FROM THE DofE

3rd May 2019

Year 12 DofE Ambassadors In February Olivia Back and Sophie Middleton participated in a DofE Ambassador training day in High Wycombe with 40 others from the SE region. They report: “During the day the regional leaders helped us come with an Action Plan to assist Mrs Day and Miss Lunney run and improve the DofE scheme at the College. This included: sessions for the younger pupils to update their eDofE accounts, improve the social media pages for the DofE programme at the College and give advice at meetings about our own experiences. We are looking forward to working more with the Bronze & Silver DofE participants to help prepare them for their expeditions” 

Gold DofE Sixth Formers at the College have the opportunity to participate in the Gold DofE, organising their own expeditions through external providers with the knowledgeable guidance of Mrs Day. During the Easter holidays 3 students headed off to “wild country” for their first taste of serious walking and camping! Olivia Back and Sophie Middleton report on their expedition: On the 15th April we got on the train and travelled up to the Peak District for the start of our open Gold practice. It was very easy to organise our practice and qualifying expeditions through Adventure Expeditions as there were loads of dates available. It was 6 days long, including 2 days of training and the 4 days and 3 nights expedition. On the training days we got to know the rest of our group, made route cards, learned how to take a bearing and refreshed our navigation skills. Throughout the four day expedition we walked 108km, over mountains, through streams and past reservoirs, always surrounded by the beautiful scenery. It was very challenging, both physically and mentally, and filled with blisters. However, the experience and meeting new people made it worth it and so we would highly recommend it to anybody. Wish us luck for the qualifying on the 30th July!

FROM THE CURRICULUM

DIXIT 3rd May 2019

Junior Maths Challenge happened on Tuesday 40 pupils from Years 7 and 8 were entered into the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge this week. This is a national competition that is entered by over 300,000 pupils each year with certificates issued for those who perform particularly well. The questions are all multiple choice but are designed to test the problem solving skills of the pupils. Why not try a couple of questions from previous years for yourself. No calculators!

Feel free to send me your solutions through email or twitter (@HolyportMaths) Many thanks to Mrs. Ellis for organising this again. We look forward to receiving the results in a few weeks time.

Berlin Trip 2019 The History department organised a fantastic trip to Berlin during the Easter holidays which gave GCSE Historians the opportunity to build their knowledge of the rise of Hitler and life in Germany before World War 2 and during the Cold War. A full write up will follow next week but in the meantime some pictures can be found on twitter @HolyportHum or through searching the twitter hashtag #HolyportBerlin2019 ďƒ¨

FROM THE SIXTH FORM

Lower 6th Students Stay up all night to observe Local Election Count Whilst most people were in bed last night, Politics Students Archie Powell-Harper and Ed Sadler along with Mr Hardee were at Abingdon Leisure Centre in the Vale of White Horse District with the local Liberal Democrats observing the local Election count. In a seismic result the Liberal Democrats gained 31 seats to the Conservatives 6 – in a complete reversal of the result from 4 years ago. Ed and Archie helped to watch the count and make sure that it was being done in an above board manner. They also got to meet and talk to rising Liberal Democrat star and MP Layla Moran who has offered them both work experience. Ed commented – “Whilst I am tired today, this will be an experience that we will never forget and I feel that I have been part of something historic”. Archie said – “I am definitely going to take Layla Moran up on her offer of work experience – not only will it be interesting and enjoyable but will look good on my Oxford PPE application form!”

Law Society Alexander Cameron QC. The tense relationship between 21st Century media and the Criminal Justice System. Holyport Students were treated to a lecture by a prominent figure in the world of criminal justice on Wednesday evening. Alexander Cameron QC touched on the issues between 21st Century media and the Criminal Justice System. Cameron started the talk with the new law about how victims of crime must allow the police to access victim’s mobile devices and social media accounts as evidence and to obtain evidence.

This posed the issue that people might be accused of other crimes which they did not intend for the police to find out about, thereby making victims more reluctant to report crimes. The second topic he discussed was about the use cameras and broadcasting in court cases which to Alexander Cameron gave the public a totally different view of the case as they weren't exposed to all the evidence presented in court. Ironically, this law was lifted and reintroduced recently in the UK and the first screening being of a case Cameron was in charge of defending, which he felt had more to do with who he was than what the case was about. The evening was an interesting one which ended with a joke about Brexit which was very much the topic of conversation for his brother, David Cameron when he set the Referendum. Rollo Buss

Volunteers needed for a rowing regatta - last call! The Ball Cup South regatta organising committee have asked the College if there would be anystudents interested in helping them on Sunday May 12th at Dorney Lake. This rowing regatta is a really friendly event held for small schools and junior boatclubs, with various other activities happening around the lake. The committee are looking for students to help with manning the stake boat pontoons at the start - no experience or knowledge of rowing is necessary, although it is a great opportunity to learn more about rowing. The College will be taking a minibus of boarders to the event, so transport can be provided. Any interested students need to email/speak to Miss Lunney asap! Next Sunday 12th May 2019 Holyport College will play host to Thames Velo cycling club who are using the College as the base for their annual cycling road race. There are two races taking place and the riders will assemble at the College to prepare and warm up for the race before rolling out onto the road to start the race proper at the bottom of Hawthorn Hill. Both races will have eighty riders racing as well as motorcycle outriders and a race convoy of cars. The afternoon race is the main race and will feature elite teams with their support cars and the odd professional cyclist. ďƒŞ
