Year 9 Bronze DofE
55 Year 9 students took part in their first Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition last weekend completing the practice for their Bronze Award. The expedition requires them to be self sufficient for 2 days, carrying all their clothes, food, cooking equipment and tents. Judging by the singing on the coach on the way to the start point the students weren’t at all phased by the challenges they were about to face! With many of the students having never walked 15km with a large backpack there were many tired bodies on Saturday evening, they seemed to re-energise though after they’d set up camp and cooked their dinner! Sunday morning dawned very early, with many of the campers keen to get up to eat their pancakes, make hot chocolate and sing before 5am!! By the time they reached the finish point on Sunday much of this energy had thankfully been used so that even the ice lollies the staff gave them didn’t prevent the majority of them falling asleep on the coach on the way home! To see more photos from the weekend check out @HolyportHum Thank you to Mrs Belbin, Mrs Day, Miss Howard and Miss Lunney for giving up their weekends to enable the students to complete their expedition and camp.

News from Sport Isabella Jones in Year 7 has been playing football for only around 3 years now, and has come a long way in that time. She is one of the strongest players in her teams and plays with pure passion. This weekend Isabella picked up the supporters player of the season from both her girls team and mixed team, she also received the trophy for the top goal scorer in the mixed team. She has had a fantastic season and we hope she continues to develop her skills and continues to enjoy the game!

Huge congratulations to Miss Loudoun and Miss Shears on the fantastic GCSE and A Level Art exhibition last night. Some really excellent work on display. Thank you for all your hard work! Year 9 Bronze DofE Baking Club Well done to Simon, Molly, Semyon and Zara (absent this week) for completing the skills component of their Bronze DofE award, and to Leo, who completed the mentor/volunteering component of his award too this week. They have learnt a new baking skill every week for the past 4 months. This week, they learned to make bread dough, which they used to make delicious pizzas. Thank you to our Sodexo chefs, who kindly baked them for us in their industrial ovens, and packaged them up like proper take-away pizzas.
Watch this space next year, when the next cohort begin their baking journey. Mrs Belbin 5

Last Wednesday, a few Year 9 girls were hosted by Eton to debate topics that were relevant in today's world and relating to the environment. There were 2 debates - “This house believes Brexit is good for the environment” and "This house believes that poachers should be shot on sight". Our girls were split up with Eton boys on both sides of the debates and came up with some fantastic arguments. Overall it was an informative and wellstructured debate. Our girls spoke extremely well and can be very proud of their efforts. Thank you to the students at Eton for organising it and to their teachers for facilitating this.

From Dr Green: I am doing a series of long endurance swims to raise funds for The Sebastians Action Trust, a charity that support very sick children and their families. They are a small local Charity who I have supported before. It all started last weekend with the Jubilee 10km River Swim which I completed in a respectable sub 3 hours. The next challenge is a 6 hour endurance swim where I hope to swim over 15km. After this I have many other events and challenges planned, the big ones include a Henley to Marlow 14km swim, The Length of Windemere, and The Dart Double Dip! I would be very grateful for any support and donations for this most deserving Charity. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/nathan-green9 https://www.sebastiansactiontrust.org/
ďƒ§ Introducing Annette I'm Annette Taylor and I'm now working with Dr Green and the LSAs in the SEND department. I have worked previously for 9 years as an LSA in another local secondary school, working with many pupils with a wide range of needs. As the SEND Assistant I am the point of contact for any SEND queries and I am really looking forward to continuing my journey with Holyport College and getting to know all the staff and students. a.taylor@holyportcollege.org.uk 8
