PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Sarasota has a long long history of architectural and design importance. According to Carl Abbott, FAIA, one of the original members of the Sarasota School of Architecture, “Sarasota in the 1950s was one of the most important places in the world for architectural creativity, where the greatest design movements of the day came together.” That tradition of unique and interesting styles of architecture and design is what we proudly bring to you in each issue of Home & Design. This issue is no exception, featuring ten homes representing the best architects, interior designers, and construction professionals, offering the finest in home products and services. In addition to those featured homes, our Distinctive Design section on page 139 showcases a array of interior and exterior photography that we hope inspires you and provides ideas to create a dream home suited to your own personal style and taste. Enjoy.

The natural elements that make Florida a virtual paradise - brilliant sunshine, tangy Gulf breezes, and invigorating salt water - can wreak havoc on the very furniture designed to help you enjoy them. Bargain priced plastics, cheap fabrics, and flimsy construction not only pose safety hazards, but they are also uncomfortable and will require frequent replacement. A wise investment can bring you decades of relaxation with minimal maintenance. To ensure that your outdoor furniture will be durable,

OUTDOOR FURNITURE

functional and beautiful, concentrate your search on top quality manufacturers whose designs are timeless.

INVEST IN QUALITY TO BEAT THE ELEMENTS

ALUMINUM IS THE GOLD STANDARD Outdoor furniture made from corrosive-resistant aluminum doesn’t need to be shielded from the sun, rain or temperature extremes. And since it’s so lightweight, turning your chaise lounge to catch the sun, moving a table into the shade, or rearranging a seating group for your guests is easy. Maintenance is minimal, and aluminum furniture can be kept clean with soapy water.

WICKER OR RATTAN? Many people confuse synthetic resin wicker furniture with “rattan.” Rattan is a natural fiber while wicker refers to the weave. Synthetic resin is a popular material for outdoor furniture, and when skillfully woven, resembles rattan. It is also lightweight and cleans easily with soap and water. If you have had a bad experience with synthetic resin furniture that unraveled, became brittle, and cracked, it was because the furniture was a low-quality polyvinyl chloride (PVC) material, a widely produced synthetic plastic polymer.

REVOLUTIONARY RESIN German manufacturer DEDON revolutionized outdoor furniture with its creation of the world’s first and finest The Barcelona Collection features generous proportions

Rich tones, dramatic lighting, warm stone. All these elements create a grand entrance to this Sarasota home perched on the barrier island of Longboat Key. “Our clients wanted to build their home on Longboat Key with a relaxed Bali flair,” says the home’s builder, Gordon White, President of G.A. White Homes based in Beavercreek, Ohio. “As the project evolved, they added traditional and contemporary elements to create a timeless, transitional feel. Their main goal was to make the house warm and welcoming to all. The result was a breathtaking transitional home that still has Balinese influences throughout.” The owners choose Debbie Sykes of Debbie Sykes Interior Design, a family friend from Dayton Ohio, to bring their vision to life. The client’s number one priority was family. “They wanted to be able to enjoy the home with family, and each detail chosen focuses on that. They have nicely-sized guest quarters, hidden bunk beds, and large living spaces that can accommodate the entire family and guests,” adds White. The other goal was to showcase the natural beauty of the island and the gulf front location. “We chose materials that brought the island to life inside the house,” White says. The owners spared no detail in the home’s creation. When you drive up, a stately gate helps separate the home from the outside world. And once you enter, it’s easy to get lost in the calm island feel the residence evokes. “One of my favorite features of the house is the casual main space, which is an open floor plan with expansive views of the Gulf of Mexico,” says principal residential designer Richard Guzman of R.G. Designs. “It starts as you enter the main foyer, then the home to the amazing raised pool deck and outdoor living area on the Gulf.” White adds, “The moment you walk into the home, you see the infinity pool, beach, waves, palm trees. It blends seamlessly together like nature intended it.”

Opposite: As the gathering space of the home, the living space was designed with the family in mind. Light walls in ‘Balance Beige’ allow details of the room to come to life. A 72-inch linear fireplace is the focal point of the room, highlighted with granite and stone to allow space for an 80-inch TV. Columns surround the space trimmed in stained white oak with sand inspired wallpaper highlights. Previous Page: Designed by Rich Guzman of R.G. Designs, the home’s exterior offers a glimpse of the grandeur found inside. Once you enter the gates, a meandering paver driveway in a Tremron Stonehurst Gray Blend leads to the home. The owners chose calm, cool tones for the home’s exterior — Sherwin-Williams Worldly Gray, Intellectual Gray, and Peppercorn. The garage doors are from D & D Garage Doors. The landscape plan included native Florida plants. In the evening, strategically placed landscape lighting highlights magnificent palms, a water feature, and the natural stone.

The clients wanted a large kitchen to entertain and cook. The starting point was an over-sized island which can accommodate the entire family. “The most important factor when designing the kitchen was to make sure it was open to the amazing Gulf of Mexico sunsets in the evening,” says White. Two large Sub-Zero flush door refrigerators, Wolf cooking appliances, and a Wolf microwave drawer round out the space. A large walkin pantry provides storage as does as a built-in coffee bar with refrigerated drawers from Miele. The kitchen’s backsplash tile is Crossville Sideview Glass from Hamilton Parker. The Art Craft rifted white oak cabinets came from EuroTech Cabinetry, and the countertops are Cambria in Windermere. Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring, sourced from GCFlooring, anchors the room.

Above: “We wanted to create a bar that was fun, functional, yet still open to the main areas to allow guests to see the ocean,” White says. The kitchen and bar are separated by a custom-made glass wine display complete with LED illumination to showcase the collection’s finest bottles. The bar area cabinets are made from the same of wood as the island cabinets. The countertop and backsplash in this area are from the Cambria Jewel collection. The built-in Sub-Zero wine cooler, ice maker, and stemware dishwashing drawers finish off the appliance package.

Opposite: Uniquely designed ceiling beams separate the open concept living room, kitchen, and dining spaces. A vast eat-in kitchen allows for the smaller, less formal dining room.

The shower’s highlights are its handmade Lunada Bay glass tile in Japoinesa and the Kohler plumbing fixtures. The bathroom cabinets came from Eurotech Cabinetry. A freestanding Bain air tub finishes off the space. Each master vanity features glass tile and a floating mirror with LED backlighting. Opposite: The master bedroom is a true retreat for the homeowners, featuring a wellappointed sitting area. The oversized room takes advantage of the breathtaking view of the Gulf of Mexico. The flooring is eight-inch planks from Legno Bastone Elite Collection in Smoked Kelly. The room’s calm color, ‘Tinsmith,’ is highlighted by a unique ceiling treatment, which includes stained white oak and a cathedral ceiling over the sitting area.

Above: “The lanai was probably the most important space of the entire house,” says White. “We created a space that captured the beautiful views, and allowed the home’s interior to transition to the outside world.” An outdoor bar has a built-in Lynx grill and SubZero refrigerator. The covered living space features an impressive linear, open-flame fireplace. Opposite: The infinity pool — with depths ranging from four to six feet — and spa create an amazing place to catch the sunsets and peer into the gulf beyond. The pool is complete with a three-inch deep lounge area for sunning and wading.

This classic cottage on the sailboat deep waters of the Grand Canal in Holmes Beach seamlessly melds casual comfort and sophistication, while ultimately achieving the owner’s desire for a flawless transition from indoors to out. Formerly the site of a quaint 1960s cottage, homeowners Tina and Matt Ford enlisted Dan Gagne of Gagne Construction to craft a new home-base for boating and entertaining. Their desire was to recreate the charm of the original cottage with a modern spin to fit their family and lifestyle. “The details are what make this project so unique. The home is just 2,378 square feet, but each room has a flair and character with architectural features and surprising highlights. Their vision was in the intricate details and we were able to offer a variety of clever products which they utilized to create something truly special,” says Gagne.

Opposite and Below: The water is at the forefront from the moment you enter the living area. A soothing color palette provides relaxation and comfort. A woven banana leaf cocktail table is eco-friendly and functional, set in front of the down-filled sectional sofa. The slipcovers in durable Sunbrella fabric provide a casual appeal. A swivel glider chair in paisley print is also by Four Seasons. The shiplap ceiling is washed in a Sherwin-Williams white with custom crafted faux box beams to accentuate the soaring volume of the room. “The focal point in this room is the built-in with a collection of natural and unique items,” says Burgess. “Sea fans, a pony hair box, and a driftwood mirror add a layer of texture to the room.”

HOME & DESIGN 2016 V2

49

The home’s coastal elements are mixed with country chic touches to create an interesting take on this local design. Teresa Burgess, owner of Saltair, was responsible for the well-executed mix of unique and found items. Orange Moon Interiors owner and principal designer Kelly Kaiser’s hard finish selections throughout the three bedroom, three bath home deliver a vintage yet classy aesthetic.

Above: The continued use of eco-friendly furnishings ties the cozy semi-formal dining area into the rest of the home. The rustic rectangular table and six standard chairs are made of reclaimed wood, complete with original nail holes and imperfections for authenticity. The addition of two slipcovered dining chairs by Dovetail in taupe cotton achieves an element of soft sophistication. The eight light white-beaded crystal chandelier is both functional and feminine in contrast to the room’s more rustic finishes. Opposite: The kitchen’s use of contrasting white with pops of color and texture is an important design technique when creating a cottage feel. The solid surface Pompeii countertop in ‘Urban’ rests on a bold-colored Bahamas cabinetry by Medallion. The flat edges of the counters are reminiscent of the 1960s and an antique thirty-six-inch fireclay farmhouse sink add to the authenticity. A custom cypress wood range hood is a vintage focal point to the kitchen area and draws the eye toward the ceiling detail. Washed gray finish kitchen stools by Rivers Edge create another layer of texture.

Creating a cottage style is not always about relaxed fits and charming wood. John Matter, co-owner of Matter Brothers Furniture, notes, “Sometimes a little classic conformity can be just as inviting in a cottage design. The trend we are seeing is a more sophisticated coastal cottage.” With that in mind, the furnishings draw upon eco-friendly woods and a plethora of textiles and patterns to bring dimension and intrigue to each living area. The rustic porcelain tile flooring sits in dark contrast to the classic statuary marble in the kitchen and bath backsplashes and countertops. The Ford’s desire for a refuge perfect for entertaining friends both indoors and along the water’s edge required Gagne to elevate the pool deck perimeter to maintain an easy transition between the living areas and outdoor spaces. The design results in a flawless flow, creating multiple seating areas for entertaining on the Grand Canal.

“This is my favorite room in the house,” explains Burgess. “The hallmark of good design is when a room is both luxurious and livable, and this master suite has layer upon layer of textures, finishes, and fabrics that have created a room with elevated, yet comfortable, coastal styling. Light-toned cypress wood creates a feature wall filled with rustic charm. The Summerhill Collection in ‘Parchment’ complements the home’s coastal flavor. The bed frame is highlighted with inlaid cane in both the headboard and rails. Varying shades of blue and metallic hues in both lamps and accessories accent the soft quilted cream colored bedding. A regal tufted bench at the foot of the bed and two wing chairs by Johnathan Lewis in quilted chenille velvet add a traditional sophistication to the handsome master suite.

having realized his vision for his home. “I wanted a home

was instrumental in his decision to build in this idyllic spot.

Opposite: In keeping with the beach location, the driveway is paved with a sand-like material that tamps down into a firm walkable surface. The driveway leads to garages that accommodate two cars each. The custom front door with a multipoint locking system is flanked by two slim windows. Multiple balconies with ornate iron balustrades illustrate the way Mediterranean touches have been given a Caribbean theme in this house. The artful, freeform landscaping appears independent of human intervention and includes mature variegated palms, tropical and native plantings, interspersed with brilliant bromeliads, and natural rocks and moss. Above: The furnishings are a deft mix of leather couches, solid wood glass-topped and metal embellished end tables, giant pillows, plush throws, and genuine Italian Renaissance antiques from the 18th and 19th centuries. Of special note is the oval Venetian-style mirror that tops an antique walnut credenza circa 1790 to the left of the entry. Vibrant color is provided by the anchoring ruby-red Persian carpet, part of the owner’s extensive antique collection from different regions of Iran. Artful accessories — candlesticks, lamps, busts, masks, and flower arrangements — tie the whole room together, with ambient lighting provided by recessed lights and floor and table lamps. Intimately involved from the outset with Mason Martin Builders and Beacon Design, Abrahamson made selections consistent with the Old World Europe theme. The overall result is a dramatic white-on-white classic style incorporating eclectic antiques and new, rustic-feel furniture and dĂŠcor. The three-storied 4,500-square-foot home commands the beach front plot. Expansive rooms in a monochromatic color palate are enlivened by a staggering collection of Persian rugs in jewel-like colors and designs that Abrahamson has been collecting over decades. Solid furniture and accessories in wood, leather, chrome, glass, and mirror enhance a bright and pristine atmosphere with every attention to detail and comfort.

Right-angled louvered picture windows form two walls of this ambient-lit eating room which seems to float over the waters of Tampa Bay. Reminiscent of the captain’s quarters on a ship, the nautical flair is strengthened by the natural plank flooring, chunky benches, and corner tallboys. Coordinating bar-height upholstered dining chairs surround an artisan-crafted kitchen island constructed from 100-year-old salvaged wood from Great Britain that serves as the dining table. Color in this room is again provided by an Persian carpet, illuminated by another wine barrel chandelier and recessed lighting.

Abrahamson confesses, “I am somewhat obsessed with symmetry, which is reflected in the design of the kitchen. The emphasis on whites and neutrals is highlighted by Neptune Bordeaux granite countertops on all surfaces and the backsplash. The 13-foot island seats five comfortably on tufted velvet stools that tuck away neatly under the overhang. The light, airy look is seen in white-surfaced cabinetry, drawers and display cupboards, provided by Campbell Cabinetry Designs. The six-burner gas cooker incorporates a griddle and grill. Stainless steel appliances including Sub-Zero, Perlick, Asko, and Wolf provide ultra efficiency and convenience. Old Dutch and European Oak flooring from Oracle Surfaces, supplied by DuChateau Collection, flows throughout the home. Three traditional Persian runners in coordinating colors of ivory and garnet accented by blue and green lend warmth and softness.

Above: Natural plank flooring from Oracle Surfaces, rope trim molding, and the white tongue-and-groove ceiling carry over into the master bathroom. A freestanding tub is the ultimate in luxurious indulgence. Sitting beneath three long windows, this Bain Ultra model features a spa, heated backrest, air bubbles, and aromatherapy. Beyond the adjacent glass-paneled half-wall is a large shower with three showerheads, paneled porcelain walls, and a marble floor. Metal and glass étagères hold towels, toiletries and buffet lamps. The floor is covered by an intricately patterned plush Heriz rug, augmenting the air of luxury. The pièce de résistance is a crystal chandelier, directly over the bathtub, mate to the one in the bedroom. Opposite: The 1,400-square-foot master retreat on the third level has its own elevator access. A panoramic picture window frames the bay while two other shuttered windows and matching nightstands flank the bed. The natural wood floor is contrasted by the tongue-and-groove vaulted ceiling. The mid-19th century French Empire style king-sized bed made of carved and kiln-dried solid hardwoods is an impressive focal point in the room. Throw pillows in red and white geometrics echo the carpet to bring color to the monochromatic bed linens. A tan leather loveseat softened by pillow and throw is placed at an angle at the foot of the bed. Two French-inspired oyster gray chaise lounges bracket an antique walnut wood circular table, circa 1800. A smaller coordinating table sits beneath the central window. A crystal chandelier with silk shade is centered over the bed. Abrahamson describes the master bedroom as being the biggest challenge of this massive project saying “The initial design was remarkably different than the end result.”

Keystone pavers in a geometric arrangement interspersed with artificial AlternaScapes turf makes for a unique pool deck that is a work of art in itself. The eye is immediately attracted to the contrast of dark green and the chalky white that frames the vivid bright blue pool with arching fountain and the distant Bay waters. Comfortable navy-cushioned loungers sit on the sunning aprons on either side of the intricately tiled blue mosaic spa. The pool is lined with natural native vegetation of palms, flowering bushes, succulents and bromeliads. A white fence separates the beach fitted with a fire pit and loungers, a cozy spot to relax and warm up on those chilly evenings.

An energetic family of five, plus pets, requires comfortable interiors that are durable. However, that doesn’t mean they have to be dull or dreary! With a twinkle in his eye, Bill Borgelt of Dwell Interiors in Sarasota quickly labels the overall theme of this interior redesign as ‘Classic Elegance.’ Then he pauses and punctuates that, “with a twist!” Working with former clients, Borgelt was given free rein to seek the delicate balance between classic and contemporary design when he was asked to help them refresh their recently purchased home. Borgelt used basic black and cream as the foundation for much of the design, adding splashes of vibrant color and shimmering texture with contemporary artwork and accessories. Everything about the home was large — oversized windows,

architectural

columns,

and

arched

doorways. Undeterred, Borgelt found the proportions of the home to be one of his favorite things. “While nearly every area of the home demanded the use of larger than normal size furnishings and accessories, the home has just the right amount of negative space to feel gracious and inviting.”

Soaring to the full height of the two-story home, the entry introduces the warm, classic color combo of cream and black accented with richly detailed crisp white baseboards, crown molding, and trim. The large flooring tiles are laid on the diagonal, visually expanding the space. Glossy black tile squares punctuate the pattern. The oversized black iron and glass entry doors blend beautifully with the black iron and brass stair railings. A large circular mirror framed in black hangs above a stunning textured black Corbel console table by Tritter Feefer. The stone details in the entryway create an interesting visual element while a locally sourced vintage mannequin adds a whimsical and welcoming touch.

Plump cushions on the Taylor King upholstered pieces in the family room invite lounging. The original Charles Harold painting commands attention with its large size and vibrant colors. It disappears from view, however, when, at the touch of a button, the 65-inch TV rises from the custom built TV lift cabinet centered below the artwork. The cabinet houses all of the audio/ video components. “As an interior designer, I am constantly being challenged to disguise large, wall-hung TVs,” says Borgelt. “The TV lift cabinet was the perfect solution here, and the artwork is far more attractive than a TV on the wall!”

The espresso colored base cabinetry anchors the piece amidst chocolate-glazed antiqued cream floor-toceiling perimeter cabinets. Hand-scraped hardwood floors provide a rich finish underfoot. Matchstick Roman shades soften the brilliant sunlight pouring through the twin windows flanking the furniture-style range hood. Select cabinets have mullioned glass fronts for display. The gourmet kitchen is equipped with two dishwashers, a built-in refrigerator with custom panels, and a six-burner gas cooktop with pot filler. A stainless steel microwave tops the wall oven and warming drawer. Luxurious culinary touches include ample storage, a butler’s pantry, and refrigerated wine storage.

Below: This dining room delivers beautiful design from the Travertine flooring to the double-coffered ceiling. Six chairs covered in easy-care Sunbrella fabric surround an oval table, all from Hickory White. Light bounces around the long, narrow room from the wall of windows to the double mirrors to the beaded chandelier to the tablescape of mercury glass candlesticks. The mirrors, chandelier, artwork and mercury glass planter are from John-Richard. Shimmering drapes hang in elegant simplicity from a black iron pole.

The tufted upholstered bed, sleek nightstands and armless occasional chairs were pieces Borgelt sourced for the clients for their previous home. Borgelt freshened them up with new bedding and glistening mercury glass lamps. The subtle sheen of the broad vertical stripes on the unadorned walls was achieved by applying a glaze alternately over the flat paint. Plush Masland wall-to-wall carpeting underscores the luxury in this space. The master suite features his and hers baths and a morning kitchen, creating a serene retreat.

When a couple decided to winter regularly in sunny Sarasota, they purchased a 4,200square-foot luxury condominium on the Gulf of Mexico. While the views were spectacular, the unit was not, so they decided a total overhaul was needed. To help them create their vision they brought in Bonnie Lancaster of Lancaster Interior Design. The homeowners wanted a quiet and restful place, keeping the focus on the outside. The condo’s palette combines the classic seaside grays picked up on a rainy day contrasted by the aqua sea glass hues seen when the sun is shining along the coast. First and foremost, the wall separating the kitchen from the great room came down, opening up the floor plan. Next, the ‘skip trowel’ concrete ceilings had to be re-done to achieve the smooth finish desired by the new homeowners. “We had to remove the crown moldings and flatten the ceilings until they were perfectly smooth. We call it a level 5 finish,” explains builder Tim Macksey of Macksey Construction. The kitchen came next. Because it was now an open concept, finishes and fixtures had to complement the rest of the home. Patterned wallpaper on a silver foil background and dressy bar chairs with polished nickel nailhead trim help the kitchen blend into the adjacent family room. One feature which makes the kitchen special is the Calcutta marble waterfall island. “It took us 90 days to find the right piece of marble with artful veining, rather than use a homogenous piece. It looks like a giant cube of marble, with mitered edges that are book-matched,” explains Macksey.

A NORTHERN COUPLE’S COLD WEATHER RETREAT HOME & DESIGN 2016 V2

The condo’s overall design continued to evolve, with dated tile and standard wood floors replaced with wide-plank Kährs Oak. The main living area floors are primarily a driftwood-hued stain, with a contrasting four-inch perimeter border in taupe. Throughout the home, choice furnishings blend comfort and elegance to create the perfect seaside retreat for a couple escaping the harsh northern cold.

Opposite: In the kitchen, the tray ceiling works with the shape of the new waterfall island featuring cabinets finished in Benjamin Moore’s ‘Rockport Gray’. Existing cabinet boxes received new fronts and were reconfigured for improved storage, and hardware was switched from bronze to polished nickel. Subway tiles from Tile Market of Sarasota blends with the gray cabinets. The waterfall island also has deep drawers, offering extra storage. The bar chairs, from Century Furniture, are upholstered in a resilient indoor-outdoor acrylic fabric to withstand dayto-day usage and the lively times associated with their grandchildren’s visits. Previous page: In the great room, a large linenupholstered sectional by Century Furniture sits on top of a neutral tone-on-tone area rug by JF Fabrics. Pops of orange — one of the homeowners’ favorite colors — enliven the space in the vibrant artwork, as well as in a mix of leather and glass-beaded throw pillows. Armchairs in a silver leaf finish, with Zimmer + Rohde silk upholstery and contrast piping from Kravet Couture, add a touch of elegance as casual and formal elements mix in the same space.

The homeowners wanted a quiet respite in the master bedroom, along with a place to watch television. The custom console at the base of the bed holds a TV on a hydraulic lift and was designed to match the mahogany bed and chest from Century Furniture. Nightstands in a painted cream finish from Highland House Furniture contrast with the darker wood hues.

Visitors to London Bay Homes’ two-story Isabella model at The Founders Club in Sarasota tend to linger outside before venturing into the single-family estate home. Featuring coastal contemporary architecture with extended rooflines, Bahama shutters, rafters, and a columned front porch with pale yellow door frames, the fully furnished model references its proximity to Sarasota’s famed white-sand beaches and the Gulf of Mexico. The Isabella Two-Story is an expanded version of London Bay’s popular Isabella floor plan, featuring a larger ground floor and a second floor offering a bonus room, fourth bedroom, fifth full bath, and a covered balcony. The model, priced at $2,374,490, represents one of London Bay’s 18 available floor plans in the community. Celebrating 25 years, London Bay builds custom and semi-custom homes in many of the region’s most exclusive neighborhoods and communities from Marco Island to the Sarasota Keys.

“We wanted the design to embrace the warmth and elegance of the seaside,” said Jennifer Stevens, senior design director at Romanza Interior Design, who created the stunning interiors. “The palette of soft greens, bright and aqua blues, with pops of yellow and coral capture the coastal feeling.” This elegant coastal palette is accented in the great room by the addition of metal, antiqued mirror, and silver finishes. The petrified wood and reed door panels on the media unit reference the coast. A soft cream toned rug adds a casual element while the wall sconces and delicate chandelier with a brassy finish are more formal in design. The home’s emphasis on the alfresco Florida lifestyle is enhanced by walls of sliding glass doors that showcase stunning sunset views over oaks and a lake. HOME & DESIGN 2016 V2

London Bay Homes builds the majority of the homes in The Founders Club, an intimate golf and social club community offering just 262 homes and an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The Founders Club offers a grand 24,000-square-foot clubhouse, where members enjoy casual and fine dining, an active social calendar, and a fitness and wellness center. Boardwalks and walking paths meander throughout the community, which also has two Har-Tru tennis courts, basketball and sand volleyball courts, and a picnic pavilion.

White and gray backgrounds provide the canvas for sea and sunset accent colors. Artwork and art glass in vivid blues, aqua, and citron add dashes of color to the dining room. A round table seats six with cream colored chairs sporting darker trim details. The chandelier with classical lines is made more casual by the driftwood materials and visible light bulbs. A greige-tone buffet adds storage and serving space. Opposite: The well-appointed kitchen has alabaster-finished maple cabinetry, speckled gray granite countertops, and glass tile backsplashes, punctuated by the navy, soft blues, and greens in the diamond-patterned fabric of three stools cozied up to the freestanding island breakfast bar. Upper cabinetry features square glass doors showcasing a lighted interior, and a sunshine yellow painted finish. Stainless steel appliances and two industrial-styled brass pendants with nickel finishing above the island add glimmer to the room.

Above: The master bath takes a cue from the kitchen, with alabaster-finished cabinetry, white quartz countertops and a floor the color of sun-bleached driftwood. A dressing table separates his-and-her vanities, and a custom built-in features shelves set against mosaic tile glass in muted colors of the model’s main palette. The large bathroom leaves ample space for a sculptural tub and a glass enclosed shower. Opposite: The master suite shines with a silver and gold leaf finished chandelier. The modern motif of the polished stainless steel, four-poster, king-size bed complements an antique pewter colored dresser and night stands. The weathered look of the wood floor balance the room and is covered with a soft area rug which warms the space. White bedding and upholstered wing chairs in the seating area are accented with a muted shade of apple-green.

The bonus room provides almost unlimited possibilities for extra living space. In the Isabella model, the room has been turned into an upstairs lounge space, which serves as the perfect place for kids and guests to have a private area of their own. A comfortable oversized white couch sprots bright pillows which echo the greens and blues found downstairs. A neutral and durable carpet is placed under the distressed wood media stand. The bonus room has an outdoor area. “You can see the spark of imagination ignite when a homebuyer steps into a bonus room for the first time,” said Nairnsey. “It provides the ultimate customization to reflect hobbies and lifestyles.”

SUNSHINE mid-century A WINTER REFUGE ON LONGBOAT KEY

124

HOME & DESIGN 2016 V2

B

Before owners Will and Betsy built their vacation home in Longboat Key, they visited the canal side homesite on Sarasota Bay in all four seasons to see the positioning of the sun. “We live in an old stone farmhouse in Pennsylvania, so creating a refuge from winter with plenty of sunlight was our top priority,” says Will. The couple worked with custom builder Murray Homes and interior design firm Apex-Studio Santa Maria to create their 3,300-square-foot dream house. “Style-wise, we made the home as different from our farmhouse as possible, with a completely modern vibe,” explains Will. Interior designer Ana Santa Maria from ApexStudio Santa Maria was brought in early on the project. “The goal was to create a cohesive design inside and out,” she explains. “The result is a sleek residence that, in true mid-century style, integrates the outside environment with interior living spaces beautifully. And while the home is typical of the architecture of that era, it has all the latest technology.” Although the home’s elevation appears to be two stories, its split interior is three levels with a guest suite on the second level and two additional bedrooms on the third floor. Barrier island living is brought to life with the use of native stone, exotic woods, and ample windows to take advantage of waterfront views. The owners leaned heavily on Steve Murray, President, of Murray Homes, and and Michael Tuttle, his Project Manager as the two helped them bridge the 1,200-mile gap between their northern farmhouse and their new winter home. “We were able to use our computer program which

creates

customizable

renderings,

allowing changes to be made in real time with the client,” explains Murray. This program became especially important when trying to decide between terrazzo and wood flooring. “There is a dramatic difference between the

HOME & DESIGN 2016 V2

125

structural engineering needed for wood versus terrazzo. This program allowed the owners to feel comfortable with their choice.” Ultimately, what Will and Betsy visualized is a place where they, along with their children and grandchildren, could come together in one big open living space. This welcoming home is a destination sure to be appreciated for generations.

Opposite: A major focal point of the home and favorite feature of the owners is the great room fireplace. Coral Keystone brings a feeling of the ocean inside. Blocks were custom cut to align with the Fry Reglet stainless steel bands that run through the made-to-order wenge wood panels. The same design is carried throughout the home’s Milano interior doors, which feature silver detail and an espresso finish. A floating bench of Caesarstone raven quartz completes the horizontal composition, offering space for accessories and an inviting place to sit. Terrazzo floors throughout the first level bring an Old-Florida feel to the house while keeping the flow and openness of the midcentury style. They are also a low maintenance material. The glass tables and contemporary furnishings from Home Resource provide a neutral backdrop for colorful paintings from the Grace Howl Art Gallery. Previous page: The mid-century modern exterior makes a striking statement in the neighborhood, but did create a dilemma for the clients. “While they wanted a modern home, they were worried it wouldn’t fit in the neighborhood. We were able to create the architectural feel they were after while building a home that didn’t look out of place,” says Murray. The horizontal lines of the roof repeat across the front elevation from the inset trim and narrow clerestory windows on the left to the balcony railings on the right. The mahogany front door also features horizontal planks. The door, chosen for its large scale to match the volume of the structure, has a custom stain. The geometric landscaping is simple, yet inviting.

Above: The same finishes found in the kitchen are used in the martini bar. Color LED lighting shines through the glassware. Deep horizontal drawers house a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer. Upper cupboard doors continue the sleek lines and open with a slight push. The glass tabletop and sculptural base and chairs from Home Resource add to the feeling of spaciousness. With an emphasis on entertainment and the outdoors, the entire back of the house opens up with doors to the lanai and the canal beyond. Sliders open fully and the dining room and covered lanai become one living area that displays the interior’s integration with the environment. Opposite: The kitchen merges into the living area without any barriers. “Coming from a tiny farmhouse kitchen, we wanted a large space where everyone could be cooking and preparing together,” explains the owners. The pure white Caesarstone quartz island allows for ample prep space. The glass induction cooktop emphasizes the clean lines and is placed away from the island to allow maximum workspace for family and guests. All outlets are hidden from view, and small appliances are stored in cabinets to keep the kitchen uncluttered. The richness of exotic sapele wood adds texture to the minimalist kitchen. With little ornamentation, the beauty in the details shine. Custom cabinets by Campbell Cabinetry Designs contrast the Atlas Concorde porcelain tile backsplash. The smooth finishes of leather and chrome bar stools add vintage charm. White pendant lamps are Rhythm Suspension Lights from LBL Lighting.

Thanks to the homeowners’ scouting trips and careful planning by the team, the pool is bathed by the sun during the winter. The deep blue pool has a sun shelf for lounging and wading. The stairs were run across the entire width of the pool, offering even more space for cooling off and relaxing. Angular landscaping beds add hints of green yet require minimum maintenance. The pool terrace is concrete cast with shells for yet another touch of nature.

HOME & DESIGN 2016 V2

W

When the clients asked Ed Biggs of Biggs Design Group to create the interior of their newest Sarasota home, it was a grand reunion. Biggs has designed their primary Ohio residence, their penthouse office suite, and a prior Sarasota home, so a comfortable rapport was present. “After all this time I’ve gotten to know their taste, their lifestyle, and the things that make them smile,” said Biggs. “They like a little bit of whimsy in everything they do.” Once they bought the 6,500-square-foot home, Biggs’ clients — a former Miss Ohio and cosmetic company CEO and her busy national radio show host husband — wanted to put their stamp on the property. With no desire to change the landscaping or architecture of the palatial West Indian-influenced home, Biggs started by adding something unexpected to the front entrance: a lifesize fiberglass black sheep, grazing on the top step. “The sheep lets people know right off that these owners take life lightheartedly and have lots of fun,” says Biggs. “That’s why I so enjoy working with them.”

French doors open into a foyer featuring a quartet of columns covered in hundreds of glimmering silver gray and black glass tiles. Two Mercury glass urns from The Phillips Collection reflect the light from the glass block walls. Down the marble steps into the living room, visitors are greeted by a wire figurine seated on a bright red classic marshmallow bench. The walnut mirror sits above a curvy walnut and glass console, topped with an abstract fish sculpture from the Phillips Collection. An ultrasuede sectional in vanilla floats on the dark sisal area rug. It joins the oversized black granite cocktail table from Stone International and the tiny hammered metal drink table from Interlude, declared “indispensable” by the designer.

Above: Dark wood and metal chairs from Artistica are covered in ivory Ultrasuede and surround the 72inch round table that seats eight. Hand-blown glass male and female sculptures decorate a corner. No window treatments, besides built-in solar shades, were used, to make the most of the lush landscaping surrounding the home. The room’s show-stopping element is the bronze and gold leaf Vertigo Chandelier by Corbett, which hangs from the ceiling via a custom taupe ceiling cloud. The impressive lighting here, and throughout the home, was sourced through LyteWorks.

Opposite: The kitchen with Sub-Zero and Jenn-Air appliances came with the home. Its blonde Norwegian wood cabinets, dark quartz countertops, and mosaic pendant lights stayed in place, allowing Biggs to show the workmanship of his shop by sourcing the metal stools and having them upholstered in woven metallic silver fabric for a bit of glitz and lots of durability.

Above: A custom-built cloud suspends an LED circle chandelier from Sonneman above the custom oval freestanding tub in the master bath. The platform is made of taupe, gray and white glass and marble circular tile with fiberglass and ceramic abstract sculptural pieces in black and white. The floor, shower, and countertop are clad in travertine and dark European oak cabinetry and mirror surrounds provide contrast. Inset sconces of glass and metal provide an art deco touch and illuminate the African head art next to the sink. Fixtures in this stylish bath were provided by The Plumbing Place. Opposite: Biggs decked the bed with contrasting shades of european oak in custommade bedding from his Sarasota workroom. The Duralee all-cotton fabric sports shades of orange, taupe and copper. The sham pillows are in a Duralee cut velvet. The curved Wyman chaise is upholstered in nubby paprika tweed and is fronted by an acrylic “Z” table from Interlude. The six abstract paintings over the wall-mounted dresser were locally sourced and flanking the bed are 7-foot-tall sculptures of a female and male figures. Live grass tops a 36-inch round jar of coconut shells with steel banding next to the Brazilian leather recliner and another of the “indispensable” metal tables. Window treatments are limited to Scandia solar electronic shades to preserve the light, and a textured tonal Fabrica carpet completes the room.

Here, Biggs chose an extra long custom sectional and wave shaped ottoman designed by Dellarobbia in tomato red butter-soft leather. A set of nutmeg leather recliners from Brazil provides additional seating. To the right of the recliners is a circle of bent rattan. The two sculptures on either side of the fireplace, from the Phillips Collection, are 7-feet-tall and made of woven wicker. The tapestry is from the owners’ collection. Artistic Indonesian oil drum lids create an intriguing sculptural wall hanging above the walnut wall unit hosting the 75-inch TV. The fireplace itself is fronted in Florida limestone. The custom walnut and granite coffee table invites visitors to put their feet up and relax. The Berber carpet is from Masland.

The multi-level home is best appreciated from the pool deck, where a giant rubber ducky floats in the mosaic pool. Brown Jordan furniture is covered in silver mesh fabric, and just beyond the umbrella in the background is a sectional upholstered in stripes of tomato and white. 164

COASTAL craftsman

A CASUAL BEACH RETREAT

W

With style well-suited to its Anna Maria Island location, this coastal craftsman provides a laid-back and spacious retreat for family getaways and gatherings. The home’s interior designer, Suzan Hritz of SHS Design in Sarasota, says this three-story residence with Gulf of Mexico views is all about “beach casual” and “take your shoes off and be comfortable” style. Consisting of 3,139 square feet of air conditioned space right on the beach, the home has two upper-level living areas as well as an enclosed first level bonus room. Outdoor spaces, ranging from balconies and patios to covered outdoor entertaining areas, expand the usable space by another 1,200 square feet. The residence features four bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths. Hritz says the house is all about unifying the indoors with the outdoors. “We maximized natural light in each room,” she explains. “We used Sunbrella fabrics both indoors and outdoors, and most finishes are designed to take the wear and tear of a vacation home filled with family and friends,” Hritz notes. The colors of the beach sunset were her inspiration. Soft grays, vibrant corals, cool turquoise, and washed woods fill each room. “I love the accessories in this house,” Hritz says. “I went to markets and bought what I liked and then put them where I thought they should go.” Reflecting the calming style she sought for a beach retreat, she remarks the design came together so easily, “like it was meant to be.” Hritz says that’s what she truly loves about this house. “It’s so livable,” she exclaims, noting it reflects her own personal design sense where things feel comfortable and worry-free while still being stylish. “Anna Maria is a very casual beach town,” she says. “It’s more about flip-flops and T-shirts than golf courses and dumbwaiters. We wanted this house to reflect that, so we kept the look organic.”

Oppostie: The living room is the standout in the house, carrying all the themes and colors that unite this residence in a harmonious whole. “The interior colors were selected to reflect the softness of the sand and the vibrant sunsets we so often enjoy along the Gulf Coast,” Hritz says. As with most of the rooms in the home, the living room features wall colors of Benjamin Moore ‘Winter White’ and trim in ‘Chantilly Lace’. DuChateau’s Vernal Collection antique white floors outfit the entire home, accented in this room by a Surya area rug that pulls the colors of the ocean, sky, and beach all together in a single textile. A custom-made sofa by TSC Design and a pair of Stanford chairs face the solid stone contemporary-style gas fireplace. The unique cocktail table by Interlude features a painted metal fretwork design. Previous page: Situated beachfront with low-maintenance landscaping of palms and native beach flora, this threestory residence features stucco and James Hardie lap siding exteriors as well as Andersen high impact glass windows to provide a façade capable of enduring the elements of beach life. A curling staircase leads from the pool and patio to the second level living area’s covered deck while another balcony and a widow’s walk are accessible from the third floor. All of the home’s common areas, including the living room, dining room, and kitchen feature expansive windows and glass doors overlooking the Gulf to maximize the seaside views.

The kitchen features custom-made cabinets by Epoch Solutions, Inc., with a washed driftwood look to keep the space casual. To add a touch of sophistication, Hritz selected polished nickel finishes for the faucet fixtures as well as the cabinet door and drawer handles. The Hinkley hanging light fixtures are also polished nickel while the granite countertops sport a white speckled finish called ‘Rice Spring.’ The unique bar stools also feature a washed wood finish and are by Bungalow 5. Hritz says the kitchen is one of her favorite spaces in the house. “I like the idea of being able to stand in the kitchen working and look outdoors,” she explains.

The dining room is bright and airy with a wall of glass doors overlooking the beach. Settings and table accessories are by Mélange Home. The eye-catching oyster shell chandelier is by Currey & Company, which drops scintillating light onto the contemporary table and host chairs by Brownstone. The remaining four seagrass chairs are by Selamat Designs. Hritz finished the room with a conversation piece console table of washed driftwood by Ibolili. “I chose the furniture and decor based on what I thought I would enjoy in a beach house,” Hritz notes. “I would want to be able to relax and entertain without worrying about wear and tear.”

Above: The sleek and modern master bathroom provides bathtub views of the Gulf framed by walls of Arctic Gray. Pendant lights by Sonneman illuminate the sinks and granite countertops in Azul Iran. Lustrous stainless fixtures by Moen add to the room’s contemporary feel. The deep soaking tub is white acrylic. Opposite: The master bedroom showcases a unique washed seagrass bed by Four Hands that looks like it was made for the room. Hritz says finding the right bed was a challenge because of the triplex of windows, which limited the headboard height to 54 inches. “But I love the bed,” she adds. “Gray is my color. I just fell in love with this piece when I saw it.” The area rug is by Surya. The eclectic seahorse tables were a bit of an accident that worked out quite well. “They were supposed to go in another room but didn’t work there,” Hritz says. “They ended up in here where they just seemed to fit.” On top of each seahorse nightstand are glass lamps which provide a soft light, keeping the room breezy and weightless.

Behind the house is the patio area with Caribbean shell stone floor. A Bassett sectional is covered in Sunbrella fabric to withstand sun, rain, and salt. “That way you can sit on the furniture in your wet bathing suit, too,” says Hritz. The outdoor dining table is by 18 KARAT, while the concrete and chrome coffee tables come from Four Hands. Under the porch on the stucco exterior wall is a diptych on acrylic by Art Classics called “School of Fish.” Surrounded by lush vegetation, the back patio offers privacy and seclusion despite the home’s location on a corner lot.
