The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family

Welcome back from the Acting Head Master It has been an absolute joy to welcome the College community back for the start of the new academic year. We welcome many new staff and students to the College this term and it is a pleasure to see how many of them are already beginning to find their feet within our community. For the first time, the College is now full and it has been an honour to therefore appoint the first College prefects led by Head Boy Greg Simond and Head Girl Francesca Mobley. I know that you will join me in wishing them well in their new roles. This morning, I spoke to the whole College community about the importance of embracing the opportunities on offer at the College and it has been pleasing to see so many varied activities already taking place with over 150 co-curriculum activities within our programme, rehearsals underway for Thoroughly Modern Millie, choirs rehearsing, Upper Sixth students attending the Law Society trip, courses for boarders in yoga, capoeira, football and polo, scholars lectures underway and so much more besides. Next week will be the first opportunity for senior students to attend societies at Eton College and I do strongly recommend that many of you sieze this opportunity. I would also like to take this opportunity to let our parents and carers know a little more about what they can expect from the College this year (alongside all that you have come to expect from us in previous years):

WELCOME BACK

    

DIXIT 14th September 2018

A strong focus on students’ personal development around the 7Cs: Confidence, Curiosity, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, Commitment and Craftsmanship A significantly improved Careers education provision (read more about this here) An improved programme of activities and opportunities for boarders A focus on listening to and responding to the voices of our students Improved communication including through the publication of Opus and the launch of our new website later in the year A continued focus on improving the quality of the food under the leadership of our new Bursar, Michelle Stokes and our new, full time, onsite Sodexo account manager.

It has also been a boost for us all to have Mr Boyle back with us as he begins a phased return to work. His presence, leadership and good humour have been missed by everyone so to see him recovering so well is heartening to all.

Finally, on behalf of myself and my family, I would like to extend our gratitude for all of the messages of support and congratulations following the birth of our son, Felix, in August (and indeed, for all of the support we received from the College community over the eighteen months before). He is very much enjoying getting to know everyone on his tours around the College!

FROM THE SIXTH FORM

DIXIT 14th September 2018

Upper Sixth 3VB Law day On Thursday 13th September five Upper Sixth students were given the exciting opportunity to visit the Inns of Court and the Inns of Chancery in London for an event held by the legal practice 3VB , one of the leading barristers chambers in the UK. The programme firstly gave an ‘Introduction to the Bar’ led by Matthew Hardwick QC where nine leading barristers gave speeches on their experiences in the profession as well as providing information as to how to become a Barrister. Afterward each school present was given a Barrister to work with in preparation for a ‘mini-moot’, where everyone was given a mock case file to argue the case in a mock trial. The Holyport team worked with Hannah Glover to represent Long Sutton Golf Club in the given case of Porcine v Long Sutton Golf Club, whereby Mr Porcine was arguing for a golf tournament not to go ahead as the proximity of the 5th hole to his villa meant that he, his house and his cat were in danger of being hit by golf balls.

After being given time to discuss the case and determine how to prevent the injunction being made, the team put forward Issy Mayhead and Danielle Hawkins as advocates. The trial was judged by top Judge Andrew Onslow QC and representing the Golf Club, Issy and Danielle presented their points to ‘the court’ and the decision was made by the Judge that the injunction should not be made, winning the trial for the Golf Club and the Holyport team. After a three course lunch in Gray’s Inn Matthew Hardwick QC took the Holyport students on a tour of the Inns, the Royal Courts of Justice and the Criminal courts where the group was able to witness a live trial in which the judge was finding a man to be guilty of lying under oath. Overall this was an amazing experience which the students benefited from immensely, being given such high quality insight into the profession and hopefully can be shared with many more students in the future. Send My Friend to School campaign

At the end of the summer term students in Years 7, 8 and 9 took part in the annual Send My Friend to School campaign. As part of this some students wrote letters to our local MP, Theresa May, to ask her to continue to work with world leaders to ensure that all students around the world have access to a safe and quality education. This week each student received a personal reply from Mrs May. ďƒ¨ @Holyport_Hums

FROM THE SIXTH FORM Lest We Forget

Next Wednesday afternoon at Holyport College, there will be important historical research project lead by Oxford University taking place, all the while offering a fun and engaging experience for those attending. It is for anyone with family members who have fought in or were affected by WW1, and is a nationwide initiative called ‘Lest We Forget’, which will be at the College on September 19 from 2-5pm. They would love to see anyone with family stories, photos and memorabilia of World War 1. The aim is to record stories and memories from WW1 which survive - not in museum collections or history books but in the hearts and homes of the very many families and individuals affected, before they are lost to history, and to document (by photography and digital scanning) the artefacts kept in people's homes. This is not just the story of the people involved at the time, but of how their experiences and the war itself, affected the rest of the family.

Members of the public are invited to come and have their memories/objects recorded – a kind of history Antiques RoadShow. They will be offered a cup of tea and refreshments, interviewed, and any objects or memorabilia photographed and digitally scanned. There will also be a historian, Stephen Barker, on hand to answer any questions and Frontline Living History. As part of the Centenary commemoration of the end of World War One, this vast archive will go live online across Europe in November 2018, and will be publically available. This important social history project is supported by the Commonwealth War Graves and the Heritage Lottery Fund. There will be parking available at the College. Please do publicise this event to your friends and families.

FROM THE SPORTS FIELD

Last weekend showed to be a great start to Saturday fixtures for Year 7 & 8 rugby and hockey teams. The participation levels were excellent and the sports department are looking forward to the year ahead! Fixtures pro haven't placed the current Holyport pupils onto their student list yet, therefore the website and app isn’t working at the moment. They hope to be up by the end of the weekend. Sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, this weekend Park House have cancelled three rugby teams the year 7, 10 and 8's due to their staff and pupil illness, therefore only year 9 will play this weekend.

Squad lists for girls hockey this weekend (15th September) have been placed around school and can be found inside the canteen and in the boarding house common room for boarders.
