PUBLISHER’S LETTER Our entire team at Home & Design is excited to present the spectacular homes in this Fall edition, which reflect the Southwest Florida lifestyles and recent market trends in our area. We spoke with some of our favorite designers, builders, and architects about the home trends they are embracing this year, from color palettes to furniture, even landscaping and beyond. And while some design aesthetics are timeless, it’s always fun to see the fresh new ideas designers are introducing into their work. The most significant trend we see this year is livability. From open concepts that connect dining rooms and great rooms to expansive outdoor living spaces that provide ample room for entertaining, complete with fireplaces and pools, these areas are made warm and inviting.

Copper finish gas lanterns from Bevolo greet you at the entrance of the large circular driveway that arcs around the existing oak tree. Lucas Lagoons designs and builds this spectacular 360-degree flat rock water feature, of which Lucas Congdon, pool and landscape designer of Lucas Lagoons, says, “Your senses are teased by the sounds and visuals of the front water feature, and when you look through to the back of the house, you can see the majestic waterfall and everything ties together.” The standing seam metal roof pairs well with the black window frames. These befitting-style windows are from Andersen Windows & Doors by Naples Lumber.

HIDDEN GEM

THE BACKYARD OF THIS COASTAL FARMHOUSE HOME CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF PRIVATE RESORT LIVING

57

Stairs: Thies shares that the iron and glass star-shaped pendant symbolizes safe harbor — like a guiding star. Fusing farmhouse with coastal style, a painted white nickel gap surrounds the wood X-beam on the ceiling crafted by Potter Homes. This X shape repeats on the entry way landing zone below — done in a European white oak flooring from Real Wood Floors. The rustic wood and industrial metal elements blend on the stairs and are a purposeful architectural moment that can be seen through the front windows. 58

In a quiet neighborhood, steps away from the Cocohatchee River, a warm-hearted family envisions a coastal farmhouse resort-style home as a haven for fellowship. “The very first time I saw the site, I called it the hidden gem,” shares Nate Johnson, builder and partner of Potter Homes. Lush foliage and large oak trees fill this seclusive oversized lot. The clients enlist Architect Steven Jallad of MHK Architecture & Planning to design a home that is a departure from the normal Florida aesthetic — Jallad describes this style as coastal farmhouse. Alex Thies, owner and lead interior designer of the boutique design firm Adelyn Charles Interiors, shares, “You can walk into this house, and besides the palm trees, you wouldn’t realize you were in Florida. It feels more like a house that belongs up north.” To create a restorative vacation-level experience for the backyard, the clients turn to Lucas Congdon, pool and landscape designer of Lucas Lagoons. u

Family Room: Potter Homes and their team of carpenters create the intersecting ceiling beams and use a CNC machine to custom design and mill the curvilinear segments. Mounted to the whitewashed brick fireplace is a 150-year-old barn-wood mantle. Resting in front of the television are two custom Vanguard chairs with a textured blue fabric on the back. “These chairs bring in color and interest, but the seat itself is in a performance fabric — everything has an elegance, but is very forgiving,” expresses Thies.

Bar: Gunmetal door frames and brass hardware balance the medium oak cabinet bar from Ruffino Cabinetry, while a whitewashed brick backsplash can be seen through the glass-front cabinets. Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery provides the undercounter beverage center, and beside it, Potter Homes converts a reclaimed whisky barrel, transforming it into a sink that features a hammered copper basin fitted with an industrial style copper faucet. For this playful recreation space, Thies selects durable wood-like tile floor from DeMarco Tile. homeanddesign.net

59

Jallad comments, “In line with the farmhouse style, we compartmentalized the home into smaller elements so that it feels more pedestrian in scale.” Jallad reinforces the farmhouse appeal with gable walls and arched trusses that highlight the gable peaks. White mortar between the earthy stone cladding complements the board and batten siding, while steep roof lines and dormers add to the dynamic exterior. “I respect the opinions of everybody, and I research what architectural materials and interior finishes make up the palette,” shares Congdon, who carries those stylings through to the backyard for a cohesive design. Thies and her design team, Rachel Spadavecchia and Emily Schlimm, collaborate on projects frequently. Here they fuse industrial style with farmhouse charm for an eclectic, inviting modern farmhouse interior. Honoring the coastal setting, Thies incorporates blue hues amid a neutral backdrop. “Splashing color here and there to give the design personality, we embraced deep navy, green, and pink,” delights Thies, who layers textures, rich woods, brick, and black accents. u

Dining Room: As a chic alternative to the enclosed wine room, Thies incorporates SubZero wine towers from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery into the bleached oak built-in from Ruffino Cabinetry. As a house warming gift, Potter Homes presents a solid dining table with smokey-gray epoxy that fills the natural crack in the black walnut table top for an astonishing artistic expression. This element ties into the black base and the adjacent black frames on the glassfront cabinets. Much like the elegant abstract art, the two powder-blue host chairs from Century add a touch of color and a dash of class.

“The hood has a traditional notion but is done in a more modern, clean-line way,” shares Thies. Kitchen: This airy farmhouse kitchen is a combination of white and bleached oak cabinets from Ruffino Cabinetry with a stunning gray, white, and beige quartzite countertop containing a large apron sink. An uncommon and adorable feature is the pooch-feeding station clad in the same quartzite. Potter Homes integrates this custom, unfolding cafe-style window from Andersen Windows, sourced through Naples Lumber, to better service the outdoor living space. The wood base counter stools with woven-rope back add a coastal vibe. 62

Kitchen Range & Hood: The gray and white marble mosaic backsplash from DeMarco Tile marries a geometric pattern with a traditional medium. This magnificent, pure white La Cornue range from the CornuFé series is polished with brass accents, courtesy of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Providing no upper cabinets here on purpose, Thies lets these stunning elements shine. “The hood has a traditional notion but is done in a more modern, clean-line way,” shares Thies. This bell-shaped hood is custom made by Ruffino Cabinetry.

63

Master Bathroom: Lucas Lagoons designs a private garden and water feature outside the master bathroom. “The homeowners are not just looking out at nothing,” explains Congdon. “They have a view that brings the outdoors in. They get to peek into nature, but no one can peek in!” Thies uses a large format, white onyx-like tile for the back wall, and a marble mosaic from DeMarco Tile that flows down the partition walls to the shower floor. The washbasin tub from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery pulls in the farmhouse style, while antique brass sconces from Wilson Lighting add an industrial element.

Master Bedroom: A modern ceiling fan from Lighting First hangs from the vaulted ceiling, from which painted white nickel gap paneling flows down to surround the three-sided DaVinci fireplace from Southern Coast Fireplaces. “We decided on a fireplace for ambiance, and with the noise from the waterfall outside, it elevates this space from master bedroom to master retreat,” says Johnson. The custom-made bed from Vanguard with a delicate iron canopy garners the feel of a traditional four-poster bed.

Bedroom Nook: To create this cozy reading nook, Thies designs a window seat with drawer storage below and two built-in bookcases, both from Ruffino Cabinetry. The finish on the brass library lights tie into the brass pulls on the drawers, while cream and powder-blue accent pillows create a pleasing palette on top of a dustyrose cushion. The scheme carries into the adjoining bathroom with a warm-white, furniture-style vanity from Ruffino Cabinetry, an aqua blue vinyl wallcovering, and contemporary brass pendants.

Bunk Bedroom (Below): This forest-themed bunk room features an ebony stain bunkbed with trundle. Modern elements like the Lighting First ceiling fan and the pewter-gray bedspreads add a sophistication to this whimsical woodland space. A series of thin wood slices are applied like tile to the headboard wall, and a watercolor mountain range mural on the adjacent wall solidifies the rustic nature of this room.

Bedroom (Right): An ivory-white drapery with a gold brass rod inspires this sweet country bedroom and offers balance to the engaging wallpaper print. Thies adds a neutral grasscloth wallcovering to the vaulted ceiling for added warmth and texture to the playful palette of teal, soft pink, and olive green. This winsome bed is a dream with a plush creamy-white carpeting for comfort underfoot.

Laundry Room: Blue, gray, and cream hues fill this luxurious laundry room that features a laundry basket storage system, a craft center, and a built-in ventilated litter box. The blue-gray cabinets from Ruffino Cabinetry have brass hardware and are a delight atop the mod-fashion style tile floor. For a Florida vibe, Thies selects a brass Serena & Lily capiz shell pendant.

This home wouldn’t be a destination without its vacation-style backyard. Huge fans of Congdon’s reality television series “Insane Pools Off The Deep End,” the homeowners knew Congdon would be the perfect choice to design their oasis hideaway. Growing up in Vermont and working off the land gave Congdon an appreciation for mountains, rivers, rock formations, and streams that inspire these imaginative, interactive outdoor designs. Before the work begins, Congdon invites the homeowners to his rock yard in Tennessee to get to know them, their style, and tastes. “There’s nothing more iconic than a coconut palm to symbolize relaxation,” says Congdon, designing this tropical escape to include open areas that serve as gathering spaces near the fire pit where the family enjoys playing games. There is also a resort-style pool with a slide, a tranquil waterfall, and an enchanting grotto. u

Indoor Gym | Pool: This spacious exercise room looks out under the pergola that connects the architecture to this resort-style pool by Lucas Lagoons. The free-form pool features a gargantuan commercial slide, yet Congdon masks it in Tennessee rock. 48 tons of rock wraps around the slide to create the waterfall and grotto. “The experience of swimming through a waterfall and ending up in a cave is magical — the feeling is intoxicating and relaxing,” conveys Congdon. Water from a luxurious hot tub spills over the rocks and splashes into the pool like a natural spring.

“This home has southern charm you can’t find anywhere else in Southwest Florida,” rejoices Johnson. It’s a cozy, tropical getaway worthy of its moniker, the “hidden gem.” n

Rear Elevation: Lucas Lagoons places a Tennessee field stone stepping path that draws the eye to a feature where four up-lit palms with low-lying vegetation set a tropical mood. Interlocking Tremron retaining blocks create the fire pit structure, also designed by Lucas Lagoons, with seats in the same coping as the pool. The black steel lanterns from Wilson Lighting tie into the black window frames of the house and add to its rustic charm. Lanai: “Out here we wanted to adopt the feel of an indoor living space, and so we added plenty of comfortable seating and a cozy area rug,” states Thies. The same wood-like tile floor from DeMarco Tile runs across this space and down the country-style porches for continuity. Large roll-down screens extend from the underside of the arched opening. Jallad adds, “We increased the heel on the curved truss to incorporate the tall roll-down screen system.”

71

Rear Elevation & Aerial: The natural-green fronds of the palms are a stunning contrast to the vibrant artificial turf and putting green, while blooming red bromeliads and flowers in rosy hues complement the lush landscape from Potter Homes. Congdon elicits a fresh water color in the pool waters by using a natural French Grey Pebble Sheen interior finish from PebbleTec. “That color brings in deep blue tones that are so refreshing that it draws you right in,” says Congdon. Twelve truckloads of native Florida limestone form the massive retaining wall that separates the recreational yard from the Cocohatchee River.

ALL THAT GLITTERS GRANDEUR, REFINEMENT, AND BLING MAKE THIS WATERFRONT NAPLES HOME TRULY SHINE

Front Elevation: No matter whether it’s labeled transitional or soft contemporary with a tropical twist, all will agree that the front elevation of the home is remarkable. Awning louvers hang above the balcony, garage, and the full-height windows — from Andersen Windows & Doors, installed by Florida Wood Window & Door — which all contribute to the tropical influence. “I always try to pop the entry and make it a pronounced part of the front elevation,” says Cooney, who used tall vertical plasters and a stair tower leading to a stately mahogany door. “Right away you’re drawn to it and know just where to go.” Andrea also did his part to make things more inviting by using abundant shrubbery, planting varietal palms in varying heights, and inlaying grass within the motor court. “It connects the landscape to the structure and acts as a welcome mat,” he remarks. Rear Elevation: Boaters passing by on the canal take pause at the remarkable rear elevation of this home. It’s the result of a seamless team effort by all parties and gives the homeowners the vast outdoor living space they desire. Andrea’s landscape architecture features a pool with vanishing edge and a strategically placed sun shelf — outfitted with Ledge Lounger chaises — to maximize the views. Fire bowls are placed on either side of the chaises to add ambiance day or night. Cooney incorporates vast expanses of glass into his architectural plan, so the Andersen windows from Florida Wood Window & Door create an impressive sight looking in or out. Sorrentino filled the summer kitchen, outdoor living room, and huge deck with a mix of woven resin and aluminum patio furnishings from Summer Classics, Kingsley Bates, and Sunset West — with gorgeous outdoor fabrics by Sunbrella. And, of course, STOCK Custom Homes built it all to perfection.

S

Set within the luxury community of Park Shore, this two-story home has five bedrooms and is a sight to behold whether one is strolling through Venetian Village or boating on picturesque Venetian Bay. Lead Designer Natalie Sorrentino creates exquisite spaces with tasteful transitional style using a neutral palette of taupe, cool gray, and a splash of spa blue. Expertly constructed by Naples-based luxury homebuilder STOCK Custom Homes for a family who also owns condos in South Carolina and elsewhere in Florida, this home is now the family’s primary residence. The project shines in more than one sense of the word. “The wife used the word glittery often in our design conversations, so we included lots of polished chrome, iridescent finishes, and sparkling light fixtures throughout to achieve that ‘bling’ she loves,” Sorrentino recounts. Since the home is located in a flood zone, a specific minimum elevation of the finished floor is required. “We are dealt the codes, which some may view as a negative, but in my office, I have a motto: ‘We like to turn lemons into lemonade,’” remarks John Cooney of Stofft Cooney Architects, who was the architect on this project. “So, we embraced the vertical height and accentuated it throughout the architecture.” This positive attitude is unanimous among the team. “The house sits high and proud, giving it the illusion of three stories although there’s only two,” proclaims Sorrentino. This sense of grandeur allowed the players involved to really flex their collective creative muscles. “The first level has nice height with 12-foot ceilings, and in the bedrooms on the second floor, we vaulted and trayed up into the ceilings to create volume,” explains Cooney. “And with so much glass, an abundance of natural light filters in throughout the open plan, so it’s very pleasing in that regard. There’s not a dark room in this house.” Landscape Architect Christian Andrea — owner of Architectural Land Design — incorporates plentiful greenery all around the property to add to the topical hues. “The style of the residence lends itself to our tropical setting,” he explains. u

Entry: Upon strolling into the entry via a large-scale custom door with clear glass insets, a transition into soft contemporary takes place. European oak wide plank flooring from Hadinger Flooring covers the floors, while a complementary pecan tone is used to finish the stair treads and rails. Overhead, Nuevo’s polished chrome Yves pendant sets the home’s sparkle in motion. Also in view is the dining room, where a striking pair of Regina Andrew antique mercury chandeliers hang above the taupeglazed Bradford dining table and Bailey chairs, both by Vanguard Furniture. Living Room: The living room becomes a livable showplace where quiet elegance is amped with sparkle and shine — in keeping with the wife’s desired aesthetic. The focal wall exhibits Sorrentino’s custom design — a streamlined fireplace set within straight-cut porcelain emulating travertine, and a TV tucked into a niche for a clean look. Thick floating shelves are backed with mirrors that reflect a symmetrical furniture arrangement; the cocktail table has a strong presence in the center and the seating surrounding it is plentiful. A pair of cream chenille swivel chairs face two Vanguard barrel-back loungers upholstered in a whisper of spa blue. A plush taupe rug from Stanton lies underfoot, and a Hudson Valley Chambers chandelier — boasting tapered candles balanced atop a gleaming polished nickel ring — shimmers overhead. Just beyond the staircase, the clients’ own piano brings a melodic personal touch to the scene.

The kitchen is equipped with high-end appliances from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Matte cream transitional style cabinets by Ruffino Cabinetry frame the space while a glass mosaic tile backsplash adds dimension and iridescence in cool gray with a hint of blue. Visual Comfort’s polished nickel Presidio Linear Lantern hangs above a clean-cut island topped with Tuscany Pompeii Quartz, which is flanked by four Bernhardt counter stools upholstered in a striated taupe and cream fabric. Seating for eight is provided by way of a wood table and upholstered chairs from Bernhardt, and the breakfast scene is lit by the gleaming George Kovacs polished chrome pendant. To add a touch of softness to this space, the glass sliders are treated with stationary drapes, using a Camengo off-white and taupe faux silk.

Master Bedroom: The master bedroom is imbued with elegant and glamourous appointments. Vanguard’s channel-tufted Kelsey king bed, fully upholstered in Tiwanna Sand linen, is dressed with an assortment of refined neutral textiles. A Bernhardt Laguna bench with polished chrome and glass legs dons a cotton taupe cushion that sits at the foot of the bed. Both are set atop an abstract silk rug by Surya that features a subtle blend of taupe, white, and cream. On either side, mirrored chests with glass knobs bring star quality that’s made that much more powerful with a pair of Regina Andrew Odessa crystal table lamps. The room’s sitting area is furnished with two velvet upholstered swivel chairs. Finishing off the space are two unique pieces — a strong yet delicate silver leaf Currey & Company glass beaded chandelier, and a kinetic canvas. Master Bathroom: Bright and elegant, the master bath showcases luxurious materials from Hadinger Flooring. Tesoro Altezza Carrara Matte graces the shower walls and the floors, which also feature inlaid Glazzio Divine Windows Gaelic Kirk mosaic. Understated wood cabinetry fabricated by Ruffino Cabinetry is dressed up with polished nickel hardware and lighting. An Interlude Home lucite counter stool interplays with Regina Andrew silk-shaded wall sconces, and boasts complementary lucite accents for a touch of glamour and translucence.

Loft: The loft is designed for pure enjoyment; it includes a wet bar and a furniture setup for entertaining that includes a Bernhardt Kelsey Sectional upholstered in taupe linen, a cocktail ottoman swathed in a muted graphic pattern of gray and cream, and a Bernhardt Luca Entertainment Credenza — featuring two-toned wood and distinctive bronze metal hardware — giving this space special character. When it’s game time, a brushed nickel chandelier from Hinkley Lighting shines down on a Lexington Furniture wood table that has crisscross supports underneath a gray-painted tabletop that complements the light gray cotton fabric seen in the set of four Hooker chairs.

The home’s style name is up for discussion. The exterior palette, with features like a compound roof, louvers and brackets, and a tongue-andgroove ceiling on the lanai are unarguably West Indies inspired. The interior is decidedly streamlined — it leans more toward transitional. According to Matt Sellick, president of STOCK Custom Homes, it’s best to defer to the architect on this one. “It’s soft contemporary with a tropical twist,” declares Cooney. When all is said and done, it’s a happy client that matters most. “We take the desires of our customer, take direction on how they want things done, and go for it —- always taking the greatest of pride in our craftsmanship,” says Sellick. And this home is one worth flaunting — just as people do with their bijouterie. n This home was sold by Stan Whitcomb | The Whitcomb Group at Premier Plus Realty.

Guest Bedroom: Unarguably the standout of the VIP guest bedroom, ELK Lighting’s massive polished nickel starburst chandelier sparkles beneath the vaulted ceiling from which it’s suspended. It doubles as an eyecatcher for those on the outside looking in. Decorative bedding from Matouk dresses the Avery bed from Bernhardt that faces a lacquered Zeitgeist dresser by Artistica Home. The linen drapes utilize Fabricut’s Skara pattern in ivory and give way to an iron-railed balcony and a gorgeous view of Venetian Village. A woven accent chair, a small Surya shapely table, and Arteriors’ glazed porcelain Amy table lamp finish this space with an added touch of class. Guest Bathroom: This bath is designed to make guests feel like VIPs. The straight-cut Nautilus porcelain tile flooring — which emulates travertine — is lain staggered by Hadinger Flooring to the designer’s specifications for added interest. Built-in shelving from Ruffino Cabinetry puts neatly stacked clean towels close at hand when emerging from the glass-enclosed shower. The vanity — finished in cool gray and also from Ruffino Cabinetry — is adorned by slender polished nickel pulls, and the matching ring-door pulls find their doppelgängers in the wall sconces. Two white porcelain countertop vessel sinks from Mirabelle are accompanied by extra tall polished chrome faucets. A showstopping Scalamandre cork wallpaper with silver leaf accents graces the vanity wall.

This West Indies home by Stofft Cooney Architects, finished in a welcoming, warm white paint and vertical stone cladding, is an elegant, brightly lit masterpiece. Natural light streams in through the large, two-story-high windows from Andersen Windows & Doors sourced through Naples Lumber, through which a large, crystal chandelier in the stairwell can be seen. A plethora of intricate detailing can be seen in the Caribbeanstyle railing, the mahogany carriage-style garage doors, and the mutton patterns that expertly provide blissful balance.

BLISSFUL BALANCE EXPERT DESIGN ACHIEVES A BALANCE OF FEMININITY AND MASCULINITY THROUGHOUT THIS HOME homeanddesign.net

111

L

Lana Knapp, senior interior designer with Collins DuPont Design Group, melds delicate curves and geometric forms to marry the his-and-her influences of these delightful homeowners. “I chose a neutral color palette of warm whites, gray, and taupe with accents in silver, gold, and copper, while using rich dark woods for a striking contrast,” says Knapp — creating a balance of feminine allure and masculine appeal in this design. Architect John Cooney of Stofft Cooney Architects designs a West Indies style home with modern-day influences by illuminating the soffits that accentuate the columns and architectural details. Though this home is brimming with West Indies characteristics, the contemporary streamlining of the hip roofs, the white paint, and the vertical stone cladding allude to the transitional interior. u

Family Room: Silver and gold accent this warm white neutral palette. The off-white wool rug from Stanton Carpets features a raised pattern in a gentle curve, juxtaposed by the rectilinear shape on the custom wood built-in by Borelli Construction. Capiz shell table lamps rest atop the two end tables where Knapp opts to mix and match a square table by Hickory Chair in java and an oval table by Baker in chocolate mink. The chandelier in an antique silver with pearlized threads from John-Richard glimmers from all angles, adding a softness to the design like the tone-on-tone sheers. Staircase: “I intentionally used a balustrade with a geometric design for a masculine presence,” Knapp says, “then painted it white for a feminine appeal.” By using a dark walnut wood and stain on the treads with matching handrail, the high-contrast style of the living and dining room is amplified. “The stair wall is very simple but sophisticated,” says Cooney. “The panels that climb two stories create a breathtaking architectural moment in the house” and draw the eye upward to the spectacular hand-cut beveled crystal chandelier from Fine Art. homeanddesign.net

113

Ideal for the homeowners’ frequent entertaining, the living, dining, wet bar, breakfast room, and kitchen are ample and open. Parker Borelli of Borelli Construction of Naples describes this home as an open concept that still has connections between the spaces. Knapp embellishes the ceilings with rectilinear forms to define rooms using geometric lines that draw in a masculine touch. Inversely, Knapp employs the same ceiling treatment in the kitchen and breakfast room to unify these spaces by traversing and overlapping the beam design. Knapp’s overwhelming commitment to the design concept brings balance to this stunning home. During construction, Borelli transitions to a day-today role. “We get everything right during the rough-in phase, so when the home is complete, it is exactly as it should be. Everything is purposeful!” says Borelli. Graceful curves on the dining room chairs echo in the hand-cut glass petals on the chandelier, while Knapp dials down the color saturation in the wet bar and adds rugged expression with the alligator-embossed leather seen on the bar stools — the perfect balance of his and hers. Classic styling and tranquility flow into the master suite, and outside to the unique pool and lush tropical vista. u

Kitchen: Knapp selects a warm white on the cabinets from Borelli Construction, and she chooses a semi-opaque glass for the upper cabinets — for an airy look and to provide much-needed storage space. The backsplash from Ruben Sorhegui Tile is a gentle, intertwining pattern done in a Carrara marble set in a white-on-white Thassos backdrop. Knapp imbues this bright space with warmth using wood accents on the custom bleached walnut hood with polished nickel banding and in the wood branch decor. For sound dampening, fabric cornice boards and flowing drapery fill the breakfast area. Dining Room: Knapp brings in an ample-sized dining table in a deep chocolate lacquer finish from Century Furniture and surrounds it with graceful chairs upholstered in a tightly woven, neutral fabric from Hickory White. Overhead, the delicate chandelier from Fine Art radiates with a feminine glow, while at the wet bar, cocoa brown, alligator-embossed, swivel bar stools with a paint and glaze finish from Hickory Chair exude masculinity. This swanky wet bar has a unique geometric ceiling in walnut, trimmed with stainless steel and a stunning antique, beveled mirror mosaic niche to bring in a little glamour.

Master Bedroom: The attractive tray ceiling conceals the duct work while highlighting the polished nickel chandelier from Visual Comfort. Knapp adds glamorous touches with pillow shams in a soothing, natural taupe fabric, embroidered with pearls and metallic thread. The oversized chairs from Century Furniture with a platinum finish create a quiet nook for looking out over the pool and the vibrant fuchsia flowers beyond. By varying the window treatments, this sanctuary imbues class. Master Bathroom: With purposeful shelving on either side of the graceful soaking tub from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, Knapp selects an elegant waterfall chandelier from Visual Comfort to soften the solid surfaces. Lining the walls with this neutral, freeform print wallpaper from York Wallcoverings, Knapp chooses it to appeal to the his-and-her theme seen throughout the rest of the home. This Apuano Calacatta Marble countertop is a vision in cloud white and swirls of smoke gray and rests atop the cabinets finished in white with a very light gray glaze that reveals the ogee-style tooling.

The his-and-her office doubles as a relaxing den where the household enjoys congregating. Knapp spins a design in this space with a neutral color palette for the man of the house. Nearby the powder bath exudes a gentle femininity, yet still strikes a balance with subtle, geometric lines. “I believe the entire team rallied around the theme, and what the clients were looking for,” shares Cooney. “The end result is an elegant West Indies piece of architecture that has a contemporary twist.” This home exemplifies tropical inspiration with a design that is the perfect balance of brawny sophistication and grace. n Den: A caramel color wallpaper fills this sophisticated coffer ceiling. Knapp pulls in this Hickory Chair desk in a light portobello, and behind it she constructs a custom dark wood built-in. A soft area rug from Stark contrasts the European Elegance wood flooring in Geneva from Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring, installed by Naples Flooring Company. Knapp creates a delightful sitting area by the window with two cream chairs from Century Furniture and surrounds them with tape-accented drapery in tan, silver, beige, and gray. Hall Bath: Stainless-steel inlay forms the geometric pattern on the white and gray wall mosaic from Ruben Sorhegui Tile. The Fine Art pendants in a heavy, beveled crystal complement the cut-crystal vessel sink from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. “For the custom vanity, I chose to use a mirror inlay with a moulding design that echoes the lines of the stone and mirrored mosaic tile’s simulating fretwork,” delights Knapp, describing the EuroCraft Cabinetry vanity. 118

Loft: Since this loft overlooks the pool, Knapp creates a coastal theme in this casual space. She fills it with soft blues seen in the Nourison area rug and the Century Furniture sofa, upon which velvet tie-dye pillows in deeper blues add a delightful contrast. Knapp adds to the coastal palette with a shell-encrusted box from Collins Dupont Design Group that she expertly places on the grayed-oak cocktail table from Century Furniture. Guest Bedroom: “When a guest walks into the VIP suite, I want them to feel immersed in a tropical vacation setting along with being very welcomed,” says Knapp, who creates this invigorating space full of palm prints, rich emerald greens, and sandy hues. Sliced emerald green agate artwork hangs above the bed, while a custom-sized, clover-shaped ottoman with embossed leather and a wood base from Century Furniture is nestled between two swivel chairs. With an eyelash quality, the light tan embroidery on the off-white drapery is dimensional, framing the vacation-style view while complementing the natural hues found in the bedding.

Outdoor Living: The Century Furniture seating is fully upholstered in Sunbrella fabric — Knapp explains that it is functional for this outdoor living space and carries the inside outdoors. This dainty travertine top end table with an intertwining oval base from Summer Classics balances the heavy etched stone cocktail table from Bernhardt. The mixed-material fireplace features a stacked stone and a porcelain tile with a wooden appearance that complements the rich tongue-and-groove ceiling. Rear Elevation: Featuring a foliage island with three graceful palms, this marvelous pool wraps around the outdoor living space. Vibrant flowers that flank the stepping stones provide a beautiful transition from the master suite to the outdoors and to the sunning deck where regal uplit palm trees surround the sunning deck. Knapp selects rattan-like resin seating for the lounge space around the fire pit that rests atop the floating shellstone tile deck from Ruben Sorhegui Tile.

CONTEMPORARY CLASSIC

A VINTAGE ARCHITECTURAL STYLE BORN IN THE OLD SOUTH GETS A REBIRTH IN NAPLES

I

Independent developer Michelle Koch knew that she wanted something different when she built her latest spec home in Naples. “No more coastal contemporary or West Indies style,” she declares. “I wanted something entirely new, and I picked the perfect architect for the job.” Robert Mongillo, Principal of JMDG Architecture | Planning + Interiors has worked with Koch before, so he knew she would come to the table brimming with great ideas. He wasn’t disappointed. “Michelle always has a vision,” he says. “We are very good at listening to one another during the design process.” What the two came up with was a lowcountry-influenced home, hearkening back to Koch’s own upbringing in South Carolina. Airy, spacious rooms and a large shade porch are distinctive features of such an architectural style, as the original lowcountry homes were designed to offset the heat and humidity of marshy climates while evoking the very best of southern hospitality. u 132

Front Elevation: Red brick pavers lead to the triple car garage and welcoming columned front porch of this four-bedroom, four-anda-half-bath residence in Pelican Bay. A trio of dormer windows and an iron and glass transom door by Andersen Windows & Doors — installed by Florida Wood Window & Door — help set the style of this lowcountry-influenced home. Porch Swing: Luna — canine companion of Interior Designer Molly Hoover, and her “best employee” at Molly Hoover Design Group — poses in front of one of the most popular features at showings. This wooden porch swing is supported by ropes and cushioned in stark white outdoor linen.

Mongillo, who has been designing show-stopping homes since 1991, knew the triple dormer windows were also befitting, but they proved both an advantage and a challenge. “The windows provide wonderful natural light, but getting them just right was difficult,” he says. “I had to put a horizontal gable and tie it into the roof while keeping the whole look very clean. The front elevation is the part of the design of which I am the most pleased.” But Mongillo isn’t only about the beauty of his designs. He is also interested in the livability of the home. “Certain features we did really set the house apart,” he says. “For example, I made a secret door from the master bedroom’s walk-in closet to the utility room, so the homeowner doesn’t have to lug laundry across the home to the laundry room.” Mongillo continues to say that “such functionality is one aspect of thoughtful design.” He knew he had succeeded by the comments he received. “Even the contractor congratulated me on a job well done, and Michelle is delighted with how the house turned out.” Koch also had the perfect interior designer in mind, one with whom she had worked so successfully before — Molly Hoover of Molly Hoover Design Group. Hoover put her years of experience to work by envisioning and creating an all-American classic with a nod to the vintage, but with a fresh feel. “Everything had to be grounded in great design,” says Hoover. “Our aesthetic is always about creating a home that is totally livable and functional, but beautiful too.” u

134

homeanddesign.net

Family Room: The ceiling in the family room is 16.5 feet high and, in a dazzling feat of architectural prowess, the middle beam runs in a perfectly symmetrical line to the kitchen. “That required great precision on my part,” says Mongillo. Kitchen: Keeping with Koch’s desire to have “a place for everything,” there is an abundance of storage in this stylish kitchen, including a built-in coffee station, spice racks, double dishwashers, and an ice maker. Vintage-style pendants hang above the marble-top island that reflect the overhead light. Wolf/Sub-Zero appliances and a hidden butler’s pantry add functionality to the space.

homeanddesign.net

135

136

homeanddesign.net

The team succeeded in that mission. The home sold for a record-breaking price per square foot for a non-waterfront property in Pelican Bay. Hoover was not surprised because during construction people flocked to the site. “Pelican Bay is a walking neighborhood,” says Hoover, “and every day during construction, we had people clamoring to get a look inside.” Such attention is understandable. From the moment you enter this beautiful home through the weighty, black iron and glass door, you know care was taken at every turn. Greeted by a two-story entryway that is flooded with natural light, the eye is drawn to the stunning woodwork displayed everywhere. Attention to detail is evident throughout the home. As you meander into the 16.5-foot vaulted great room, the cozy neutral furnishings beckon you to stay awhile. One compelling feature is the oversized kitchen island that seats five, a must-have feature for developer Michelle Koch, wife and mother of three active teenage boys. “I build homes that I can see my family living in,” says Koch. “The house has to be livable, not just a showpiece.” This idea fits perfectly with Molly Hoover Design Group and their basic philosophy. “A home must be personal and comfortable. Form and function must be in balance,” explains Hoover. u

Dining Room: Seating for eight is found at the 72-inch round Hickory White table set on random-sized plank white oak flooring by ProFloors & Cabinets. The fabric chairs are framed with hickory that help keep hands from soiling the upholstery. A round Hudson Valley Lighting chandelier overhead sheds soft light. Den: Wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries in a geometric print adds to the neutral palette of this intimate den. A freestanding Hickory White desk stands in front of a custom matte black and crystal cabinet, featuring a printer pullout and hidden cord storage. Glass doorknobs add a touch of elegance here and throughout the home. Hallway: Spontaneous inspiration by Fogelman turned a long, unadorned hallway into a cozy niche. Borrowing space from outdoor storage on the other side of the wall, floating shelves mounted on the spring green grasscloth-covered nook hold antiques and photos of Naples.

Master Bedroom: A vast picture window provides a treehouse feel to this master bedroom. Spring grasscloth wallpaper adds a lovely background for the pop of Koch’s favorite shade of purple, seen in a Wendover art print above a Gabby Home Furniture headboard that moves to create the perfect pitch for sitting up to read. A Wesley Hall bench and chair add additional seating, while Global Views lamps with illuminated bases sit atop the Vanguard’s “Make It Yours” nightstands that flank the bed. The linen panel drapes, bordered with sage Greek keys, can be drawn against the night. Master Bathroom: The black Victoria + Albert tub serves as the inspiration for this master bath. “I fell in love at first sight with it, and we built the room around it,” says Koch. There’s a contemporary take on a classic look with black-and-white-marble-basket weave underfoot. A Regina Andrew glass bubble chandelier lights the solid crystal pedestal table. Plantation shutters by Shutter Concepts filter the natural light in this expansive space. The encased glass shower includes large-format dolomite tile, and a solid slab of quartz hosts vintage glass and chrome sconces above matching trough sinks.

This project was not the first for this creative team. Because they work so well together, the creators of this special project were in sync from the moment Koch presented her inspiration photo — a home she admired in Minnesota — to the finishing design touches, which brought the home to life. “I could rely on my contractor, Joe Sullivan, my interior designer, Molly Hoover of Molly Hoover Design Group, and her construction manager, Dana Fogelman, to be the eyes of the project when I was off site,” says Koch. Despite challenges caused by pandemic slowdowns, when the team gathered around the fire table on the final day to raise a celebratory glass, they knew that they had collaborated well and pulled the project off. “We toasted each other on creating a classic and timeless, yet truly unique, home and one of which we are very proud,” says Hoover. n

Guest Room (Above): Upon entering this guest room, the eye first captures the unique basket-woven twin mirrors that seemingly float above the headboard. The sheer linen Schumacher fabric of the window treatments complement the navy blue grasscloth wallcovering, and the geometric ceramic lamps in navy and cream sit atop contrasting ivory nightstands, giving this space the finishing touches it deserves. Guest Room (Left): Custom-framed, antique nautical military flags adorn the clean white walls of this guest room. The blackframed bed adds contrast to the natural finish of the Vanguard Furniture nightstand, which complements the rope detailing in the Palecek chair. A blue Dash & Albert rug is soft underfoot and adds additional contrast.

To transform this home from traditional to contemporary, architect John Cooney of Stofft Cooney Architects increases the window and door openings with selections from Andersen Windows & Doors, from Florida Wood Window & Door. The bronze door and window frames stand out delightfully against the white paint with gray undertones while the landscaping, by Architectural Land Design, softens the home’s angles. The sleek, low-profile aluminum roof fits perfectly with this contemporary design, while the team revisualizes many other aspects. Stripping the columns of their traditional elements, Cooney adds reveals at the tops and bottoms to give the illusion that they are floating. The wood-clad garage door now features frosted glass panels. By eliminating the hip roof and replacing it with a glass rail balcony, the contemporary design comes alive. 156

SYNERGETIC STYLE STUNNING TRADITIONAL DESIGN IS TRANSFORMED INTO A SLEEK CONTEMPORARY WATERFRONT HAVEN

O

One would naturally assume that this fantastic, contemporary creation was the plan from the start, but that is not the case. The homeowners quickly found themselves desiring a more contemporary design. So, when the call came in to change the architectural style of this Naples home after construction was already underway, architect John Cooney of Stofft Cooney Architects and this team transformed this once traditional design into an edgy, contemporary home on the water. Owner of The Williams Group and builder, Joe Beauchamp, contacted interior designer Shawn Kronen of Kronen Design, who had the right flair to take this traditional style and transform it into a contemporary masterpiece front-to-back. u

Living Room: Mixed materials, shapes, lines, and forms from ceiling to floor define this living space. Cooney and Kronen work closely on the details to echo the rectilinear forms, pairing the indirectly lit ceiling design with the mirror-and-glass chandelier. Rich walnut doors add warmth to the palette. In a room with a lot of circulation, Kronen selects furniture pieces with visual interest. Bold pops of color bounce from the vibrant kaleidoscopic artwork to the throw pillows, casting your eye out through the large wall of glass to the marina. Entry: The curvilinear, custom staircase blurs the line between art and form. A special hand-applied Venetian plaster with mica flecks climbs the wall for a spectacular sparkling show as you ascend and descend the staircase. Your eye is also caught by the glass-and-gunmetal chandelier from Naples Lamp Shop. Galvanized sconces from a gallery in New York carry the curves, while below, a deep-toned, contemporary console rests atop the warm white and taupe bronze granite floor.

Kitchen: An expansive cocktail bar boasts a walnut butcher-block top, contrasting the white lacquer cabinets that tie in with the main kitchen. A smoke-gray mirror backsplash runs up through the back of the glass display cabinets that reflects the sparkle from the custom Murano glass pieces in the chandelier. Swanky, metallic tiles flank the coffee bar, connecting with the custom hood and window frames. Floor-to-ceiling glass encases this futuristic wine room that holds the bottles with a ring-and-cable suspension system. It is lit overhead by LED lights that cast varying colors over the bottles as well as the cristallo-stone backdrop.

“It is a fact that when you’re designing for a contemporary piece of architecture that there be almost a void of detail, so you have to make the details impactful,” Cooney explains. By widening the doors and windows — including a backlit, frosted glass garage door and a lit entry stair — the home that already had great massing and proportions began to embody a contemporary style. Cooney alters the roofline and adds a glass-front balcony, infusing this architecture with strong, clean lines. “This house had a very different look when we started,” shares Beauchamp, “but in the end, everything came together in one seamless and outstanding design.” Kronen, who has a deep respect for the architecture, lends his design talents to the project — from the architectural finishes to the landscaping design elements. “The indoor and outdoor environments become one big living space that requires a cohesive design,” states Kronen. Natural light flows through the full-height windows on the front of the home, highlighting the curved staircase in the entry that Kronen explains is “sculptural, and inspired the curves throughout the home that are in juxtaposition to the geometry of the architecture.” The sleek, minimalistic ceilings serve as a backdrop to the interior design. Kronen mixes materials throughout the space, building a spectacularly stunning contemporary palette that is both whimsical and lavish. By considering every angle and every perspective, Kronen wields a design that is truly synergetic. u

Master Bedroom: The fireplace — clad in a soft-tone, handmade tile — is nestled strategically into the layered wall underneath the mounted television. A geometric tile pattern on the laser-cut, hand-finished screen is powder coated and reveals the drapery behind it for an impressive layered effect. A dramatic, crystal pendant from Naples Lamp Shop cascades down the front of the window, creating a waterfall effect. Kronen fashions a relaxing corner with a custom chaise by Kronen Design, placing a metallic stool beside it with a unique shape that rivals the ripples in the water. Master Bathroom: “A typical ceiling would be a tray, but since this is not your typical house, we added architectural elements called cloud ceilings,” delights Cooney, who continues to say that “they actually drop lower than the ceiling and seem to float.” This walnut-clad cloud ceiling offers prominence to the soaking tub from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. The cabinets, with a swirly, Arizona Shadow quartzite countertop cantilever over a bed of river rock. The wall plaster offers a soothing, muted hue to this calming space.

The outdoor living space boasts a pool that flows over an infinity edge and down to the dock, displaying a majestic view of the water. The emphasis on each facet connecting to the next makes the outdoor experience an impressive sight to gaze upon as you arrive by boat — an aspect deeply important to these homeowners who chose this location for its proximity to the marina. u

Office: “The beam ceiling is a nod to a more traditional design, bringing a classic element to the office while maintaining its modernity,” shares Kronen. With perfect placement, Kronen selects a 1960s Knoll-inspired table so the homeowner can capitalize on all the views. Under the large, open windows from Andersen Windows, from Florida Wood Window & Door, Kronen designs a deep window seat that can double as a daybed or gazing space. Loft: Geometric and fluid forms fill this upstairs loft. Billowy, lavish-green, canaryyellow, and violet shapes in the custom, poured-resin art above the sofa is “truly the star of the loft,” delights Kronen. The custom geometric screen encloses the space with style. Kronen places this free-form, faux silver leaf coffee table atop the soft and silvery rug to add synergy to the space.

Thankfully, this back-to-the-drawing-board notion is a fun exercise for the team, whose experience in both building and design makes them well suited to roll with the punches and finish the job on time and on budget. Intention is the undercurrent that flows through this project — every piece, color, accent, and layout, from the entry door to the dock fit together flawlessly to create this synergetic, contemporary design. n

Guest Bedroom: Chosen for its sleek, uniform properties, this premium white oak flooring runs throughout the home. Above the lounging chaise, Cooney designs this asymmetrical tray with a shadow-line around it, giving the ceiling a floating effect. Full-height draperies add a lively rhythm, while playful shapes and vibrant cool blues and soft teals lead the eye around the room. This room’s whimsical spirit influences color choices throughout the home. Guest Bathroom: The square window on the vanity wall creates a design challenge for Kronen, yet he deftly creates a stunning, symmetrical elevation with illuminated mirrors and also places the faucets off to the side of their squared basins. This creamy countertop lightens the clean-line, deep-tone vanity. With a linear, straight stack on the glass tile backsplash, Kronen pulls organic forms in with the silver-to-white, tie-dye stripe wallcovering.

Rear Elevation | Outdoor Living: With a conscious effort to deviate from the norm, Cooney designs this contemporary exterior with punched-rectangular openings to allow for natural light. “This is another element of the architecture that adds to the unique and contemporary design,” says Cooney. This outdoor living space features a curved bar, full kitchen with all new appliances, beautiful outdoor cabinets by Ruffino Cabinetry in a cypress finish, motorized insect screens from Castle Services of Southwest Florida, and lush foliage by Architectural Land Design. The porcelain tile deck is a floating system that allows rainwater to drain to a pan below. With a color palette of deep lagoon, this rich and inviting spot is a destination retreat from inside the home or from the water.

In this highly coveted Naples community of Pine Ridge Estates, the lots are generous — none under an acre. “This is not a house we have ever built before,” relishes the Director of Residential Construction at McGarvey Custom Homes, Jennifer McGarvey Burch. Residential Designer Richard Guzman of R.G. Designs creates a unique floor plan specifically for this lot. “The house design would normally be front to back, but we angled it to achieve the beautiful view of the lake,” shares Guzman. u

Foyer | Stairs: The dark charcoal, solid sapele wood entry door opens into the foyer that steals your breath away with this lighter-than-air custom staircase. A single beam runs down the center, cradling the white oak treads that match the glass and white oak railing caps by McGarvey Custom Homes. Deconstructed, tropical artwork climbs the wall of this two-story space, adding a touch of the tropics to this high-contrast contemporary design. Front Elevation: Landscape Designer Christian Andrea of Architectural Land Design selects foliage with varying heights to create a delightful composition of leafy green that softens this architecture while palm trees line this meandering driveway. The lush, central roundabout greets you at the end of the arcing, taupe and charcoal stone drive from TriCircle Pavers. A weathered ash slate roof rests atop this clean exterior in Sherwin-Williams Alpaca with trim in Toque White and a Dusty Grey accent on the shutters. Great Room (previous spread): An ebony-stained white oak built-in surrounds the polished mushroom hue porcelain tile on the fireplace, and this deep earthy tone repeats on the bar in the lounge, where Lead Interior Designer Arlynn McDaniel of Freestyle Interiors creates a striking art wall of wine bottles that rest in a stainless-steel rack. Clean white fabrics and chrome feet adorn these supple and durable recliners from Hancock & Moore, while other notable pieces like the acrylic base stool and see-through cocktail table lend a weightless feel to this design.

This house sits approximately 200 feet from the road. Project Manager Ben McGarvey of McGarvey Custom Homes shares, “We situated the house toward the rear of the lot for privacy, and that gave us the ability to create this grand, winding driveway toward this estatestyle home.” Against a clean and cool contemporary exterior, Landscape Designer Christian Andrea of Architectural Land Design blends coconut and foxtail palms with mid-canopy ligustrum trees and low-lying copper leaf plants for pops of color — all to honor the tropical lake environment. Andrea places an outlying fire pit deck where this peaceful lot touches the lake. u

Kitchen: This airy, high-gloss kitchen shows off McDaniel’s fearless design talent. “I’m the type of designer that with each project I do, I want to do something a little bit different,” shares McDaniel, who purposefully leaves the chrome handles off of the back wall to preserve the clean aesthetic on the white cabinets from McGarvey Custom Homes’ cabinetry division Southlinks Custom Cabinetry. The satin nickel on the high-end Sub-Zero refrigerator repeats on the backs of the modern counter stools from Elite Manufacturing that McDaniel dresses in a softer hue, making them feel more contemporary. Dining Room: McDaniel structures a custom ebony shelf detail around abstract art pieces from Art Classics — adding pinpoint lights to highlight the dashes of turquoise, taupe, and midnight black in the art and décor. High contrast between the white Arabescato Pompeii quartz countertop and the deep tone cabinets from Southlinks Custom Cabinetry is an invert of the adjacent kitchen color scheme. This sleek chandelier carries the curvilinear forms that McDaniel uses to soften the strong lines of the architectural detailing.

“We love creating homes that are comfortable for family and friends, and in this home, we infused warmth into the clean lines of the contemporary design,” shares Faith Fix, owner of Freestyle Interiors. Lead Interior Designer of Freestyle Interiors Arlynn McDaniel casts an inviting feel over this home by incorporating high-contrast and high-impact touches. With a backdrop of soothing gray hues and glistening chrome accents, McDaniel adds pops of turquoise and aqua to tie in the lake-life experience with this stunning interior. “We wanted large gathering spaces throughout the home, and we achieved that all over — from the great upstairs bonus room to the open great room, and to the outdoor living,” shares Burch. Typically, McDaniel designs the furniture layouts first and then tackles the ceiling plan, but for this open concept on the main floor, McDaniel starts with the creation of this hybrid ceiling design. “I love the architectural aspect of designing a house because it can really create a lot of ambiance for the home,” declares McDaniel. These unique ceiling treatments bridge the open spaces and create cohesiveness throughout the home. High-impact features, such as the airy glass staircase and the geometric custom ceiling designs are in harmony with such intricate details as the artistic built-ins. McDaniel works side by side with McGarvey Custom Homes’ in-house cabinetry company to design these artistic niches. This strong connection between custom home builder and a fully functioning wood shop ensures that everything can be custom built to any design. The cumulative skills and talents of this dedicated builder and the designers are what make this luxury home an inviting lakeside contemporary design. n

Master Bedroom: Guzman designs a magnificent master bedroom with wrap-around lake views through these floor-toceiling windows. On a motorized system, these translucent, silvery gray draperies from Fabricut — custom made locally — fill the space with a delightful, romantic atmosphere. McDaniel designs this luxurious bed and provides her drawings to Southlinks Custom Cabinetry, who create this magnificent white oak with ebony stain bed, housing a hidden television that rises out of the footboard and swivels. Master Bathroom: McDaniel embraces geometric tile shapes to tie this master bathroom and morning kitchen together. Above the morning kitchen hangs a custom shelf detail similar to the dining room, yet here it is done in a gray laminate to match the cabinets below and on the vanity from Southlinks Custom Cabinetry. A soothing gray and silky silver tone vinyl wallcovering lines the space. McDaniel selects this tapered tub from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, and to break up the lines, she chooses this angular, white glass pendant. homeanddesign.net

Lanai: Carrying the theme to the outdoors, McDaniel uses a cloud ceiling design on this lanai. Tape lighting where dark meets light creates a dynamic layered effect. This outdoor kitchen features Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. The outdoor sectional sofa from Summer Classics pairs well with the clean line lounge chairs from CabanaCoast that create a delightful conversation nook in front of the fireplace.

Loft: This loft opens to the open-air balcony with pocketing sliding glass doors from Andersen Windows & Doors, installed by Florida Wood Window & Door. McDaniel delineates this large space with a cloud ceiling design in three unique yet subtle colors. The pendant from Lighting First offers the space beautiful arcing curves that echo in the floor lamps. Long, gray-washed, wide-plank flooring is a subtle backdrop for the interesting furniture pieces, like the white marble top and metal base high-top table, as well as the Burton James chaise and loveseat. Guest Suite: Energetic and vibrant, the artwork in this guest space boasts refreshing, lake-inspired hues in turquoise, teal, and cobalt. Low profile, tufted-back club chairs from Sunpan rest beneath the artwork for a picture-perfect visual. McDaniel darkens the gray palette for a stronger presence that shows in the Bernhardt bed in charcoal fabric with a chrome inlay. These iron tripod lamps with linen shades from Surya have an angular quality that melds with the edgy chrome benches from Neuvo.

Rear Elevation & Pool: “Pools tend to take on an architectural styling and design today,” describes Andrea. “Current fashion favors contemporary design, and this pool becomes a lovely extension of this home.” The warm gray and silver travertine covers the deck and pool, creating a seamless visual, while Castle Services of Southwest Florida provide much-needed protection from the elements with motorized roll down shutters and insect screens, in addition to Bahama access panels and decorative hinged shutters. The waterline tile is a white and gray glass that glistens and carries the colorway out to the edge of this expansive 40-foot pool.

COASTAL RETREAT BECOMES HOME A RENOVATED SUMMER CONDO WITH ENHANCED GULF VIEWS BECOMES A YEAR-ROUND HOME

homeanddesign.net

203

F

For two decades, a couple enjoyed the best of both worlds — the cultural richness of city living in Indianapolis and the relaxed vibe of their vacation home in Bay Colony, an upscale gated community in Naples, Florida. But, as full-time Southwest Florida residents well know, the allure of the Gulf is simply irresistible, so, the homeowners decided to leave “The Railroad City” in their tracks and make Naples their year-round home. They hadn’t updated their unit in the Windsor building since it first rose 20 years ago, so they realized it was time for a major renovation. They enlisted Collins DuPont Design Group — an interior design firm headquartered in Bonita Springs. It was an insightful choice, considering how well-versed Lead Designer Sherri DuPont is when it comes to The Windsor, where she’s already completed several units, including a penthouse. DuPont’s familiarity with the property, along with her team’s acumen for innovative solutions and unmatched attention to detail, made this a foolproof recipe for design success. u

Sitting Area: The designers electrify the sitting room with a Dimplex Opti-Myst fireplace that enhances ambiance, giving way to fireside comfort by way of two barrel chairs and a metallic leather ottoman by Burton James. The plush, round area rug from Kravet offers added warmth to the space, and the draped wall sconces by Terzani add a touch of class. Entry: The decorative, silver leaf eglomise panels in the entry are true works of art created with painstaking detail. DuPont and project leader Hailey Burkhardt of Collins DuPont Design group worked closely with local artist Christine Adele Moore to ensure the delicate magnolia pattern on the entry wall was picture-perfect in terms of both scale and detail. Six months and several mockups later, this one-of-a-kind wall treatment was installed and the client was overjoyed. The skillfully crafted linear console from Old Biscayne Designs sits just beneath it, adding bold contrast to this elegant space. Living Room (previous spread): From sunrise to sunset, the lighting in the living room is sheer perfection. An organic, amoeba-shaped chandelier — custom-made in Italy by Serip Lighting to the designers’ specifications — reflects beautifully on the pearlized Venetian plaster ceiling while an LED tape light illuminates the armchairs, a pair of A. Rudin sofas upholstered in an Armani/Casa textile, a set of coffee tables from Old Biscayne Designs, and a Stanton Carpet area rug. homeanddesign.net

205

Kitchen: What once served as the vent for a gas cooktop is now a soffit with recessed lighting. Other notable features in the kitchen include high-gloss eucalyptus cabinetry and a pearlized shagreen leather panel by Bailiwick Design Studio framed in polished nickel that showcase the SubZero refrigerator/freezer locally sourced through Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Counter stools by Italmond Furniture upholstered in a Romo fabric complement the Cristallo Smokey Quartzite seen in the kitchen island, countertops, backsplash, and kitchen walls.

206

homeanddesign.net

The mission was clear — eliminate anything that stood in the way of the home’s spectacular views of the Gulf. “When you walked into the master suites of these units, you walked into walls,” says DuPont. “By opening up the spaces, the view becomes part of the interior no matter what room you’re in.” DuPont teamed with Collins DuPont Design Group’s Project Leader, Hailey Burkhardt, to re-evaluate the space plan, and they rolled up their sleeves for a full-scale “gut job” that included installing windows where there weren’t any before, demolishing bathrooms, and replacing the synthetic marble countertops of the past with the stunning natural stones and porcelains of the present. A striking Vietnamese marble was deftly formed into master bath vanity tops. Passé 8” x 10” floor tiles were torn up throughout to make way for large-scale, thinly grouted 24” x 24” – 30” x 30” contemporary tiles. “The trend in tile now is ‘the bigger the better,’” DuPont confirms. Here, the team chose Via Lattea tiles, an exotic marble from Africa, which was flawlessly installed by Tropical Tile & Marble throughout the common areas. u

With the Gulf finally in the well-deserved spotlight and the surfaces having risen to their rightful place in the new millennium, DuPont and Burkhardt were ready to work their magic on finishes. Collaborating with Naples-based luxury builder BCB Homes, exquisite products were selected, including eucalyptus kitchen cabinets glazed to a mirror-like shine that were expertly installed by Bailiwick Design Studio. An Antolini Precioustone Smoky Quartz “Light” bar top is backlit to showcase its spectacular colorations and veining. “An incredible property of this caliber demands elements on par with its extraordinary locale, superior construction, and, of course, the architectural vision of Rob Herscoe and Mitko Yankov,” states Greg Brisson, president of BCB Homes. u

Bar: The shape of the bar is an engineering feat by Bailiwick Design Studio that is accomplished by curving the faces of the cabinetry, which mirrors the custom-built shelving unit above the bar. It boasts floating starfire glass shelves and dimmable, integral LED lighting strips that highlight the crystal stemware. Graceful barstools from Swaim Furniture swathed with sumptuous Casamance velvet round out the elegant aesthetic. Nook: After expanding the window to its outer limits — thus clearing the way to a stunning Gulf view — DuPont worked within the parameters of the building’s venting system to design this unique ceiling detail. With a breakfast nook showcasing such spectacular water views, why limit this seating area to the first meal of the day? The dining chairs are refinished by Collins DuPont Design Group and boast cushions upholstered in an Armani/Casa fabric. The custom oval table has a eucalyptus finish that complements the kitchen cabinets.

This extensive renovation project required a dedicated group effort by all parties involved. “The owners got the exact look they were going for, which I attribute to the synergy of the team,” says BCB Homes’ Robin Chand, project manager of this endeavor. “The whole experience was fantastic.” This summer will be the homeowners’ first in what they are now thrilled to call their fulltime residence. And in such gorgeous surroundings, it’s sure to be one they’ll treasure for years to come. n Master Bathroom: “The homeowner wanted to open up the master bath, and we obliged with a complete renovation,” explains Burkhardt. “By placing the tub in the center of the room, we were able to create the open feel they desired.” DuPont and Burkhardt designed a curved floating wall behind the tub as a backdrop using Titanium Striato glass tile, sourced through Ruben Sorhegui Tile and installed by Tropical Tile & Marble. Attached to it is Graff’s polished chrome, wall-mounted Luna Spout from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery — a dramatic form-meets-function effect. Opulence abounds with the lacquered walnut cabinets, the dazzling Corbett chandelier and sconces, and the glossy Lunar polished marble floors. Master Bedroom: The designers masterfully employ a neutral palette in the master bedroom by layering subtle variations and textures for the custom-designed upholstered bed and luxury gold-toned bedding. A shimmering blend of fine fabrics from Romo are seen in the headboard, while Casamance is responsible for the coverlet and shams, and Zoffany for the accent pillow. A glass John-Richard table lamp sits atop an ebonized Century Furniture nightstand, while cream-colored, organic plush Fabrica carpet lies underfoot.

homeanddesign.net

211

Family Room: To invigorate the home with a burst of color, the designers decided on a blue accent wall for a less formal family room. The blue hues in the stunning art piece adorning this wall adds playfulness to the space and harmonizes with the crushed blue velvet throw pillows that decorate the transitional Century Furniture sofa. When you consider the pops of bright yellow, the room’s palette pays homage to sun and sea. A modular cocktail table from Old Biscayne Designs centers the space, and a Hancock & Moore armchair provides additional seating.

Nick Radick, director of marketing for Knauf-Koenig Group, stretched his job description slightly to help a couple from Chicago find the perfect site for their newest home. “I connected them with someone who was selling their property off-market,” recalls Radick. When they finally settled on a piece of land in The Moorings, the lot had an older home that was completely torn down for this new build. Architect Falconer Jones was hired and Radick recommended the interior designers. He didn’t have to look far. Radick says, “I knew who to recommend when the homeowner was looking for creativity and efficiency. Charlie Hansen and Rebekah Errett-Pikosky of Clive Daniel Home were the perfect choice.” Radick continues, “We had done another project with them which won a lot of awards, but they outdid themselves this time.” This was corroborated by Matt Knauf, owner of the Knauf-Koenig Group. Knauf is usually found on-site, happily going over every detail with the site supervisor, providing the human quality control that gives Knauf-Koenig Group such a great reputation as a builder in Southwest Florida. u

Front Elevation: The roof’s corbels and brackets were all stained nearly black to stand in high contrast to the creamy exterior color of the five-bed, sixbath, 5,988-square-foot transitional home. Elements like the arched windows flanked by plantation shutters introduce other architectural styles, such as West Indies, and even a hint of a coastal vibe seen in the gray and white pavers from Allied Paver Systems. “I like clean, straight lines so even I was a bit surprised when this home became one of the favorite homes I’ve ever built,” says Knauf. Living Room, previous spread: The palette was set for the interior of the home by the contrast between the Geneva Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring from the European Elegance Collection — installed by Naples Flooring — and the dark beams against the white nickel gap ceiling. The mahogany front door from Andersen Windows & Doors — installed by Florida Wood Window and Door — is stained Aqua Black and features curved details on the arched transom window. The metal banister detail is inspired by Chippendale. The sofa, chairs, and stools were customized to suit the homeowners’ large family with blended performance fabric to make them easier to care for. The burnished gold chandelier not only fits the scale of the high ceiling, but, as Errett-Pikosky put it, “the piece complements the other gold fixtures throughout the home.” 224

Suspended from the nickel gap ceiling, with its inset chevron pattern, are a pair of Visual Comfort crystal chandeliers hung from burnished gold chains, setting a tone of sheer elegance in this stunning space. The large island boasts a white Cristallo quartzite slab countertop with a contrasting black base. Each end of the island features a stained wood chevron pattern, matching the living room accent wall. Custom stools in pewter gray add ample seating for guests. Ivory cabinets from Ruffino Cabinetry have burnished gold hardware, and the glass Lunada Bay Tile Lapis Pulse Flicker backsplash adds subtle color. “The marbling, in grays, whites, browns, and blues blend beautifully,” says Errett-Pikosky. A Sub-Zero and Wolf appliance package makes family feasts a breeze. homeanddesign.net

“I asked Matt how we were able to get this home built so smoothly, even during a pandemic, and he answered that it was the team we chose,” says Radick. “Working with Charlie and Rebekah was a wonderful collaboration.” Collaboration began at the micro level with the tried-and-true partnership between Errett-Pikosky and Hansen, who have been working side-by-side for 18 years. They finish each other’s sentences and have been known to read each other’s minds. Their synergy is effective at successfully bringing together the varied styles the homeowners desired. u

Dining Room: Ten chairs — upholstered in fabric with metallic thread set in champagne-painted frames — offer seating at the high-gloss, ebonystained table with its Silver Fox finish in the dining room. The tray ceiling is inset with Phillip Jeffries’ The Lost City of Silver wallpaper with genuine mica flecks and hosts a John-Richard chandelier of crystal nuggets hanging from golden arms. Finished mirrors sport an eglomise soft ombre pattern. Dinette: An upholstered window seat set in a sunny niche provides seating for the homeowners’ four children in this dinette adjacent to the kitchen. The light from the gilt and glass pendant reflects off the custom metallic finished table, while stunning chairs by Clive Daniel Home covered in blue tweed performance fabric provide complementary contrast in this sun-filled space.

Master Bathroom: The walls, floors, and shower of the master bath are clad in 24” x 48” Tele di Marmo Reloaded tile that mimics Cristallo. The Graff rectangular tub is set to enjoy the private garden view framed by white drapes embroidered with geometric pattern banding, while a gold-leafed occasional table holds bath essentials or a glass of wine. The elegant blackstained cabinets from Ruffino Cabinetry feature classic tapered wooden feet, crystal knobs, and twin sinks. Inset in the transom mirrors are Hudson Valley Lighting sconces adorned with crystal and polished chrome. A linen closet is set at one end and a bespoke makeup vanity area at the other, complemented by a silver velvet stool reminiscent of Old Hollywood. Master Bedroom: The ornate tongue-and-groove master bedroom ceiling features white beams inset with walnut. Hansen explains, “We chose walnut, as opposed to the darker woods found elsewhere, to add some lightness to the space. We wanted it to be dramatic, without being heavy or oppressive.” A gold-washed grasscloth wallcovering sets the tone for this Century bed with a textured chenille padded headboard. Nightstands have exposed gold hammered frames and mahogany walnut drawer fronts with polished marble tops, and a finely woven silver-striated wool carpet provides soft footing. Overhead is a hand-blown crystal chandelier by Visual Comfort reflecting the sheen from the textures of this sophisticated room.

“She was a strict traditionalist and her husband wanted something more contemporary,” says Errett-Pikosky of the homeowners. Bringing the two together was a challenge, but one well suited to the designers’ talents. “We aimed for a classic and traditional style, like their home in Chicago. But we added a slight informality suited to a Florida home, with a touch of glamour and edge to complement the sunshine and airiness of this area,” ErrettPikosky explains. To this end, the designers preselected some of the furniture pieces and fixtures in tones of blues, whites, creams, and light grays, and brought the clients into Clive Daniel Home’s 85,000-square-foot showroom to see the pieces up close. “The clients were very easy to work with,” explains Hansen. “They really listened to us and took our suggestions. Such flexibility was very welcome, and it made the whole project just flow smoothly.” “Working with such a cooperative builder was a huge help too,” says Errett-Pikosky. “We are just as big fans of the KKG team as they are of us.” Radick and the designers took lots of photos and kept in close contact with the clients while they were away. When the homeowners returned to The Moorings and saw their new home, they were delighted. Errett-Pikosky smiles when she says, “The easy way we worked together with the builder and the clients, it was like a marriage — a successful one.” n 230

Guest Bedroom: A palette of blues provides the accent color in this tranquil guest room. The dresser is stained in a muted slate blue, and a cerulean velvet armchair sits in the corner just off the custom area rug. “We usually have clients pick the rugs first, setting a tone for the room. Our design often flows from that,” explains Errett-Pikosky. The nightstands have pewter pulls that are echoed in the headboard and footboard of the Century bed, dressed in organic white bedding from Clive Daniel Home. Powder Bath: John-Richard sconces with calcite slabs fitted into golden tabs flank the geometric, silver-framed mirror in this polished powder bath. Split-faced Rice White marble strip cladding serves as a backdrop. Just below the mirror is a Brizo faucet from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery that is situated expertly above the glass Kohler Ice sink. A quartzite countertop sits atop the cabinetry, fitted with chrome and acrylic pulls.

Patio & Outdoor Kitchen: A tongue-and-groove ceiling floats above the shellstone flooring and pool deck of this multi-purpose outdoor living area. The island boasts split-faced marble, which also appears in the backsplash and on the range hood. Granite is used for the countertop on the island and behind the Wolf grill, making cleanup easy. “We only use the finest fixtures in the houses we build, like Sub-Zero and Wolf for appliances and Anderson Windows & Doors,” explains Radick. “We never lower our standards just to get a job.” Rear Elevation: A concrete dining room table surrounded by slipcovered chairs on casters creates a wonderful space for al fresco dining. Nearby, a sofa and four club chairs are gathered near the linear gas fireplace set in brick. A television adapted for outdoor viewing hangs above the fireplace. Castle Services installs motorized roll shutters, insect screens, and access panels that are crucial to a home so close to the water. The extensive rectangular pool features shimmering ice blue glass tile with gold accents, and bubblers on both sides of the sun chaises.

SUNSET VISIONS GLORIOUS VISTAS OVERLOOKING THE GULF INSPIRE A DESIGN THAT PAYS HOMAGE TO NATURE

“When I first walked in, I was struck by the spectacular sunset and knew I wanted those golden hues throughout,” recounts Susan Salimbene, interior designer at Norris Furniture & Interiors, who led the endeavor. “My vision was to bring in that beauty through color and texture.” This is how her design concept for the extensive remodel of this 18th-floor unit in Kalea Bay — executed in tandem with contractor Raul Saad — was born. The project is meant to elevate the spaces into stunning, livable showplaces for a Boston-based couple who owns the residence and uses it as their vacation home. While Salimbene communicated with the out-of-town homeowners mainly through Zoom and emails, their periodic visits throughout the five-month-long endeavor brought a delighted response to how things were progressing. Although the unit was brand new when purchased, Salimbene — with the help of Saad and his crew — take this design to new heights with the addition of intricate ceiling details, tasteful furnishings, sparkling finishes, and an emphasis on decorative lighting. “We took what was existing and upgraded it about three levels,” Saad remarks. u

Kitchen: The team at Norris Furniture & Interiors enhanced this clean, crisp, contemporary kitchen with stylish Elite Modern’s Costa Counter Stools, featuring a deep marine blue leather backed with rich smoked walnut veneers. The polished chrome bases add shine, as do three dazzling hanging pendants from the Quintus Collection by Lighting First. Previous Spread: A majestic sunset over the Gulf inspires a sand and sea palette touched by a warm golden light. The two showstoppers in this great room are the sophisticated Italian Bracci Vogue sectional and a striking focal wall constructed by Saad to Salimbene’s specifications. The latter features floor-toceiling and wall-to-wall split-faced quartz stone that is backlit for dramatic effect. The fireplace is framed with European oak with an ebony stain and topped with beige quartz. Elegant, mid-century modern-inspired pieces furnish the room — a pair of American Leather Jude swivels swathed in a speckled fabric, Vanguard’s McCartney Chair in tactile Keira Gold, and an arc floor lamp by Lighting First. A handwoven design by Exquisite Rugs called Roset lies beneath Hooker Furniture’s Melange Martini Table.

The horizon evolves throughout the day — at times bright and powerful, and tranquil and serene at other times. “The lighting is different at various moments throughout the day depending on the skyline, and how Susan captured that is stunning,” declares Norris Furniture & Interiors Director of Marketing, Linda Gangeri. u

Den: With oceanic references, this cozy den boasts modern elegance. The Sulley Sleeper Sofa by American Leather — wrapped in a sumptuous navy fabric — brings comfort with a European flair. The Canton Drink Table by Charleston Forge, with its slender hammered metal legs, adds sleekness over one arm of the sofa. Behind the modular console from the Nina Magon Collection for Universal Furniture, a graphic wallpaper with a metallic loop pattern by Simone Micheli adds a geometric element. Contemporary artwork hangs on the rear wall above a small table flanked by seating for two. Arteriors’ Bastille Floor Lamp stands tall in front of one of the floor-to-ceiling windows seen throughout this room, while a pair of enameled wall-hung chargers from John-Richard finish the look. Dining Room: As the sun sets over the mangroves, the view is framed by floor-to-ceiling windows draped with a sheer metallic Kravet fabric that Salimbene selected to reflect the glow off the bay. A glass-topped table from Lexington Furniture is mid-century modern-inspired and is surrounded by four Jessica Charles Eternity Dining Chairs covered in Vanguard’s textural Kiera Gold textile. The Hudson Valley bedazzling chandelier from Lighting First bears faceted crystal branches and mimics a shimmering dandelion as it warms and illuminates this picturesque scene.

Master Bedroom: To give the master bedroom that “special something,” Saad brought Salimbene’s vision into being with a brilliant floor-to-ceiling headboard wall using Phillip Jeffries’ dimensional Omexco Capiz wallcovering. It is made of crushed capiz shells that catch the light streaming in through the expansive windows, which comprise an entire wall. Precedent Furniture’s Caleb King Bed is adorned with Eastern Accents’ Wellfleet Bedding, which features an off-white textured matelassé coverlet and shams in an earth-toned graphic print. Silk-shaded pendants from the Z-Lite Sedona Collection at Lighting First hang above a pair of bedside tables from the “Make it Yours” group by Vanguard furniture. The Byos Collection rug by Jaipur perpetuates the sunset palette, while the Winthrop Chair from Tommy Bahama for Lexington adds character in the corner by the windows. Master Bathroom: The master bath is an elegant offshoot of the master bedroom. Here, a Romo paper glistens on the walls, as do the shimmering Kovacs Forest ICE II sconces that Salimbene selected for the decorative lighting. Above the edgy soaking tub, the Double Hollyhock painting subtly complements the large-scale tiles that cover the floors and line the glass-enclosed shower. Sparing no detail, the designer adds a petite vanity stool — Zelda from Uttermost — swathed in a taupe fabric from Hancock and Moore.

Throughout the spaces — where an open plan catalyzes an effortless flow — Salimbene imagines both organic and linear shapes. Her method incorporates an abundance of texture and decorative lighting, a deft use of back lighting, and a lustrous sheen attained by using exquisite materials of the highest quality and pedigree. “We gave dimension to the ceilings with intricate woodwork in every room of the home,” says Saad. He adds, “Almost everything was custom made in our woodshop. We’re very proud of our craftsmanship.” “The natural elements presented by the Gulf became united through color and texture … all with a sleek, modern feel,” states Salimbene. “With Kalea Bay’s stunning coastal views and sunsets seen through floor-to-ceiling glass, my design vision easily came to life. It was an exciting project to be invited to work on.” n

Guest Bedroom (Above): This guest room flaunts Universal Furniture’s chic and sophisticated Bacall King Bed, captivating its occupants with an oversized, upholstered grid-tufted headboard. Above the bed, a contemporary artwork on canvas titled Marbella 2 boasts golden ringlets and swirls on a textured taupe background, emanating contemporary style. Its metallic design plays beautifully with Uttermost’s Whirlwind round mirror, framed in bright gold. Salimbene once again employs Universal’s Paradox dresser and chooses Wiltshire Nightstands to accompany it. Eastern Accents’ Sconset Lemon bedding includes a pair of king shams in a herringbone pattern that correspond with Nourison’s hand-knotted rug from the Tahoe Collection. Hall Bathroom: An understated palette of taupe and cream is fitting for this streamlined powder bath. Salimbene blanketed the space with formally dressed walls covered in Allure by Romo, a textured monochrome painting, and ultradelicate LED sconces by Eurofase. Guest Bedroom (Left): Reminiscent of a guest suite in an upscale hotel, this room is furnished with a pair of Quadrato Platform queen beds, both dressed in fashionable bedding from Eastern Accents, and separated by a Universal Furniture Paradox nightstand. The Paradox dresser mirrors the nightstand with whitewashed wood elevated by a lustrous silver base and drawers adorned with minimal hardware. Above the bed, a metallic abstract art piece titled “Parade” from Uttermost adds to the transitional décor of the room, as does the Strathmore table lamp, also from Uttermost. homeanddesign.net

Lanai: The majestic sunset over the Gulf of Mexico draws homebuyers and tourists alike. For the lanai, Salimbene chooses an assortment of modern outdoor furnishings in a soft cream hue. The conversational seating area includes a pair of ottomans and a high-top table with barstools from the Pavillion East Side Collection — in an intended effort to make the view the star of the show, absent of any distractions.

In an age where building plans can be downloaded from the internet and generic CAD drawings churned out of every printer, Architect Jeff Clark of Arcadia Design still carries a sketchbook. “I jot down ideas that come to me, think them over, sometimes put them away and revisit them later when I am presented with a new project,” he explains. “I like the original architecture of coastal Florida like those created by Addison Mizner (1872-1933) who was Beaux Artstrained. The traditional forms are not wholly modern nor generic, nor canned, but related to the climate and culture, organically and authentically. A home should have a sense of the place where it is found.” u

Front Elevation: This two-story coastal transitional home has 4,211 square feet under air with four bedrooms, six baths, and outdoor living entertainment spaces, bringing the total square footage of this property to 5,339. Dark gray Tremron roof tiles and burnished blue pavers by Allied Pavers are set against a creamy white exterior while burnished bronze window and door frames by Andersen Windows & Doors — sourced locally through Florida Wood Window & Door — recall a cherished Old Florida style. Rendering: Architect Jeff Clark was co-developer on the project. “When I get to do a spec home, I think of myself as the client and get to choose things based on my own proclivities,” he says. “Here I used lots of windows and glass, for an airy feel, and to suit the home’s environment. I wanted the home to look natural in its setting.” Clark’s vision of a light-filled home became a reality. 264

Den: Wide gallery windows flood this executive den with daylight, and evenings are bathed in a warm glow by a Palecek chandelier made of mixed wooden beads, suspended by the Phillip Jeffries grasscloth ceiling panels. A trademark specific to Lisa Ficarra of Ficarra Design Associates can be found in the ceiling beams — they alternate between shallow and deeper depths for visual interest. — they alternate between shallow and deeper depths for visual interest. Textured linen chairs and a tree trunk table from the Phillips Collection front a faux shagreen console table desk. A patterned driftwood credenza adds storage and reduces clutter. Great Room: One’s eyes are drawn upward to the 24-foot ceiling highlighted by pecky cypress beams and a 40-inch round branch chandelier in this voluminous great room. A built-in bookshelf and bench flank the porcelain fireplace wall with the space above it purposely left blank. Ficarra says, “Not every wall has to be filled. Just like silence can add to a conversation, so can white space add to great design.” Woven seagrass chairs and a Vanguard sofa with wrap-around curves add seating in this subtle neutral space.

Kitchen: The Castle Plank flooring by BOEN Hardwood is finished in Oak Old Grey and echoes the wood seen in the island and custom-range hood. The rest of the kitchen boasts pristine white cabinetry and Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. The checkerboard tone-on-tone backsplash adds textured dimension without adding unwanted color. The island countertop, illuminated from above by Visual Comfort pendants, complements the rich brown earth tones found in the three upholstered chairs. “After the pandemic, people just feel jagged and want to be soothed by their furnishings and fabrics,” Ficarra says. “They want to come home and feel surrounded by warm color and comfort.” Dining Room: A Made Goods chandelier, complete with beads and raffia shavings, hangs above the maple table in this welcoming dining room. Host and hostess chairs feature sloping arms while open-back side chairs are upholstered in blue, gold, and white chenille velvet and complete seating for eight. A shiplap ceiling with painted wood beams contrast the dark framed pocketing doors to the pool deck and outdoor dining area.

To that end, Clark designed a light and airy coastal transitional home with an open floor plan for this Port Royal site, complete with an offset side entry that includes a portico and an expansive bay window. Clark, a former professor of architecture, says the flow that bridges the inside of a home to the principle outdoor space is very important to good residential design, as is a touch of artistry — an undefinable ingredient introduced by an architect. As developing partner to Mike Assaad of Waterside Builders, Clark devises a big-picture plan and Assad brings Clark’s concept to fruition. The pair have worked together on past projects and Clark is Assaad’s biggest fan. “Mike is educated, professional, and very hardworking. We collaborate so very well. I admire him tremendously,” says Clark. The feeling is mutual. Assaad communicated with Clark from his Boston headquarters during the pandemic by phone and email only. Their shared trust, built over previous projects, came in handy. “There were plenty of challenges with materials and manpower building this spec home during the shutdown,” Assaad said, “but I knew Jeff’s plans would be perfect and I could rely on that.” Assaad and Clark also counted on another member of the triad — Interior Designer Lisa Ficarra of Ficarra Design Associates. “Mike and I have enjoyed working on many projects together, and when this particular project came up, he gave me a call and said he had a great project he thought I would be interested in,” says Ficarra. “That’s when he introduced me to Jeff and we worked together on the floor plan and interior details. He was a pleasure to work with, and I am very pleased with the finished product.” u homeanddesign.net

Master Bedroom: Pecky cypress panels and the white-washed beams add a slight slope and visual contrast to the vaulted ceiling in this master bedroom. A Century canopy bed with upholstered head and foot boards takes pride of place in this neutral space while a Vanguard bench and twin armchairs — upholstered in geometric patterned textured cotton — offer cozy seating at the end of a long day. Kravet raw silk bedding and an Ann Gish quilt dress the bed which rests on a custom rug from Designers’ Rug Center for soft footing.

Master Bathroom: Proving the peak of luxe glamour, seashell patterned grasscloth adorns the walls of this lavish master bath. Two under-mount sinks with Kohler polished nickel fixtures are set into the quartzite countertop above icy white cabinetry. Polished chrome and white glass sconces by Visual Comfort flank John-Richard arabesque mirrors. A rectangular soaking tub with a convenient step-up addition sits atop a white Thassos porcelain floor comprised of 24” x 48” tiles by Coastal Stone. The double vanity’s countertop adds subtle hues in tones of periwinkle blue, soft gray, and lustrous white. A crystal rod chandelier lights the scene and adds to the jewel-box effect in this sophisticated room, as does the large glassed-in shower by Builders Glass of Bonita that features Kohler fixtures. homeanddesign.net

Loft: Clark says owners today want no space wasted in their homes, and he designed this flexible loft to accommodate those wishes. This space is bordered by an iron baluster and furnished with an inviting seating group, making it a perfect meeting space for guests to mingle.

272

homeanddesign.net

“Lisa is very creative and understands the high-end luxury homebuilding market well,” says Assaad. “I knew her design would be unique and appealing and, despite some trying times, my collaboration with Lisa and Jeff has had a very happy ending.” Before the building of the home was even finished, Assaad got a call on a Sunday. He ran down to the property with his iPad, gave a quick tour of the home to a potential buyer in Massachusetts, and barely got back out to the street before the house was sold for beyond full asking price — $5.5 million — beating out a previous potential buyer. “Demand is going off the charts and prices are going up with no sign of stopping,” says Assaad. “I’ve been at this since 1995 and have never seen anything like this. The pentup demand of the pandemic means people are turning their backs on their homes up north and never looking back. They are snapping up houses in Southwest Florida as fast as they can be built.” n This home was sold by Chris Wells | Olde Naples Real Estate.

Guest Bedroom: The Vanguard bed in this guest room has upholstered half rounds in mushroom Kravet Couture fabric covering its frame, and crisp organic linens dress the bed. A whitewashed resin tree trunk table services the silver rattan armchair. Underfoot is a latticework sisal and cotton rug from Designers’ Rug Center.

Outdoor Living: The star of the outdoor living area is the two-toned stacked stone wall with its Isokern Fireplace offering the perfect place for warm conversations on cool evenings. Open-back bucket chairs in outdoor rattan with ivory Sunbrella cushions surround an ossified tree trunk in a silvery gray finish. The adjacent outdoor kitchen has a 36-inch Alfresco Grill, Blanco sink, and under-counter refrigerator to service an outdoor dining group under a stained cypress tongue-and-groove ceiling. Rear Elevation: The massive outdoor living space hosts a large pool, spa, and soaking sun deck. “The site has a northern exposure allowing for a generous outdoor entertainment area,” says Assaad. Shellstone lines the deck with Lunada Bay rectangular tiles shimmering in an array of blue hues in the pool itself. Hubbardton Forge Lighting wall sconces match those at the front of the home and light the way around the deck to the separate guest cabana above the garage.

DESIGNER Q&A WITH CHRISSY HOWARD & BARBARA SCHWENK OF JINX MCDONALD INTERIOR DESIGNS

This dynamic duo has done it again. Award-Winning Interior Designer Chrissy Howard and Design Associate Barbara Schwenk of Jinx McDonald Interior Designs take this trite interior and transform it into a refreshing, California Chic family home. We sat down with Howard and Schwenk to get the full story on this bright and bold remodel. The existing home, full of traditional elements, was calling out for an update, and one of the homeowners was calling out for color — this intrepid color-confident design team matched perfectly with the clients! u

RENDERING Home & Design: What were the clients looking for? Howard: When someone says, “I love color,” and when they actually pull images of color, that’s when you know you’re going to get to use color. The lady of the house was a very prepared client; she came to our first meeting with a plethora of inspirational imagery. We were excited that this client was outside the norm — a young wife and mother with a strong vision of how she wanted to live in this home with her family, and the design style she wanted to be surrounded by. We were pleased to be able to give her both! u homeanddesign.net

281

Home & Design: Will you walk me through your design process for a project like this? Howard: We always encourage our clients to communicate their preferences with pictures, such as a favorite piece of art or furniture they want to work around. It’s during those first few meetings when we decide if a client should see all the options, or whether we should narrow them down. We ascertained this client was decisive and loved color, but also that she was open-minded to our suggestions when we collaborated together. Communicating the design to clients through these beautiful three-dimensional renderings — done by the talented Barbara Schwenk — is a powerful tool we employ. The renderings offer the clients a chance to preview the design before committing to something like raspberry-colored chairs in a blonde kitchen. u 282

homeanddesign.net

Home & Design: Will you share with me how you achieved a balance between comfort and trends in your design with this familyforward client? Howard: We understand that trends can be popular one minute and blasé the next. So, if we take cues from our client’s preferences and form cozy, relaxed, and practical spaces, as opposed to something that is trending, there is a greater chance of them loving it now and loving it later — it is timeless. To balance functionality and style, we opted for durable fabrics like Sunbrella and Crypton in the kitchen, and the California Chic concept lent itself well with this wipeable, flat-cabinet door style. The island is a functional two-tier design — one at counter height and one at table height. The latter is perfect for the young children in the home with artistic pendant lights overhead that possess a sculptural quality and add some fun to the space. u

283

BEFORE

RENDERING AFTER Home & Design: When you presented the renderings to the clients, what was their reaction to the bright colors? How do you know where to use bold color and how much to use? Howard: I loved the client’s enthusiasm! She was always saying, “You nailed it!” I remember a conversation my design associate, Barbara Schwenk, and I had about the family room builtin, and we were asking each other, “What shade of green — and where do we start and stop it?” Through Schwenk’s renderings, we were able to get a better sense of how to use this powerful, vibrant green, and it was clear that painting the back of the built-in with a creamyivory color was the right move to achieve just the right amount of bold color. u

284

homeanddesign.net

285

Home & Design: With vivid hues in most rooms of this home, can you elaborate on the decision behind this deviation from color in the master bath? Howard: It’s so important for us to listen to our clients. In the master bath, the lady of the house wanted a spa-like retreat, and the man of the house wanted a luxurious steam shower — a place where they could both wind down and relax. The clients fell in love with the black, white, and gray tile, and it’s what inspired the color scheme that functions as art above the tub. This Asian zen style is exactly the quiet space they had envisioned. u

RENDERING

Home & Design: We’d love to touch on the current Southwest Florida market. What have your clients been asking for and prioritizing in their design projects? Howard: After going through a pandemic, people seem to appreciate their homes now on a different level. What we’re seeing is people starting to rethink major spaces like kitchens, master suites, outdoor spaces, and obviously offices! They are requesting more luxury items in the kitchen because if they cannot run out and get their favorite coffee, they want to be able to make it at home. In the master suite, washable fabrics are preferred over dry-clean only — essentially an uptick in practicality. u

Home & Design: What advice do you have for homeowners looking to remodel or purchase a new home this year? Howard: We understand that home-buying choices seem more limited right now, but just know that we have the experience and expertise to guide you through a complex remodel. Don’t discount a diamond in the rough — with the right team, it can become your dream home! n

ZOEY ART After battling cancer twice before, Bonnie Ziskin was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, an experience that she says “made her lose her fear of failure.” With this in mind, she launched a career in art at the age of 70. An interest became a lifestyle, and three years later, Bonnie’s studio within the Naples Art District is filled to the brim with color, joy, and inspiration. She paints acrylic and mixed media on canvas, along with large fused glass bowls and whimsical faces that instantly bring a pop of life into any home. An inspiration in her art communities, as well as to any and all who learn of her background battling cancer, Bonnie Ziskin is just getting started. These openings have additional trim casing that was added by the builder. q Plantation shutters provide the privacy you need and the relaxing tranquility you desire in your master en suite. This bathroom features a two-panel shutter with hidden tilt rods outlined by an elegant frame. Plantation shutters boast everyday beauty, minimal care, and long-term performance.

KB PATIO

This space brings the indoor experience outdoors — literally. The relaxed, communal setting beckons you to relax and take in the beautiful landscape — the perfect backdrop day or night. Hues of white and icy blues mimic both sky and water. Serenity at its best.

p Feel like you’re at a luxury spa in the comfort of your own home while relaxing in these hydraulic-driven sun loungers with built-in cocktail tables. The graceful Manta umbrella completes this sophisticated scene. t The client was able to transform this long, narrow space at the edge of the infinity pool into separate, intimate moments for relaxing quietly by the pool. Contrasting materials help define the spaces as separate but relatable. The unmistakable, sweeping Stingray umbrella adds a sense of drama and sophistication, and it doubles as a functional piece of sculptured art. DIANA HALL DESIGN

This bathroom remodel has it all — farmhouse meets coastal modern with a hint of industrial. The organic shaped freestanding tub sits on a soft curved 4” platform covered in playful gray penny tile. Walls are clad with fabulous geometric-patterned cement tile and feature floating shelves painted soft gray. With the addition of candles, bath products, and coral, we enhance the spalike atmosphere in this bathroom oasis. In order to have the proper symmetry on this wall, lighting, mirrors, plumbing fixtures — as well as the vanity drop-down — needed to be perfectly coordinated to achieve this harmonious balance. We used a wide array of finishes, Restoration Hardware dark bronze metal mirrors and sconces, Kohler brushed nickel faucets, and a lighter tone of bronze on the cabinet pulls. We cladded the wall with 5” tongue-and-groove paneling to add an extra layer of interest. Rain-texture, window-like glass openings, and a fullheight barn door add drama and attention to the shower. The walls are covered with an exotic polished stone. Courtesy of Diana Hall Design | dianahalldesign.com Photography by Rick Bethem Photography

DESIGNERS’ RUG CENTER With the pandemic gripping India and people unable to go to work, Designers’ Rug Center in Naples learned that rug weavers found it necessary to work from home. The store’s owner, Chris Smith, commissioned ten exclusive custom rugs and had them shipped to his showroom. The rugs are 9’ x 12’ and 8’ x 10’ and represent the love that these weavers — like Rama, Bhawri, and Pinky — have for their craft. Personal notes accompanied the selection of beautiful new rugs. They explain that these artisans had chosen to continue creating fine quality rugs of wool and bamboo silk on a cotton foundation from home during their country’s pandemic crisis. The messages all shared the same theme — Happy weavers, happy rugs. Designers’ Rug Center also purchased a stunning rug made from a traditional bright and beautiful Sari material. “We’re happy to support these talented artisans during unprecedented times,” says Smith. “Given their country’s current conditions, the dedication to their craft is inspiring.” Courtesy of Designers’ Rug Center | designersrugcenter.com

REAL WOOD FLOORS

Some things in life you treasure more with each passing year — keepsakes passed down from parent to child or cherished ideas and values that take root over generations. A home’s flooring can also grow in beauty and value, lovingly worn with use. This inspiration led us to curate hard maple and hickory lumber from New England to create a beautiful surface that will endure for years to come. In this 6,204-square-foot home, Real Wood Floors installed a brushed grain, dynamically weathered American Hickory wide plank called Faithful from The Steadfast Collection.

KOASTAL DESIGN GROUP

Koastal Design Group made their clients’ dreams a reality with this stunning master suite renovation. The master bath was extended and completely redesigned to create this spacious area fit for a spa. The shiplap cladded ceiling tray defines the enormous glass walk-in shower that is flanked by large windows and has a porcelain feature wall and freestanding tub. Gorgeous his-and-her custom-designed vanities and a built-in linen cabinet in contrasting finish coordinate with the custom millwork paneling encasing the vanity mirrors, adorned with decorative sconces. In a white and seaglass palette, the bedroom is a sanctuary, warmed by the beautiful flooring from Real Wood Floors. The nightstands feature jewel-like agate pulls, while the paneled wall and ceiling feature carry the coastal theme from the adjoining master bath. This dream makeover is a perfect example of Koastal Design Group’s signature, “livable luxury,” where comfort and beauty beckon you to rest.

J. LYNN DESIGN GROUP One of our favorite features in our Opulent retreat project is the entry. The floating radius rosewood panels set the stage for this rotunda entry design. The panels are backlit with LED lighting adorned with a beautiful cut crystal sconce in the center of each panel. The custom mosaic flooring from Ruben Sorhegui Tile is made of Lagos, white Thassos, and a white frosted glass. This custom bar was detailed for the clients’ specific needs. The quartered walnut cabinetry is complemented by Cristallo countertops and smoked mirror. This bar features a beer tap, full wine refrigerator, and a hidden record player, as well as ample storage. For dining spaces in these condos, we often implement a banquette design, which allows us to gain more space for the living room furniture layouts. In this unit, we created a curved wall and banquette that feature a Phillip Jeffries wallcovering. The dining table has an extension allowing casual dining for six or a larger party of 10.

The kitchen is a spectacular example of well executed Porcelain Slab fabrication by Classic Stone. One of my favorite features is the recessed panel in the waterfall end of the eating counter. The crisp white cabinetry paired with painted iron ore cabinetry and polished nickel inlays provide bold contrast that creates layers and character. The kitchen sink is a hammered polished nickel from Kallista. Our grand salon features two curved sofas that are centered around a custom coffee table and Wired Custom Lighting fixture. The color palette is full of warmth with touches of turquoise. Our client specifically didn’t want the traditional Florida blue palette. The master bath is a combination of porcelain materials, with a faux marble in charcoal on the floor that perfectly complements the charcoal veining in the porcelain slab walls. The shower feature wall in a white Thasos 3-D waterjet tile adds texture. The custom cabinetry plays off beveled details to create another three-dimensional layer, complemented with textural hardware. Courtesy of J.
