World Book Day Mr Graham encouraged staff to dress up for the 22nd annual World Book Day yesterday! World Book Day is a registered charity on a mission to give every child and young person a book of their own. It’s also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. Students started the day with a World Book Day quiz. As you can see, staff joined in with enthusiasm!

FROM THE BOARDING HOUSES
DIXIT 8th March 2019
Milton Fawcett weekly meeting Every Monday we have introduced a whole house meeting. All students attend to hear each other’s successes. It’s still in its infant stages but the first two meetings have been lovely - the staff really enjoy seeing all the girls in one place. The premise of the meeting is to share the week’s celebrations, award a Boarder of the Week and a Sixth Former will lead our “inspirational woman of the week”. Boarder of the Week will be based on the girls’ input to house, the school and the community - we want to recognise when the girls are making the most of all the opportunities Holyport has to offer.
Celebrations from the house. Thandi tamed a goat! The girls enjoyed Animal Rangers in Holyport at the weekend. Despite Thandi’s initial hesitations she was won round by “taming a goat”… We also celebrated sporting and music celebrations but do not want to repeat information from other pages in Dixit!
Boarder of the Week Can you believe in our second ever meeting we forgot to award Boarder of the Week!? Shame on the staff!! We will therefore announce two next week. The Boarder of the Week gets to choose a little gift from our boarding basket of joy. Hints for this week’s boarder of the week… She’s a real team player She throws herself into lots of school events She featured heavily in the top 10s last term She has shown herself to be kind and keen to help a new student in her year transition into boarding. Do you recognise your girl? All will be revealed in next week’s Dixit!
Inspiration of the week Dr Maya Angelou - she has been selected by Sami in Year 13. Sami chose her as Angelou was an incredible poet and black activist who shows that hard work and perseverance pays off so we should always persevere to achieve our goals.

FROM THE BOARDING HOUSES
Last night, Year 7 had a lovely session of 5-aside football. It was a very close match but in the last minute Harry’s team scored a goal meaning they beat the other team 11-10. Well done boys.
On Wednesday we took some boarders to the Royal Festival Hall in London to see Bear Grylls interview Sir Ranulph Fiennes. A night of inspirational anecdotes of his polar adventures.
The Friday morning running club were out as usual this morning!

FROM THE HOUSES
Brunel win Holyport's first Inter-House Pancake Event! Mr Hardee brought a tradition from Oriel College, Oxford University to Holyport College this week by setting up the first ever Inter-House Pancake race. Essentially a relay race around the Quad with a flip at every corner, run by five members of each House with the Year 13s finishing off the final leg. It was a hotly contested race that after about lap 3 came down to a Brunel vs Hershel duel. The dramatic final lap saw Oscar Newman (Hershel) leading Tobani Olabowale (Brunel) only for Oscar to slip and lose his pancake out of the pan meaning that Tobani brought home the win for Brunel. Thanks to everyone for helping out - it was Flippin' Good Fun!
Next Friday is Red Nose day and Brunel House are running the fundraising; two years ago (with only 380 students) we raised nearly £1,000, we are hoping to exceed this amount this year. Events are:
Brunel students taking House assemblies next week Year 7-8 selling red noses next week - £1.25 each Jack Fulford having his top-knot removed (he is being sponsored separately for this) at a.m. assembly Cake sale run by Year 9 at break time Mufti day - with a red or blue (Brunel!) theme Staff v student contest at lunchtime

Music Department news Best Vocal Ensemble Overall Trophy
Last Friday Year 9 vocal sextet In Angelis performed at the Gold Medal Winners ‘Final of Finals’ Concert for the LVS Ascot Music Festival and the adjudicator awarded them the Best Vocal Ensemble Trophy for the entire festival! He complimented the girls on their ‘impeccable tuning’, ‘superb blend’ and ‘beautiful expression’! It was a trophy extremely well deserved and we are very proud of them! English National Opera @ Coliseum trip Tuesday 12 March Just a courtesy reminder to students and parents that this trip is on Tuesday. Please bring ‘smart-casual’ clothes (no pale blue denim, ripped jeans, trainers or ‘Converse’ style shoes please) to change into at lunchtime, spending money (we will have a little free time at Covent Garden!) and a mobile phone. Meet in the Music room at 2:45pm please ready to leave. There are still 2 places left if anyone would like to join us at a cost of £16.50 / £19 (travel cost only as we have been given free tickets). Anyone (student or parent) is welcome to join us - don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to see one of Mozart’s brilliant operas in a world-class venue! We can only continue to run trips if we meet our costs and we need to sell the last two tickets to break even on the cost of hiring the coach. Please support your Music Department! Thank you.
Spring Concert 26th March - Tickets now on sale!
Music Department Advance Dates for your Diary:
Our box office is now live for this amazing annual showcase on Tuesday 26 March at 7pm in the Sports Hall of our wonderful students brilliant musicianship and progress. We have been careful to ensure that it will not be the three hour marathon that last year ended up being as the ensembles have been limited to the number of pieces they are performing and some students have opted to perform at the informal concert next term instead to allow for more preparation time. The Friends of Holyport will be kindly running the bar and raffle for us and Splaat Media will be present all day taking professional photos and selling them to parents in the evening. All the students are putting a great deal of effort into their rehearsals so it promises to be a wonderful occasion. FROM THE COLLEGE
DIXIT 8th March 2019
From the English and Drama Department Year 7 have been exploring some of the characters from the Italian style of theatre Commedia dell’Arte. This is a highly physical style of theatre that requires the students to consider the status of the character and interpret this through their physicality. Here is one class demonstrating what they have learnt this week whilst creating a contemporary version of slapstick comedy.
From the MFL Department: A huge congratulations to Giulia Moretti and Jemima Jones (Year 12) who participated in the UK Linguistics Olympiad competition. It was an extremely difficult exam where students had to solve linguistic data problems in a range of languages. Both girls sat the Advanced Level exam and Giulia achieved the Silver Award! Well done to you both!
Year 11 Maths: In Maths this week, some Year 11 students were designing their own exam questions and teaching them to the class. They had a lot of fun teaching! Well done to Will Spires, Tabitha Clark and Craig Schloss.
Seven students went to Eton on Tuesday night to attend a Psychology talk. It was a round table discussion with the speakers sitting in close proximity to the students. It was a casual talk with the students asking many questions and the speakers freely answering them. It was not a formal talk, which made it much more interesting to follow and engage with the speakers. There were three speakers who spoke about coaching and leadership, they were Sandy Loder, Chris Berthoud & Ed Haddon. They were introduced by Simon Kelton. They all spoke about their personal experiences with Psychology and what paths they took after leaving Eton College. Sandy Loder spoke about joining the Army after leaving Eton, which helped him to get into the correct mindset with Psychology and how it has now led him to coaching many people and taking them across the world for expeditions to help build a positive mindset.
Psychology is the scientific study of brain, mind and behaviour and is hugely popular at university. In 2017 there were 115,000 applications through UCAS. It can lead to a number of well-defined career paths within Psychology including the health professions, human resources, marketing & communications and there is growing interest in sports and forensic psychology. Recent (2017) research showed that nearly 60% of all graduates were employed six months after graduation, higher than the rate for all Science degrees!

FROM THE CCF CCF camp
Three Holyport students were taken to Bramley training area for a camp on Sunday 3rd to Monday 4th March. For this camp we used paint ball guns with compressed air to simulate blank firing, all cadets slept in bivvie bags and cooked ration packs to keep them warm. 49 D and C Company members attended this weekend along with 6 B Company members who were based elsewhere on site. D Company - (Eton Year 11) learnt a variety of army lessons, patrolled and also planned snap ambushes on buildings. C Company- (Eton Year 12) taught lessons and were assessed by the officers and adult volunteers. They led the D company members on their section attacks. B Company- (Eton Year 13) The 6 B blockers caught and skinned squirrels for food and lived in the wilderness for 2 nights.
