The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family

Herschel’s Charity Week Herschel House have launched ‘Get Fit for Mental Health’ this week. They are raising money for Sport in Mind, a UK charity that uses sport and exercise to help aid the recovery of people experiencing mental health problems. Herschel’s charity day is next Thursday 31st January and will start with a whole school walk/run at 8.40am! In the meantime Mr Hayes has been gearing up for next week by running round the Quad every lunchtime, inviting other staff and students from Herschel House to join him. They are aiming to have run the equivalent of a marathon by the Exeat weekend. Mr Hayes has been like a flash of yellow lightning round the Quad every lunchtime—even the snow earlier in the week didn’t put him off!

Please email me on j.bryant@holyportcollege.org.uk if you would like any of these tickets for your child. Both operas are modern settings and sung in English and are easily accessible for opera newbies. Our trips need to break even so we can continue to run them so it’s important that all places are taken. Auditions for Spring Concert Solos Auditions are on Tuesday 29 January during the first half of co-curricular or the second half of co-curricular on Thursday 31 January for anyone who would like to perform a solo / duet / small group item in our Spring Concert. Pieces don’t have to be perfect or complete yet - I’m looking for performances that show promise given that we have another 8 weeks to prepare. The Spring Concert is our annual showcase of all the Music Department clubs and ensembles and students chosen to do solos will be those who demonstrate fantastic musicianship at any level, not necessarily those who are the most advanced. There will be an open platform opportunity for all abilities in the summer term.

FROM THE SIXTH FORM

Year 12s You and your parents will shortly receive an email giving information about a number of opportunities to study at a number of university summer schools such as Bath, Bristol, Edinburgh plus many more. You will also get information about Target Oxbridge and UNIQ Oxford that offer additional support for those considering applying to Oxford or Cambridge. All of these are free and provide a wonderful opportunity to experience university life. Please note that the deadline for UNIQ Oxford is next Monday (28/01/19). Also Holyport Primary School has asked if any of our Year 12 students could come along to support their Year 6 prepare for their SAT examinations. They would like some students who are available between 2-3pm on Mondays, but also would like another group of 4-5 students on one other day during the week. This is a great opportunity for your CV and/or UCAS personal statement, and the Year 13’s who to took part last year really enjoyed the experience. Please contact Mrs Harding for more details.

Holyport Lectures This weeks speaker was our first ever from a creative field, graphic designer Sophie White from the Homemade Cake company. She explained to our budding young artists that there is no time like the present, their youthful energy could be spent improving their artistic craft while they have the resources and guidance at school. Sophie recounted her experiences across a range of companies in the marketing department and designing posters, packaging and webpages. She recommended artists start to learn some simple coding of websites to set them apart from other artists looking for work in the corporate world. She showed a wide range of her artworks both those done in her free time and designed for her company work. 

Next week’s speaker Julia Pearce, Investment Bank Lawyer

Life in Investment Banking and the City of London. What’s a career in finance like? What are the particular challenges facing women? With more than 25 years' experience in financial services, Julia has supported investment banking platforms in major multi-cultural financial institutions in London and across the globe. Skilled in Equity and Debt Capital Markets, Corporate Finance, M&A and due diligence across the banking, corporate and sovereign sectors. FROM THE SPORTS FIELDS

25th January 2019

News from Sport Congratulations to Bella Kent in Year 9 who has been offered a golf scholarship at Stoke Park!

Cara Terry placed 7th in the cross country last weekend and was the only student from Holyport to qualify for the next round. Well done Cara!

Last weekend’s Saturday sport saw lots of great performances! There were fantastic efforts from the U14/15 B football team against LVS who held on to a 3-2 victory. The U14 A team continue their fine start to the season with a 2-1 victory over LVS. Goals from Alan and Taylor. Coach, Mr Smith named the whole team as MOTM, for their excellent performance. Well done boys! 

 The U15, U14, U13 and U12 Netball teams all traveled to Woldingham School on Saturday and put in copious amounts of effort on what was a very cold Saturday morning in January. A super big thank you to all the parents who came to support and also shuttle students to and from the College!

The U14’s and U15’s games were extremely close and the U12’s and U13’s showed great attitude and determination to 2 very good Woldingham sides. 

FROM THE SPORTS FIELD

Well done to Lili and Morgan who represented Holyport College last weekend in Newbury for a cross country meet.

The U14 Holyport Five’s team travelled to Cambridge University and played extremely well! They even went sightseeing afterwards around the famous town.

We also hosted our first Ladies Five’s Festival with 36 pairs competing in a fun afternoon. Thank you to all and a special mention to Miss Kerr for organising! 

 Tuesday’s unexpected snowfall didn’t stop our sports teams when it came to their league fixtures, the U16’s played some amazing football winning 5-0 Vs EPS. Finished off with a great team goal. Well done to all involved! 

Finally a big Get Well Soon to Mr Cohen who broke his leg on Wednesday. Rest up and we will see you soon!!
