The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family

Bronze DofE Training Day On Monday the sixty Year 9’s who have signed up to take part in DofE had a training day led by the instructors from BXM Expeditions. During the day they worked with their groups learning about expedition safety and first aid, how to cook using camping equipment (and what they should be cooking), how to use a map for navigating and how to pack their rucksacks. The groups also had to work together to plan their two day assessed expedition which will take place in late June. It was a very successful day with all the instructors being impressed by the many interesting questions the students asked. (Before the Easter holidays Bronze participants will be sent a kit list detailing the equipment that they will need).

FROM THIS WEEK’S TRIPS

DIXIT 15th March 2019

Eton Bioreach Year 7 got their first taste of the brand new Eton science labs and a chance to learn about genetics from Year 11s at Eton. They played their favourite game, Articulate, this time with words they learnt about DNA and inheritance. The winning team was duly rewarded with sweets, which is always a popular part of the lesson. They learnt how and why their hair colour was different, why some could roll their tongues and others couldn’t no matter how hard they tried! The Year 7s will return to Eton next week for another Biology lesson and make use of the knowledge of the Eton boys. 

Junior School Challenge  On Tuesday 2 teams of 4 from year 8 competed at the Junior School Challenge hosted by MCS in Oxford. Both teams were extremely resilient and were extremely hard working during the challenges even though we did not win our rounds, a huge shout-out to the members from both teams for participating with such an excellent attitude and their outstanding knowledge. We have already started preparing for next years challenge!

FROM THE COLLEGE

15th March 2019

Year 9 Boarders DofE Baking Club This week, we baked lovely brightly coloured cupcakes for the Red Nose Day cake sale on Friday. ďƒ¨

Religion lectures We had a double billing of men of religion over the past fortnight for our weekly Wednesday evening lectures. On the 6th March we had Wayne Dixon, a frequent contributor to assemblies around Berkshire. This week we had Manvir Singh, a Sikh minister who works in the prison system. Both speakers discussed their experiences of their religion and recounted their paths to working closely with their respective houses of worship. Mr Singh gave a humorous summary of the 5 K’s, the articles of faith he wears everyday as part of his commitment to Sikhism. His message of love and respect for all people and all faiths was an extremely positive message for our students. He recounted experiences with racism and assumed racism, when one women wanted to sit elsewhere on a plane, in case the smell of spilt alcohol would offend the holy man on the flight. Mr Dixon spoke with infectious joy about spreading the word across schools to young people and the battle to attract school aged pupils back into the church through music and sport. He spoke at length about the worldwide band LZ7, who have played across schools locally to rave reviews. We shift next week to the very newsworthy world of politics with Windsor MP, Adam Afriyie booked to speak.

FROM MILTON FAWCETT

DIXIT 15th March 2019

We’ve had a lovely week in house. Year 8s went out for a meal in Windsor which was enjoyed by all. We have been really proud of some of our senior girls this week with all the mentoring and “big sister” roles they have been taking on for the younger students. As we approach Exeat we are looking at MF house and feeling really happy with every single girl - what a privileged position we are in to be able to say that. Celebrations from the house.        

Martha received a Holyportian for great Latin work Chantelle has been asked to join Anima Choir which is superb. Fabs, Kitty and Sera showed superb leadership and care in helping with a Year 8 social situation. Everyone won at netball this weekend! Arte being a great sport playing for other team at netball Friday Fives club really great turnout - we’d love more girls to go along. Hockey festival plate runners up Tilly, Paige, Dara and Rachel Bella G and other senior girls beat senior boys at football - they won 5-4!

Boarders of the week We have two this week due to staff incompetency last week!

Last week’s - Rachel. She is a superb young lady, she’s fun, kind and interesting. She’s a hard worker with academic credentials to prove it. She is a “go to” for staff if something needs doing in school. She’s embraced boarding and everything the school offers with such ease. A total super star! This week’s - Fabienne. Her personality and positivity is infectious in house. She is always entertaining staff and students and thrives off helping others. She mentors younger girls, helps at bedtime and is always keen to be part of everything boarding is. She’s the epitome of everything boarding creates. Well done, and ultimately thank you ladies - it’s a treat to have you in house. 

Inspiration of the week Billy Jean King -presented by Chloe Adelaja Billie Jean King is a former professional tennis player who is a pioneer for gender equality and social justice. King wants us to remember that: “Whatever you care about, you can make a difference. You really can. Don’t ever underestimate yourself. Do not underestimate the human spirit.”

FROM THE MUSIC ROOMS

15th March 2019

Music Department News Holyport Goes to the Opera...Again! On Tuesday, 30 of us went to see the final dress rehearsal of Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ by Mozart, produced by the English National Opera at the beautiful Coliseum. ENO Baylis, the education department of the English National Opera, were kind enough to give us free tickets in the balcony. We joined several London schools and the rest of the theatre was full of sponsors and people who had been invited. This was a very modern setting of this magical tale and the entire interpretation, from the set, production design, staging, direction and performances were all simply amazing. Our students were blown away by it and even the most cynical admitted afterwards that it had been fabulous! The students were a joy as ever to escort out for the evening and my thanks to Miss Treacy for helping to staff the trip.

Spring Concert 26 March 2019 More than 70 students from the 9 ensembles and various soloists will be performing in our annual showcase on the 26 March. Tickets can be purchased here, https:// www.ticketsource.co.uk/holyport-college-music so please do come and support your Music department! The students really do appreciate your support and deserve to have the chance to perform in front of a large audience. We hire in a stage and additional lighting to make this a really special event. All are welcome - so please do bring along friends and family. The Friends of Holyport College are very kindly running a bar for us and Splaat Media will be present so you can buy professional photos of the students in action.

Orchestra Pizza Rehearsal Evening 19 March We need to have a longer rehearsal with the members of Orchestra and Chamber Ensemble on Tuesday 19 March from 6pm - 8:30pm. Students should go to early tea at 5:40pm and this will also be provided for day students. We will have pizza delivered too towards the end of the rehearsal. This is the only chance we have to try and get everyone together for longer than 30 minutes to do some detailed refining and polishing, so we do ask that parents and students please regard this as top priority - it will be a one-off, for the concert a week later. Thank you in advance for your support. @HolyportMusic

FROM THE POLO FIELD

DIXIT 15th March 2019

Polo success for Charlie My name is Charlie and I have been playing polo for just over a year now. My grandfather was one of the best English polo players of his time reaching a 9 goal handicap. The higher the handicap, the better the player and as handicaps are capped at 10, he must have been good. My dad is another famous polo player. Both he and I have been lucky enough to ride with Prince William and with Prince Harry. Polo is a high-speed sport played on horseback. Each player has a mallet and the idea is to hit the ball into the goals. My horse is called Aria and I've had her for about six months. Aria and I make a great team. Last weekend, I entered the school championships at Westcroft Park Polo Club. There were 16 different teams and 108 chukkas. A chukka is a time period of 7.5 minutes during which the game is played. There are normally 6 chukkas per game. My team won the tournament and I was awarded MVP, Most Valuable Player, which is a bit like being named 'man of the match' in a football game. I love polo and hope that one day I'll be able to play for England. Charlie BlakeleyHipwood

FROM THE SIXTH FORM

DIXIT 15th March 2019

Lower 6th Business Inside Day On Wednesday Mr Hardee took four Holyport students; Anisha Sharma, Victor Jimenez, Jemima Jones and Bridget Lynch to Maidenhead to work with four Eton College students at MCFT (a kitchen maintenance company). In Holyport we believe that the most effective way to understand the world of work is to be part of it, even for a short period. This BI Day was a prime opportunity for our students to learn from business professionals in their work place and understand the factors affecting a mediumsized business. This was also a chance to experience the key components of the business and how they fit together. Holyport Lower sixth students found out how businesses measure their performance and use that information to survive and thrive in a competitive marketplace. The day consisted of experiencing the work life of employees at MCFT and students said they found it really insightful and interesting to see the behind the scenes running of the company. In addition, they also learnt how to wire a plug! Overall it was a really fun day and we thank MCFT for being such lovely and attentive hosts. by Victor Jimenez

FROM THE MATHS DEPT.

Ri Masterclass Series Concludes Each year the Mathematics department at Holyport College reaches out to other schools in Berkshire by organising a series of Mathematics Masterclasses. These are run on behalf of the Royal Institution of Great Britain and aim to inspire year 9 students to study Mathematics and other STEM subjects at A Level and University. This year’s series has just come to an end and has been a great success. 60 pupils from 20 Berkshire schools (including Holyport College) attended and enjoyed Masterclasses on a range of subjects from ‘The Nature of Infinity’ to ‘The Surprising Statistics in Clinical Drug Trials’. Speakers visited from local engineering firm AWE, The University of Bath, and a medical research firm ICERA Consulting Ltd. Our very own Mr. Hubbard also gave two masterclasses this year. Many thanks to all of the nominating schools and their members of staff who helped to supervise each week. Special thanks to the speakers who gave up their time to prepare and deliver the masterclasses this year. “I feel more comfortable about taking Maths as an A Level.” (Holyport College)
