not thank Sr. Patrice and Dr. Lynda Micikas for all their love, support, and prayers. I would also like to thank the members of the senior class of l9S6 for allowing me the opportunity to serve as their president, and I am truly grateful for this learning experience. John Parker Boland President, Senior Class

It's strange, and, I think, kind of wonderful, how as circumstances around us change, our perspectives change as well. Four years ago the class of l986 entered Holy Family College. They looked ahead to what must have seemed like an interminable sequence of classes, exams, papers and pressures. They probably couldn' even imagine graduation day. Four years was too far off, and they had too far to go, too much to experience. too much to feel, to learn and to enjoy. Sut now. as they look back. how do the four years look? Shorter, no doubtl And, I hope though full of hard work and grades and exams. full also of so much more: full of growth and learning and maturing and living, full of people and ideas and challenges and triumphs, full and complete and satisfying and very, very worthwhile. Have they seen themselves change? LVe've'seen them change. Do they sense growth? LVe've seen it and we'e proud of it. After all, that is what Holy Family College is all about. And how will the four years appear ten years, twenty years, forty years from now? Good, I trust, and right, like a special time picked out of life, a time filled with memories, of classmates, of friends, of faculty and administrators who taught and cared and nurtured and finally wished them God's richest blessing as they graduate. To all the seniors those of you I know so well, and those of you I don't know but, in a funny way, will never forget my love and best wishes. Like each class before you. you leave a part of yourselves behind as you go. Please know that all of us at the college hope and pray that you also take a part of us with you.

Message from the President pleased that over 190 new alumni will be going out into the community to serve humankind, to continue their commitment to the Holy Family ideal, teneor votis "I am bound by my responsibilities." The people of Holy Family have also contemplated the loss of loved ones this year faculty. students, family, and friends. A few of the many whose presence we shall miss are:

Sister M. Florence Tumasz, CSFN. Ph.D., was one of the founding sisters of the college. She was

the first academic dean, the first director of public relations, and a professor emerita of English. Sister died on April 7 following a brief Sister M. Francesca, CSFN, Ph.D. President

The events of l985-86 have given for celebration and for contemplation. The greatest cause for celebration has been the college's commitment to build a 77.000-square-foot instructional and student services building north of Stevenson Lane. Holy Family has embarked on a capital campaign to raise at least $ 3 million toward the total estimated construction cost of $ 8 million. Foundations, corporations, businesses, alumni, faculty and staff, and parents of past and present students are responding with enthusiasm to our request for their financial support of this vital project. Groundbreaking for the facility is scheduled for this fall, and a grand opening in the spring of l9SS

us much cause

is anticipated.

And while facilities are important to an institution like Holy Family, it is the people who truly make the institution what it is. The class of l986 is the largest ever to graduate from Holy Family. We are

illness.

Mr. Martin Greenbaum, a senior citizen who attended Holy Family for many years, died suddenly on February 26. Mr. Raymond Kumor, father of senior Ron Kumor and the late Kathleen Kumor (class of '85) died of a heart attack on March l2. And Sgt. Ralph Galdi of the Philadelphia Police Department was killed in the line of duty on March 3I. He was the father of senior Elizabeth Galdi and the husband of Betty Galdi, a secretary in Holy Family's business

of fice. In addition to these more personal losses. the Holy Family community also shared in the national losses of the space shuttle Challenger crew and the victims of terrorist actions across the globe. We pray for the repose of the souls of those who have departed from us, and we pray for continued heavenly guidance as we seek to fulfill our responsibilities with joy in our hearts in celebration of life and its unfolding opportunities.

l986 FAMILOGUE STAFF (L to R): Jenine Cicchitti, Terry Owczarzak, Marybeth Price, Beth Schmeltzer, John Boland, Chris Swanson.

We, the editors of the l986 FAMILOGUE, would like to extend our congratulations to the Class of l986. We hope the l986 FAMILOGUE captured the memories of your last year here at Holy Family: the hard work, the fun times, the friendships made. As you put this yearbook away on your shelf with past editions of FAMILOGUE, we hope the l986 edition will somehow stand apart. In years to come, we hope you'l be able to dust off the cover, flip through the pages, and relive some of your CELEBRATIONS from senior year. We'e worked hard and we overcame many difficulties in trying to record our year in pictures. 'We would like to thank our moderator, Deb Hodges, and Jostens'ales Representative, Phil Klein, for their patience, advice and support. Our thanks also go out to the staff who gave what they could, when they could. Lastly, we would like to wish the Class of '86 success and happiness in all future endeavors.

LVorld News Riots were an almost daily occurrence in South Africa as blacks protested Apartheid. In this photo, a white man runs from a jeering group of stonethrowing blacks in downtown Johannesburg as widespread violence continued to break out throughout the country.

A series of devastating earthquakes rumbled through Mexico City in September, and the death toll was in the thousands. Few in the metropolitan area of l8 million escaped the effects of the first quake, which registered 8.I on the Richter scalei or the second quake, which measured 7.5.

A Trans World Airlines jet with l45 passengers and eight crew members was hijacked in Athens, Greece, in June. The Shiite hijackers took the plane to Beirut, then to Algeria, and then back to Beirut. Most of the hostages were released within days, but the remaining 39 hostages were held for l7 days. One American hostage was killed.

An entire city block was destroyed in Philadelphia. Police tried to evict members of the radical group MOVE from their fortified rowhouse by dropping a small bomb on the building. A fire was started by the device, and about 60 houses were destroyed.

Four Palestinian terrorists hijacked the Italian cruise liner Achille Lauro while on a Mediterranean cruise. One American was killed. After the ship was released, the Egyptian government agreed to return the hijackers to the PLO. However, the hijackers were intercepted by American jets as they were flown out of Egypt. They were returned to Italy to stand trial.

Future Mistory Makers As the class of '86 prepares to make its way into the world, they leave behind many things: achievements, memories and friends. In this yearbook, we have tried to capture many of the memories but we wondered what the future would hold for the seniors after graduation. "What will the seniors do?" "Will all of their hopes and dreams they have worked hard for be

realized?" "Will their full potential be met?"

Holy Family graduates will play

a

special part

in the world. In this section of the FAMILOGUE we analyzed some of the graduates and their

special qualities. We tried to combine their personalities and talents to predict what the future might hold for them.

We hope all of the dreams of the Class of '86 come true.

Will Michele Garberina's teaching role be enhanced by the heroic efforts of Christa McAuliffe?

Will President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan step aside to make room for President Beth Schmeltzer and First Man John Boland? 67

Will the athletic achievements of Pete Rose be surpassed by the likes of Andrea Vettori and Marybeth Price?
