Dear Graduates, Kofi Annan, Ghanaian diplomat, seventh secretary-general winner once said:

of the United Nations and 2001 Nobel Peace Prize

There are no excuses...lf we are to show ourselves worthy of calling ourselves members of humankind; we must rise to this challenge. Our response will be no less than a measure of our humanity. This quote reflects the theme of the 2006-2007 Holy Family Familogue, Rising to the Challenge.

The occasion of your commencement from Holy Family University is a joyous event which celebrates your academic accomplishments with fellow classmates. When you first came to Holy Family University four or more years ago, we challenged you to attain knowledge in your respective fields of study, to demonstrate leadership, and to be of service to and show care for others. Commencement marks your successes in rising to the challenge time and time again. The attainment of your undergraduate degree opens up a world of opportunity for you to pursue and invites you to rise up to greater challenges, whether they be though further study or in the workforce. Your response to these challenges will determine the course of your life. The Holy Family University community is also called to rise to the challenge each day to provide the best for you, as well as, for those who will follow you. Our administration, faculty and staff are called to instill in you and to demonstrate to you by their example the intellectual and moral aspects of responsibility. Working together as a family, the University community recognizes its responsibilities and more importantly, applies them in their daily lives. These actions reflect the University's motto, Teneor Votis, (I am bound by my responsibilities) and the University's Mission. This strong commitment by all is what has made Holy Family University a viable presence in Northeast Philadelphia for the past fifty-three years. This was the vision of Blessed Frances Siedliska, foundress of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, which became reality with the founding of Holy Family University in 1954 and is continuously emerging with each passing year. The Class of 2007 is invited to rise to a new, life-long challenge. A challenge to create a more meaningful life for yourself a life that will, in turn, create and shape a better society and a more promising world. A world, as Kofi Annan would describe, that is worthy of calling ourselves members of humankind. It may seem like an insurmountable challenge, but always remember you are not alone. Please know that you are one of over 10,000 Holy Family University alumni strong. Each one of you is and will always be Holy Family University. We look forward to and welcome your future homecomings as an opportunity to hear of your progress and accomplishments.

The vocation of Holy Family University is to inform and aid in the transformation of all its family members. Kofi Annan also once said, "Knowledge is power. Information is liberating." Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.
