~ LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT We are the children of a technological age. We have found streamlined ways of doing much of our routine work. Printing is no longer the only way of reproducing books. Reading them, however, has not changed. Lawrence Clark Powell (American Librarian, Writer and Critic, 1906-2001)
We are certainly living in the "age of technology" or the "computer age," a world in which technology and social media play an undeniably momentous role in all facets of our modern American life. As we look ahead, this role will only continue to grow in importance and scope. Technology has influenced our life in such a way that it is very difficult to subsist without a computer. In the last few years, higher education institutions, in particular, have, indeed, become more familiar with social media technologies like blogging, video blogging, social networks and podcasting. We are no different here at Holy Family University as we seek to integrate increasingly complex technology into the academic environment to enable students to use mobile technology for academic pursuits in and out of the classroom, in the areas of science, math, the arts, business, nursing, and other disciplines.
At Holy Family, we are committed to using technology to ensure that eventually all Holy Family students have this experience to prepare them for the work world. We encourage faculty to embrace the new teaching/learning paradigm wherein they are no longer the "sage on the stage," but the facilitator and co-learner with students. Our University will foster new modes of teaching among the faculty and increase access to electronic textbooks and other texts. As a recent graduate in this technology-driven age, it is important for you to ponder some very critical questions. How does the Catholic education that you received at Holy Family strengthen the enduring human values of Family, Respect, Integrity, Service, Responsibility, Learning and Vision? In an age where everything is constantly changing at a rapid pace, how will Holy Family's education help you, as an individual, find stability, permanence, and strength? And, as we look to the future of technology, what is your responsibility, as an educated adult, to coming generations? The answers to these complicated, yet important, questions are not easily attainable. However, it is our hope that you have been equipped with the necessary tools to build upon your past achievements to respond in a thoughtful and successful manner to the challenges and triumphs of our present age of technology.
May God Bless you as you enter this new and exciting phase of your life.

DR. THOMAS MARTIN "I have been fortunate in the past decade to witness the transformation of Holy Family from virtually no technology to an innovative school employing advanced technology in education. A particular source of pride to me was being able to include innovative technology in synchronous hybrid courses. One week we meet in class, the next week we meet at the same time online, each student has a webcam and we can all see and hear each other during the online class.

Social networking has radically changed the way that students learn. It is no longer important to memorize course materials. Rather, it is important to know where to find the knowledge that you need from reputable Internet sources. Social networking has allowed me to maintain contact with my students who have graduated; this wasn't possible before social networking. I have a tremendous number of former students who are connected to me on Linkedln, Facebook, and by e-mail.
The last point that I would make is that the always-connected world of smart phones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers have generated new ethical issues. Holy Family students are grounded in ethical values; they are prepared to meet any future ethical challenges."

Dr. J. Barry Dickinson, Assistant professor of marketing in the School of Business, is one professor who embraces and incorporates many different types of technology and social media into his classes.
Medvec. PhD
His Principles of Marketing classes are assigned a social media project--they measure their online presence to get a baseline at the onset of the project by nGooglingu their names and submitting the results; they then create new social media accounts on Linkedin, Facebook, Flickr, Youtube, Twitter, etc. and analyze the improvement in their presence over time.
Mane Melmck UoeNlsor
Dr, Dickinson says, "One of the most important advantages of social media is the crowd sourcing effect. By having many people weighing in on a topic, an optimal solution is often developed. lt also connects people in a way that they don' often have to time to do so in 'real life.'" Mlcl of Arts

Today the most utilized form of communication has become known as social media. Most of us today take the act of communication for granted. If you think about it, communicating with others is something we do every single day of our lives.
Communication is defined as the act of conveying information, requiring a sender, a message and a receiver. Communication is a concept that has evolved just as much as we have.
Social Media is not easily defined. It includes internet, magazines, weblogs, social networking, videos, photos, cellular phones, and more. In general, it is the act of communicating through electronic technology. How many of us own a cell phone, have internet, or even have internet on our cell phone? How often do we stop to think of the advantage we have with Social Media? Not often enough. Social Media has expanded our way of communicating by allowing us to have direct and immediate interaction with others
at the touch of a button.

-Social Media to me is any website, application and blog that provides content for users. Those users then can comment and discuss about said content. Sites that thrive from user generated media tend to be the ones with big communities." Tom Bayer, Digital Forensics '1

Continuing an age-old tradition, Christmas Rose took place at Holy Family just before the holiday break. Students, faculty, alumni, family, and friends gathered in the Campus Center for mass, dinner, and a show put on by the students. Students serenaded the audience, the girls of SGA showed off their rap and dance skills, and the boys of SGA shook their groove thangs culminating in a night of entertainment, fun, and family.

Every April, a group of 4 students selected by Dr. Stephen Medvec travel to Harrisburg to participate in Student Lobby Day. Holy Family's delegation consisted of Jill Keeve, Catherine Bonner, Alexandra Moorhead, and Jesse Karpovich. These four students met with senators to discuss events and lobby for certain bills for the university.

David Young certainly made a positive and inspiring impact during his years here. On campus, he was a Student Ambassador, a First Year Experience Mentor, a work study student in the Alpha House, a percussionist in the Music Ministry, and a member of the Spirituality Group, the Senior Legacy Committee, and the Mission Effectiveness Team. Off campus, David has had a very strong presence in volunteering for his parish, St. John Cantus. He has been an altar server since 2001 and became the sacristan in 2006.
Recently he has also been doing ministry work for Our Lady of Fatima's youth group along with some other Holy Family students. By getting involved, David said, "I have been afforded the opportunity to grow into a more confident individual better prepared to face the working world." David has earned many honors including the Above and Beyond Award, the Dean"s List multiple times, the Ambassador of the Semester award, is a member of Kappa Delta Pi International Education Society, a recipient
of Named Scholarships, and had works published in the 2011 FOLIO. Upon graduation, David plans to become a full-time teacher, to not only guide students in academic growth, but also impact the youth in a positive way through mentorship. He can also see himself pursuing a degree in Psychology to possibly become a high school guidance counselor or maybe even a principal. "Any opportunity to help others is worth it. After all, we aren't placed on this earth to just serve ourselves!"

While Douglas Ulrich is 1 2012 graduating senior, in the future he hopes to return to Holy Family as an Admissions Counselor. This Psychology major with a minor in Religious Studies was very involved throughout his years at Holy Family. He was Senior Class President of the Student Government Association, Vice President of the Holy Family Rugby Football Club, and a member of the Senior Legacy Committee, Judicial Review Board, Campus Ministry, Student Ambassadors, and the Habitat for Humanity team that went to Mississippi in 2012. Douglas was also a baseball coach for the Holy Terrors Youth Organization. In addition, he has been placed on the Dean's List multiple times, received "Best Interview" in the 2011 Mr. Holy Family contest, and was selected into the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. "What I will miss the most is seeing all the people who have helped me grow and mature over the years, professors, faculty, and peers," Douglas said of Holy Family. His advice to underclassmen is to get involved! "Do not be afraid to go out and try something new, it's never too late. Do not be afraid to join something, college is an amazing opportunity to spread your wings and try new things."
Nursing major Aly Keihl from Pewaukee, Wisconsin said her favorite part of social media is "being able to look back and relive all the memories that I have had in my life. I wouldn't be anywhere without my past so it's great to look back at all my old memories with my friends and to continue making and posting new memories." Aly certainly made some great memories during her time here at Holy Family. She was a member of the Womens Volleyball team for four years and her favorite memories include her volleyball and nursing families. "I can't think of any of my favorite memories that don't include one of my girls. Whether it be Conference Championships, Christmas Rose, school breaks, study sessions, or letting loose on the weekends my second and third family will never be forgotten." Her advice to underclassmen would be to live every moment to the fullest. "College went by so so so soooooo fast and with the real world just around the corner don't let the moments pass you by." As for her future, her ultimate goal is to become a nurse anesthetist, but she also hopes to coach a championship volleyball team, stay close to her family and friends, and never forget the friends she's made here at Holy Family.

Annie McNulty, a Secondary Education English major, was very involved on campus at Holy Family. She was a Resident Assistant, a student mentor, a member of the Humanities Society and Yearbook, and a work study with Financial Aid and the Activities Office. She also participated in the Alternative Spring Break Habitat for Humanity trip for three years and was a Student Leader in her senior year. When looking back on her years at Holy Family, she said "I will miss the people the most - like Uncle Mike (McNulty-Bobholz) who really isn't my uncle, Matt Thomas, Brett Buckridge, Denise Shaw, Dr. Meagan Meyer, and Melissa Greco. These people have changed my life and I would not have done as well as I have here without them. And I'l miss my teachers who made me want to write for fun again (LM)." In the future, she wants to be happy and get married to her goofy fiance, teach English, and hopefully change one student's life like her teachers and mentors have done for her. "I would love to be the teacher that helps students see the fun in reading and writing again like a certain teacher here." Advice she leaves to others: "Do not be "too cool" to get involved - being a part of something can make a huge difference. It's good to be who you are rather than someone other people want you to be."

Corinne Yamada was very involved during her years at Holy Family. She was Editor of the Familogue Yearbook for three years, a staff writer for Tri-Lite, co-founder of Tiger Vision Network TV Club, and a staff member of Folio. She was also inducted into three honor societies inciuding Lambda Pi Eta, Delta Epsilon Sigma, and Kappa Theta Epsilon, earned Dean's List all four years, and was selected into the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Corinne was also the proud recipient of the Marion Ahrens Von Rosenstiel English Language Scholarship. Off campus, she was a leader of a Girl Scout Troop and also volunteered at her former elementary school. Her favorite memories from Holy Family include the many Christmas Rose celebrations she attended as well as her time spent as an intern with the Philadelphia Flyers in her senior year. She leaves this piece of advice for underclassmen: "Whatever you do, do well. Work hard, go after what you want, take risks, and it will pay off. Get involved, try new things, and challenge yourself to go out of your comfort zone. Graduation will be here before you know it and you don't want to leave with any regrets." In the future, she plans to work in the field she loves, travel to Europe, and cross things off her bucket list,

Katie Blumenstock was involved in many organizations on campus. She was the President of Math Club, was a Math tutor in the Center for Academic Enhancement, went on the Alternative Spring Break trip every year, was a First Year Mentor, and was a member of Music Ministry, Kappa Delta Pi, Kappa Mu Epsilon, and the Senior Legacy Committee. She also volunteered as a cheerleading coach for the Bucks County Cheerleaders. Katie has received just as many honors including the Dean's List all four years, the Above and Beyond Award multiple times, was selected into the Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges as well as being a proud recipient of the Gundaker Foundation Grant. Her favorite memories include Alternative Spring Break trips, singing karaoke with her "Math Hotties" and working in the CAE. Katie has plans of being a successful middle or high school math teacher and hopes to eventually become principal, then receive her doctrine. Along with her academic goals, she also hopes to get married and have a healthy and happy family. This Secondary EducationMathematics major leaves this advice for underclassmen: "Get involved as much as you can. Work your hardest and never ever let anyone tell you that you cannot accomplish something!"

"Being a senior here at Holy Family is actually VERY bittersweet. It's great because you are already so familiar with the school and know exactly where you need to go or be. Now the downside of being a senior here is that you need to say your goodbyes. You become so attached to the University and the people who are here, that you really don't want to leave."

"Since I am a transfer student, I have only been a student at Holy Family for the past two years. I'd like to thank the education course professors, especially the special education professors, for being so inspiring. I loved hearing Dr. Sullivan's stories about her experiences, family, and of course listening to her read us stories at the beginning of every class. I enjoyed Professor Ratigan's stories and experiences with her students in the past and also, Professor Walls'xperiences with his own son, which made learning about special education so much more meaningful. I also enjoyed Professor Frasso's course because I love literacy and she knows how to make it fun and engaging for all students, even the big

Upon graduating from Holy Family, Jeffrey Kinkaid, an Elementary Education major, hopes to build a successful teaching career and have a positive impact on the lives of his students. While at Holy Family, he was a very involved student, both on and off campus. He ran cross country, indoor track and outdoor track for the Holy Family mens team and he was also a camp counselor at Briarwood Running Camp, a member of a bowling team, and a tutor. Jeffrey also earned the Dean's Award, an athletic scholarship, and was the two time All-CACC Cross Country Athlete. His favorite memories of Holy Family are the times he spent with his team. 'When you see the same people on a daily basis, they become like a second family. As the days went on, I found myself looking forward to practice, and now that I am graduating, I appreciate them even more, and will miss seeing them every day." Today students are using technology more and more and Jeffrey is no different. "It helps me stay connected to friends and family when a busy schedule prevents me from seeing them directly. I also use it as a resource to contact someone if I missed information in a class or have questions about an assignment so it has certainly had a positive effect on my education throughout my time at Holy Family."

"I am
t
really looking forward to graduating from Holy Family because of its great reputation in the local and surrounding areas of Philadelphia. When I tell people that I went to Holy Family, even though they automatically think I am a nursing student, they still remind me of the name that the University carries.
t
Some things that I will miss about Holy Family are the small and intimate classes. I really enjoy having 12 students to share lessons with because it makes the experience that much better; instead of being lost in the crowd, everyone has a voice, opinion and answer to the course work. Being able to know your professors on a personal level makes you build a bond of trust and respect that makes learning so much easier."

"I
would like to thank three of my most influential professors - Doctor Leticia Diaz, Sister Johanna Gedaka, and Professor Pamela Fiynn. Each of them helped me to reach my full potential, not only as an Art and Spanish student, but as a person. I would also like to mention Doctor Kathryn Osenlund who heightened my love for acting. Though the theater courses were electives, they helped me explore my creativity and develop my ability to work with others. Each of these professors saw something special in me that I often did not realize, and motivated me to continue to develop my skills and talents in the arts and my love for the Spanish language."

Elementary Education major with a minor in Middle School Math and was very involved during her time on campus. She was involved in Residence Life, Drama Club, Music Ministry, SGA, PiGers, SAYS, and was a Student Mentor. She has also been on the Dean's List multiple times. "Some of my favorite memories actually involve my Drama Club. I have been a part of that since day one. I'm one of the "founding fathers" of it. I got to see it grow into what it is today and am very proud of those who are involved today and helped to make it what it is today. There are some very talented people in that group, and some of the best people you could get to know. The thing I will miss the most about Holy Family is the people. There are many people here that really do make you feel like you are part of a big family." Her plans for the future include going to graduate school and getting involved with a Residence Life program. Her advice to underclassmen would be to get involved. "The more involved in the school you are, the better time you have."
