Dear Graduates,

Family HolyUNIVERSITY

Your university education is complete, and your commencement now places you at what could symbolically be called a crossroad. Thus, the theme of the 2008 Familogue has been very aptly chosen. The dictionary defines a crossroad as "a decisive point, an intersection of two roads." In other words, when we approach a crossroad, we have to make a choice as to which road will best take us where we want to go. In effect, then, our destination is the deciding factor as to which of the two possible roads we will choose. Tom Brokaw once addressed a graduating class with the words: "You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as your ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world."

Strictly speaking, we dont actually need a ticket to help us decide our path in life, but our education can certainly help to point us in the right direction.

According to Ray Disney, "Its not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are." At Holy Family University, you were the recipients of a values-based education, one that focused on family, respect, integrity, service/responsibility, learning, and vision. The years you have spent here have developed within you the ability to assume lifelong responsibilities towards God, society, and yourselves. The two roads you now face will lead you to either a good life or a great life, as Mr. Brokaws two tickets have inferred. Unfortunately, few people ever attain the greatness God has planned for them, because it is simply much easier to settle for a merely good life. Too many people believe that financial success, comfort, and personal freedom constitute a great life, and they spend themselves in these selfish pursuits. They fail to recognize the greatness that lies in a full and complete life, one that is truly significant because it makes a difference in the lives of others and impacts our world for good. A great life is more than professional success. It actually consists of achievement that starts with the pursuit of Gods will by using our own freedom of choice, and it ultimately transcends business or wealth. A great life is the result of making right choices, of using our God-given talents, not for personal gain, but in the service of others. A great life is identified by doing what is right and being faithful to our values in the face of opposition. The greatness of our lives will be measured by the impact we have made on the lives of others, and on how much we have done to change our society and our world.
