The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family

Your help is needed Afternoon Pick-up With the College reaching full capacity this term, we are urgently looking at ways to ease the congestion on site at the end of the school day (and particularly on Fridays). Whilst we look at longer term solutions, parents and carers can help us out in the following ways: 

By only driving to the College at the end of the school day where absolutely necessary - the more students who use the College buses, the better for all concerned

By refraining from parking on the grass verges adjacent to the Astroturf to allow traffic to move in both directions on this access road

By arriving a little later: the traffic is usually clearing by 17:45 Monday to Thursday and by 16:10 on a Friday (one of the options we are looking at is a compulsory staggering of departure times on a Friday but, in the meantime, parents and carers voluntarily coming in later would really help matters

Most importantly, by turning left out of the College gates. The overwhelming majority of significant delays are caused by individuals waiting to turn right onto the Ascot Road. If you turn left out of the gates, left again in to Forest Green Road and left again at the pub, you will be at the Village Green without delaying the traffic flow on site by turning right out of the College gates

Finally, another reminder that NO student is allowed to drive on to the site at any time, whether in a car or on a motorcycle. Quite apart from our parking restrictions, allowing students to drive to, or park within two miles of, the College is expressly forbidden within our funding agreement

Your help in supporting the above measures whilst we work on a longer-term solution will be much appreciated. Thank you. Ben McCarey Acting Head Master @holyportcollege

Last Thursday Mrs Crocker led a trip to the New Scientist Live festival at ExCel in London. The group of Year 10 and Year 11 students had a fantastic day. When asked for their highlights, these included:

The talk on Mercury and the new satellite that’s being released to monitor the planet

The genetic modification on bacteria and how it can help prevent the greenhouse effect

Getting some careers advice from a specialist about studying actuarial science and going into it as a profession. Also the virtual reality roller coasters were so cool

  

Hearing Tim Peake talk about his experiences in space

Finding out potential applications for quantum physics in medicine and technology

 

Finding interesting Maths and Science books

Learning about Tim Peake’s adventures in space and Will Millard’s experiences in the jungle

Finding out about aeronautical engineering because I want to be a pilot

 

Exploring the Cosmos section

The question and answer session with Tim Peake, Nics Weatherill and Will Millard was really inspiring and made me want to go on expeditions

The Royal Veterinary College pop up stand

Hearing about Nics Wetherill’s experience in Antarctica Learning about preventing peat bog smouldering fires from Imperial College students

Watching Tim Peake’s talk and learning about life on the international space station.

The standout highlight from a fantastic day at New Scientist Live was the lecture by famous neurosurgeon Henry Marsh on his life in brain surgery

FROM THE BOARDING HOUSES Boarders’ cinema trip

Last night a group of aesthetes, accompanied by Mr Walker and Mr Grimble, visited the Odeon in Maidenhead to watch the live screening from London’s West End of Sir Ian McKellen playing King Lear. Despite the long running time (nearly 4 hours), it was an amazing performance by all the cast, with Sir Ian’s Lear by turns terrifying, amusing and pitiable as he descended into madness and ultimately captivity. With a trip tonight to Norden Farm to see “The Marriage of Figaro”, Holyport Boarding is proving itself a cultural haven for those wishing to embrace culture with a capital C!

FROM THE ART ROOMS

DIXIT 28th Sept 2018

Art exhibition visit On Thursday evening Chloe and Tess enjoyed an art exhibition by artist Anna Razumovskaya at Artique Galleries in Windsor. Razumovskaya is an internationally acclaimed artist who focuses on the female form. Her paintings are impressionistic with a modern touch. Our girls were very impressed by the works, many of which were sold on the night. They also had the opportunity of asking Razumovskaya questions about her works which was a great experience.

FROM THE SCHOLARS

BBC's medical correspondent drops in for a check-up Holyport students were delighted to welcome the BBC's Fergus Walsh as a visiting speaker last night. Global pandemics, Artificial Intelligence, the future of the NHS and gender equality at the BBC were all on the agenda in a stimulating hour-long session! Sophie Middleton & Greg Simond were on top of their game as wellinformed and erudite student interviewers and there were plenty of thoughtful questions from the audience too. Next Thursday evening we return to the territory of political and social issues with the visit of Connor Woodman. Connor is a social activist and campaigner on prison reform, education and global justice who has been widely published across a range of academic and popular journals. It's sure to be another thought-provoking evening! Our visiting speaker events take place every Thursday evening at 6.45pm in the Dudley Room. All students from all year groups plus parents and teachers are most welcome! No sign-up necessary!

Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, based in Didcot in Oxfordshire, have notified us that the applications for their work experience programme (www.stfc.ac.uk/workexperienceral) are now open – if you are in Years 10-13, and interested in a career in one of these STEM-based fields, we would encourage you to apply. Applications will stay open until the end of December, but fill up quickly. They offer two types of placements, traditional placements and an Engineering Experience Week. · Traditional placements are aimed at students in Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 and offer a great opportunity to experience life as a scientist, engineer or computer scientist at a world-class research laboratory working individually with a supervisor. In addition to purely STEM-based placements, we also offer placements in our Library, Business and Communications departments. These placements can take place between April and August.

· The Engineering Experience Week is aimed at Year 10 and Year 12 students and will take place 8 – 12 July 2019. Students will be given the opportunity to work in small teams (4 or 5 students) to get involved in a hands-on engineering project mentored by engineers from RAL. All students wishing to visit the lab on work experience or work shadowing in the 2018-19 academic year must have applied by 31 December 2018. Don’t miss out on these fantastic opportunities - go on their website and see if it’s for you! Mrs Belbin

THE FROM THE DIXIT BOARDING HOUSES COMMUNITY 28th Sept 2018

Halloween 2018 A Police message for parents from PC Graham Slater 

Halloween will soon be upon us again on 31st October, which this year falls on the Wednesday after half term break. In previous years, we have had a few problems in the local area with anti -social behaviour caused by a small number of teenagers who think this period is an excuse to behave in a disorderly way. Examples include vandalism, egg & flour throwing, underage drinking and illegal use of fireworks.

Parents, please speak with your children if they are planning to go out on Halloween night and evenings across the holiday week. Make sure you know where they will be going, who they will be with and what they plan to do!

In the lead up to this period there has again been a combined effort between a number of local agencies including Police, Berks Fire & Rescue Service and Local Authority staff to try reduce any such problems across the half term week. There will also be increased Police and Community Warden patrols during this period to reassure residents and deter any antisocial acts. Those that do decide to behave in this way will be dealt with firmly.

Please also consider the safety of your children. Trick or Treat is really an activity for younger children who should always be escorted by a responsible adult. Ideally, arrangements should be made in advance with householders who are happy to receive them. Teenagers should know that going around in large groups can be intimidating to many residents, road users and pedestrians. Elderly and vulnerable members of the community can find Halloween a particularly worrying time when they receive repeated calls at their door. Many residents do not want to receive Trick or Treaters at this time and their privacy and peace should be respected and not result in them becoming targets for abuse and vandalism. For further Halloween advice please contact the Schools Officer or your local Neighbourhood Policing Team via the central police number : 101 Further details can be found on the Thames Valley Police website at :
