Success for In Angelis! On Sunday, Year 9 vocal ensemble In Angelis competed in the LVS Ascot Music Festival, an open opportunity for musicians aged 18 and under in the area to compete and receive professional advice and critique from an external adjudicator. Our girls met adjudicator Simon Rushby, an ex school Director of Music who is an international ABRSM examiner, writer for Edexcel and wellknown adjudicator both in the UK and abroad. Mr Rushby complimented the girls on their ‘beautifully cultured sound’ and ‘sincere and expressive singing’. The girls were awarded a Gold medal and an ‘Outstanding’ grade, which is rarely awarded at music festivals. In addition, they have been invited back to the Prize Winner’s Concert on 1st March. They will perform to a packed theatre amongst the best U18 musicians in the area in this concert and are now eligible for an overall festival award. A massive CONGRATULATIONS to Arte Sershi, Cate Cowper, Maisie Russell, Martha Pearce, Deborah Oyewole and Maite Alvargonzalez. We are all so very proud of you! Best of luck competing in the final concert!

FROM THE SIXTH FORM

DIXIT 8th February 2019

Holyport Lectures Julia Pearce 30th January

The world of high finance always seems to draw a crowd at Holyport College, and Ms. Pearce provided a detailed account of a long and accomplished career both internationally and within the City of London. As a lawyer in finance, she recounted some of her first hand investigations into potentially criminal activities, and another occasion where investment decisions by her superiors were motivated more by revenue from transaction fees than long term stability of given companies. She also spoke of the challenges of being a woman in a male dominated industry and how the work life balance with her family has been difficult at times, such as being on holidays with her family and having business calls demand her attention. Jane Lunnon 6th February Can you be a Feminist and Watch Love Island? Holyport College welcomed Jane Lunnon, The Head of Wimbledon High School for Girls who made the National Headlines last year by slating Love Island and saying that it was incompatible to be a feminist and watch the show. She gave an insightful presentation about the state of Feminism in 2019 and then the floor was opened up for questions. Many A Level Politics students were among the audience and this provided a lively debate. House Masters have also reported the debate continued back in the boarding houses well into the evening – which is a testament to how well the talk went down. James Erridge and Samiya Usmani chaired the session. Next week: Wednesday February 13th: Jamie Cameron. Research Assistant, Oxford Internet Institute. What challenges and opportunities are thrown up by the internet? We’ll be discussing social media, online dating, artificial intelligence and more...

FROM THE SIXTH FORM

U6 Boarders Enter a Pub Quiz! New staff member Mr Hardee runs a weekly pub quiz at his local family friendly pub in Headington, Oxford and so Mr Alford decided to take 16 U6 boarders to compete as three teams. Rounds in the quiz included General Knowledge, Current Affairs, a Name the Cheese picture round amongst others. Although none of the students won the grand prize, one team, headed by Tobani and Greg, won the Bonus Prize of a Teddy! Mr Alford, joined another team which ultimately won the Grand Prize. It’s events like these that we at Holyport run for sixth form students that allow an introduction to university style social life but in a managed and sensible environment. We look forward to running this event again.

FROM THE BOARDING HOUSES

DIXIT 8th February 2019

39 Boarders were fortunate enough to head to The Albert Hall to see Cirque Du Soleil Totem last Sunday. We mooched around Kensington and Harrods beforehand, admired The Albert Memorial as it glistened in the sunshine before we settled in to see people contort, fly, leap and twist across the stage. It was an amazing experience, thank you so much to boarding parents who facilitated this experience for their children. It was a complete treat!

A massive shout out to Fabulous Fawcettian Azeezah in Year 11. She has led every House Assembly this week educating the whole school on the importance of Black History. Azeezah has shown herself to be a self-motivated, determined and focused young lady and we are very proud of everything she brings to our community. Well done Azeezah!
