We Will Remember

This morning, our community came together in the quad for a poignant and moving service of remembrance. Mr Brownridge officiated the service and spoke to our community about the importance of understanding and embracing one another's differences and of the strength which diversity and difference brings to our community. It really was a beautiful occasion.

Senior Maths Team Challenge

On Wednesday evening, 3 groups of Further Mathematicians set foot to Eton College for a Maths competition taking place in the Upper School. Tensions were high with the Etonians and the other schools we've never heard of. Competing in 3 rounds of intense Maths for the duration of 3 hours, we worked together to complete as many questions as possible in the time allowed.

In round 1, we were given 10 questions to achieve in the time of 50 minutes to complete. In round 2, we were then split into pairs within our groups of 4 to answer the questions. This required the first pair to give the answer to the other pair for them to get to their answer. In round 3, it was the relay round. We needed to complete as many questions as fast as possible and run to give the answer to the closest staff before moving on to the next question.

We didn’t quite make the cut for top five but we tried our best and had loads of fun whilst puzzling with Maths.

Problem of the Week

Here in the Maths Department, we like to explore a variety of puzzles using a wide range of skills. So we are going to be reintroducing the Problem of the Week.

Please submit your solutions by email to Miss Searle by Friday 18th.

This week’s puzzle is a Kakuro.

Kakuro is like a crossword puzzle with numbers. Each "word" must add up to the number provided in the clue above it or to the left. Words can only use the numbers 1 through 9, and a given number can only be used once in a word. Every kakuro puzzle has one and only solution, and can be solved through logic alone. Have fun!

As part of Year 12 PSHE session, Thames Valley Police invited Year 12 to watch a performance in theatre on road safety. The Safe Drive, Stay Alive Tour aimed to bring awareness to new drivers about the consequences of careless driving and taking precautions to stay safe.

“Whilst it was hard hitting, it was a reality check and as 16-17 year olds, it has encouraged us to adopt a cautious attitude to driving. It was great that there was an emphasis not only on the repercussions on our selves but also on the people we love dearly around us. It was a truly impactful experience. Thank You” Amaya Uppal

Last Thursday afternoon, around 20 people from years 8-10 were invited to complete a workshop by the World Poetry Slam Champion Harry Baker. It consisted of us listening to some of his poems with some background context on how they were created to us creating our own poems. It was a great opportunity and we ended up reading some of our poems to the audience."

Later that evening students attended Harry Baker's performance at Norden Farm.

"Overall, the experience of the poetry slam at Norden Farm was exciting and enjoyable. Harry Baker is an inspiring entertainer with a witty sense of humour

Eton D&T workshop

On Tuesday, 13 enthusiastic Year 7 Brunel students went to the Eton Design Workshop to create desk tidies. This involved students learning how to use various equipment including saws, drills and sanding machines. Although initially a little terrified at the prospect of losing a finger to a saw, the Year 7s quickly got to grips with the techniques and were able to design unique pieces of work.

The students had complete control over their products and after 2.5 hours, 13 both practical and stylish products were created. It was a fantastic opportunity and the Brunel students were exceptionally well behaved well done all! Also a big thank you to Mr Parry who organised the trip and Mrs Smith who drove us there.

FROM THE PE DEPARTMENT DIXIT

A great start to the week with our Holyport girls playing their first football fixture on monday. We hosted a very strong Newlands side at home, a fantastic game with a lot of girls playing some high quality football. We were lucky enough to have year 7, 8 & 9 students to form our team, with Elsie Nicholls showing fantastic leadership and Lily Flitton scoring her first football goal. Very well done to all the girls!!

Our U12 football team unfortunately are out of their cup competition after facing LVS Ascot. After taking an early lead with a goal from Lucas, the team had to battle it out in the second half. A valiant effort from our year 7s and they should be very proud!

Our senior fixtures this week unfortunately both ended in defeat. Our hockey and rugby teams faced Reddam House and both sides made it a tough match for their opponents. The hockey girls were defensively solid with Darcey H making some incredible saves and Molly Martin putting in a brilliant shift in CM.

The rugby team were unlucky to lose to Reddam House by only 3 points but it made for a very intense game.

Our Awesome Year 7 girls had their netball tournament on Thursday and thoroughly impressed Miss Butler and Mrs Lubbers with their improved skills.

National Online Chess League Round 3

Holyport chess team narrowly missed out to Tonbridge School 4 2 this week. Gordon’s opponent unfortunately didn’t show up, and 3 of the games could easily have gone either way. Our star player of the week was Rhiannan who scored an excellent win on board 3. A good opening gave Rhiannan a small advantage but a miscalculation on her part swung the game in her opponent’s favour and it seemed all was lost. However, Rhiannan kept playing good moves, forcing her opponent to play correctly and after a strong pawn push her opponent blundered and she took advantage with a rapid checkmate. Congratulations! Round 4 will be in two weeks time.
