The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family
External exams are over! GCSEs and our inaugural A Level exams have now finished and Year 11 and 13 students have left the College for this year. Some were founding students who joined the College when we opened in September 2014 and it has been a real pleasure to share their journey with them and those who have joined us along the way. We wish all the students who are not returning good luck and very best wishes for their future. They will be missed!

Holyport Village Fair
We’re always keen to support our local community and really enjoyed joining in the Holyport Village Fair last weekend. Despite the odd rain shower Holyport students performed musical numbers, ran face painting and various other stalls and helped with the set-up and clear-up operations. Students queued up to throw wet sponges at Mr McCarey and Mr Hayes in the stocks The brilliant Friends of Holyport College were there in force and whilst the ladies ran their very successful Gin Cocktail and Prosecco stall the Dad’s Club provided their by now famous and ever popular barbecue. Many thanks to all the staff, students and Friends who volunteered and huge congratulations to the Holyport Village Fair Committee for organising such a successful and enjoyable event!

FROM THE MATHS DEPT
UKMT Team Maths Challenge It wasn’t easy as pi for finalists! Aspiring mathematicians from across the UK competed against each other on Monday 17th June to lift the prestigious winner’s trophy at the National Final of the UKMT Team Maths Challenge 2019. The National Final of the Team Maths Challenge, which is run by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT), took place at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London and involved teams of four students from Years 8 and 9 (England), Years 9 and 10 (Northern Ireland) and S1 and S2 (Scotland). Over 1700 schools entered the competition and the best 88 qualified to take part in the fiendishly testing grand finale. The pressure on the day was immense and after about five hours of intense (enjoyable) maths the winners were announced and the Holyport / Eton team (which included Thandi Kamushinda, Liam O’Shea and two boys from Eton College) came second out of the 88 finalists. This was an amazing achievement and our best ever finish. Commenting on his experience on the day Liam said;
“My thoughts on the day was it was an amazing experience and a lot of nerves were Involved! Lots of memories made and very happy with how it went. Some advice for anyone next year, make sure you prepare! Overall just a good day and would 100% recommend anyone who can do it. Well done to the team!” And Thandi, “It was a good experience, the competition was very close but we made it, barely.” 4

Recent Art trips On Thursday 6th June Year 10 Artists went on a trip to Oxford. We started the day by walking around the beautiful Radcliffe Square looking for Gargoyles and Grotesques. Then we walked to the Pitt Rivers and the Oxford Museum of National History. After a quick lunch in front of the National History museum, students walked to the Botanical Gardens and spent an hour photographing and drawing the flowers. Our final stop was Modern Art Oxford for an exhibition by the portrait artist Claudette Johnson. It was a brilliant day and the students got a lot of photos and drawings to help them with their projects. Thank you to Miss Shears for organising the trip and Mrs Wade, Mrs Morrey and Nurse Kate for accompanying. ďƒ¨ On Friday 14th Miss Loudoun, Mr Beake and Miss Jean-Pierre took 28 Year 9's to London for a workshop in Egg Tempera at the National Gallery and to see the BP Portrait award at the National Portrait Gallery. ďƒŞ

FROM THE SIXTH FORM
Year 12 Economics trip
The Year 12 Economists visited the Bank of England to learn about Monetary Policy. The day started with a lecture explaining the role of the Bank, how the tools of Monetary Policy are used to manage inflation and discussing how the financial sector had become safer since the crash of 2007/8. After this the students spent some time in the museum where they were able to research the different aspects of banking in more detail as they completed The Bank’s own project worksheet for which they were each rewarded with a golden Bank of England pen!
