And the winners are… many of the talented and creative luxury home professionals we feature in Home & Design. This year we have applauded and supported our local design champions who made their way to the stage at the annual award events. The Auroras, the Sand Dollars, the Pinnacles, all reminded us that great design is alive and well in Southwest Florida. We are so proud of all the forward-thinking, innovative nominees and winners, and we published many of them here in the January 2014 issue. Being identified by your peers for your professional efforts is always a tremendous source of personal validation. It is truly an exhilarating feeling! We too have been tallying votes. We asked readers, and the results are in. The Home & Design Reader’s Choice Awards for our most beautiful images of 2013 have now been chosen. The readers have spoken, and they have selected 10 of the most captivating projects featured among our pages. Congratulations to all the winners of this contest featured on page 334. This has also been a winning year for the growth of the Home & Design brand. We are thrilled with the success of our first Design Issue last year, and are currently identifying submissions for the 2014 Design Issue coming this April. Continuing this brand expansion, we are pleased to announce the Home & Design Suncoast Edition launching concurrently in the Sarasota market this January. If you have a noteworthy home or have designed one, please send your submissions directly to me for consideration. Here’s to another year of greatness. Warmly,

Cinnabar Design’s Laurie Walter and Diana Hall with me at the Aurora Awards. Their sleek, contemporary ‘La Castille’ model in Quail West, built by Castle Harbour Homes, picked up numerous awards. See the project on page 134.

Enough has been said about how the Southwest Florida market is active and bustling. I’d like to point out how busy the very small group of people are that make Home & Design a reality for you. The copy of Home & Design you are reading is the result of this talented group. It begins by combing our market to find the finest homes. Dozens of homes are submitted for each issue, and a rigorous vetting process takes place to select the perfect mix of styles, types, and designs. We aim to give our readers the most complete overview of the architectural and home decor styles in our area. Once selected, each home has to be photographed. Every shoot is the culmination of skillful preparation, staging, and lighting to ensure that what you see in Home & Design can’t be seen anywhere else. Then they meet with hundreds of Southwest Florida’s premier home product and service providers to help them properly present themselves to you. Our goal at Home & Design is to introduce you to the very finest companies in the market for your every home buying, building, improving, and interior design need. Then comes the hard part, actually locking the doors and putting it all together. Long, long hours are spent with graphic design, photography, and layout pros sorting through hundreds of choices to present you with the very best. And I have to say, Home & Design meets or exceeds the quality of any magazine anywhere in the country. So kudos to the very small, tireless, and talented group of people that are responsible for Home & Design. Without you, I’d have to work.

A talented group of luxury home experts joined forces with Home & Design to collectively design the home of Greg and Kristen Griffin in Olde Naples. The Griffins, principals of the renowned Foresite Homes, built this home for themselves and their new baby, Gregory. When Home & Design toured the empty home six months ago, an idea was born, the first ever “Home & Design Signature Home.” This is the first project in what will be an annual tradition that partners the magazine with a carefully selected dream team to decorate a home together. Equally exciting to all involved was the process itself. Design team Wilfredo Emanuel and Susan Petril of Clive Daniel Home, residential designer Rich Guzman of R.G. Designs, Steve and Kathleen Cantera and the Griffins all of Foresite Homes, Bob Ostrowski of AlliKristé Custom Cabinetry & Kitchen Design, Thomas Threlkeld from Nassau Pools, Sam Crow of W.A.F. Finish Carpentry, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, and Linda Donnelly and Kelsey Miklavcic of Home & Design comprised this elite inaugural group. Each individual brought their own creative inspiration, so the real challenge was finding which direction was best for the charming couple that gets to live there happily ever after. Since Cantera and Griffin —with over 50 years combined experience—have built over a thousand homes, with sixty in the Olde Naples area, they had a specific vision for the style they wanted for this personal project. They knew Rich Guzman was the perfect designer to draw the plans. Having partnered

together on many homes already, the ‘marriage’ of Foresite and R.G. Designs has worked effortlessly over the years. For their own home, the Griffins wanted a modern twist on a more traditional floor plan. “We had lived in the open ‘great room’ plan in the past, and this time we wanted things a bit more formal,” explains Kristen Griffin. “We wanted the spaces to flow well into one another,” adds Greg Griffin. One thing is for certain, Foresite homes ‘live’ well. Guzman credits Foresite with fully understanding the market in Southwest Florida. “Together,” Guzman says, “we brainstorm to find the right concept with the freshest approach to customizing homes for this market.” And this 4,800 square-foot home (under air) is the quintessential Olde Naples coastal cottage, with charming architectural details such as the dual pitched roof, standing seam metal roof, Bahamian shutters, and wide plank hardi-board siding. “Ultimately, it takes the best of all the projects we’ve done together, and puts them all in one house,” concludes Guzman. According to lead designer Emanuel, “The inspiration was ‘New Hamptons.’ I wanted the design to be fresh, yet eclectic urban chic, mixing wrought iron with glam crystals, driftwood chairs with crushed velvet, tufted upholstery. I anchored the design with the Griffins’ favorite colors and styles, then brought it to a whole new level. Many of the pieces we created and combined are art by themselves. Together they are a truly custom design for this family,” adds Emanuel. “The Aqua Chianti, Chihuly-like, blown glass chandelier by Cyan in the formal living room exactly mimics the unique electric blue of the pool water seen through the French doors onto the patio,” describes Miklavcic. “It really takes a bold design risk that I am proud to say, completely works,” adds Miklavcic. Petril selected the fabulous embroidered Kravat drapes that flank the large doors from the living room out to the veranda. Punctuating the room with style, many of the accessories are from Ralph Lauren Home. The structured Noir couch covered in a blue/grey Lillian August fabric creates a more tailored companion to the rustic Cyan driftwood block chairs, cleverly done in tufted crushed velvet, with accents of chartreuse and chocolate brown. Through the formal living room and into the family’s informal living space, kitchen, and breakfast nook, the décor takes a rustic direction. An exposed brick wall and pale grey painted barn doors are a stylish nod to farmhouse chic. The Ralph Lauren Home pool table inspired coffee table is an interesting conversation piece, and the three different birdcage Chateau light fixtures of varying heights keep the interest sparked.

The formal living room is a perfect representation of urban chic. The structured Noir couch covered in a blue/grey Lillian August fabric creates a more tailored companion to the rustic Cyan driftwood block chairs, cleverly done in tufted crushed velvet, with accents of chartreuse. Striking artwork above the fireplace created by Leland Brinkman is from his liquid metal alchemy collection.

When Bob Ostrowski of AlliKristé made his cabinet, hardware, color, and surface selections for this simple white cook’s kitchen, he chose techniques to allow the space to have its own style and character. “Simple can mean more than just white cabinets. To pull this off we introduced other materials such as glass doors, wainscot panels, and stainless boots at the island legs,” explains Ostrowski. Since AlliKristé cabinetry is all custom, they can transform the space into a highly personalized expression of the client’s needs. The Griffins designed their kitchen with the latest style and design components. The formal dining room is a study in opposites. The wrought-iron chandelier base is rustic, but paired with three sparkling rows of prism crystals that are decidedly ‘glam.’ The farmhouse dining table is earthy, while the linen, skirted dining chairs are tailored. The custom finish carpentry details, created by Crow of W.A.F., include hand-crafted Colonial columns with carved capitals and are offset by the Natural Hickory, random length wood floor. Built-in shelves flanking the bay window are almost Puritan with their clean lines and purely white accessories. The collage of white urns, vases, whimsical animals and interesting shapes was the brainstorm of Miklavcic. “I love the purity of white. There are so many colors and textures happening in the rest of the rooms, I wanted white to make the statement here,” describes Miklavcic. The master bedroom has an ethereal quality that is unparalleled. “The Griffins feel at peace in this room, waking up to a crystal chandelier swagged across and through the actual canopy of the bed frame itself, a unique approach to overhead lighting indeed,” adds Emanuel. “That black, iron, Old Biscayne canopy bed was hand-forged on a pecan farm in Georgia. And the 100-year old Chinese antique end tables make fitting book ends for the window seat,” adds Petril. The intricate, tongue-and-groove, beam ceiling detail was expertly crafted by Crow. “That ceiling really made all the difference in that room. I love the way it adds that finishing touch of fine craftsmanship of which this home certainly has no shortage,” says Crow.

Through any number of doorways off the main rooms, the view depicts a casual, yet stylish approach to al fresco life. The classic rectangular pool shape designed and built by Threlkeld of Nassau Pools, serves as the traditional element with its spouting streams of water choreographed from the pool’s coping. But the unexpected edgy choice at pool’s end of the white bed suggests the iconic Fontainbleu in Miami. Crow took that area one step further by building a custom trellis surrounding the bed that offers shade, style, and design elegance. One can only imagine the relaxation of reclining in the shade on that white cushioned bed with a good book. Just add a chartreuse cashmere throw and the calming sounds of the water streams arching into the blue pool before you, and you will soon realize you are living in your dream home. A truly ‘custom’ home design means that every detail chosen has come together in a unique and personalized way. This first ever “Home & Design Signature Home,” featured on this year’s Naples Garden Club “House and Garden Tour,” is a custom project that combined the talents and expertise of over a dozen talented people who came together over five months of planning. The team melded their individual perspectives into one unified result. The final product is simply stunning.

La Playa With five bedrooms, seven and a half bathrooms, and 10,000-plus square feet of luxury living— including an immaculately appointed guesthouse— La Playa is a sprawling, yet serene, beachside manor where comfort and style live in harmony. When it came time to build their dream home, La Playa’s savvy year-round residents enlisted the help of Stofft Cooney architects, Collins & DuPont Interior Design and BCB Homes to bring their vision to life. The original inspiration for a beach-loving family was to combine the best of East Coast resort styles. Lap siding and a metal roof with wood bracketing evoke Old Florida. The heavy timber post and beam structure call to mind Nantucket, and the courtyard is a nod to Low Country. The challenge was in blending these ideas into a seamless design with low maintenance materials befitting an active and growing family. La Playa is not only beautifully regal, it is also incredibly secure. A concrete roof, one of the largest and steepest of its kind to be installed on a private residence, ensures that the structure will withstand whatever weather the Gulf throws its way.

Above — The kitchen’s tongue-and-groove ceiling and peachy limestone floors make the biggest room in the house feel homey and warm. Opposite — A beautiful entryway and bulit-in bleached maple storage nook and table allows family members and guests to stash their keys, bags, and shoes.

That roof posed an exciting challenge to the builders because the concrete had to be poured over a steep pitch and then covered with metal so the underlying material would not be visible. “The roof and its particular specifications was a major highlight of the project,” says BCB Vice President Greg Brisson. “We took the homeowner’s concept and came up with an incredibly robust and strong structure.” As with other beachfront property, the structure also had to be elevated. The ground floor houses a six-car garage, and the entry lobby features stairs and an elevator leading the way up to the main floor living space. One of the challenges in designing a spacious home such as this one is in keeping the look “homey.” This was done in part by managing the proportions of the rooms to a comfortable scale and by using reclaimed woods and soft linens for a textured, casual look. It begins with the inner “landing pad,” where a built-in bleached maple storage nook and table provide a place for shoes, hats and cell phones, and extends through the living spaces where the furniture is easygoing and approachable.

“We wanted the feel to be very relaxed, very comfortable,” says DuPont. “The fabrics are all soft, with a washed finish that you want to touch.” The neutral palette of gray blues, ivories and beiges and bountiful streaming natural light are a constant reminder of the beach, inside and out. While the windows on the outside are proportional, their elevation is in keeping with the home’s traditional style. The Gulf facing walls are full of large windows that capture the stunning views. “When we build a beachfront or waterfront residence, we try to take advantage of every opportunity to capitalize on the water views. My goal in developing the floor plan, was to allow as many of the rooms a glimpse of this seascape, even the guest bedrooms,” says architect John Cooney. This attention to the view carries on throughout the home to include the great room, office, kitchen, dining area, bar and master bedrooms as well. Limestone floors and tongue-and-groove wood ceiling beams, which cleverly disguise AC registers, lend a rustic warmth to the kitchen and eating area, while a marble-topped island with second sink, and recessed coffee bar with camouflaged mini-fridge and freezer offers modern conveniences.

The formal dining room is dominated by a custom-built walnut table and English-style chairs. Crisp white wainscoting, a Niermann Weeks chandelier with matching sconces, and a beachscape painting from the owners’ personal collection accent the monochromatic swath of golden sand. With its soothing sitting area, the master suite echoes the themes of the house: reclaimed European white oak wood flooring, cypress ceiling, gauzy drapery and soft colors. “We chose to tuck the television away and stick with quiet hues, so that nothing would interfere with the phenomenal view,” DuPont says. “We went for a soft, neutral space with a monochromatic layering of colors.” The master bath has a dual entry shower tucked behind the vanity, marble and limestone floor, and built-in cabinetry from Nantucket. A second, al fresco shower lies just outside the shuttered door. The detached, one-bedroom guesthouse sits east of the main house, capped by its own concrete roof. Inside, the fully outfitted kitchen overlooks stunning mature Magnolia trees, active plantings, butterfly garden, golf course-quality lawns and fountains, all modeled after Charleston and Savannah-style courtyards. “We brought

in stunning trees and plantings. The landscaping is incredibly well planned to offer a year-round view that is very richly detailed,” says Brisson. On the ocean side of the house is a lagoon-shaped pool and spa amid handset stone decks. Surrounded by swaying palms, the living space includes an outdoor fireplace, bar, well-shaded sitting area and deceptively simple-looking Native American-built chickee hut with television, stereo and wifi. Here as elsewhere, an extremely sensitive Savant smart-home automation system allows the owners to control lights, hurricane shutters, pool heater, televisions, sound systems and more remotely. Perhaps the smartest feature of all, however, is the pergola covered security gate to the beach, which doubles as beach chair storage and foot wash.

artful living The Villa Sul Verde model home in the Talis Park community in Naples is a crowning jewel in ‘Fairgrove,’ the beautiful tree-lined neighborhood just beyond the front gates. Built and conceptualized by Iron Star Luxury Homes, this 3,500 square-foot model home has already won two Sand Dollar awards in the $1.75M to $2M category, one for Best Flooring and the other for its Interior Design. Iron Star, a boutique building company, led by Principal Laurie Tobin, is a preferred builder at Talis Park, and caters to its clients with in-house artisans and its own design center. From the outside, this eclectic Spanish stucco structure with a clay barrel tile roof appears to have two stories because the central core of the home rises up over the handsome entry porch. The paved tile courtyard framed with indigenous plantings and an expansive, air-conditioned, threecar garage creates grand curb appeal. Then inside, a light-filled great room commands the eye with its 26-foot floor-to-ceiling fireplace at one end and a spectacular counter-to-ceiling backsplash tile at the other.

One of the most dramatic features upon entering the home is the suspended, wood beam ceiling grid, featured in the central open floor plan. “The outdoor views are maximized by creating these volume ceilings and opening up as much space as possible to bring the outdoors in,” describes Tobin. With 90-degree pocketing doors, all the main living rooms open up to the outdoor spaces providing awe-inspiring entertainment experiences and uninterrupted views of the palm, coconut, and weeping hibiscus trees and the sprawling golf course beyond. “When you walk through the ten-foot iron door, you see it right away, the grand dimensions of the living room,” says Rebekah Errett-Pikosky, designer at Clive Daniel Home and part of the design team on this project. “It’s not typical of Florida homes, so it really evokes a reaction.” Design partner, Charlie Hansen adds, “To me, the volume speaks volumes. There’s a true grandeur to this space, and that made it exciting to us.” Hansen and Errett-Pikosky chose a sophisticated, rich interior concept with a foundation in a unifying gray tone. From the flooring, to the variegated tile, to the painted walls and ceiling, to the weathered wood furniture, the recurring tones of gray anchor the design and are beautifully complemented by pops of chartreuse and heather blue. “When this house was designed, it was intended to create a space that was ideal for entertaining and that framed this amazing vista which stretches on into perpetuity,” says developer John Hillman of Kitson Partners. “The vision was for a home owner who really wanted to entertain, both indoors and out,” adds Hillman. The designers’ color scheme began with the dining room—its chartreuse striped seagrass wallpaper, in particular. “We selected that hue almost immediately,” Errett-Pikosky says. “It was so invigorating and fresh, with a beautiful texture that set a playful but contemporary tone for the rest of the house.” Armless light blue linen upholstered chairs encircle a glass-topped round table overlooking the front porch’s fossilized granite water feature. An oversized cantilevered light fixture crowns the room with a weathered-white accent.

“Low maintenance luxury” Pompeii Quartz can be just as beautiful as granite or marble, as shown here in this gorgeous kitchen and provided by United Materials, Inc. The great room’s kitchen continues to take full advantage of its ceiling height, white cabinetry, and a Medieval scale hood range stretching to the upper windows. There are two quartz-topped islands; one made more functional for cooking with a deep sink, and the other stretching to a waterfall edge over upholstered saddle stools for snacking onlookers. The quartz and gray-wash cabinetry is echoed in the adjacent inset bar area. “We were able, because of the kitchen’s scale, to accommodate a full-size Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer. It’s rare for a kitchen to have that,” Hansen says. The “low maintenance luxury” Pompeii Quartz can be just as beautiful as granite or marble, provided by United Materials, Inc. The best part is the fact that it is an extremely hard surface, non-porous, and doesn’t need to have additional sealer applied to it over time. The yellow hue recurs in the most casual of the three bedrooms, where a custom-painted dresser mimics the coral scrollwork of the bed linens and a plush upholstered bed offers a cozy nesting spot. The entire home is wired for sound with speakers in every room, so music can be enjoyed throughout. The master bedroom returns to the theme of serene grays and creams, another stately ceiling feature, and metallic seagrass wallpaper presiding over the sturdy but soft upholstery. The master bath is dominated by an oversize glass shower trimmed with bands of blue and teal glass tile and mosaic tile floor, and matching vanities with sea foam green cabinetry. Living up to its name, the bonus room is a sprawling spread of highstyle comfort. Ikat armchairs and an antique Chinese sideboard suggest global wanderings. The wall of wood panels interlocked with mirrored stripes and the trio of hanging glass pendants compliment the geometric

ceiling pattern. Glass doors telescope ninety degrees, leading out to the arched lanai with a cozy, yet dramatic, stone fireplace—another prime space for lounging and dining. The entertainment possibilities extend to the pool area with an outdoor kitchen featuring a Wolf grill and Sub-Zero refrigerator, a bubbling hot tub, and a pool with iridescent tile. The pool features a “fire and ice” theme, as the bowls of glass ‘ice’ flanking the pool actually become torches when lit. “The outdoor living space with this home is truly exceptional. The end result is that of a 5-Star resort,” concludes Tobin.

The La Castille in Quail West, built by Castle Harbour Homes, is a gorgeous 4,100 square-foot home, designed for the affluent homebuyer who enjoys playing golf and entertaining. This home is the quintessential environment for a discerning couple, reflecting a lifestyle of which some only dream. Architectural curb appeal with custom blended ledge rock, and a grand iron and glass front door set the tone for this unique residence. John Dennis Miehle, President and CEO of Castle Harbour Homes says, “I am a fan of modern architecture, however, the majority of Naples and Fort Myers homebuyers are somewhat conservative. I had to find a balance between my buyers and my passion. I wanted cleaner lines, a bolder entry, and cladding materials that complimented that feel. I wanted to use more geometric lines, larger square windows instead of arches, and square instead of rounded columns.”

The stunning exterior of the home features clean lines, deep rich colors, and rustic stones.

in a sophisticated, neutral color scheme. A modern application of warm, organic architectural features is what sets La Castille apart from so many other homes on the market today. “I am proud to say that everyone compliments the flooring in this home. It is a hand-scraped cerused grey oak, accented with stone and glass thresholds,” says Laurie Walter and Diana Hall of Cinnabar Design, the team responsible for the award-winning interiors.

Something surprising awaits those who enter its doors.

Upon entering the main living area, you are greeted by the great room feature wall. “We wanted to incorporate the geometric designs and horizontal lines that are consistently featured throughout the home and are reminiscent of an organic, yet transitional, Frank Lloyd Wright style,” explains Walter. Flanked by “Lloyd Wright” inspired tone-on-tone applied molding millwork with amazing dimension and interest, the latte travertine marble soars in the center. The flush mounted gas fireplace adds warmth as well as a memorable and sleek design aesthetic. The curved sectional wrapped with metal and glass consoles is a memory point that creates an organic flow between the entry and outdoor living area. Guests feel welcome to sit down on the circular sofa, relax, and enjoy the captivating feature wall.

The kitchen design is beautiful while remaining practical. It includes a special feature that is sure to surprise anyone who looks in the pantry. The kitchen perimeter countertop was fabricated by HB Marble and Granite in a quartz toffee with a pencil edge. The kitchen island countertop is a quartz vortium with a pencil edge.

Traditional silhouettes are updated with light woods and metallic finishes found in both the furniture and textiles.

Anchoring the spacious kitchen is an oversized center island, providing any chef with more than enough space to create the perfect gourmet meal while entertaining guests. “If I can incorporate interior features that present themselves differently than more traditional ways, I am not afraid to give it a try,” says Miehle. The kitchen pantry is a perfect example of this. Usually when entering a kitchen, the walk-in pantry is a very visible feature as a result of a more commonly used swing door. Cleverly, this walk-in pantry is incorporated into the cabinetry layout and utilizes millwork to conceal its appearance. “This created a cleaner look. Our guests are pleasantly surprised when they open what they believe are pull-out shelf doors, only to find a full walk-in pantry,” according to Miehle. The master suite vestibule is a modified rotunda with impressive backlit geometric ceiling detail, reminiscent of the Frank Lloyd Wright style, and softly lit by wall sconces. “Walking into the elegant bedroom, your attention is captured by a glamorous upholstered tufted bed with pendant lights suspended over grey washed nightstands,” describes Walter. The disappearing pocket doors allow the room to open up completely to the outdoors. A luxurious double chaise is cleverly angled in front of the dramatic ten-foot tall sliders boasting a scenic view of the inviting lanai and manicured golf courses. This makes for a perfect place to relax and catch up with a good book.

The gracious master bath has exquisite transitional detailing. Matte porcelain tile in 12” x 24” format adorns the main bath and shower from floor to ceiling. There is a striking contrast between the deep richness of the wood cabinetry and the soft taupe tones of the Silestone countertops. Jewel-like hardware with an Asian flair adorns the custom cabinetry. Together these elements present a cohesive look that conveys a luxurious spa-like atmosphere. The overall essence that is created is that of a peaceful retreat. The inviting outdoor living area seamlessly transitions guests from the main living space out to the expansive lanai. A palate of soft grey and sea foam blue, with the organic texture of the grey woven seating, are reflective of the interior furnishings of the home. Billowy ten-foot tall drapes frame the ledge rock clad architectural columns. A freestanding, double-sided, pre-cast fireplace is a memory point beckoning all to the seating area. The blending of different design elements to create an overall mood that is calm and soothing defines its appeal. “We think the project was so successful because of the collaboration between Cinnabar and Castle Harbour. Dennis was synergistic with our design and totally open to our ideas,” explains Hall. La Castille has already won four Aurora Awards, three Sand Dollar Awards, and one Pinnacle Award. With a clean and customized approach, one thing is for sure; this home is a jewel in the Quail West crown.

Effortless Elegance

Inspired by the seaside villas of Spain, Italy and Greece, Mediterranean style homes offer a unique mix of intrigue, flair, and sophistication. Stock Signature Homes’ Cristale estate at Quail West is no exception. After entering the circular driveway, one is immediately impressed by the expansive exterior of this impressive single story 4,427 square foot home. The strategic placement of majestic palm trees in varying heights adds an element of the dramatic, enhancing the architectural features of the home, especially the bell towers symmetrically placed on either side of the front entryway, curved archways, and sleek, driftwood-colored roof tiles. At the same time, a neutral palette of sand and gray-blue offset the theatrical, evoking an inviting, welcoming atmosphere. Cristale is luxurious, but in an understated and refined manner. In many ways, the philosophy “less is more” is applied, but only where

The exterior is loaded with curb appeal, but it doesn’t stop there. With four bedrooms, four and one half baths, parlor, family room, library/study, formal dining room, double island kitchen, outdoor living area with covered lanai, and motor court featuring a porte-cochere and 2 two-car garages, it has it all.

it is sure to have the greatest impact. “This home is a shining star in our repertoire of new homes in Naples reflecting the most current trends in today’s luxury lifestyle,” says Claudine Leger-Wetzel, VicePresident of Sales and Marketing for Stock Development. Upon entering, the foyer’s 15-foot-high ceiling creates a grand welcome. Cool, soft gray walls beautifully offset the dark wood settees flanking both sides of the entryway where two arched niches finished in chiseled stacked stone create texture, visual interest, and a centuries-old authenticity. “The interior is a fresh take on Old Florida,” describes Kaitlyn Minardo, Senior Designer at Soco Interiors in Winter Park responsible for the home’s interior design. “I was going for rustic yet classic elements.” It is a concept that is clearly

The Annual Resource Guide 2014

HomeAndDesign.net

Cottage living This traditional Old Florida style home, built in 1914, has a wealth of southern charm — but updating the home provided architects with some interesting challenges. The original bed-and-breakfast style home was inspired by the renowned ‘Naples Cottage’ visionary Kristen Williams Haseotis prior to her selling it for a record Olde Naples price in 2012. “When we took on the project, the current structure was below the FEMA elevations for construction which made tough rules come into play,” says Matthew Kragh from MHK Architects. “Because the house is so nonconforming, we had to achieve approvals to utilize the existing setbacks instead of the new ones,” says Kragh. It was a stringent process. Undeterred, the company took on the daunting task of preserving the home’s history while elevating it to today’s design standards. They began by stripping away the existing, rotting siding and replacing it with a cementitious fiberboard with a board-and-batten siding configuration. Bit by bit, they brought this home into the 21st century by adding durable Ipe Brazilian hardwood decking to the front porch and upgrading the home with impact Eagle windows.

A charming Old Florida front porch with a solid mahogany door creates a welcoming entry.

The new homeowner, a doting grandmother, desired a comfortable, livable space for her family to come in off the beach. To achieve this, she brought in the award-winning design team from Renee Gaddis Interiors. In true Florida style, the main living area is brimming with coastal flair reflected by the plentiful use of linen, and texture and accent colors of sand, water, and sky. The room’s large center table, inviting sofa, and television can be seen from the kitchen, creating the perfect area for the family to relax, converse, and unwind. “The client also wanted to incorporate some antique shutters into the room’s design, so we improvised and used them as a unique backdrop for her original Anne Packard artwork,” describes Renee Gaddis, founder and principal designer at Renee Gaddis Interiors. A touch of harvested coral was also procured by the design team to complete the room’s island-like feel. The kitchen was kept crisp and clean through the use of Shaker-style cabinetry with a solid color, painted finish. Since the space was small, plenty of design thought went into achieving as much symmetry on the back wall as possible. “We didn’t want to take up a lot of the wall space with a big, bulky appliance, so everything was done with under-counter refrigerator drawers, which was a really nice detail,” says Chris Hylemon from Hyland Custom Cabinetry, a Thomas Riley Company.

The dining room was designed around an existing, sculpture-like metal light fixture that resembles driftwood - and shines upwards, upon the ceiling. An antique reproduction table from Currey & Company with a sturdy metal base is accompanied by six dining chairs from Hickory Chair. In keeping with the metallic theme, a metal urn and zinc agave on a pedestal adorn the space. A charming light blue sideboard with chicken wire adds a bit of whimsy. Again, every effort was made to preserve the home’s historical authenticity. “We salvaged the ceiling materials, and stored them off-site for months, in order to keep it quaint,” adds Mike Assaad from Waterside Builders. “It was such a pleasure to be a part of this creatively collaborative team creating such unique projects,” adds Assaad. Designed as a special place for the client’s young granddaughter, the TV room includes an adorable baby chair tufted just for her. The TV console crafted in gray- wash wood and a distinctive antique workbench continue the seaside feel of the home – while a spacious sectional sofa and two large sconces with reclaimed wood backing create impact. The soothing blue master bedroom was designed around fashionable Ikat decorative pillows. Luxurious Ralph Lauren Home bedding on the antique bed offers the homeowner an inviting refuge. The addition of a shell mirror, oriental vase and handmade, woven rug complete the space.

The guest suite bedroom, with its own private entrance, is fun and vibrant. Round prints of coral and playful animal-esque accent pillows create the perfect getaway for visitors. The granddaughter’s room is equipped with two twin beds and incorporates playful, Indian inspired John Robshaw bedding and a Flokati rug. A blue chandelier over the nightstand, instead of in the middle of the room, adds unexpected pizzazz. The French inspired main powder bath is elegant, but comfortable. A beautiful abalone-shell mirror by Made Goods and faux candelabra give the room a bit of oomph. The granddaughter’s bath incorporates form and function. A green garden stool not only provides a pop of color, but enables her to reach the sink easily. The interior design of the guesthouse was built around the room’s antique plate rack and stunning coral chandelier. While brighter and livelier than the main house, everything was done to keep it in the style of the original cottage. The end result is a charming, authentic home that invites visitors on a journey to a simpler time.

Blue Bayou This spacious Naples home, built by London Bay Homes, with furnishings designed by Bay Design Store, is a study in darks and lights. The color blue takes center stage in this design, as the various hues of aqua, teal, and powder blue are offset by the rich dark browns of a decidedly British West Indies flavor. The high lacquer ebony floors are the foundation for the cool, crisp formality of the furniture selections. The sprawling single-story floor plan is warm and inviting while still remaining elegant. London Bay Senior Project Manager Kevin Waldron, worked closely with the client to ensure the proper respect was paid to integrating the view of the outdoor elements into the interior living spaces. Waldron and the London Bay design team expertly coordinated the placement of the windows and expansive sliding doors, so that resort-like outdoor features, such as the waterfall, raised spa, vinecovered trellis, and multiple seating areas, could be seen from any vantage point in the home. “This was a dream client. Sue Hagemann personally led many of the material selections. This is one of the most beautiful projects I have ever worked on,” describes Waldron.

The home’s impressive exterior offers a sophisticated blend of both West Indies and Bermuda style architecture.

In the formal living room, a striking cocktail table with hand-hammered bronze “Wok” base takes center stage. Dressy pops of white and blue in alternating upholstered wing-back chairs combined with whimsical fabrics and embroidered linen create an area brimming with tailored sophistication. Jim Kunstel, Design Director for Bay Design Store along with design associate Kirsten Workinger, was integral in the design process. “The style is transitional--upbeat traditional with a current vibe,” says Kunstel. An elegant aqua sofa sits upon an impressive wool and silk custom rug that displays an interesting, iridescent leaf pattern. Crisp and clean, the room’s large-scale sconces make a statement without the addition of table lamps. The overhead West Indies fan in the family room compliments the home’s exterior architecture and continues the Caribbean feel. Wood frame chairs with loose, leaf-patterned cushions maintain the presence of the home’s signature sea-salt blue, but the room’s most treasured element is a beloved cocktail table that the homeowners brought from their previous home. “This was a special piece,” says Kunstel. To accentuate its presence, a custom built-in entertainment center was created in the same rustic, textured dark wood, adding impact to the space.

The kitchen reflects the home’s transitional style by offering a softer, cleaner version of a more traditional kitchen. “We designed the space around the client’s needs, ensuring functionality and flow,” says Kevin Reid, Owner, Soho Kitchens. The island was done as a standalone furniture piece in a complementary paint and glaze which features custom cabinetry details to suit the homeowner’s specific needs. The cream painted Bremtown cabinetry is finished with a soft, light brown glaze that presents pleasing color variations depending upon the distance and angle from which they’re viewed. On the main focal wall, the curved, wooden hood was crafted using custom corbels and applied molding — becoming a work of art in its own right. “It’s a completely unique piece,” adds Soho Kitchen’s Senior Designer Brad Simmons. A mosaic tile ‘rug’ inset into the existing wood flooring distinguishes the area while offering practicality and durability. State-of-the-art Wolf and Sub-zero appliances inspire the gourmet lifestyle.

A tailored dining room was designed to place emphasis upon one of the home’s dramatic outdoor water features. To achieve this, the windows were deliberately left undressed to create an unobstructed view of a rock waterfall. The room is equipped with a Hickory Chair dining table with woven multicolored seats. Builtin cabinetry was created to appear as a free-standing piece of furniture. The room’s delicate design serves to further accentuate the beauty of the home’s dark stained, hand-scraped walnut flooring. Almost monochromatic, the main guest suite seems intent upon engaging its occupants with thoughts of the sea. “We decided to go with a transitional upholstered bed in a dark finish in order to keep the room casual yet sophisticated,” describes Bay Design associate, Kirsten Workinger. The use of cream linen draperies with blue banding and a small-scale upholstered chair add an air of tranquility.

The youthful second bedroom deviates somewhat from the overall color scheme of the house. Fresh and flirty, the white furniture offers a relaxed feel. Three, playful, convex mirrors above the bed are adorned with a silver-leaf starburst pattern. Stacked ball Venetian glass lamps add a pop of turquoise and an element of fun. The dark wood desk in the study is nicely balanced by the heavily textured linen draperies and reinforces the home’s casual island appeal. Faux coral lamps, an original landscape oil painting, and a sea-salt blue suede bench bring the water indoors. The room is completed by a striking hand-knotted, flat-weave rug done in soft blues and creams. Stately and serene, the master bedroom offers a relaxing oasis from the cares of the world. The bed is adorned by elegant silk accent pillows with a gold coral print. Barbara Barry furniture, a Murano Glass chandelier, and a spacious seating area allow the owners to feel pampered and restored.

Contemporary Coastal Designed with a deep appreciation for fine art, local culture and natural elements, this 2,545 square-foot condo built by A. Vernon Allen Builder and re-designed by Herscoe Hajjar Architects, is one of four units that make up the “Rooftops on Fourth.” This home is a prime example of a great escape in a perfect location. “With convenience, accessibility, and luxury all wrapped up into one fabulous package, it’s like no other property in Naples,” says Ryan Benson, Partner at A. This unit boasts a two-car garage with drive-through passage, expansive veranda, private rooftop terrace with outdoor kitchen, and yes, a private elevator. Once inside, the ease of coastal living takes over, and the transformation from harried to unhurried reigns. With single-story living and private roof terraces for each residence, this condominium design is beyond comparison. “It is a contemporary interpretation of coastal living,” says Jett Segal, Interior Designer and Owner of Jett & Company Inc. Interior Design. “The design concept was birthed after my client expressed an interest in moving away from the style of one of their homes we built together that was appointed in old world Mediterranean elegance. This new home is intentionally designed to be classically modern with high style furnishings,” describes Segal. The designer adds, “Harmonizing the textures of oversized vein cut travertine, large open grained wood, rough cut mother-of-pearl, exotic granites and plush natural woven fabrics blended perfectly with the reflective materials of polished chrome and glass found throughout the home. The affect — luxury lifestyle of barefoot elegance embracing all that Naples has to offer, mesmerizing beaches, sunsets, gulf waters and the arts.” The front foyer features a compelling encaustics creation by awardwinning artist Robin Luciano Beaty. Paired with a silver-finished driftwood sculpture displayed on a high gloss rosewood-veneered bow-front chest, all of these pieces serve as inspiration for the rest of the home’s organic elements, natural color palette, and the collection of nature-inspired fine art. To the right of the entryway, one is greeted by an engaging open living and dining room area. The design is invigorating with silk drapery, accented in an aqua medallion pattern showcasing the room’s 10-foothigh ceilings while providing a wonderful framework for the lovely

French doors leading out to a covered veranda. Comfortable upholstery, streamline designed cocktail table, and side tables offer the perfect spot for relaxing while two custom-sized wool area rugs define each space and add depth and texture. “These rugs are made out of New Zealand wool and Luxcelle which looks like silk,” describes Chris Smith of Designers’ Rug Center, Inc. “The wool is dyed and then blended to give a striated effect closely mimicking a hand-knotted Tibetan weave,” describes Smith. Additional artwork, many of which are sourced from Trudy Labell Fine Art, contributes to the underlying theme of bringing the outdoors in. Open tray ceilings with up-lights and metallic wallpapered lids, create a subtle but distinctive sophistication that is especially effective at night, and serves to enhance the extensive art collection. The kitchen is modern and streamlined with mahogany hardwoods and cabinets accentuating the height of the room while also providing ample storage. Exotic Taj Mahal granite countertops, contemporary light fixtures, and a stainless steel border around the bottom perimeter of the room, create a sleek space with great flow. The living, study, and kitchen area are connected to the rest of the home by an impressive 22-foot-long hallway that serves as a gallery for original artwork and notable art objects. Lighting is key in highlighting architectural features while also representing the artwork with finesse. The floor is a work of art in its own right with a vein-cut travertine inset that brings to life the grain and texture of natural, outdoor elements. seaside estate Where the herringbone pavers of Kaula Lane end in the sugary white sand of Barefoot Beach, a slender Gulffront home reaches four stories high into the brilliant Florida sky. Designed to be intimate and casual, the home was “organized to give you light and air,” says architect Jon Kukk.

“We have even hidden the mechanics of living, such as air conditioning vents, with architectural features like the custom tray ceiling, to enhance the calm, serene atmosphere. We created a lot of communal space on the main living floor, with the family room, kitchen and dining area flowing together. The 90 degree pocket doors actually give you a 270 degree view of the beach and the garden so the living space flows outdoors,” explains Kukk, principal at Kukk Architecture & Design. Extensive use of windows and their careful placement ensure that the main rooms always have light and air from more than one wall. “There is sun in every part of this home every part of the day, but with different deliveries. Light has movement and the house changes as the light moves through it. Colors and textures perform in light,” describes Kukk.

Freestyle Interiors lead designer Ruta Menaghlazi created interiors with a fresh, relaxed look. “We used a soft, quiet palette of neutral colors and arranged the rooms so as not to distract from the uninterrupted view of the water.” Says Menaghlazi. In the family room, a television lift cabinet is disguised as a bookcase flanked by custom-built bench seating. Retractable roll-down screens, hidden hurricane shutters, and motorized sliding pocketed doors keep the elements at bay when necessary and all but disappear otherwise. “I’d say this is one of Ruta’s greatest successes. I tried to give them no walls, and they still found one to decorate,” chuckles Kukk. The white oak wood flooring and the distressed finishes of the furniture emphasize comfort and livability. Natural woven baskets, nubby textures, and subtle beach-themed accessories can be found throughout the home. In the family room, paprika throw pillows provide a punch of color, as does the deeper-toned indigo in the custom area rug from Abbey Carpet & Floor, which anchors the seating area.

In the kitchen, clean-lined maple kitchen cabinets surround top of the line Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances. Taj Mahal quartzite countertops reflect the light from textured, seeded glass pendant lamps suspended from rope wires. The focal point of the kitchen is the polished marble mosaic range backsplash, which highlights the custom work of Tile Market & Design. “The micro mosaic pattern had five colors, plus a hint of pink which wasn’t a part of the vision. To remove the pink, we culled through the tiles, hand-selecting them to match,” explains company owner Darrin Boylan. The adjacent dining room features a hammered zinc-topped table tucked under a unique oyster shell chandelier. Casual, comfortable, lived-in furnishings are on the menu in this windowed nook offering expansive views of sea and sky. Each of the five sleeping suites opens onto a Gulf-front lanai, with its soothing sounds and mesmerizing view. Enveloped in the soft colors, Menaghlazi added tactile interest with tongue-and-groove headboard walls, matchstick blinds and linen-like fabrics. Ceiling details draw the eye upward in the two master suites, where massive 82” Casablanca-style fans gently rotate.

The vintage print linen drapes in this bedroom feature birds, a favorite of the owner. Wall-towall sisal carpeting and a woven basket bench add texture.

Three-dimensional ceramic fish were crafted by a local artist. The freestanding desk is reclaimed wood. The carpet provided by Abbey Carpet & Floor is a modern and whimsical pattern, featuring rich but muted colors and inspired by the hand-made fish art.

Peruvian travertine laid in a herringbone pattern carries the home’s neutral muted tones into the six bathrooms. Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery took its cue from the simple, clean design lines of the home when outfitting the kitchen and baths. Building on the narrow lot presented exhilarating challenges for Potter Homes Inc. “Anytime you are going vertical, there are issues — like hiding the mechanical systems,” describes Tom Potter. “We had to remain sensitive to light and sound transmission. And capturing the view was essential. But it was great fun to be able to build a special house like this.” The staircase that winds its way through each floor opens to the “Cloud Room.” No other room in the house captures the view quite like the “Cloud Room.” With windows on all sides, the fourth-floor suite with a wet bar and bath offers 360 degree views. “I have never seen ‘Cloud Room’ written on a floor plan,” says architect Kukk, “but that’s what it is. When you are up there, you are in the sky; you are so far up that you have left reality behind you, but you can still hear the water below.” It is the one room where the neutral palette of colors yields to the sunny yellows and soft grays of the sky into which it soars.

Casual Sophistication Step off the private elevator at this Moraya Bay luxury residence, and you’re greeted with a beguiling “round” foyer with a coffered ceiling, a polished silver fixture reminiscent of the Atomic age, and a custom designed bench with playful tassel

fringe.

For

designer

Wendy

Berry

of

W Design, this is the crowning jewel of a home filled with unexpected flourishes. “Our client wanted the feeling of a rotunda, and the original space was square. I’m very proud of the result,” she says. The entryway has an immediate impact, with its gallery shelves displaying a selection of natural coral, and oiled oak plank flooring contrasted with a combination Calcutta and crema marfil mosaic marble. Throughout this four bedroom, three-anda-half bedroom condo, Berry and the homeowners sought a casual, yet sophisticated dynamic that walked the transitional line while maintaining a distinct, almost flirtatious personality.

The illusion of a rotunda makes a captivating entrance from the private elevator. HomeAndDesign.net

That’s evident in the distressed oak floor that runs across the living spaces—warm and weathered, yet elegant in its geometry. The gallery serves as an open office area and pairs an aged oak desk and shelving unit with a dusky gray and white chevron upholstered wing chair. Overhead white beams are a crisp counterpoint to the walnut tongue-and-groove ceiling. In the living room, that ceiling gives way to a coffered white grid and matching white built-in units, a formal pinning for the laid-back sitting area that extends to a balcony overlooking the Gulf. An accent wall of stacked pebbles, coral printed pillows and linen fabrics are organic touches that connect indoor and outdoor, sea and land. For Berry, who’s worked widely in the building, the challenge was in keeping the look fresh and wholly original. At that, she succeeds, says Inga Wilson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the beach tower complex. “Moraya Bay has earned a reputation in Naples as having trendsetting models and interiors. Wendy designed the formal model, and we didn’t think she could improve on perfection. But that is exactly what she did—she truly outdid herself with this home.”

With comfort a priority, the family room offers another area for gathering around an entertainment console with a cleverly concealed television. Berry chose an oversized buff color sofa and blue-green trellis-patterned rug to mimic the colors of the sea outside of the glass doors. At the same time, the attached kitchen’s white cabinetry, polished nickel accents and thick Calcutta gold marble waterfalledged slab countertops and peninsula are a solid anchor for all the ocean-breezy openness. There’s detail here for the discerning eye too: A backsplash of tile with a glass quatrefoil pattern plays on the silvery threading in glass and marble.

The dining area, divided architecturally by design from the hall with an open shelving unit, makes use of trompe l’oeil. Walnut framed mirror panels approximate the effect of French doors, expanding the visual sweep of the room. “The mirror was a way for us to open up the space, and adding the millwork leant it an effect like a folding screen or a passage to another room,” says Chris Hylemon of Hyland Custom Cabinetry, a Thomas Riley Company. The Swedish country-style table and chairs finished in an oyster hue and a polished nickel chandelier lend the room formality but not stiffness.

The two front-facing guest bedrooms have been dressed in light, playful pops of color. In one bedroom, two full-sized beds wrapped in complementary teal and cream stripe are crowned by twin classic yet modern style chrome and leather stools. In the second bedroom, sage green wall paneling and a painted end table have the cheerful ease of a Nantucket cottage, while dove gray, open-eyelet drapes and a metallic dresser are refreshingly contemporary. Here, as elsewhere, the natural glow through generous-sized windows is amplified by soft, well-considered lighting.

Luxury abounds in the master suite, where Hyland did quite a bit of custom woodwork. Pocket doors with harmon hinges, made from solid walnut with a frosted glass insert open into a concealed panel in the door jamb and fold back into their pockets at a right angle to the closed position. The palate of blue, cream and gray created by Berry is designed to soothe—that is, if the private lanai with chaise lounges doesn’t do the trick. In the bathroom, Hyland built a vanity with a high-gloss white finish and custom shelving for the surrounding master closets. More stacked stone provides the backing for cantilevered shelving and the border between the expansive shower and the tiled flooring. Inside the glass-walled shower, a custom bench made of finished reclaimed marine-grade finished wood is a place for repose. “From the shower or Jacuzzi tub, you can look out through a huge window and view the Gulf,” Berry says. And there’s nothing illusory about that.

Gulf Grandeur With 110 feet of beach front property, captivating views of the Gulf of Mexico, and limitless opportunities to connect with nature, this lifestyle is unsurpassed. An impressionistic seascape by Christos Koutsouras serves as enticement to the stunning panoramas that span the entire back wall. “With an ocean front view like this, I try to simply and quietly work with it as the true focal point of the interior,” adds Mary Ann Williams, interior designer and owner of Landmark Design of Sanibel. Custom-made double-front mahogany doors with etched glass inserts in the shape of palm trees make for a distinctive entry. The foyer is spectacular featuring a coffered cathedral ceiling and impressive three story staircase that functions as the architectural centerpiece of the home. “It was a combined effort that included the architect, designer, owner and myself, resulting in a traditional staircase with personal elements that make a statement,” says Tim Pharr, co-owner, Trimcraft of Fort Myers, Inc. “It’s stylized Old Florida-Key West without all the Victorian embellishment,” says Ray Fenton, owner, Fenton Associates Architects, Inc. “The roof is a metal shingle that’s quite special with a wonderful texture.”

Situated on just over an acre, this 4,338-square foot two-story beachfront retreat makes a striking first impression with tropical landscaping and Dominican coral stone covering the driveway, walkway, steps and builtin planters. The home includes a stunning foyer, living and dining room with fireplace, gourmet kitchen, barbecue deck, expansive first and second floor lanai, two master suites, den, office, four bathrooms, elevator, three wet bars, loft , media room, swimming pool, spa, and three-car garage. Chestnut-stained maple hardwoods lead into the living room and dining room where an expansive covered lanai extends the living space. The division of the two rooms, created by a free-standing dual-facing gas fireplace and pair of square columns, adds a custom touch that is satisfyingly original. “We wanted the rooms to be separate, but still maintain a feeling of one open space,” says Williams.

Left — The division of the space with a dual-facing fireplace and pair of columns is inventive and exciting while simultaneously maintaining a sense of intimacy and open-ness. The living room features a pair of Henredon sofas in a Barbara Barry parchmentcolored mini boucle fabric, cotton/linen ivory drapes by Coraggio, and an anigre and macassar ebony coffee and end table by Michael Berman, making it a room full of texture, movement and reflection, much like its outdoor surroundings. Below — The foyer is masterfully executed showcasing a truly remarkable maple and poplar staircase that took four technicians from Trimcraft of Fort Myers, Inc. four weeks to construct onsite, and serves as an important sculptural element in keeping with the home’s design aesthetic. Previous Page — With immediate access to covered lanai, the dining room glows in a palette of white linen with taupe, brown and earth-tone accents. A high gloss tongue and groove ceiling, leather-back host and hostess chair, and one of a kind pieces, including a handcrafted glass, copper and metal-leaf sculpture by world-renowned artist George Bucquet displayed on the console, make this an entertainer and artist-lover’s dream.

Eight chairs in metallic washed cotton are paired with a large ebony-finished dining table making it a perfect setting for entertaining. An oversized Venezuelan black-horn framed mirror, oil painting by artist Ken Otsuka, and chrome and glass chandelier all contribute to the room’s sleek lines. “We chose sophisticated furnishings, colors and textures that are somewhat dressed down in certain areas to achieve the casual elegance that the client was after,” added Williams. An extraordinary hand-knotted Peshawar wool rug in pale earth tones transforms the floor into its own masterpiece. “These rugs are one of a kind, woven, using hand-spun wool from sheep that graze in the high Ghazni mountains in Afghanistan,” describes Chris Smith of Designers’ Rug Center of Naples. “Because of the altitude, the wool is extremely rich in lanolin oil which gives these rugs their high sheen and luster.” The gourmet kitchen is elegantly styled with efficiency in mind. Custom made cream-colored birch wood cabinets, a chestnut-finished cherry wood island, Golden Beach and Absolute Black granite countertops, and a backsplash showcasing hand-painted subway tiles creates an atmosphere that is both comfortably functional and exquisitely attired.

The mixing of light cabinetry and granite on the countertops with the darker wood and granite on the center island, creates a wonderful interplay of color and interest. A breakfast bar that accommodates six, separate wet bar, walk-in pantry and barbeque deck all serve as off-shoots to this glorious open-concept kitchen.

The den is located off the living room and also serves as a guest bedroom equipped with a sleeper sofa that has a Tempur-Pedic mattress for luxurious comfort. The window treatments are a combination of Conrad woven shades and woven jute drapes that diffuse the light while adding a casual but effective textural element.

The den, which also serves as a guest bedroom, is the perfect place for settling in with a good book. A Henredon Maitland Smith sailboat art piece, hemp rug woven in Nepal, and buttery soft leather sleeper sofa work together to create a room that is warm, welcoming and full of character. The first floor master suite is open, airy and private. A pair of handsome Henredon bedside chests adds an elegant touch while a four-poster Venetian bed in ebony with a silver leaf finish dazzles in a metallic washed cotton. A luxurious dressing stool with delicate beaded trim, covered in the same material, completes the look. “Custom touches are so important,” says Angela Lossia of Angela Fine Furnishings, who supplied the stool and other items. The ensuite illuminates with walls wrapped in a Maya Romanoff mother-of-pearl mica-shell covering, floors in French limestone, and a solid onyx vessel sink sitting atop a floating rough hewn walnut counter. Altogether, it produces an amazing effect while providing an excellent example of dynamic design.

Heading up to the second floor master suite, one is awed by breath-taking views and beautiful embellishments. An upholstered bed in gray suede, leather ottoman, charming pair of Henredon chairs, and Barbara Barry table with a black granite top set the tone for refined sophistication. The area rug, constructed out of strips of dyed cowhides, adds a hint of Hollywood glamour. The accompanying ensuite continues in the same vein with walls, countertops and flooring in a gorgeous Calacatta Gold marble, and wheat-colored custom-made cabinetry aged with rubbed black accents. The double shower includes epic views and fixtures fit for a king. “We used Kohler water tiles including a water tile rain head from the ceiling for a unique showering experience,” adds Sara Clark of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery.

Left — Several selections from Henredon featured in the first floor master suite help create a relaxed, streamlined ambiance including the petite soft-curved sofa, comfy chair with matching ottoman, and lustrous penshell mirror. A painting done in oil and silver leaf titled, “Beneath the Palm,” by artist Court Romano, offers additional metallic accents and a feeling of rejuvenation. Below — Dornbracht fixtures, Conrad natural woven shades, a solid onyx vessel sink, French limestone flooring, and mother of pearl mica shell wall covering makes for a master bath that is one of a kind in design and craftsmanship.

The backyard features a lagoon-style pool/spa surrounded by exquisite Dominican Coral stone decking. The furnishings, in an all-weather teak, have been allowed to patina naturally for a look that is in keeping with the surf located just footsteps away. The Gables It takes a keen eye and an innovative spirit to incorporate seemingly opposing elements and create a cohesive collaboration that works. Twelve 6th Street South—one of seven homes that make up an enchanting enclave called The Gables—delivers in achieving that ideal. By mixing the old world charm of classic row house living with a modern upscale approach, one is given a lifestyle that offers the best of both worlds. Row homes, also referred to as terrace homes, became popularized in Paris, France and date back to the 16th century. Today, they have become a popular American style with many transcending into examples of fashionable luxury living at its best. While this home is not as traditional as San Francisco’s iconic “Painted Ladies,” it is a fully detached, single-family residence that offers the same undeniable appeal. With a sophisticated application, this residence features

everything from tankless water heaters to a highly efficient air conditioning system… it’s beautifully appointed, in an excellent location, and provides exceptional value,” adds Smith. Exquisite French White Oak wide-plank hardwoods, masterfully handcrafted by Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring, are featured throughout the main living areas of the home, and set the tone for spacious, contemporary living. “Fabricated by hand in our family-owned factory in Europe, we use only the finest sustainable hardwoods and materials,” says Arturo Guido, co-owner of Legno Bastone. “The finish was inspired by interior designer Kelly GodseySmith of Kelly Godsey Design, Inc. Her specifications regarding grain and tone were created to enhance the overall vision of the design and décor. It has been so well-received, we are now fabricating an entire “Kelly” collection.”

Godsey-Smith describes her influence and design aesthetic as coastal modern on this project. “The emphasis was on clean lines with lots of warmth and character,” describes Godsey-Smith. “I brought in a lot of organic elements and natural materials.” The open concept gourmet kitchen is pristinely executed with an emphasis on glossy finishes and sleek design details. Polished chrome pendulum light fixtures, lustrous natural quartz countertops, and a frosted and pearlescent glass tile backsplash add a touch of shimmer to the clean lines. The top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances, bright white cabinetry, and unique tray ceiling create a space that is both streamlined and functional. Three modern bar chairs constructed of bent natural walnut add warmth, flair, and visual interest. The kitchen flows seamlessly into the dining and great room area where 11-foothigh ceilings and an abundance of natural light create the perfect spot for entertaining. Paneless windows of varying size offer exceptional exterior views and direct access to the covered lanai. An original abstract painting by artist S. Litvak and an oversize seagull painting add a chic, upscale dynamic, while comfortable couches in a soft, oatmeal linen create a relaxed atmosphere. Several furniture pieces stand out including the chunky hand-painted coffee table, mustard-colored leather wingback chair, driftwood entertainment console with marble top and sliding lattice doors, and shitake-finished dining table. While all are very different, they each contribute to the overall assimilation of the space by adding sculptural angles, fabulous structure, and an underlying exuberance. Three bedrooms complete with ensuites and walk-in closets span the entire second floor. Spacious and uncluttered, all of the elements featured have been chosen with comfort and style in mind. From the linen upholstered headboard and mirrored dresser in the master bedroom suite, to the cowhide rug and tufted lounge chair and ottoman featured in the guest bedroom, each piece influences the energy of the space by generating a vibe that is both unassuming and daring all at once. All of the bathrooms are designed with an understated elegance in mind. The master bath, in particular, is perfectly attired. With its pale bluish-gray walls, Calacatta white marble countertops and flooring, soaking tub, and top-of-the-line fixtures, spa-like amenities are a given in this luxurious home. And while the interior of this home is certainly exceptional, it is the outdoor living area that is truly the crowning jewel of the project. If you are looking for a “wow” factor, just step outside. A cascading waterfall, spa, grilling area, and expansive fullyexposed outdoor terrace complete the look. Oversized contemporary furniture in a dark, charcoal wicker creates drama while a handcrafted, espresso-stained, coffered cypress ceiling adds richness and depth.
