Tableware: elegant entertaining

IMPRESSIVE TABLETOPS

Tableware sets the tone for your dining experience. Experts have noted that weight, texture and colour can all contribute to how someone perceives the food they are eating. Though white circular plates have always been a standard in tableware, irregular-shaped plates and bowls in darker muted colours have become increasingly popular in recent years, adding a less formal look to the table. Patterned plates and bowls offer a playful setting, but try to combine them with some plain plates to prevent the table from looking too busy. Here are some ideas…

The It’s My Match porcelain collection from Villeroy & Boch has three different and stunningly attractive surfaces inspired by nature, in powder pink, green and white (www.villeroy-boch.es).

Left Scandinavia meets Asia with this Iittala X Issey Miyake collection. The range aims to add harmonious ambience to eye-catching visual detail through its unique pentagon shape. The small, versatile plate is ideal for serving condiments or can be used as a side plate (www.iittala.com). Above Left The design of Kodanska’s Danish Summer Bowl was originally set out to be a cocktail glass, but the designers experienced some issues and they decided instead to use the top of the glass as a beautiful bowl. It comes in an array of colours and is ideal for entertaining guests this summer (www.kodanska.dk). Above The Babyboop from Alessi is a stainless-steel hors d’oeuvre platter with four handy compartments (www.alessi.com).

Above The Junto stoneware collection from Rosenthal has been fired with reactive glazing, which provides its unique colour and finish (www.rosenthal.de). Right The Eva Solo tumbler has an eye-catching angled rim. It is dishwasher-safe and is a fun way to serve drinks at a party. Eva Solo have also created other glasses with the same slanted edge if you would like to have a matching glass collection. Available from Escandi Design on the Mijas Road (www.escandidesign.com).

Above The Iron Pot from Serax is actually made from stainless-steel. Its minimalist black square shape allows the flowers within to sing in all their colourful glory (www.serax.com). Above Right The Juno teak pot features a natural grain that creates a boho look which would fit into any style of home. Available from Sybartum on the Mijas Road or online (www.sybartum.com). Right Designed by Teresa Sapey for Vondom, the new Adan Nano Glossy vase is a glamorous sculptural model made from polycarbonate resin which is 100 per cent recyclable. Vondom is available from Outdoor Concepts at the top of the Boulevard in San Pedro de Alcántara (www. outdoorconcepts.es) and Alison Design Studio in Pol. Ind. Nueva Campana 73 in Nueva Andalucía (www.alisonbethellcollins.com). Opposite Page The new Moroccan vase collection from Hay is handblown in Morocco. The painted recycled glass adds a splash of colour to a room, and the range is available in two sizes in a variety of mono-coloured or colour-blocked designs. Available from BoConcept Plus Store on the Mijas Road and in C. de Negocios Oasis in Marbella (www.plusstore.es).

ELEGANT CANDLES

Candles are a great way to add a warm ambience to any room, with dancing flames that can be enchanting and mesmerising. Choose a scented candle and bask in its aroma as it fills the room with your favourite fragrance – even after it has been blown out.

Above The Blossom candleholder from Applicata was designed by Anders Nørgaard and inspired by flower buds about to blossom, as well as the fifties and sixties eras when candlesticks were often created from the leftovers of work by wood turners who made furniture legs (www.applicata.dk). Above Right The SML candle holders from Jahoko are made of glazed porcelain. The shiny glaze makes the light mirror itself in the candle holder, and you can stack them and mix-and-match to your taste (www.jahoko.com). Right Ester & Erik’s tapered candles have a pointed top which makes this particular collection so distinctive and elegant. Available from Escandi Design on the Mijas Road (www.escandidesign.com).

Precious stones found in Myanmar (formerly Burma) provide the inspiration for Vila Hermanos’ Myanmar collection, which dazzles in vibrant treasure-like colours. These candles are perfect for the summer and would make a wonderful gift (www.vilahermanos.com).
