The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family

CCF cadets flying high! On Wednesday 14th November, we had the chance to fly on a grob tutor at Royal Air Force Benson. We had to get up at 5am in the morning to have a prompt start at 8am. Both of us, including 7 other CCF cadets from Eton were all excited for the experience, especially those who hadn't flown before. To ensure our safety, we had a 30 minute parachute training in case the pilot asked us to jump out of the aircraft due to emergency reasons, which includes pulling handles to lift the aircraft canopy and unbuckling ourselves from a seat belt with five straps and most importantly, to pull the parachute handle on the right shoulder with the left hand after diving out of the aircraft in the matter of seconds. Feeling extremely safe and confident in our newly acquired skill after the half-an-hour training on the command "jump, jump", we finally wore white heavy helmets with a microphone attached, a green flight suit and the parachute in the form of a backpack. We had a chance to take control the grob tutor and to “verb” the air acrobatics such as the Looooooooooop … We felt sick after the experience!

FROM THE GEOGRAPHY DEPT

DIXIT 16th November 2018

Year 11 Geography Field Trip to Reading Thursday saw the 64 Year 11 Geographers heading off to Reading to conduct their urban geography fieldwork. Working in groups their “proper” geographical skills were tested as they had to use maps to navigate their way to numerous sites across the town to investigate how the town has changed and assess the impacts these changes have had on the quality of the environment. They also had to employ their cartography skills to map the main shopping streets, categorising the function of the buildings they encountered. For many the biggest satisfaction came from overcoming their normal inhibitions to approach members of the public in order to conduct questionnaires, although at times this also proved pretty frustrating as members of the public often aren’t that keen to talk to teenagers! The trip was rounded off with Miss Oliver and Miss Lunney taking to the microphones of their respective coaches and becoming geography tour guides as they pointed out the evidence and characteristics of the historical and current growth of Reading.

As a modern spin on the fieldwork this year we asked the students to take selfies of their group at each site, the resulting images were pretty interesting as they highlight the element of the site that the group believed to be most representative.

FROM THE SIXTH FORM

Sixth form and Scholars events this week Simon Dudley was our special guest this Thursday evening. It was fitting to host him on this day of Brexit turmoil and there was plenty of discussion on the merits of Theresa May's deal and how the Brexit endgame might play out. Rarely have we covered such a wide range of issues with a visiting speaker and, Brexit aside, interviewers, Danielle Hawkins & Louis Gregory, pushed Councillor Dudley on the housing crisis, free schools and austerity. Questions also came thick and fast from our audience of over 50 students who were engaged throughout the hour-long session. Next Thursday we host Emilia Skirmuntt, an Evolutionary Virologist, from Oxford University. All students, parents and teachers are welcome!

Twenty Holyport Economics students took up the opportunity to hear Professor Sheilagh Ogilvie from Cambridge University on Tuesday evening at Eton College. She spoke of the link between education and economic growth. Does one promote the other? And, if so, which way round is it? It was a fascinating talk which took us from sixteenth century Germany to modern-day China in its evidence base and clearly had much to offer the discipline of Development Economics. ďƒ¨

Mr Alford would like to remind Sixth Form students and their parents and carers that the deadline for submission of their UCAS applications is next Friday, 23rd November. UCAS support workshops will take place on Wednesday as usual.

Inter-House Sports Day For some of you this is the first Inter House Sport day and for other it’s a returning favourite. I would like to highlight our expectations about why we do it. All the Inter House dates are below. We commence this year on Saturday 24th November. This is a huge sporting event where we build the House spirit and develop the College ethos: " We believe in an all-round education, combined with a strong community ethos. Holyport College holds high academic aspirations for all pupils. Of equal importance is a commitment to developing the full potential of every child – personally, physically and socially. We will give our students the tools they need to go on to lead independent, purposeful and fulfilled adult lives." Our aim is not for the best person to show off but for all pupils to have a fun morning and to give opportunities for everyone to represent their House whilst developing their physical and social skills. We expect all pupils to attend Inter House Sport to represent their House either by playing or supporting. Whilst we fully understand that it might not be for everyone we ask that pupils try to take part and also come to support their House. This term we are playing rugby for the boys and hockey for the girls. If for any reason you can't attend please email: Mr Macaulay on w.macaulay@holyportcollege.org.uk regarding rugby Miss Kerr on f.kerr@holyportcollege.org.uk regarding hockey House Colours - Pupils can wear anything appropriate to support their House colours. Brunel = Blue Fawcett = Green Herschel = Yellow Milton = Red Food—Our infamous Dad's Club put on a wonderful spread at Inter House. Last year they treated people to gourmet hot dogs and burgers for £1-£2. So please do bring some money to support them as it all gets donated back to the School. Timings The sports team will take boarders to and from the event. We aim to depart school at 8:30 to meet all day pupils at their allocated venue at 9:00. We aim to start by 9:30 and to conclude matches by 10:45 with the presentation and awards concluding by 11:30. The Hockey will be played at: Masters Astro Eton Wick Road Eton

On Tuesday afternoon one of our parents, Mrs Walsh, was horrified to discover that her beloved Jack Russell Archie had disappeared from her Garden in Holyport. As she searched for him in distress some of our Sixth Form, who were walking in to the village to buy tuck, spotted her and immediately offered to help. They took Mrs Walsh home, made her a cup of tea and resumed the search. Luckily Archie was found shortly afterwards in the local pub garden—by another Archie! Mrs Walsh would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Archie, Olivia, Dario, Matteo and Santos for being so kind and helpful. Here they are with the wayward Archie upon his return!  The Dads Club Gourmet Dinner 2018 has finally arrived, this time tomorrow the Holyport College Dads Club will be setting up.
