The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family

Visiting speaker, Connor Woodman, delivers tour de force on global issues It was standing room only for the visit of Connor Woodman on Thursday evening in the Dudley Room. Connor is a researcher at the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies which is an independent educational charity that advances public understanding of crime, criminal justice and social harm. The audience were treated to a fervent display of fluent rhetoric on a range of issues relating to social justice globally and closer to home. These stretched from the inequities in global capitalism to the nature of policing in the UK and the 'Rhodes Must Fall' campaign. It was another stimulating and thought-provoking evening which was aided by our excellent student interviewers, Romina Findel-Hawkins and Louis Gregory. Next week's guest is Alejandro Gonzalez, a journalist at the Financial Times. The college entertains visiting speakers every Thursday evening at 6.45pm in the Dudley Room. All students, teachers and parents are very welcome!

FROM THE GEOGRAPHY DEPT

DIXIT 5th October 2018

Geographers attend a lecture at Royal Holloway A number of Sixth Form Geographers had the opportunity to attend an evening lecture at Royal Holloway, University of London, on Monday. Professor Simon Blockley discussed the variety of hazards resulting from volcanic activity, looking at how these varied across the world in terms of the intensity of their impacts. Professor Blockley furnished his talk with a variety of gory details about the more intriguing impacts of the various gases emitted by volcanoes! Being both a volcanologist and a climate scientist he also explained the numerous long term impacts that volcanic activity can have on both local and global climates. He concluded by informing us that in 50 years we will have another mini ice age, similar to that which used to see the Thames in London freezing over annually in the 16th century! @Holyport_Hums

FROM THE SCIENCE DEPT

Year 7 Science Trip to Whipsnade Zoo

On Thursday 27th September, 44 excited Year 7s, Mrs Belbin, Mr Agyeman, Mr Parsons, Mrs Weller, Mrs Quail and Dr Green set off for a the day at Whipsnade Zoo, near Dunstable. We couldn’t have hoped for a sunnier day!

We got to see penguins, rhinoceroses, giraffes, chimpanzees, elephants, tiger cubs, lemurs, an awesome falconry display, and loads more. One of the highlights of the day was sitting eating our lunch while the different birds of prey came swooping in between and over our heads! 44 very tired Year 7s arrived back at school at the end of the day, having made new friends and taking with them loads of unforgettable memories. If you’d like to see more photos of the day, ask a Year 7 friend to show you the pictures shared with them on Google Drive.

FROM THE FRIENDS

DIXIT 5th October 2018

Can you help our efforts? Dear Parents and Carers Can you help our efforts? As you may have already seen the Dads’ Club is once again putting on an incredible seven course gourmet dinner, cooked by amateur but keen chefs and delivered by a combination of parents and staff acting as waiters. This year it takes place on Saturday 17th November. The evening raises an incredible amount of money, largely due to the auction and the raffle. This is where we need your help!

We know we have a fabulous parent community that has all sorts of connections. Do you know somebody that can offer something that would be of value to somebody else? It could be a skill or a service, or something tangible. We are looking for 20 raffle prizes with a value of around £50 and half a dozen auction items. Previous examples include: 

Loan of a boat moored on the Thames

Weekend away in a holiday cottage

Tickets to events (theatre, music, sports etc)

Round of golf on a prestigious course

Sports equipment

Health/beauty treatment

Watches and jewellery

Meals at restaurants

Autographed memorabilia

Experience vouchers

If you, your company or somebody you know could offer any items or services you think might be suitable, please contact Martin Duggan (mduggan@fia.uk.com) He'd love to hear from you! Many thanks Graham Shakespeare Holyport Dads' Club 6
