The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family

Red Nose Day 2019 On Friday Brunel House led the way with fundraising efforts to support their chosen cause. All week Red Noses were sold by the dream team of Peaches, Enya, Fatimah and Amy, with over 350 sold. Year 9 were given the task of organising a cake sale at break, brilliantly led by Lois and Sophie W (special mention too to Chris Mitchell for his delicious eclairs.) At lunchtime there were a series of races round the quad, with Joey winning the sack race, Morgan and Bella winning the three legged race and Mr Walker winning the egg and spoon race against the ambitious Remy! Highlight of day was morning assembly. Jack Fulford had raised lots of sponsorship for the promise of cutting his top-knot, which Mr Walker was delighted to assist with. Chantelle sang beautifully the 2017 anthem “Can I Lay by Your Side” while images of the many projects that Comic Relief supports were shown. The theme of the day was have some fun while supporting something good. Brunel and Holyport did just that, breaking through the £1,000 target set. A great day.

Eton Bioreach Microscopy with a view! Year 7 got to see another of Eton’s new Biology labs, this one with a wonderful corner spot overlooking the fields and historic buildings. Students were excited to see some living cells on their slides as well as some pre-prepared animal cells. Games were an important part of the lesson as always, this time pupils had to try and remember the details of a diagram of a protist and then instruct their team to draw it at their desk.

A memorable pun was coined “Protists are the group for all other organisms that don’t fit into other classifications...You could say they protested too much.” I’m sure our GCSE Biologist would use this to keep the kingdoms in order for their exams. Our ongoing thanks to Eton College for allowing us to use their facilities as well as Mr Bridges for organising his GCSE student to teach our year 7s. Bioreach is now oversubscribed with new year 7s asking to join every week. 

Inter House Chess Defending champions Fawcett have been knocked out of this year’s interhouse chess tournament with neither team progressing from the group stages. Milton managed to progress both their teams but in winning one pool and coming runner up in the second pool the two Milton teams will have to face each other for a place in the final. That leaves Brunel’s team, almost unchanged from the team that were runners up last year, to play Herschel for their place in the final.

Junior House Quiz Semi-Finals

Congratulations to Brunel and Fawcett for making it through the Junior House Challenge semi-finals on Tuesday co-curricular this week. Both matches went down to the final set of questions with both matches being tied going into the final minute of play (of a 30 minute match!). In the end Fawcett beat Milton 260-230 and Brunel beat Herschel 340 to 320. The final will happen on the last Tuesday of term. Senior Matches are happening the same time next week: Tuesday 26th March – Senior Semi-finals (In Dudley room) 4:05pm-4:35pm – Brunel Vs Milton 4:45pm – 5:15pm – Fawcett vs Hershel

Sixth Form Leadership Revamp – A Whole Year Group Approach Today saw Holyport College’s first ever Sixth Form Leadership Day. Mr Alford, Mr Hardee, Mrs Harding and the Sixth Form tutor team kicked off the revamped student leadership programme today. The ultimate aim is that whilst there will be a new Prefect Structure to the school, all members of the current Lower 6th will take some sort of leadership role from after Easter.

UK Intermediate Maths Challenge UK Intermediate Maths Challenge results and certificates will be handed out at the end of term. Well done to Lewis Chiu in Year 11 who qualified for the next round (Kangaroo paper). Here he can be seen hard at work answering the questions 

As a starter to this process – the entire Lower 6th were off timetable doing a series of challenges in teams – from physical exertion to problem solving, diplomacy skills in the form of a model UN conference to art and design challenges. All students represented a different country as part of the day’s competition. This has allowed the sixth form tutor team to see how students work as teams and whether any have begun to step up to the plate in terms of leadership. As we go to press the winner of the day is yet to be determined but it is clear that all students have had a fun day so

Lower 6th Students will be invited to apply for senior positions this weekend – but all sixth formers needs to fill out the Google Application Form for which Committees they would like to be on by

Lost Property

We have a new lost property system. All items left around the site during the week will be collected by the site team and PE department on a Friday and brought to the office. Named items will be sorted and form teachers will be notified so they can ask the pupil to come and collect their item. Un-named items will be kept in a locked office until the end of term when they will be put into Second Hand Uniform stock if they remain unclaimed. Parents and pupils can email lostproperty@holyportcollege.org.uk to check whether an item is in lost property.

We currently have a number of outdoor coats in lost property with no names on. If your child has lost their coat, please email lostproperty@holyportcollege.org.uk with a description of the coat and your child’s name and we will return it to them. Please make sure all your child’s property is named. If they have any items that have been passed down from a sibling or another child who has outgrown the items, please make sure that you remove the previous name and put your child’s name in.

BH Boarding Update

It has been a busy two weeks in BH boarding despite the Exeat weekend. The midweek programme continues to be packed with activities on offer: this week saw boys attending Capoeira at Eton, Yoga, Martial Arts (as well as endless football) in our sports hall, and access to talks and societies – Astronomy and Psychology with our own staff, and the Scholars lecture this week from Windsor MP Adam Afriyie. A new club started up this week – our own Mr Jacob Smith teaching Sign Language – there has been much alphabet practice seen all around the place ever since. This coming weekend sees day v boarder football, a talk at Eton by England rugby coach Eddie Jones, trips to watch Mr Macaulay playing rugby for Maidenhead and to watch Slough Jets ice hockey (thanks to Francis who plays for their juniors), then cinema trips to Bracknell on Sunday and the second Sunday Café – offering boarders a chance to graze if they get hungry during the afternoon. This week’s raffle draw prize was a trip to MacDonald’s for the lucky winners (and the less lucky Mr Walker.) Next raffle will definitely have a healthier outcome… Carpe diem, BH men. Boarder of the week BH boarder of the week goes to Dario for setting up a chess ladder – hot competition has begun. Board games have become a big thing in BH (the Year 10 Monopoly marathons are the stuff of legend!) and a suggestion box for other games we might purchase has been overflowing with ideas; who says young people can’t live away from their phones?!  

From MF Boarding Update

Another lovely week for MF house. Celebrations from the house.  Thandi, Elywn, Victoria competed in the Junior Schools Challenge with the Humanities department.  Molly, Diana, Arte, Maisie, Maite, Cate, Deboarh, Bea under 14 national fives team  Deborah and Cate were in the semifinals - BOOM!  Yr 10 were in the National hockey competition and won the cup - well done - it’s great to see the dedication from the girls

Boarder of the week Lillian. What can we say about Lillian that truely does her justice? Her nickname in house is “Lovely Lillian” as she is simply a complete delight. She is always happy and she is always up for taking part. She is such a secure and positive influence with other girls and staff really enjoy her company. A thoroughly deserved recognition of a truly lovely Lillian. 

Inspiration of the Week Chloe Smith talked to us about Harriet Tubman - she was an American abolitionist and political activist who escaped slavery and subsequently made thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved people, family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. @holy_board

FROM SCIENCE

22nd March 2019

Easter Egg Update Science will be taking delivery of 10 fertilized eggs on Monday, along with an incubator and chick food! This ties in with the Year 7 reproduction topic and students will be looking at embryo development and growth. All years will get a chance to monitor the eggs and visit the chicks! We will be posting a live camera feed on our Twitter account @HolyportScience.

Note: No chicks will be harmed in any of our experiments and we will be sending them back before Easter!

Next Wednesday all Year 9 & 10 Students will participate in a Health Career event. The NHS is the biggest employer in the UK and students should be aware that there are lots more career opportunities other than just doctors & nurses. This is a fun interactive event run by a company called Medical Mavericks and has been kindly paid for by The Friends of Holyport.
