Welcome glittery inhabitants of planet earth Whenever there’s something unicorn themed on Facebook or Instagram, I get tagged by friends, since I am the biggest unicorn girl there is. Not that I own thousands and thousands of unicorns objects, it’s just that when people think of unicorns, they always seem to think about me. Ofcourse I truly like that, since I like to believe I’m part of Generation Unicorn :) But anyway, besides unicorns, there are sooo many lovely mythical creatures, from all around the world. Besides unicorns I also adore mermaids, pegasus, dinosaurs, fairies and centaurs. With the help of many lovely contributors I once again created a wonderful world filled with the most beautiful creatures. Let’s start this marvelous journey...

The Legend of the Hummingbird by Hazel Colon A long time ago when the natives of Puerto Rico walked on their grounds, two people from different tribes would meet upon chance and question what they would do for love. Alida found a pool one day walking around the mountains. She fell in love with the pool instantly and would take frequent walks there to rest. One day she bumped into someone. That someone is named Taroo. Taroo has been living there since his tribe left him behind after an attack. The two got along fairly quickly as they talked and talked and talked. Thier close bond turned into a friendship and that friendship turned into love. Alida would make trips to see him everyday and make sure to keep her whereabouts a secret because Taroo came from a rival tribe and her father, the chief, would not approve. One day as she made her usual route she failed to notice that someone was following her and went she went back home her father approached her about her secret rendezvous. He immediately forbade her to see him and arranged a marriage for Alida. Alida was so distraught and prayed God to help her. God decided to answer help her and turned Alida into a beautiful, dainty red flower. That night Taroo waited and waited for Alida. The moon got tired of watching Taroo in despair and told him what happened. Taroo begged for help and God turned him into a bird so that he can find his love among the flowers. The next morning the natives found a bird flapping his wings with the speed of light touching down to every flower in its path. The flapping of its wings made a soft humming sound so they decided to call it a hummingbird. To this day the hummingbird can be seen kissing every flower. Still searching for the lips of his one true love; Alida.

Mythical Creatures vs the Naysayers of Normality column and artwork by Sarah Madera
“I want to fly around the world kissing every boy I meet like some cultured butterfly fairy but everyone keeps trying to catch me.” One Friday night, in a fit of frustration my friend Dani captured the challenge of living as a mythical creature in an average world through a simple text message. She understood the troubles that often occur when ethereal desires are stunted by the bitter naysayers of normality. As a child you spend most of your time looking up at the powerful adults of your life. You look for these role models to guide you through growing up and discovering who you are. But often I found that this dismal planet had little to offer. Besides the queens that were my mother and grandmother, I was not satisfied with the cookie cutter girls that were often portrayed in the media. I searched through books and television, finally finding solace in the stars, the sea and the magical lands of unicorns and fairies. The Little Mermaid, Alice in Wonderland and The Nightmare Before Christmas would be as good a start for any 8-year-old girl. Basic tales of outsiders trying to understand and find satisfaction in the life they had. Their lust for something different was relatable. But I was especially drawn to the oddities of the characters. How come I felt more connected to girls with fins, skeleton kings, and mad hatters. That’s when I realized I was not of this planet. As a Pisces, dreamland was my favorite place to be and the long list of books I read throughout my tween and teen years about witches and fairies greatly
nurtured that world of reverie. However, that’s all it was, a place to escape to privately. As I grew older, graduating high school & continuing into my first year of college in Chicago, I realized something horrible and wonderful at the same time. These so called adults were letting the world be drab and awful when they actually had the opportunity to make it whatever they wanted it to be! My infinity for mythical creatures as a child matured into my passion for a brighter world. The way I act now, although people may presume I’m childish, is merely the opposite. I approach the world with maturity so I am able to preserve my soul and spirit. I have no desire for the material concerns of everyday or the popularity contest that determines success. My focus is on learning, creating and loving. That’s all I need to do to be happy. I’ve figured out that much but it’s hard to fight off all the people in my world that are telling me that fairies aren’t real. As Peter Pan once informed us, a fairy drops dead every time someone says they don’t believe. However, this is not a lament to mystical beings or a wish to go along with the masses and live like everyone else. The point of all this is to assure my friend Dani and anyone reading this that they can be a cultured butterfly fairy! I can be an alien angel grl and my other friend is totally a unicorn! I know woodland fairies, vampires, mermaids, witches and princes. We all paint and color our world in the way that we want because we recognize that our spirit is all that we have. Listen and pay attention to your own spirit! The nature of freedom must be nurtured. Do this by continuously surrounding yourself with magical people. Create a positive environment and enjoy the openness of the outside world! People may try to crush who you are out of spite & jealousy but we mustn’t let them! There’s a whole world full of mythical creatures just like you! The contributors and readers of this zine are just a small handful of them! What I’m saying is that it’s important to reach out and support your fellow magical beans in order to keep us all alive! Mystical magic isn’t just fantasy if we believe it’s real.

There is a legend that in the sixth century, a mermaid visited a monk on the remote island of Iona in Scotland, asking for a soul. When the monk demanded that she abandon the sea for good, she left crying, her tears turning to pebbles which can still be seen on the beach today. Whether such an event took place or not, we define mermaids as legendary aquatic creatures with the upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish, originating in ancient Babylon and Assyria about 7000 years ago. Mermaids are sometimes associated with perilous events such as storms and shipwrecks, but also benevolence and falling in love with humans in all corners of the globe.
I’m sure most girls – in fact, scratch that, people – have dreamed of being a mermaid at some point in their life. I mean, who wouldn’t want to have luscious locks, a ton of treasured jewellery and spend their days swimming in beautiful oceans in a feisty gang singing and luring sailors to their deaths? For many, this fascination probably started with Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ or perhaps the beloved Nickelodeon show of millennial tweens, ‘H2O: Just Add Water’. We all did the Cleo, Emma and Rikki hand movements to swim like a mermaid in the pool, right? For me, it all started with a Saturday morning, eyes glued to the TV screen as Melody sacrificed her human legs to take to the waves like Ariel. A little later, I remember being completely captivated by the story of three Australian high-schoolers who found themselves with superpowers and scaly tales any time they came in contact with water. Digging out an old book I had from primary school about Mythical Monsters, you can read about merpeople as stunning and bewitching creatures that haunt the world’s oceans, wreaking havoc. The sirens of Greek mythology have influenced the features of mermaids everywhere, and Christopher Columbus even reported seeing mermen and women whilst voyaging in the Caribbean. We’ve all seen the click bait Facebook posts about ‘real life’ mermaid discoveries, but even as recently as 1961 there have been rewards to catch live mermaids and countless reported sightings. Whilst sceptics will brush off such folklore and wannabe believers like myself will hold on to the hope of the existence of sirens, my being cut on the rocks, having a splintered toe and stepping on a sea urchin last summer has made me no less dedicated to becoming a full-time mermaid.

Aquamarine (2006)
This is a story about two best friends who cross paths with an outgoing, curious mermaid by the name of Aquamarine. Friends Claire and Hailey struggle with a few problems until Aqua comes along and brings new adventures into their lives. This movie was a big part of my childhood as I was and still am a firm believer in mermaids! I remember wishing night that a mermaid would suddenly end up in my bathtub and I would have a finned friend to end up doing crazy shenanigans with.
Spirited Away (2001)
I remember watching this as a kid and being so crept out by all the weird creatures in this movie, but now I watch it and I cannot get enough. Spirited Away is a story about a little girl who finds herself in a new realm where she has to work to set herself free. But the big part of her journey is that she has to deal with all of these creepy characters which turn her time into a peculiarity of epic proportions.
Maleficent (2014)
Starring the wonderful Angelina Jolie, Maleficent takes place in a magical forest and features pixies, tree warriors, water fairies, a forest dragon, and a shape shifting man by her side. This is the ultimate fantasy film that follows a princess with a curse that has to be lifted by true love’s kiss. It may sound clichÊ but this movie is funny, original, and has stunning effects and graphics.
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
This is such an amazing film directed by Tim Burton who is known for creating movies with strange characters and interesting plots. Alice finds her way down a rabbit hole into a land from her childhood adventure, realizing her fate is to defeat the evil Red Queen. Talking animals and a land of endless magic are the reasons why this is high up on my recommended mythical movies list.
The Princess Bride (1987)
The Princess Bride is a classic fairytale movie that you’re sure to love. In the movie we embark on an adventure following a couple batting the evils of a mystical kingdom to find each other after separation. Although not heavy on mythical creatures this movie will definitely leave a mark on you as follow a riveting, action-packed adventure to retain true love.

A mythological creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse. With only few exceptions, the centaurs were lawless, aggressive creatures and were usually drunk.

A legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, that features in the myths of many cultures. They are commonly described as having hard or armoured hide, and are rarely described as flying, despite often being depicted with wings.

A mythological half human–half goat (from the head to the waist being human, but with the addition of goat horns) manifestation of forest and animal spirits that would help or hinder humans at whim.
latin: gryphus
A legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and an eagle’s talons as its front feet. Griffins are known for guarding treasure and priceless possessions.

Disney Diary January 15th - Today we are leaving for Disneyland Paris, yay! Let’s explore this magical world... by Fleur
Day 1 January 16th - The first day at the park; the movie park! We met Mickey and Minnie Mouse, took a ride at the Rock-andRoller coaster and met a giant Buzz Lightyear!
Day 1 January 16th - We also saw some mythical creatures... Ariel the little mermaid and Tinkerbell the fairy!
Day 2 January 17th - Our second and last day at the park, so we decided to spend our day at the big park. It was filled with fun, joy and candy. How enchanting!
Day 2 January 17th - After visiting all the magical worlds and enjoying the rides, it was time for some shopping! And again, we met the little mermaid.
Day 2 January 17th - Eventually, we ended our Disney weekend at the Buzz Lightyear ride, trying to shoot as many aliens as possible!

What you’ll need: -shells -hair clip -glue (glue gun is probably better) -mermaid figurine -background image -small shells/pearls

Step 3: glue the mermaid figurine onto the shells
Step 4: glue the small shells and pearls onto the shells as well. Use as many as you like! You could also Step 1: glue the shells to the hair use glitter or other figurines clip Step 5: let it dry for several hours, Step 2: glue the background image then put in in your hair and feel magical!
