The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family
Year 9 and 10 visit to the Science museum On Wednesday, 29 Year 9s and nine Year 10s spent the day at the Science Museum. We started off the day in a 3D flight simulator, where we experienced what it would be like to go up on an acrobatic display flight, viewed from the cockpit of one of the Red Arrows (Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team) aircraft. The chairs moved in time with the simulation, so it really felt like we were there!
We got to find out about a whole lot of really cool Scientific discoveries, and saw actual vehicles used in space exploration. Everytime we thought we’d seen all there was to see, we found out about new galleries that students had discovered, with even more interesting gadgets and ideas. We learnt about antibiotics and aeronautics, and right the way through the alphabet to the V2 engine, X-rays, Yuri Gagarin and Zhiram Maxim (great engineering pioneers of the last 200 years).
The IMAX show, A Beautiful Planet in 3D, gave us an insight into the fascinating world of life on the International Space Station, as well as showing us some of the great images the scientists working up there get to see every day.

Here are some quotes from students, about what they enjoyed the most about their day out (you may spot a theme …):
‘For me, the best part was the gallery of aeronautical engineering’ ‘My favourite part was the molecular structures area in the materials gallery’ ‘I loved the IMAX cinema - it was really inspiring’ ‘My favourite thing was the IMAX cinema! Learning about how there may be other life forms’ ‘The best part was the plane area’ ‘I think the best bit about today was the IMAX movie, because I got to see what Earth looks like from space’ ‘The IMAX was engaging and taught me a lot about Earth and space.’ ‘The space section of the museum was really interesting and fun’ ‘The Red Arrows flight simulator ’ ‘My favourite part was the IMAX and Engineer Your Future, because they were fun and educational’ ‘I think that the best part of the trip was the flight simulator and the IMAX because they were super cool and informative. I can’t wait to go again’ ‘The IMAX was inspirational and amazing’ ‘I liked the whole trip very much, but I think that I enjoyed the Red Arrows virtual reality simulator the most of all!’ ‘The best part of the trip was the flying with the Red Arrows experience and the IMAX experience. Both were in 3D making it seem very realistic, and the Red Arrows experience used shaking and moving seats, only adding to the whole overall realistic feel of the experience.’
We had a great day. Thank you to Mr Agyeman, Mrs Smith, Mrs Boyden and Mrs Hafeez for coming along and making the day the fun, successful day that it was. Several students have written their thanks to all involved for making the day happen and encouraging them to embrace the day as the mature, independent-thinking, engaged students that they are. Year 8s, watch this space in the new year, when we’re planning your trip the the Natural History Museum! Mrs Belbin

Sonia's Lessons for Life Sonia Sharma, PMO Manager from Channel 4 was last night's visiting speaker before a Dudley Room packed with over 60 students! She brought a strong message of encouraging girls to have the confidence to follow a career in tech and also engaged our students in a thoughtful discourse around issues of gender and diversity in the workplace. She concluded with her three 'Lessons for Life' which involved being a life-long learner, loving what you do and prioritising the 'little things' which can help you achieve a bigger goal. It was an inspiring message from a warm and charismatic guest and one that left our students buzzing about afterwards!
Next week's guest is Councillor Simon Dudley, Leader of RBWM and Chair of Governors of Holyport College.

FROM THE SIXTH FORM
9th November 2018
Sixth Form trips This week a group of Sixth Form Chemistry and Biology students visited Syngenta, a local agrochemical company. The students were given a tour of the Biological and Chemical Sciences departments and were able to see first hand how agrochemicals are designed, synthesised and tested. Most impressive is the use of robotics to speed up routine testing and how complex all the processes are. It was helpful to meet some of the scientists and to see the sort of jobs available to science graduates in this sector. It was a very interesting morning and thanks go to the Syngenta staff and to Mr Parsons for driving us. We were a bit late getting back and it was touch and go if we would make lunch - much relief when we did! Mrs Dawson

A group of Upper Sixth Geographers were invited by the Geography department at Eton to visit College Library to see an exhibition of historic maps. College library is an incredibly special area of Eton because it houses materials dating back to the 11th century. The materials in the library are so rare and precious that you cannot photograph them, students are not allowed to touch the pages of the books and can only use pencil to write notes to prevent ink damage. The Head of Geography, Dr Anderson, kindly guided the students around the exhibition. @HPCSixth

Following this, at 11am, the whole College community gathered in the Quad for a two minute silence.
