As the Bermuda-style home is viewed from the new custom-poured shell driveway one would never guess at the extensive redesign and artfully executed renovation which took place. The orientation of the home was changed from the narrow side street to face Gulf Shore Boulevard, a second two-story wing was added on the right, and the triple-arches were changed to reveal a new grand entryway. “It took a lot of structural re-engineering, but I’m glad we were able to add the arches because they look spectacular as you approach the house,” notes builder Jay Bowerman.

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

A

As you approach this elegant Bermuda-style home, you would never guess that it was once hidden behind a jungle of trees and subtropical shrubbery, obscuring its potential to be a modern family home in one of Naples’ best locations. Looking at it today, it’s also impossible to tell that it has undergone four renovations in its past life because this, the fifth and last renovation, was done with such vision, skill, and care. Home & Design® Magazine’s 2017 Signature Home has at last been transformed into the modern Old Naples estate it was meant to be. “I was always drawn to the home and I felt it was too important to be torn down,” says developer Kristen Williams of KW Properties. “Living in this area, I knew it was one of the first grand homes built on Gulf Shore Boulevard. I could tell it had great bones, we just needed to revive it, and create a home that fit the needs of the new Naples resident.” Williams enlisted the talents of architect Alberto Abad of New Architectura and builders Jay Bowerman and Jaider Gonzalez of Big Island Builders. The team set to work designing an additional wing and new entry worthy of the home. “We felt it was important to change the orientation of the entrance to create more curb appeal and to give the home a true Gulf Shore Boulevard address. Also, the original two-story wing made the home feel off balanced,” comments Abad. Armed with a plan for her vision, Williams was thrilled when she was approached by Home & Design with the idea of collaborating with celebrity designer Lillian August to turn the property into a one-of-a-kind show house. “I am such a fan of Lillian’s collections, so I jumped at the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with her,” says Williams. Bringing a design perspective driven by couture runways and a love of vibrant palettes, Lillian August was able to create a home that plays to fashion while still maintaining the traditional feel Northern transplants u

Left: “This home was about surprise elements for me—from the way a hallway would open into an intimate sitting room, to accent items found throughout, I wanted people to be excited about each new space—,” says celebrity designer Lillian August, seen here in a portrait taken in the formal living room by photographer Lorin Klaris. An expertly curated mix of traditional formality and a relaxed lifestyle is apparent. The sleek silhouette of twin Maison sofas pairs with the gold finish of the coffee and side tables offering an ́80s vibe. The art in this room is from August’s Wendover collection, inspired by her love of Florida’s always beautiful sky. The large antique mirror was retrofitted for the home and plays off the arched windows it reflects.

are so accustomed to. While inspired by the Floridian sky, August was also charmed by Williams, and her hands-on approach to the project. “I found working with Kristen to be magical, and collaborating with a woman developer was empowering. It gave me the ability to play to fashion and celebrate the power of style through the design of the home.” One of the main challenges Williams and August faced was the physical distance between them. While Williams and August were able to travel to one another at times, someone at the local level was needed to facilitate the vision. That task fell to Suzanne Costa of Suzanne Costa Interiors who says, “As a New York designer I was very familiar with Lillian August and working with such an icon was an honor. I feel we were able to take her distinct and colorful style and successfully translate it for Naples’ coastal market.” Throughout the home, August’s unique ability to layer color, retro styles, and whimsical elements creates an interior that speaks to the history of the home and its setting, while looking towards the bright future it’s sure to have. n

Above: Filled with saturated color and textural layers, the dining room is a space that gives the homeowners a truly formal entertaining area. American made chinoiserie wallpaper represents a new opportunity for designers as it replaces the more expensive and labor-intensive hand-painted method. The wallpaper sets the color scheme and period for the room, and is accented with the punch of Chinese red and oversized porcelains. The dark wood dining table sits on a rug that reinforces the traditional feel.

Left: The French country kitchen is consistently one of the favorite rooms in the home. Designed by Carol Ruffino and manufactured by Ruffino Cabinetry, the Alabaster White-finished cabinets provide the perfect canvas on which to build. Wire-grill door inserts with limed oak T&G backs, and shelves with custom iron brackets complement the beautiful limed oak island. Ruffino’s design incorporated a Lacanche Chassagne Classic Art Culinaire French range. Williams used the French pastry table at the end of the island to enhance the classic European look. Calcutta Gold marble and French white oak flooring complete the space. HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

Left: The pool area created a unique set of challenges for the builder and architect. Because the lot was fairly narrow and the orientation of the home had been changed, they had to be creative in working around their setback requirements. Abad’s solution was to cantilever the home, giving the exterior more visual interest while adhering to the city’s guidelines. The tiered Travertine pool was another clever solution, and creates a unique entertaining space. Large pink flamingos by Ed Koehler add a tropical pop of color to the neutral tones of the pool area.

VISIONARY design

CONTEMPORARY REDEFINED IN CAPE CORAL HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

Vision, invention, and extreme dedication built what is arguably one of the most innovative and unique contemporary homes on Florida’s West Coast. The realization required the perfect synergy of client, design professionals, and builder. “Much of what you see in this home is the product of vivid imagination,” explains K2 Design Group president and design principal Jenny Provost, “But imagining it and getting it into bricks and mortar on the job site—that is something that requires a truly dynamic team.” The client had been renting an existing home on the magnificent wide-water lot in Cape Coral. After searching for the perfect property to build his dream home, he decided instead to purchase the rental home and tear it down, allowing him to keep the view he loved. With roots in South Africa where modern, contemporary architecture is prevalent, he enlisted friend, builder, and fellow South Africa native Lionel Wilson of Modern Homes International to build his modern mirage. “I’ve built modern but never anything to this degree, so the creativity of what came through building this home was probably the biggest challenge I’ve ever had or ever will have. I’m referring to everything from the materials we used to the electrical, lighting, ceiling detail, and innovative design,” says Wilson. The framework for the floor plan was crafted through on-site meetings between the homeowner and residential designer Richard Guzman of R.G. Designs. “When I met the client he showed me where he wanted his sofa to be situated to take advantage of the water view. Our goal was to eliminate any support columns that would obstruct the view, and to capitalize on that view from nearly every room. Across the back of the house we designed and engineered a 50-foot expanse with an uninterrupted vista.” K2 Design Group’s Jenny Provost added her daring vision to Guzman’s framework, imagining and inventing the design with dramatic results. Much of what she and the client dreamed up had never been done. It required exceptional skill in execution, as well as a bit of good fortune. “When you are creating something for the first time, all that planning and putting it together can be for nothing if it doesn’t work,” Provost explains. According to Wilson, many of the subcontractors were also learning new techniques or creating methods to execute the visionary design. “This is what we love to do. At the end of the day, what resulted was uncompromising quality—nothing was sacrificed.” “I’m really proud of this project and the entire team that worked on it,” notes Provost. “This was a very complicated project with a client who pushed the limits. The client was the catalyst for making this as extreme as it became, and as exceptional as it turned out. It required us to work harder and think more cleverly.”

Right: The great room reveals the spectacular view through the pocketing 12-foot tall electronic sliding glass doors. The laminated walnut staircase envisioned by Provost and crafted in Wilson’s workshop, angles around the custom-built, glass, quartz, and stainless steel elevator. The fireplace surround is solid quartz with quarter-cut walnut panels and floating shelves. The ceiling detail, also conceived by Provost, ties the room together with the same walnut panels. A Minotti sofa complemented by Gyform chairs creates a comfortable seating area atop the Kravet area rug.

Left: The home office is equipped with a conference space, audio-visual capability, and a large balcony overlooking the water. The conference table and cabinetry were designed and crafted through K2, as was the wall cladding. Picking up the lighter element of the ceiling cladding, Provost used sand-colored leather Polflex boardroom chairs and a Desede desk chair. In this room and throughout the home, residential designer Guzman says much of the innovation is in what isn’t visible, “The lighting system capability, the way all of the mechanical equipment is hidden, the structural engineering—all of this adds to the overall uniqueness of design.”

A fire pit creates a warm ambiance for the poolside bar. On the covered upper level, Wilson added a new porch cooling system to the outdoor design. Twenty-two “eyeballs” installed in the ceiling spray a high velocity mist which cools the ambient temperature up to 18-degrees. The upper deck includes a dining table, conversation seating, and an outside bar that mimics the same tornado-shaped leg design as seen in the kitchen.

This British West Indies style home with Bahama shutters, wroughtiron balcony rails, cypress brackets, and terraces creates a strong tropical feel. “The client wanted a really timeless, classical look. Natural materials say a lot about the quality of construction and longevity. The cladding is a shell-stone, notes architect John Cooney.

Designed as both a showcase for a personal art collection and a comfortably elegant retreat, this waterfront home captures the classical elegance of the British West Indiesinspired style. A palm-lined motor court sets a grand tone, leading to the front door of this stately home, situated on a generous one-and-a-half-acre lot. Inside, the 8,314square-foot residence includes four bedrooms, five full baths, and multiple living areas. Views of the waterway can be captured from each room and from the multiple balconies on both the front and rear exterior. John Cooney, partner at Stofft Cooney Architects, artfully incorporated elements of an art gallery in his design, complete with dimensional space for sculpture, focal point niches, and ample wall space. Cooney coordinated with the designer and artists to showcase the owner’s existing collection along with additional works commissioned during the project. Interior designer Sherri DuPont of Collins & DuPont Design Group notes the important interplay between the art collection and property design in this two-story masterpiece, “The clients worked with their favorite artists to create distinct pieces to enhance specific areas,” remarks DuPont adding, “Every piece of art was inspirational for each setting.” To capture a sophisticated gallery-feel, the team used classic millwork throughout the home. Cooney explains, “The client was very interested in having a lot of detail. Every ceiling was intricately designed with custom mouldings and beams. The walls feature panels and extensive wainscoting. The builder really had to bring his A-game to the craftsmanship and creation of this moulding. Both quantity and quality of details were very important to this house.” Builder Mark Smith of Harwick Homes says of the finished product, “It’s a beautiful example of what can be done when you have a client who is interested in this level of detail in a home. It was a real joy to step back and see the client appreciate the finished trim and interior. That’s what we as a company have traditionally been known for. It’s the details which make the core of the home something special. From the wood flooring to the stone cladding on the exterior, the home is stunning,” adds Smith. “The client entrusted us with their dream for this home.”

Left: A creamy hue in the upholstery, walls, and millwork provides a neutral canvas for a bloom of colors in the art and accessories. The team’s efforts resulted in perfectlyfitted recessed niches for major pieces of art, such as the one chosen to hang above the fireplace in the living room. “Hands down, the Chagall is the focal point in this room. The fireplace was designed to showcase this piece,” says DuPont. Two matching Henry Royer cocktail tables sit side-by-side on a custom hand-tufted wool/silk Axis area rug from Tai Ping, bringing a modern Asian aesthetic. A pair of J. Robert Scott L’Envol slipper chairs and two matching upholstered wood frame chairs face the cocktail tables, flanked by Swaim custom tapered consoles.

Natural Super White quartzite creates the range backsplash and enhances the bespoke cabinetry. The wood accents in the kitchen blend seamlessly with the Legno Bastone Noce European Black Oak flooring installed by Naples Flooring throughout the main living areas. A Wolf 48-inch Pro-Style gas 6-burner range with griddle provides ample cook space, and is paired with a Wolf double oven and convection steam oven. An Asko under-counter beverage center makes entertaining a breeze. All appliances are from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery.

Above: “The red accent table and abstract pillow fabrics add synergy to an otherwise monochromatic, relaxing room,” explains DuPont of the seating area adjacent to the kitchen. The paintings pay homage to abstract artist Jackson Pollock and represent the focal point of the family room. DuPont added “gallery” seating to establish an area conducive to reading and television viewing. Navy and silver lumbar pillows and the silver abstract square pillows cool the room. A Bernhardt Imperial cocktail table with a polished stainless steel finish complements the custom Stark hand-tufted nylon area rug in fresh light grays, icy blues, and crisp whites.

Right: The elegant master bath enjoys a private view as DuPont explains, “The tub is framed by the window with the garden as a backdrop. All other elements radiate around the tub, which is carved from the same single piece of stone as the flooring to guarantee grain and color match.” The floor is a 24-by-24-inch Calacatta Caldia honed marble, and pairs richly with the Calacatta marble vanities. We chose scarlet as our ‘pop’ color, as we hadn’t seen anything in red in a while,” says Mark Vanagas, senior designer. Shafran also notes that so many homes are going white for mass appeal. To mix things up, this unique Naples model home features both white and dark wood walls throughout. The result is a substantially neutral palette. “Our desire was to create a home with wide appeal using colors and textures we’ve used in the past with great success,” says Watt. “We did this with stunning results.” n

Above: Shafran says the entire kitchen was designed around its two wine rooms, one for reds and one for whites. The room features Tradewind Designs custom cabinets with shaker panel doors. “We wanted to stay simple in form in the kitchen,” Shafran explains. “It’s an easy background for all the furniture in the house.” The front island features a granite waterfall countertop with cabinets on either side, while the rear island serves as a cooking and work space. Cabinets on either side of the range hood feature windows for natural light. The refrigerator is Sub-Zero and the cooktop, oven, and dishwasher are all Miele from Monark Premium Appliances.

Right: The vaulted great room ceiling features dark, inverted, exposed, T-shaped trusses. “They visually anchor the space,” says Shafran of the design. “We didn’t want to put a particular time or style on the home.” Delicate Ralph Lauren ring chandeliers, made of nickel, with Edison-style bulbs, continue the elegant simplicity. As with all the rooms in the home, this one features straight lines and neutral base colors with scarlet accents. “If you don’t like scarlet, you could easily change out the accent pieces and artwork without changing all of the furniture,” Shafran adds. The Century sectional offers a softness and comfort. Lexington white leather and chrome chairs, and a Pacifica custom-designed sofa table complete the seating area. An all-wood, double-pedestal table, and upholstered chairs define the dining area. Pacifica also customdesigned the room’s floral centerpieces.

A Batterbury bench at the center of the room adds seating space or a convenient spot for bathtub beverages.

The mirror over the Hickory Chair four-poster bed provides a focal point and complements the Century wood and mirror nightstands. Custom white-on-white artwork with white silk, rose petals is positioned over each nightstand. The chandelier is by Robert Abbey. Shafran designed the desk with a wooden base and glass top for a more feminine aesthetic. “We know that in many homes, men have the library, but many women are running businesses from home now,” she notes. “It’s really a genderneutral space.” The rich Java Oak wide plank flooring is softened by Benjamin Moore Baby Fawn painted walls. A NEW TAKE ON A CUSTOM HOME

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

S

Set in an award-winning community of private homes, this single-story, custom-crafted residence strikes a delicate balance. It maintains a cohesive context of materials and design elements which tie it into the fabric of the existing neighborhood in the Estuary at Grey Oaks, but its floor plan is anything but predictable. John Cooney, partner at Stofft Cooney Architects describes the project as “outside-of-the-box,” pointing out elements of West Indies contemporary style with a hint of Asian minimalism. Cooney adds, “The home was deliberately designed to have a feeling of unfolding.” Encompassing 5,837 square feet, it is not only aesthetically exceptional, but also engineered to perform in a Floridian climate of intense sun, humidity, and rain. Builder Joe Smallwood of BCB Homes employs a unique combination of Anderson windows along with air systems to regulate heating/cooling, fresh air, humidity, and temperature, which combat common issues such as moisture problems, poor air quality, and huge electric bills in the year-round sub-tropical climate. Smallwood explains that the user-friendly combination of systems results in an efficient, comfortable, and healthy home. “You don’t see any of it, but it’s all of those things behind the walls, and in the attic which make our homes exceptional to live in,” says Smallwood. In keeping with the owner’s wishes for a contemporary but warm and livable home, interior designer Lisa Ficarra, principal of Ficarra Design Associates, uses multiple textures throughout the residence, explaining, “A mix of woods, chromes, acrylic, and fabric textures creates a more unique style, which is interesting to the eye.” The color palette reinforces this tone, employing variations of neutral grays, taupes, whites and cool blues.

Left: Royal palms accentuate the home’s facade with its multi-hipped roof, creating a tropical courtyard feel. The courtyard design floods rooms with light from the multi-windowed walls. Stone cladding and cypress bracket details enhance the island feel. Entering the courtyard through the pavilion and gate, one has a line of sight into the great room and through to the outdoor living area.

166

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

Ficarra designed dark ceiling beams as the focal point of this space. “The beam design for the living room literally appears to float, suspended from the ceiling, Ficarra says. The floating ceiling beams act as the apex for a visually pleasing triangulation of elements, spanning the space. On one side of the room, a customized Verga glass rod chandelier with dark acid blackened iron accents hangs over the Hickory Chair Atelier dining table. A Ficarra-designed custom media unit with floating shelves anchors the far wall, providing the third element of contrast. The effect is both distinctive and cohesive. Century dining chairs are upholstered in a woven asymmetrical grid design, which features a zinc-silver rail handle, and light coconut wood finish. Cream tones continue in the sitting area upholstery, framing the Swaim high-gloss, grayfinish cocktail table with polished metal accents.

The inlaid limestone shower design provides geometrical interest and color, capturing all the neutrals throughout the home within the shades of limestone.

Right: Ficarra created the triple-step coffered master bedroom ceiling, along with the other dramatic ceilings throughout the house. A set of Barbara Barry Grace lounge chairs in the master bedroom affords early risers a view of the golf course through the full-length glass doors and windows. The doors open directly into the outdoor living area. All windows in the home provide privacy, optimize light, and save energy with Lutron automated shades. Ann Gish bedding paired with cutout chenille velvet throw pillows and a trisected custom padded headboard upholstered in textured oatmeal linen bring a cohesive color scheme and softness to the room. The relaxed flow and subtle textures continue in the marble lamps and silk sheer draperies, accented with a horizontal inlay pattern.

Cultured stacked stone accents lend a contemporary element, while corbels and shutters nod to island style on the home’s façade. “This is a well-done, proportionate house that will not age,” says architect Alberto Abad. Savoy House lanterns in a walnut patina finish cast a welcoming glow through seeded glass. The side-loading garage allows for well-balanced symmetry; it does not overwhelm the elevation. The high level of finishes and quality of materials selected by the owners dramatically elevate this home.

“It’s all about family,” states Chuck Gile emphatically. “That’s the most important thing,” agrees his wife Georgia. That was the motivation behind the couple’s decision to build a large, family-oriented home when their Naples condominium proved to be too small to include their two sons and daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren all in one visit. They spent two years looking for the perfect location before falling in love with a homesite overlooking a lake and the golf course. They chose the lot before the subdivision was even released for sale. Architect Alberto Abad of New Architectura, Design West interior designers Brooke Meyer and Kelsey Talis, builder Steve Watt, and landscape architect Ed Westwood of GardenBleu Designs comprise the creative team that brought the Giles’ vision to life. “We began with the builder’s Cielo model and customized the design,” explains architect Abad. The result was four bedrooms plus a study and four full- and one half-baths and a cabana bath artfully arranged in 4,757 square feet of living area. “This is definitely a lifestyle home,” says Abad. “It’s a merger of several styles; it’s clean and bright and has the beginning of modernism.” Designers Meyer and Talis call the interiors transitional, with classic architectural elements of traditional design. “There’s a nod to coastal,” adds Talis. “The textiles and soft goods add character, leaning more toward contemporary.” The Design West team brought several trends to the forefront. Myer explains, “Mixing patterns, scale, and texture is popular nowadays. The European white oak flooring is a lovely example of cerused wood—a technique that brings out the grain. Faux is coming back, in certain aspects. Nail-head trim is in vogue.” The duo designed the built-in display walls flanking the fireplace in the great room. Of them Talis says, “This is a modern, trendy design, but it can be worked into their family life. The muted background palette allows for accents to pop, and they can be changed out seasonally.” She is quick to note the timeless features as well, “This is a durable house. Functional. Comfortable. The Giles are a key factor; they are constantly entertaining, so the textiles and finishes are intentionally not delicate. They were selected to withstand the owners’ routine.” Involved from the ground up, Meyer and Talis say that organization was the key to the success of the project. “It was a lengthy process with many people involved,” explains Meyer. “It was a blessing to have the people we dealt with be just as organized.” Talis expands the thought, “We wear so many different hats. Some days we’re project managers, some days we’re purchasing agents. Contrary to popular belief, we do more than just colors!”

In the great room, the focal wall features a gas fireplace with a precast surround set in white stacked stone. Carpentry clad boxes fashioned in wood tones match the finishes in the room. Woven grasscloth on the wall behind them gives depth to the open-backed, round-edged boxes. Lighting only the vertical boxes and floating the entire unit adds more dimension. A sectional from E.J. Victor in a neutral fabric, and a pair of leather and fabric slopedarm Vanguard club chairs all have a low profile so as not to interfere with the view of the backyard and beyond. Hickory White end tables are finished in platinum gray. The Vanguard tufted ottoman with metal base and wood inlay is centered atop a wool and silk patterned area rug by Kravet.

Opposite: Light pours into the kitchen from a trio of clerestory windows and a pair of backless, glass-fronted cabinets hung in front of exterior windows. A hidden pantry is accessed to the left of the Miele double ovens from Monark Premium Appliances. A quartet of Fine Art Lamps’ metal-framed pendants hangs from artisan square-link chains, spilling light from mica shades onto the dual islands topped with Cristallo quartzite. Swivel stools from Century in an aqua and white zebra print provide seating at the dining island. Wood-Mode custom maple cabinets in Vintage Nordic White line the walls. The range hood and island bases are Wood-Mode Heirloom Harbor Mist with Pewter Glaze, all from Tradewind Designs. The 3-by-12-inch stone backsplash brings in the colors of the cabinets and islands. A tile inset commands attention behind the Miele 5-burner gas cooktop also from Monark Premium Appliances.

Above: The underlit built-in buffet by Tradewind Designs continues the style of the kitchen cabinets. To easily serve family and company, the Octo dining table from Ambella features a central Lazy Susan. The table is crafted from brushed American white oak with a grey ceruse finish. Metal feet, finial and stretchers are made of brushed stainless steel. Eight tufted Vanguard dining chairs with nailhead trim are covered in a durable spa blue and ivory woven fabric. An iron and quartz chandelier from Fine Art Lamps shimmers with an aged silver-leaf finish. Fixed, embroidered sheer drapery panels with undulating aqua wood-bead trim cover the wall and frame the recessed sliders.

Below: The glassed-in wine room with stacked-stone walls features a Dacor by-the-glass wine dispenser and a custom backlit metal and wood wine rack to match the cabinetry in the adjacent kitchen. A series of arches leads the eye toward the vestibule of the master suite where a Bernhardt metal and stone console table sits beneath an oversized mirror framed with distressed silver leafing. The Fine Art Lamps ceiling fixture and the wall sconce pictured in the foyer both feature a silver leaf finish. Translucent mica shades diffuse the light.

Above: In the master bath, dark charcoal gray-stained cabinetry plays dramatically against the marble floor and wainscoting. Ronbow laboratory vessel sinks with Delta brushed nickel fixtures are centered in each of the vanities. A Jessica Charles textured gray vanity chair tucks into a kneehole. A Villeroy & Boch Labelle freestanding tub rests in front of the window. Atop privacy shades, a shaped-bottom fabric cornice defines the window.

Right: The master bedroom is a serene combination of blue and ivory. Sheer ivory window coverings are bordered with a contrasting charcoal sateen. Approximating the border’s height, the charcoal gray Hickory Chair nightstands and dresser, and gray chenille Hancock and Moore oversized chair-and-a-half, add a visual third dimension to the border effect. Suspended above each nightstand is a trio of pendant lamps from Fine Art’s Natural Inspirations collection. The fully upholstered Hickory Chair bed with nail-head trim is dressed with custom blue and ivory linens. At its foot is a Hickory Chair bench with a wooden base and a lightly patterned taupe and gray upholstered top.

Above: Guests in this suite are treated to a magnificent view as the sun sets beyond the golf course. Walls of windows are covered with ivory drapery sheers, banded on the edges in slate blue. Two sets of woven wood shades retract when not in use. One set filters light; the other provides complete privacy with blackout properties. The Vanguard bed features a tufted headboard upholstered in woven ivory fabric. A shimmering ivory duvet with a hint of taupe covers the bed. Pillows are in the same tone, accented by slate blue. Seeded glass table lamps with ivory linen shades from Curry sit on Vanguard nightstands, finished in deep gray. The custom chevron-patterned rug is from Kravet.

Opposite: The bunk room is the brainchild of Grandma Georgia. Four built-in TVs operated through headsets for ultimate viewing control are a favorite feature of the Gile grandchildren. Double bunks on the bottom and singles on the top mean this room can comfortably sleep six. Each bed features monogrammed pillows. Bailey, the family dog, waits patiently next to a Stanley dresser crafted in deep-toned cerused wood. The en suite bathroom beyond features a walk-in shower and personalized towel hooks for its young guests.

Left: The curve of the steps and the sun shelf are favorite features of Westwood, who designed the pool, terrace, spa, fire table and seating, water pots, swim-up bar, outdoor hardscape and landscape. Noting that this is easily the largest private pool in the community, Westwood says, “It was fun to create. The biggest challenge was to make sure all of these elements felt appropriate for the space, and not like a showroom of outdoor living accessories.” An outdoor kitchen, and dining and living areas are tucked under the lanai. Summer Classics’ cast aluminum chaises sit on the sun shelf.

An unusual Davanti mahogany entry door with alternating horizontal glass and wood panels provides a focal point for the clean, airy lightness of the entire exterior. The approach to the four-car side-entry garage deliberately breaks with the formality of the typical driveway. Location, location, location—the real estate mantra is brought to life in this home on Doctor’s Bay, an inlet of Venetian Bay in Naples’ Park Shore community. The waterfront residence is an eclectic blend of traditional and modern architecture and design, inviting easy, breezy indoor as well as outdoor living. Architect Falconer Jones describes the style as a “mix of tropical and contemporary, with a few signature design elements such as the unique exterior corner treatments.” Built by Knauf-Koenig Group, the home sits on one-third of an acre with ideal southwest exposure, and beautiful views which set it apart. “As with any KKG home, the uniqueness is evident throughout in the woodworking, custom finishes, and attention to detail. This home has all that and then adds an indoor/ outdoor lifestyle with amazing views of Venetian Bay,” explains Matt Knauf, CEO, Knauf-Koenig Group. The interior living space includes a great room, a kitchen and gathering room, five en suite bedrooms, an owner’s study, as well as a second-floor family/media room. Project owner/developers Sarah and Bill Chapin assembled the team, tasking Calusa Bay Design with creating the home’s inviting interior design. Calusa Bay Design principal, Leslie Sherman, says, “We were given a blank canvas, an opportunity to define the soul of this gorgeous home. The result is a sophisticated, inviting, coastal retreat that does a terrific job of framing the stunning long water views that are the centerpiece of the residence.” The trio of architect, builder, and design team has created numerous homes for the sophisticated Naples buyer. As Jones succinctly puts it, “Over the team’s evolving relationship on many projects, we have created a shorthand to describe our vision, merging the best ideas from each into this home.” “It was a true team effort,” adds Sarah Chapin. “The result is simply fabulous.”

Right: The great room features an oversized cocktail table with inlaid white onyx top and hand-forged steel enclosed base. Crushed velvet occasional chairs are positioned with twin 6-foot Chesterfields with nail-head trim in off-white textured linen. Silver-gray velvet cushions and coordinating throws complement the furnishings and the hand-knotted Persian rug. The original painting is by Anna Rac. The 25-by-30-foot living space is crowned with a beautiful painted wood box beam ceiling with tongue-and-groove insets. “The custom ceiling design and trim work throughout the home is a Knauf-Koenig Group signature feature,” says Nick Radick, Director of Marketing for KKG.

A round glass cocktail table with shagreen base sits atop a beautiful handknotted rug in a silver gray tone. The Legno Bastone European white oak flooring from Naples Flooring is carried through the room. A pair of contemporary style chairs complete the space.

Left: An original oil painting by Roy and Amanda Clark creates a brilliant, water-influenced focus for the dining room. “Our goal was to accentuate the incredible view and to draw one’s eyes toward the water by choosing a neutral color palette with accents in vivid ocean hues,” notes designer Tatum Johansson. A trio of pale green recycled glass chandeliers highlights a generously-sized custom dining table in a satin driftwood finish.

The generous kitchen island in a driftwoodinspired finish and ivory perimeter cabinetry is by Ruffino Custom Cabinets. Topped with Sea Pearl quartzite, the island is complemented with pendant chandeliers finished in polished nickel. Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances are from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery.

Sherwin Williams Modern White accents the walls, while Alabaster White moldings are reflected in the Bianco Dolomiti marble flooring. Ruffino Custom Cabinetry vanities blend into the surround, adorned with Emtek pulls in crystal and polished nickel. The Kohler Reve freestanding bathtub and Kohler Ladena sinks are fitted with sparkling same-brand faucets. The picture window framing the tropical green in the side yard is the only touch of color contrasting with the pure white of this tranquil space.

Right: The ocean-and-sea spray color palette in the master bedroom brings the bay view indoors. A handsome seascape, custom-framed in champagne gold- painted wood sits atop the channel-back headboard and base, in tufted off-white and gray fabric accented with nail-head trim. The tufted bench is upholstered in a nubby, tone-on-tone, warm white velvet. A cylindrical Capiz shell side table with an iridescent mother-of-pearl quality flanks the ivory side chair. The rug is hand-knotted Persian wool in aqua and taupe.

The infinity pool with waterfall is shaped and placed to optimize the long water view of the bay. A raised, heated, and illuminated spa and sun shelf complete this exceptional outdoor venue.

Left: The stained-cypress vaulted ceiling on the lanai contrasts with ivory 02brushed shell stone pavers. “Knauf-Koenig Group’s finishing work stands apart,” notes Debra Lysy, Design Director, Calusa Bay Design. “It provides a perfect accent for this beautiful, custom-furnished home.” A linen-colored, woven wicker sofa and pair of lounge chairs, cushioned in lighter Sunbrella fabric with hexagonal-patterned pillows, provide the perfect place to sit back and enjoy the view. Teak coffee and side tables repeat the warm tone of the stained cypress.

A PRIVATE RESORT-STYLE RETREAT

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

When John Cooney, partner at Stofft Cooney Architects, was approached to design a home in the Quail West community for Seagate Development, the first thing he noticed was the impressive width of the lot that abutted a nature preserve. “The challenge,” describes Cooney, “was to stretch out the house to take advantage of the lot’s width, while using the square footage well to ensure efficiency and functionality. I focused on mass and proportions.” The resulting Pine Valley model has elegant curb appeal and maintains the feel of the tropical West Indies style with hipped roofs and large overhangs, while updating the look with contemporary details like small punched windows. The floor plan was designed for the ultimate in functionality, but also to capitalize on the nature preserve and the privacy it confers. The great room’s retracting sliding glass doors open out to a proportionally equivalent outdoor courtyard that overlooks the infinity pool with the preserve beyond. Owners’ suite, clubroom, and media room branch out to the right of the great room. To the left, the kitchen, dining room, and two en suite guest bedrooms—each with its own outdoor spaces—lead to an oversized summer kitchen, an expansive outdoor dining area, and a one-bedroom casita. Multiple, distinctly-defined outdoor spaces, including a therapeutic spa and Zen garden, create a backyard resort overlooking the enchanting flora and fauna of the preserve. Ruta Menaghlazi, lead designer at Freestyle Interiors, was brought in early to advise on finishes and embellishments, as well as the comprehensive interior design featuring seamless indoor and outdoor spaces. Generously-sized rooms, and ultra-tall ceilings with floor-to-ceiling windows called for unique treatments to create intimacy with expansive space. Menaghlazi opted for a neutral palette and multiple textures rather than bright whites. “Contemporary spaces can so often be cold whites and grays,” describes Menaghlazi, “I like things a little timeless. Keep the clean lines, but bring warmth and a homey feeling through texture and character.” James Nulf, Chief Operating Office of builder Seagate Development, notes the home’s popularity with potential buyers, “Seagate was looking to build a comfortable home that would push the envelope on design and set the bar higher for Quail West. The Pine Valley is repeatedly referred to as the most comfortable, most livable, and most private home visitors have seen. We are very pleased.” Left: “The great room is the first thing you see when you enter the home and the last when you leave, so impression matters,” explains Interior designer Menaghlazi, “Plus there’s a clear view through the house.” A large-scale geometric lantern in a bronze finish from Currey & Co. draws the eye to the multi-tiered ceiling treatment. A Bernhardt creamy linen-covered sectional is anchored by a Restoration Hardware dark ebony wire-brushed coffee table atop a paprika and chocolate wool Ikat rug. A wirebrushed white oak floor in a light stain is installed on the diagonal for a dynamic look.

Sherman-Williams’ Perfect Greige complements the Champagne limestone floors bordered by white oak wood. The window covering is a Romo sheer cream linen. White linen skirted chairs are seated around the black dining room table. Two abstract prints from Trowbridge gallery in London draw guests to the dining room.

Right: The Zen garden just beyond the kitchen window sets the tone for the open, airy space. Floating shelves are mounted on a wall-climbing backsplash in dark chocolate glass subway tiles from Abby Carpet & Floor. White shaker-style cabinets with glass doors showcase favorite pieces and lighten the visual load of the room. The chef’s tools include a Thermador Freedom refrigeration integrated into the cabinetry, a multi-functional Thermador steam range with a six-burner cooktop, griddle, steam, and convection ovens, and a warming drawer—all from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Century wood bar stools, stained gray and upholstered in a textured blue, gray, and white tweed, invite casual dining at the oversized island topped in a white quartz with waterfall edges. Two large-scale bronze-framed lanterns with linen interior shades light the workspace.

COASTAL elegance

EXPRESS REDESIGN FOR A NAPLES CONDOMINIUM

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

257

I

Interior Designer Kira Krümm was faced with a challenge when hired by her Michigan-based clients. The couple purchased a condominium in Naples’ Tiburon community to be close to golf and friends, but needed the entire interior design redone in time to enjoy “season” in Southwest Florida. That deadline gave Krümm and company less than four months to work their magic. “No renovations were required but all of the home’s existing interior décor had to go and new furniture, fixtures, and accessories custom-ordered,” says Krümm, owner and principal designer of Koastal Design Group. “The clients agreed they wanted everything in their new home to be casual, but sophisticated. When it came to the type of design, the wife preferred a classic look, while the husband liked a contemporary style.” Krümm proposed a compromise, “I suggested a transitional look, which coincides perfectly with my design philosophy, combining a neutral background palette with a simplistic design approach. I prefer balanced interiors, inspired by our surroundings that are classic and timeless.” u

Previous Page: Clean lines evoke a sophisticated ambiance in the spacious dual-seating great room. The modern, low profile sectional sofa is upholstered in textured white Kravet Smart Fabric. All fabrics used are fiber-guarded,” explains Krümm, “to afford them durability and livability, not just beauty”. Twin sea-blue ottoman stools with chrome legs front a light gray, shagreen-topped coffee table. The convenient gray-wash wooden television console is from International Design Source. The end table hosts a polished- concrete lamp with a canvas shade. A chrome tripod standing lamp, and a nickel and crystal chandelier shining above the cocktail seating area are from Lighting First. A quartet of Kravet oversized armchairs with dark wood frames and neutral upholstery surround a coordinating whisper-gray, leather, swivel ottoman with a dark wood base, nickel accents, and a matching moveable center tray. Krümm’s soothing tropical palette reverberates in accent colors such as Horizon Aqua and Sunset Gold. A pair of silver, hand-tufted, wool and viscose area rugs supplies a feel of luxury while delineating space in the room. Krümm was able to salvage some of the existing drapes in the lounge and dining areas by adding a band of contrasting fabric, and changing hardware, saving both time and money.

Right: On the kitchen island, a buff and cream quartzite countertop, provides a perfect place to entertain friends while allowing the chef to join the conversation. Transitional-style swivel counter stools in a natural linen fabric and dove gray wood finish coordinate with the 24-inch square porcelain tile flooring. The dark java wood cabinetry was one of the existing design elements with which Krümm had to contend. She struck a balance between dark and light elements by making use of complementary dark wood in the frame of the Henredon dining table chairs, the nearby cocktail lounge chairs, as well as in other areas throughout the home. Krümm retained the Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige paint on the walls, which worked with her neutral approach to the backgrounds.

BEFORE

For a restful palette, Krümm selected the colors of Southwest Florida—the sand, sea, and sky. “We have finally moved away from the heaviness of the standard Mediterranean design that was so prevalent here in Naples, and into a less cluttered and more relaxed coastal elegance,” says Krümm. “Using soft blues, grays, and creams, we were able to create a serene sanctuary for the couple’s vacation home. Not only was the project done in time, but they love the redesign.” n

Left: Replacing the chaotic and overcrowded former design, Krümm took inspiration from the calming seascape photo that now serves as a focal point of the den and created a monochromatic palette. Krümm backed the artwork is a Phillip Jefferies natural woven raffia-patterned wall covering to add depth and a visual pop. The sand-hued sleeper sofa hosts throw pillows with a geometric print echoed in the metal appliqué of the drum chandelier above. The Vanguard stainless steel based ottoman coffee table removable inset tray is covered in Neptune Zinc cotton poly-acrylic. A bamboo silk-blend rug reflects the light from the sliding doors, creating a striated pattern. The window treatment consists of fixed sheer linen panels in steel blue, banded with a pearlized trim. Large mirrors in a silver painted frame flank the TV console and gather light from the balcony, where a set of weathered teak lounges offers another opportunity to enjoy the balmy breezes. A painted wood console from International Design Source features scallops that recall the gentle waves of the nearby Gulf of Mexico.

Opposite: The dining area features a Kravet 60-inch round glass-top dining table with polished-steel base and sleek Henredon chairs custom tailored in a cream and blue chevron patterned fabric and a dark wood finish. The chrome nail heads on the chairs coordinate with the table base. The chandelier overhead—the only fixture retained from the previous design—sports chrome accents with crystal arms, and an ivory shade. For the window treatments, Krümm replaced bronze hardware with brushed nickel, and banded the existing drapes in sea blue ombre trim to reflect the soft hue of the chair cushions. Above: Krümm created a harmonious haven, replacing the original loud chartreuse dresser, BEFORE

nightstands, and bedding with Henredon drawer chests in a soft Weathered Mineral stain. She added a tufted headboard and bed frame upholstered in a light natural cream cotton-linen blend. Brushed cotton bedding of the softest celadon green adds to the restful ambiance, while a tone-on-tone bamboo silk-blend rug provides sensual pleasure underfoot. Mercury glass lamps add a bit of sparkle. A Whittemore-Sherrill armchair of driftwood gray and celadon lambskin leather situated in the corner is from International Design Source, as is the light sand colored upholstered desk chair with driftwood legs. The pewter-painted Henredon desk is a wonderful space to catch up on correspondence or work on a laptop. The sliding doors are now framed by airy sheers instead of the busy pattern of the former drapes. On the balcony, twin chaise lounges of weathered teak and mingled gray fabric, offer a prime view of Tiburon’s Greg Norman-designed golf course.

BEFORE

Above: Instead of the original king bed in this guest room, the homeowners opted for matching full beds to maximize sleeping options for visitors. The Vanguard beds are fully upholstered with inset linen panels surrounded by nail-head-accented pearl leather. Twin Kravet benches, upholstered in textured, high-performance woven cotton, have oil-rubbed bronze legs to complement the dark wood floor. The same fabric is also used on coordinating decorative shams. A lamp of teal-glazed porcelain with a fabric shade sits on the pearl leather-topped nightstand. The khaki-toned wool rug creates a striated pattern, echoed in the lines of the sheer natural woven window treatments, banded in the same aqua shade as the duvets.

Opposite: A weathered gray chest from International Design Source is adorned with mirrored drawer-fronts and doors reflects the colors and textures of the guest bedroom. Atop, a celadon-green bottle vase holds botanicals, a shell fresh from the nearby beach, and a coral-inspired bowl providing a home for raffia balls and pearlized Capiz shells. An abstract landscape painting recalls the sea and sky when a storm is brewing. In the guest bath just beyond, the 3-D origami artwork provides visual interest in the minimalist surroundings.

Left: Behind the Kravet king bed in this second guest room are sheer, woven draperies with silver metallic stripes are paired with a woven-wood shade to ensure the morning light from this east-facing window doesn’t disturb sleeping guests. An abstract painting shares the wall with another woven wooden shade, adding color and personality to the room. Geometric patterns on the bed pillows mimic shapes within the painting. The dark wood bed frame references the dark wood flooring. A subtle print on the oyster cotton fabric, which wraps the frame and headboard, supplies texture. Two pearlized whitewashed wood side tables by Vanguard Furniture are topped with pierced-metal lamps with linen shades, adding a soft luster to the scene.

LUXURY LIVING WITH WALKABILITY

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

T

This chic Naples retreat caters to those desiring a luxury urban lifestyle— fine restaurants, boutique shopping, and cultural events are all within walking distance; beautiful white sand beaches and some of the best golf courses in the country are just a short drive away. The two-story Le Parc home in the Residences at Mercato is designed for buyers who want the privacy of a single-family home with the benefits of living adjacent next to one of Naples’ hottest lifestyle locations, “You don’t need the overhead amenities of a condo community,” explains Mike Hoyt, the developer’s Senior Vice President, “because you have a private pool in your luxury home and everything you could want is a walk away. You can take advantage of the nightlife and then stroll home.” Matthew Kragh of MHK Architecture and Planning designed the entire enclave of homes. Kragh has built his career on coastal contemporary designs which borrow from Old Florida and West Indies architecture. Le Parc includes Kragh’s clean lines, signature bracketing, and most notably the white exteriors because, as Kragh says, “White is timeless.” Clive Daniel Home’s Charlie Hansen and Rebekah Errett-Pikosky completed the interior design, working with an organic palette of creamy linens, yellow and green mustards, rich espressos, and grays. “We wanted chic, clean lines, and no fussiness—the scale of each piece works with the sizing of the rooms,” explains Errett-Pikosky. Spacious and bright, the home features a gourmet kitchen that segues to a dramatic two-story great room where pocketing sliders lead to a courtyard and private pool—a seamless transition between spaces. The owner’s suite is just beyond, with its own entrance to the pool and private terraces. Upstairs, a gallery catwalk separates two en suite bedrooms from a loft, an additional en suite bedroom, and a bonus room.

Right: Design Studio by Raymond provided the Lauderdale-style UltraCraft cabinetry in Rag and Bone painted maple. The kitchen features a perimeter under-counter wine cooler, spice drawer, and pull-outs in the pantry cabinet. The Ocean Beige granite covered island holds the sink and dishwasher, double trash pull-out, and cutlery divider. The appliances are from Ferguson Kitchen Bath & Lighting Gallery. Jessica Charles stools have a charcoal and cream pattern. The chandeliers are from the Jonathan Adler Ventana Collection. A two-story accent emphasizes the grandeur of the great room. Custom Jackson Pollack-inspired art is painted in Eminent Bronze by Sherwin-Williams.

A HOME SPEAKS TO THE HEART OF OLD NAPLES HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

O

On a mahogany-lined street in one of Naples’ most significant neighborhoods lives a home fashioned with attention to exceptional style and an exuberant, yet sophisticated personality. Such a home found its niche on a premium lot in the heart of Old Naples, just six houses from the beach and a pleasant stroll to the amenities of 5th Avenue South. This classic Floridian-style home with five-bedrooms plus study, encompasses 6,213 square feet of impeccably designed, and artfully appointed space, with plenty of outdoor living areas. This home’s genesis began with VIV Homes, a boutique residential property development company committed to truly bespoke creations. Members of the VIV team nurture every detail, hand-selecting each finish, and creating one-of-a-kind homes. “The home maintains the graciousness of the street,” says architect Jorge Hernandez. “It invokes a sense of architecture which is relaxed and elegant. In my work, I usually fuse a sense of time and knowledge of history with the requirements of contemporary life and materials.” “When you walk in the house, you can feel that it’s different from other houses,” says Paul Stanton, VIV Homes exclusive builder, commenting on the construction quality. “It feels strong and solid. It’s quiet.” Every room in this home is generous in size and scale, and each detail accentuates the architecture by creating light and space. In appointing the interior, VIV Homes designer Melissa Raucci captures the home’s essence with a framework of inorganic symmetry in metals, glass, and light, all dressed in nature’s softer dynamic. “I like things which are one with nature and make a soft impression for a subtle moment,” explains Raucci.

Right: As one enters the home through the mahogany door, a pierced-resin Luna Bowl Chandelier from Oly Studios sets an elegant tone. Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring in European white oak in a Giuseppina finish, along with a blank canvas of neutrals, allows blue accents to complement the room’s silver, brass, and champagne metallic finishes. An oversized tufted ottoman, inset with custom glass, draws guests into the comfortable living room. Two sofas are flanked by whitewashed Beachwood side tables with mother-ofpearl hardware. Chairs echoing the kitchen caging and cabinetry create a seamless transition of space. Burlap stools accented with natural rope provide additional seating.

Above: Ethereal light from the tapered chandelier sparkles against the flat, earthy finish of a customcut jute rug in honey tones and the Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring from Naples Flooring. Custom slipper chairs with white chambray denim and burlap covers surround the table. A large gilded mirror over a buffet with brass underpinnings creates a window in the space. Warm gold tones of Phillip Jeffries grass cloth accent the dining room and the inset wall which houses a double Sub-Zero wine cooler. “It’s reminiscent of dining al fresco when you open up all the sliders and bring in the outdoors,” says Raucci.

Left: The kitchen maintains a rich environment designed to stand the test of time. Substantial Hudson Valley Wellington fixtures provide functional task lighting over the island. Creamy-suede backless stools with polished nickel caging nestle beneath the marble waterfall island in Mystery White from Rain Forest Marble. Gray tones of quartz top the perimeter-area counters, finished with a variegated marble herringbone pattern in the backsplash. Bold, polished nickel hardware accents the bespoke cabinetry and pairs with the Sub-Zero fridge and freezer, Wolf 48-inch gas range and wall oven, and a pair of Bosch dishwashers from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. A separate walk-in pantry with a Miele coffee station and partner desk complement the gourmet kitchen.

Above: Carrera marble in a weave pattern from Rain Forest Marble accents the master bath wall, adding a dimensionality that continues into the shower and water closet. A full run of beveled mirror opens the room and reflects light in this sun-washed space. A freestanding Kohler bathtub invites a luxurious experience.

Opposite: “With its own volumetric silhouette, the master bedroom very much feels like you’re sleeping in a garden pavilion,” says Hernandez. Located on the first floor, the room features French doors that open southward, blurring the lines between interior living space and an exterior garden. The Diva Opal White chandelier from Regina Andrew Design casts a glow over the chrome canopy bed. Mirrored bedside chests and a white Mongolian fur bench with acrylic Lucite legs accentuate the weightlessness in the room. “The space captures a warm, timeless moment. I wanted everything to feel like it was floating,” explains Raucci.

Above: The second-floor en suite bedrooms all grant access to a terrace that spans the home’s width, capturing the spirit of a boutique hotel. In this room, fuchsia Moroccan poufs provide a splash of color. Linen and leather appoints the shelter bed. A pair of framed gilded botanicals flank either side of the headboard, repeating the juxtaposition of organic curves and metallic finishes throughout the home.

Opposite: The study offers a positive vibe with crisp, feminine edges. Shadows from the abstract 20thcentury gold-pipe chandelier create an air of intrigue. The attention to dramatic lighting throughout the home illuminates a vignette in each space. To Raucci, lighting conveys energy and creates a dynamic flow and aesthetic.

307

Above: A stunning outdoor living space completes the property with flawless transition from inside to out. “When the doors open, the house becomes the garden,” says Hernandez. Automated screens and shutters protect the large covered lanai which includes a full outdoor kitchen with Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. Frette and Pratesi linens dress the cerused oak table with encased scallop shells and stainless steel legs. A cypress, tongue-and-groove ceiling provides warmth overhead.

Opposite: The home’s design and configuration on a generous lot takes into account a healthy amount of greenspace. Whether lounging on the pool’s Baja shelf, or enjoying family and friends around the fire pit, the home is designed to take full advantage of the outdoors. “It all feels warm and inviting,” says Raucci of the final creation. “We drill down until we create an absolutely perfect, harmonious environment. It’s resort-style living.”

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

Calling this a dramatic transformation might be an understatement. This beautiful home was revived by the award-winning design team of Rhett Josey and Wilfredo Emanuel. According to Josey, the design partnership on this home was as magical as the transformation itself. The kitchen was updated by refinishing the existing cabinetry in white with a contrasting gray island. The tops were replaced with Cambria in a dramatic, veined pattern with sparkling embedded crystals. Narrow tower cabinets were removed on the left and the wall finished with paved Abalone tile. The bar-height counter was brought down to counter height for a more modern and open feel. The kitchen remodel was completed with the addition of professional-grade stainless steel appliances. Wall-to-wall carpet in the living room was replaced with a marble that complements that in the foyer, creating a flow from one area to the next, and allowing a continuous lineof-sight to the water outside. Color-blocked, double-height draperies showcase the dramatic two-story living room. All the walls and trim are painted in Sherwin-Williams Shoji White to create a light, bright, and airy background. “Paint is our great friend when updating and unifying a home,” states Josey. All of the furnishings were replaced with crisp, tailored pieces. Aquamarine accent colors were chosen for the master bedroom. The ceiling and rug anchor the room and give it the punch of color it needed. Carpeting was replaced with marble. All furnishings were replaced with pieces that share a clean and simpler design. Natural silk was applied to the alcove above the bed. The flooring in the family room was replaced with French white oak with cathedral graining. The pass-through counter height brings an open cohesiveness to the kitchen and family room. The same Cambria in the kitchen is used at the bar. Soft goods were replaced with more inviting and comfortable pieces; simple linen panels accentuate the height of the room. “The dining room needed to be more inviting and commanding,” comments Emanuel. An octagonal dining table was chosen to mirror the alcove shape above. The original chandelier was painted gloss white as a contrast to the lacquered cobalt blue, drawn from the patterned draperies above. An existing credenza and a mirror, originally in the foyer, were lacquered to match the alcove ceiling. HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

The coastal architecture of London Bay Homes’ two-story Claremont design echoes its location, just a block from the Gulf of Mexico in Old Naples. Mature oak trees frame the custom five-bedroom, six-full bath home, awash in white and accented with Bahama shutters, board-and-batten and lap siding, transom windows, and even a porthole. Two

additional work space in the Claremont’s sizable kitchen. Equipped for the master chef, the space was designed with double ovens, a built-in espresso maker, a cooktop with subway tile backsplash and a hidden catering kitchen featuring a butler’s bar and wine room. Whether hosting intimate gatherings or elaborate parties, the Claremont is the perfect home for entertaining. Pale gray wood flooring and a pyramid ceiling paneled in driftwood tones recall an elegant beach cottage in the Claremont’s ground-floor master bedroom. Just steps from the pool and spa, the private retreat’s ocean blue accents and dark anigre wood furniture stand out against calm ivory walls. The Claremont was designed with multiple outdoor living destinations and a blending of indoor and outdoor spaces,” notes Mark Wilson, president of London Bay Homes, a leading homebuilder and developer in the luxury custom home market for more than 25 years. The tiled fireplace wall and wood paneled ceiling of the alfresco living room give the feel of an indoor space. An outdoor kitchen, dining area, TV and bar complete the space. A sunken fireplace and lounging area, chaises under a pergola, and multiple spillways and water features create the home’s private resort. Ocean blue glass mosaic tiles shimmer on an illuminated accent wall and around the perimeter of the custom pool and floating spa. Courtesy of London Bay Homes, www.londonbay.com

This unique home in the Moorings was built for a New England couple with distinct tastes. The home is a transitional craftsman style, designed to truly be one-of-a-kind. The design team of Jinx McDonald, Minka McDonald, and Janine Blume furnished this eclectic home with handsome custom pieces sourced by Century, Old Biscayne Designs, Hickory White, Vanguard, and Taylor King. A large, asymmetrical sectional was created to perfectly fit the angled lines of the great room. The great room features a soaring vaulted ceiling with expansive skylights finished with gray shutters, creating a sleek modern look that juxtaposes with the traditional craftsman beams. A Chippendale stair rail adds a romantic touch to the architecture. The great room focal wall, made from ten slabs of blue calcite and lighted from behind, features a linear fireplace, a large flat screen TV, and a curved bar. The unique bar continues into the outdoor living area when the sliders are pulled back, creating an expansive indoor/outdoor living and entertaining area. The open kitchen’s cabinets are finished in both light and dark grays and topped with Berwyn Cambria quartz countertops. Rich gray wood floors run throughout the open floor plan. A java barn door with ostrich leather inserts divides the great room from the master wing, which carries the home’s color palette of grays, whites, and blues, punctuated by dark java accents for weight and impact. A glass bottle Curry & Co. light fixture accents the dining room and an enlargement of a stunning photo from the clients’ recent trip to Antarctica. MCGARVEY CUSTOM HOMES The Mon Paradis grand estate model is a country French design with 5,141 square feet under air. Designed by Alberto Abad of New Architectura, the plan also features a formal dining room with refrigerated red and white wine storage, a study/parlor, four bedrooms, four full- and two half-baths, a pool bath, and a split design two- and a three-car garage. The home’s interior is designed by Ruta Menaghlazi, senior interior designer at Freestyle Interiors. Menaghlazi’s graceful design for this open home is juxtaposed with the rustic French influence evident in the vaulted dark wood-beamed ceilings and wire-brushed white oak hardwood flooring in the living areas. A massive great room with a soaring vaulted ceiling flows easily into a double-island kitchen and breakfast area. The kitchen commands attention with contrasting black lower cabinets and classic white uppers. The outer island, with backless wooden bar stools, features a stained walnut top. The food preparation island and perimeter have granite countertops. The 14-foot high windows are insulated to allow an unimpeded view while blocking the sun’s heat. The breakfast room extends from the kitchen and features two walls of windows and broad views of the pool and lanai. Menaghlazi installed banquette seating along the windows. The symmetry of the master en suite bath features his-and-her vanities, a bathing alcove with open shelving, and his-and-her water closets. The master suite includes a morning kitchen, two wardrobes, and a sitting area for two. The rear lanai features multiple gathering areas, an outdoor kitchen, and a fireplace displaying a split-face textured travertine cladding rising to the ceiling. ID•ÓL• O•GY INTERIORS Perfectly placed between the Gordon River and the golf course at Bear’s Paw is an enclave of 22 single-family homes known as the Landings at Bear’s Paw. The newly decorated, 3,905-square-foot under air Cayman II model offers an open living concept with a large great room, open dining room, and a large kitchen adjacent to the outdoor living area. “The design concept was based on accentuating the expansive golf course views, architectural detail, and open concept plan,” comments Libby Marx of ID•ól•o•gy Interiors. By creating a neutral backdrop with rich fabrics and textures, the design team chose to add vibrant pops of color to complement the vivid greens and blues outside. These pops of color paired with soaring ceilings and glass pocket sliders in the main living area draw the eye up and out over the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. The overall feel is tailored, fresh, and exceptionally livable. The stage has been set for enjoying a day by the pool after a round of golf, dining al fresco after a day on the boat, or entertaining at a moment’s notice. HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

When describing how the Pennsylvania owners wanted their Royal Harbor dream home to look and feel, it was clear the exterior would read urban modern and the interior California coastal. With its sleek linear lines, the finished home provides the owners everything on their wish list. The exterior of the home is a modern, beach house style. The unique glass garage door, and an array of tropical full-size palms and river rocks lining the landscape beds, set that stage. Inside the tall glass entry doors is a cascading, opentread staircase with stainless steel cable railings. The light fixture, sourced through Wilson Lighting, complements the unique design. Interior designer Maria Caruso provided a deeper level of tone and textures, adding warm colors, natural stone, and glass elements to the interior of the home. Legno Bastone Wide Plank European oak hardwood flooring from Naples Flooring runs throughout. A Venetian plaster finish completes the fireplace. The kitchen features clean, white Shaker cabinets and stainless steel professional grade Thermador appliances. The oversized island–one side for food prep and the other for guests–features Macaubas quartzite tops and a waterfall edge. The tiles on the backsplash are set vertically, adding to the contemporary look. A large walk-in pantry offers abundant storage. The spacious master bath features a walk-in, open-air shower with rain head and body spray fixtures. Italian Porcelain tiles are used on the floors and walls, with an on-trend vertical accent inset. The grand finale of the home is the tranquil outdoor living space, with its 360-degree cascading, glass-tile spill over spa. The tiles feature all the colors of the sea and the pavers the colors of the sand. A long-standing Naples resident and builder Thomas Martin understands that a smooth building project, requires a harmonious working relationshiop between client and builder. “When the perfect team comes together—builder and homeowner with one vision–it is the best opportunity to create something spectacular.” Courtesy of Thomas Martin Construction, www.thomasmartininc.com Photography: Blaine Jonathan Photography HOME & DESIGN 2017 V2

Beauty is in the details as can be seen in this stunning condominium remodel. Beginning in the kitchen, Naples Kitchen & Bath in-house designer Angie Keyes chose Ovation cabinetry in a combination of Pearl White paint and a maple pantry wall stained in Truffle Montage for contrast. The unique ceiling detail and matching stained wood trim incorporates it into the overall design. The artistic tile mosaics under the matching wood hood and behind the faucet are from Ceramic Matrix. Flooring is a gray finished maple. The master bathroom was renovated by removing the tub and redesigning the space to allow for a large shower and a spacious alder vanity Calder Suede Montage. The countertops are Fusion Gold granite which was also used to create a wall detail in the shower. The glass subway tiles are the perfect backdrop for the Holland crystal lights from Wilson Lighting. 12-by-24-inch polished Cream Marfil natural stone is used on the shower walls and honed for the floors. The guest bathroom uses an Ovation cabinet painted in Gray Goose with Schaub Symphony knobs. A Toto Guinevere sink in Cotton is under-mounted to the granite tops, with a backsplash of 1-by1-inch Lunda Bay Tomei glass tiles in Petra Natural. Shower features a combination of Lunda Bay tiles sourced from Ceramic Matrix with 2-by-2-inch limestone tiles from Dal-tile. The fixtures is from Access, sourced through Wilson Lighting. The laundry design with pooch in mind shows a dog-wash sink with commercial grade extending faucet surrounded by 3-by-6-inch white subway tiles. The cabinets, in Pearl finish, include a pull-out drawer that accommodates doggy essentials. Courtesy of Naples Kitchen & Bath, www.NaplesKB.com

THE SWEET ART GALLERY “When the home itself is a modern masterpiece, choosing the right artwork is paramount to the overall project,” says Dede Sweet, owner of The Sweet Art Gallery. That statement is illustrated the moment you enter this modern home and are greeted by a bright, colorful abstract original painting which sets the mood by declaring “this home is alive!”

Opposite the foyer in the formal dining room, an oversized painting commissioned by Miami artist Kurt Merkel, makes a statement. K2 DESIGN

Modern Italy was brought to Naples during the design of this penthouse master bathroom. With international influence playing a heavy role into the inspiration and emotion behind this space, CEO and design principal Jenny Provost brought inspiration from Francesco Rota, LaCava and Selvaggio Mosaics to create a masterpiece. Cabinetry is IRPINIA in Apco Polyluxe. A Oluce sconce and Hubbardton Forge pendant provide lighting. LaCava plumbing fixtures were primarily used. Countertops are Cambria Menai quartz. With modern simplicity being the focus in this penthouse kitchen, dimension, neutral colors, and fine lines became the inspiration behind this design. Custom IRPINIA cabinetry was used in matte Charred Maples and White Gloss. Countertops are Silestone Unsui quartz and backsplash tiles are from Walker Zanger. Island countertop is a blend of Cambria White Cliff quartz and Unsui. Stools are Lowenstein Bistro and the lighting pendants are Viso Round Zebra. Perfectly even back-lighting is no longer a designer’s challenge. EOS panels provide even back-lighting to the Wild Agate stone slabs on the surround. Cabinetry is by IRPINIA in white matte. Upper doors have aluminum frames with glass inserts. Fireplace is from Spark. Courtesy of K2 Design, www.k2design.net

KGT REMODELING

BEFORE

Built in 2003, this home needed more living space with a fresh and open feel. KGT Remodeling met with the owners to establish their dreams and design style, which resulted in removing the wall between the living room and the kitchen. The new design created a more functional kitchen while keeping the tile flooring intact per the owner’s wishes. A tile border was created with new inset tiles around the island. White Shaker cabinets are by Conestoga. The glass tile backsplash is PietraArt Bliss in Twilight Mist; the color chosen for the Pompeii quartz countertop in Urban. “A” LOCKSMITH

After collecting a substantial amount of jewelry and antique coins, the owners of this home chose a top-of-the-line, American made National Magnum 40 model from Liberty Safe. With 20 colors to choose from, they selected the handcrafted feathered-edge finish in gray charcoal to complement their family room. This safe features a 2.5-hour firerating and superior burglary resistance, as well as upgrades that include jewelry drawers, an electronic lock, and a dehumidifier. Frequent travelers, the homeowners added yet another level of security with Safelert, a device that immediately notifies them via text message if their safe is opened, too hot, or too humid. It even alerts them of movement and vibration which could indicate an attempted safe break-in. Courtesy of “A” Locksmith, www.alocksmithnaples.com
