Thank you for purchasing Xenocider for Dreamcast and supporting independent games. You have no idea how this project has changed our lives. No, wait, you don’t understand. We mean it. Xenocider is the result of more sleepless nights, arguments, laughs and headaches than we can count. No matter how tough and unforgiving the game was conceived to be, what you are holding in your hands truly is a labour of love, corny and clichéd as it may sound. Nedless to say, over the last five years (we know, we know), this heavily-armoured, blood-thirsty alien cyborg we call Xara has slowly become a living thing of her own, one that we plan on revisiting... one day. So what’s the story, I hear you ask?

Retro Sumus is a small, independent game development team who got together to revisit genres and concepts we felt were underused, or not explored in depth back in their time. Chui, Abel and Carlos had previously met at events such as RetroMadrid, but it wasn’t until they got recruited for another indie effort that they became friends, and decided to try and create their own. Juanjo joined the team as soon as he read the very first pitch. Inspired by classics like Space Harrier and Sin & Punishment, Xenocider will take you not only back to a time when arcade shooters were at the top of their game, but also on a journey through decades of sci-fi adventure films and comic books. Well, that’s the plan, anyway!

An innovative approach to the on-rails shooter genre and the first 3D arcade game designed for the Dreamcast in fifteen years, Xenocider is our personal 3D homage to the aforementioned classics, with a little influence from Galaxy Force and even Shinobi thrown into the mix. The soundtrack, unlockable game modes, and even the enemy design are peppered with little tributes, easter eggs and not-sosubtle influences from so many other (mostly Sega) franchises it’s not even funny. We’re kind of making a statement here.

Wait, what did you expect? An instruction manual with actual instructions? On how to play? Fear not, brave gamer. The first stage is a perfectly self-explanatory tutorial. You’ll be fine. Last but not least, there’s a bunch of achievements in the game for you to unlock. Also, who needs next-gen hardware when Xenocider runs at a smooth, sexy 60 fps, huh?
