FLOOR TO CEILING Gulf-view condo becomes a fantastic blend of modern and British West Indies

I

Infusing modern living with British West Indies style, Wendy Berry, owner and principal designer of W Design Interiors, uses her strong, creative prowess to design this new condominium, floor-to-ceiling. Berry works closely with Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring to create a memorable flooring design. Tiffany Guido, vice president of Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring, shares, “Working with Wendy Berry, and the W Design Interiors team, is an aweinspiring experience. Wendy knows how to capture the true beauty of the floors with her impeccable design talent.” Pulling from tropical, whimsical, and modern inspiration, Berry delivers a one-of-a-kind design for this high-rise condominium in Naples. Berry lays out the space to capitalize on the stunning view of the Gulf Coast. The charismatic stone-and-wood flooring foyer design is truly a dramatic, high-end statement. Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring uses certified European French Oak, and Berry selects this smoked and lightly brushed Taormina floor — using it wall-to-wall. Intricate, wood-clad ceiling designs delineate each space, yet their shared qualities garner a cohesive feel throughout. “With the warm, dark wood floor, and the dark wood ceiling, we wanted to keep the fabrics light and bright,” shares Berry. The strong ceiling elements elevate the luxurious warmth of this space. u

Foyer: “The foyer was designed to give these homeowners a unique show-stopping entryway,” says Berry, who delivers that experience by using Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring’s Taormina Herringbone product, from the Dolce Vita Collection, with an exotic limestone inlay on the floor, sourced and professionally installed by Naples Flooring Company. The unique floor-to-ceiling glass, framed by the dark-walnut wooden trim, amplifies this jaw-dropping entryway. The same dark-stained colors repeat on the modern-style door and the ceiling detail. Found while W Design attended High Point Market, the abstract artwork — with pops of cerulean and crimson set above an entryway bench with mirrored colors — adds a freeform visual to this linear design. “The most amazing part of this unit, other than the unique design, is the view,” shares Berry, who uses the view as a piece of art and the finishing touch to each space.

Berry carries the same wood flooring from the foyer throughout the rest of the space. Guido describes how the Dolce Vita Collection product, “features widths of over 10 inches with very long lengths, and creates an overall look with less seams and more panache.”

Dining Room: Richly dark-stained ceiling beams, hailing from their British West Indies’ roots, rest between the white, modern moulded trim details on this striking ceiling. “The modern West Indies aesthetic was carried through the artwork,” shares Berry, who selects these two wonderful pieces, Alicia Armstrong, Clear View, and Liz Barber-Leventhal, Waterfall 2, from Gardner Colby Gallery. “We chose the dining room artwork for the pops of blue and green that complement the colors in the custom rug.” Berry instills a serene ambiance with delicate forms seen on the table-length Urban Electric chandelier, and by way of her muted color choices. The soft driftwood finish of the dining chairs with sleek, gunmetal-gray leather and tape-and-nailhead trim by W Design pair beautifully with the Century Furniture dining table in a blonde, cerused oak finish. Office: Full-height glass walls encase this functional office while preserving the alluring Gulf view. Large glass barn doors with rectilinear chrome handles — alongside the punchy, abstract art — offer modern details. The built-in shelves are perfect for adding character-rich pieces and share the custom stain with the waterfall-edge desk. A three-candle iron lantern hangs above the sleek W Home Collection Kalea Chaise that is adorned with a plush black, white, and gray pillow. This breathtaking lounge area is the essence of this design concept.

Clear glass walls encase the corner office to preserve the spectacular coastal view, connecting this study to the main living space. Berry melds clean lines, dark wood tones, character pieces, and a soothing colorway to encapsulate this blend of modern design and the tropics. “There is a balance and play of color in the artwork and fabrics between neutral textures and bright pops,” delights Berry. Rich, walnut brown, and a crisp white fill this space, and Berry layers in softer wood tones, blues, greens, and even candy red for impact. Large, sculptural vases throughout offer an organic presence that softens the clean lines of the architecture. u

“The client was very specific about the unique artwork they wanted, and we sourced each piece thoughtfully,” recalls Berry. The stunning abstract artwork of the entry echoes the swanky, upscale feel of the foyer, while the abstract artwork in the dining room mirrors the softer expression of this soothing dining space. Whimsical guest rooms with spectacular views each have their own unique flavor and style, yet harmonize with the overall design concept. Owner of W Home retail showroom in Ohio, Berry shares, “We custom design most of the upholstery, but we also have a variety of unique, one-of-a-kind accessories, candle lines, and artisan’s contributions from all over the world.” She incorporates W Home pieces in this remarkable Naples’ condo. Berry describes the unit as having been a blank canvas, to which she eloquently delivers this fresh, floor-to-ceiling, modern-infused, British West Indies design to beautifully capture the ambiance of the Caribbean for modern living. n

Master Bedroom: A custom Vanguard bed from W Design rests under the stunning and dramatic custom ceiling. Stained in the same warm walnut, this up-lit step-ceiling is given the illusion of height by the soft glow of the hidden tape lighting. A pearly wallcovering wraps the room complementing the plush, subtle white-and-gray, wall-to-wall rug. Atop the Noir Furniture nightstands are a pair of powder-blue ceramic lamps from Visual Comfort, and the transitional, gold-frame mirrors on either side of the gray, tufted headboard complete the look and reflect the stunning tropical view.

Guest Bedroom, Above: Crisp, white bedding with textural pillow shams on this modern canopy bed topped with soft gray accents fill this guest space nicely. “This is a room with natural materials, full of neutrals and texture rather than pops of color,” describes Berry. Natural twig elements on the soft area rug are mirrored in the bronze lamps, while the front of the hexagon Bernhardt nightstands in creamy white mirror the bed pillows. By the gorgeous floor-to-ceiling window sits a woven banana-fiber seat rocker in a teak veneer frame that splendidly contrasts the rest of this space. Guest Bathroom: “We love to do a fun wallpaper in the bathrooms. In this unit, the bathrooms are built with the cabinetry and countertop already, so this was a fun way to give life to this space,” shares Berry. She does so with the coral and sand color scheme found in the diamond-pattern wallcovering, meant to resemble embroidery and hand block linen. Polished nickel and white glass Basil Linear sconces from Visual Comfort bring in a modern feel and complement the existing space handsomely. Guest Bedroom, Right: Berry draws inspiration for this fanciful guest bedroom from her stays at the Whitby Hotel in New York City. “I love the whimsical design at the Whitby. The fabrics are the most amazing quality, with a combination of patterns, textures, and colors that are not only fun, but so well done,” says Berry. Custom made by W Home Collection for W Design, the headboards are anything but traditional. Berry infuses this guest room with a touch of the Whitby’s whimsy in an artistic, playful, and colorful avian motif. She uses a combination of patterns like the Ambella Collection bench in a Manuel Canovas fabric to build this eclectic guest room.

Lanai: “The view — it’s what this building is all about,” delights Berry, who creates a comfortable outdoor gathering space for family and entertaining. Berry selected woven Palecek chairs and a casual white dining table for two along with colorful lemon tree motif throw pillows to adorn the outdoor sofa in white. The stunning Phillip’s Collection sculptural wood table warms up this outdoor living space.
