Handcrafted walnut floors provide the perfect balance to warm this voluminous space. La Casa Tile, LLC claims an exclusive relationship with Naples-based Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring, “We are the sole distributors of Legno Bastone custom-engineered wood flooring in Sarasota,” coowner Maria Gelinas asserts. Arturo Guido of Legno Bastone speaks to the process of procuring the stunning walnut floors: “We started by selecting the finest mature walnut available globally. The veracity and maturity of the tree is exemplified in the magnificent burling that you see at your feet.” Clearly, the choice of dark flooring throughout the house is a huge part of what unifies the rooms. “Because of the overall size of the home we wanted to create a look with fewer seams and more panache. We provided lengths up to 12 feet for this project,” states Guido. With each hand-crafted European wide plank in place, the home is designer-ready. The gas fireplace is a strong focal point of the great room. Designer Gail Carlson of Gail Carlson Interiors Inc. describes, “the fireplace wall tapers up and the light limestone French pattern harmonizes the space, drawing the eye to the walnut mantle.” A cozy seating area—complete with accent pillows of F. Schumacher fabric, a Baker chair with leather strapping from the Laura Kirar collection, and a rug woven of natural sea grass—gives the room an airy feel. Carlson references a melding of Asian and Balinese influences with the aforementioned tropical West Indies architectural style: “The overall design is comprised of unfussy shapes and colors, with painstaking attention to natural materials and finishes. Rich, warm walnut woods, natural stone, matte surfaces, and lightweight cotton and linens combine for a soothing, tropical tranquility.” The panel on the left wall, an antique Batik framed fabric, offers accents of indigo and white that complement the linen blend fabric on the sofas and chair. Finally, keeping with the natural scheme, drift wood lamps with modern, square shades finish the room. The family room, which is featured on the cover, is centered around a custom wall unit made by Campbell Cabinetry Designs that continues the West Indies feel throughout the home. Sliding doors on the wall unit allow you to casually watch television or cover them up for a more formal, elegant feel. Continuing the theme of natural lighting, transom windows above the cabinetry lend brightness to the kitchen. The tongue-and-groove stained ceilings in the kitchen reflect the deep color of the flooring, maintaining consistency in pigment

making it “a little more casual and less heavy,” according to architect, John Cooney. In Cooney’s words, the plan was to keep things “light and bright,” and to “open up to the views for a cleaner, tropical look.” The shed dormer over the great room, the outrigger brackets, and the overhangs help to create that tropical ambiance in the architecture for the back of the home. In addition, a pool with an infinity edge allows water to cascade over the side, mimicking the body of water behind the house. There are pool deck terraces and a complete outdoor living room with seating and cooking availability to make outdoor living convenient and comfortable. Designer Gail Carlson may get the last words on this extraordinary custom build: “The objective was to create an environment where the clients were surrounded by quiet elegance and spiritual strength—a respite from the bustle of travel and a place to enjoy privacy and peace with their family.” From the formal West Indies-inspired façade to the natural and seamless interior, owners and guests alike will certainly achieve their Zen in this resort home.

The home also has a 1,200-square-foot guesthouse on the land, which is one of the remaining original elements of the property and also has solar arrays on the roof. The arrays’ sleekness allows the main home to maintain an untainted view of the water. But the most spectacular element of the home’s living space isn’t the view, oddly enough, it’s the staircase. Each step effortlessly floats off a commercial style elevator, which is disguised by concrete that’s fashioned to blend and cantilever from the wall. No bolts are visible, only steel wrapping around the elevator. “The staircase was for sure the most challenging structural element of the house,” explains Voigt. An engineer was brought in to ensure its safety, but that doesn’t detract from marveling at the sheer physics of the perceived impossible feature. “Each tread is like a diving board,” describes Voigt. “It’s a pretty unique staircase.” The elevator runs from the first floor, the beach-level garage that can hold up to eight vehicles and sits on deep concrete pilings all the way to the roof. In total, the elevator is in a nearly 50-foot shaft. The first floor also opens up to a 40-foot lap pool that has its own jacuzzi. The main floor also boasts a kitchen—with a bar, island and custom cabinetry. A hidden pantry is tucked behind and is disguised to look like a cabinet. The floor has a laundry room, powder bath, a dining room, a television room and a guest bedroom with its own views. Only the pantry and the bedroom are without views of the water. The main floor also has an outdoor living area that is entertainment-ready.

Above the main floor is the third floor, which overlooks the main floor. There, the master bedroom and bathroom catwalk to the stairs and elevator. The additional two bedrooms are on the other side of the third floor, each with their own bathrooms and balcony. Finally, the home’s prized feature, the roof deck. The entire perimeter is fashioned from glass, offering unobstructed views of the beach and the intercoastal waterway. The same color palette that flows throughout the entire expanse of the home is also present on the roof. For all the home’s beauty and success, however, for Sultana and Voigt the most valuable part of the home is the satisfaction the customer derives. “We don’t just build custom homes,” explains Voigt. “We build one-of-a-kind homes.”

What started as a vacant lot on Anna Maria Island has become the dream-home come true for homeowners Jason and Lauren Sato. Full of youthful energy, this couple envisioned a home that would be inviting to family and friends, yet sophisticated in its design, “The biggest thing for us was building a home that would be functional for our family” Mr. Sato explains, “We wanted to maximize the space and be able to entertain guests comfortably.” Regulations on the Island determined the floor plan of the home to some degree. It is required for new structures to reach a certain elevation for the main living areas. Unlike many of the other homes in the region that adhere to a multiple split-level layout, this Mason Martin Builders home keeps all the living space on one living plane on the second story. The entry level looks straight through to the pool cabana at the back of the house, serving as an entertainment space for the family, while the kitchen, living room, dining room, playroom, and all bedrooms are upstairs together. The façade of the home offers a glimpse of this unassuming, modern blueprint. Sylvester palms, from Right Way Design, frame the custom front door, welcoming guests without overwhelming the eye. “The Brubacher Brothers use handcrafted ipe, which is a Brazilian wood. The railing upstairs is custom, too. It is just great craftsmanship,” explains Jake Martin and Frank Agnelli of Mason Martin Builders. The symmetry of the house façade, with twin his and hers two-car garages bookending the entryway, features stone brought in from the Florida Keys. The wide-open layout of the upstairs connects the living room, kitchen, and dining room without hallways. It is therefore essential to create unity while defining each space. “The concept of the seating area allows everyone to be in the same room, but not in the same space,” says designer Jessica Holmes Holiday of HSH Designs. Tall ceilings give the room a loft feel; the seating divides the spaces into various niches that each pull in the clean lines of the modern design. It is the rug from Rugs As Art, however, that drives the colors for the living room. “This transitional rug is hand knotted in India of 100% wool and features rich blue tones complementing an oversized pattern,” describes Jesse Murse of Rugs As Art. The gray tones throughout the living room create a neutral, sleek palette that allows the rug to pop. Punches of color in the art and pillows tie the space together. Finally, the decision to extend the veneered, white onyx stone fireplace wall elongates the space, while a combination of floating shelves on the split face quartz wall,

When it came to the kitchen, Lauren Sato knew she wanted black and white. According to Brandon Campbell of Campbell Cabinetry Designs, “This is a great look, but poses the challenge of not being too stark. To achieve this, we chose a dark stain rather than a black paint. The hand-rubbed stain allows for the wood grain to bring a soft, yet rich depth to the finish,” adds Campbell. To tie in the dark island with the white background, Campbell decided to accent the interiors of the glass sections with the same finish. All the cabinets are made of maple, and the construction is inset which creates clean lines. Triplet crystal chandeliers over the island create a sophisticated light

diminishing the vibrant feel of the shouldering living room. Designer Holiday notes, “a black silk dim shade around the crystal chandelier adds depth and dimension to the space,” again working to set the room apart without detracting from other elements of the home. Sturdy and comfortable furniture complete the dining room, making it a perfect space for daily dining. The decorative touches on the chair backs, however, speak to the versatility of the dining room, and with the addition of the table leaf and extra seating, a sophisticated eating space emerges. The interiors by Marc-Michaels Interior Design are a blend of clean lines and classical elements that complement each other and create an elegant and stunning atmosphere. True to the word ‘transitional,’ you can’t help but be immersed in the beauty that echoes throughout this home. A connection is maintained with the repetition of plush fabrics, whimsical light play, and hint of sparkle from the contemporary fixtures and stunning finishes. Earth tones, pastels, and metallics harmonize with warm wood tones and rich textures; creating an enlightening environment for all who step through the door. Inside the foyer, the traditional veneer of the home gives way to a more edgy, modern look, a fresh perspective on traditional design. Fletcher and Dupuis always start their design process with a “how should we orient the rooms?” planning session and ends with customizing a floor plan that will suit the clients’ specific needs and family lifestyle. “Our Siena model at The Lake Club in Lakewood Ranch takes full advantage of the oversized home site overlooking the expansive lake,” describes Dupuis. “We located all the major rooms of the home to achieve a spectacular rear view, including the master suite, library, living room, dining room, kitchen, family room, and bonus room,” adds Dupuis. These are the type of details that make this model so special. The custom closet systems by Contemporary Cabinetry & Closet Concepts are just one example of the exquisite features throughout the home. Each contributor to the home enjoyed the process as well. “It’s always such a pleasure to work with Roy’s team at Anchor (Builders). Brenda and the group are professional and have a great eye for detail,” states Matthew Jones of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. “Their Siena model is a great representation of the quality products we showcase here at our showroom,” explains Jones. maximum amount of rooms on the view while allowing the guest rooms to remain private, and the large outdoor living space is located as an extension of the leisure and bonus rooms. “When I design a model, it is different than designing a custom home for a particular client. I have to design it for a broader appeal. It has to be designed with the vision of the opportunity to be flexible to different buyers,” explains Fletcher. The lifestyle that the Siena model offers is the close relationship to the rear views and outdoor living. Almost all of the rooms have views to the rear yard. The guest suites are designed to be more private and separate from the entertaining spaces, one of them with its own entrance to the courtyard.

| Anna Maria Island |
Anna Maria Island is a quaint Barrier Island nestled in the Gulf of Mexico. Beautiful turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and pleasant temperatures have drawn visitors to this hidden gem for over 200 years. Until 1921, the island was only accessible by boat, and today it remains a place where “Old Florida” charm can still be found, flip flops are the way of life and the speed limit never exceeds 35mph. High rise condos and fast food restaurants are pleasantly absent from this pristine “get away from it all” island. Instead, the island offers a host of art galleries, boutique shops, fine and casual dining experiences, and abundant recreation adventures. The entire island is a bird sanctuary, sea turtles come ashore to nest from May through October, and bottlenose dolphins are a frequent sight off the coast. From quaint rustic cottages by the sea to million-dollar villas there are accommodations for every style of leisure and luxury. For additional information, call the Anna Maria Island expert:

| Venice Island |
It’s no coincidence that Venice, Florida shares its name with the legendary Italian City of Canals. In the late 1800’s a prominent Gulf Coast pioneer, Frank Higel, suggested the name “Venice” because he was moved by the scenic waterways leading out to the azure Gulf of Mexico. Wisely, the emerging community chose John Nolan, a famous city planner, to design the city. The results are truly extraordinary – sweeping tree-lined boulevards leading to beaches, parks, greenways, the Intracoastal Waterway and residential areas. The architecture is eclectic, its town center Mediterranean influenced. Its homes and condominiums offer a combination of mid-century modern, contemporary, Tuscan, and brightly painted Old Florida-style residences. Venice Island offers a unique opportunity to live alongside the Gulf of Mexico, with its quaint shops, dining, boating, fishing, bike paths, cultural and other recreational activities. Sandy beaches, golf courses, and a relaxed Florida sensibility … you’ll be taken in by a friendly and walkable community where the quality of life is truly remarkable. All of the cabinetry and wood detailing in The Avianna was designed, built and installed by Albrecht Cabinets of Sarasota. Three timeless pendant lights illuminate the honed Kozmus granite topped island. The same granite was used as the Wolf 48” Dual Fuel Range backsplash flanked by pearl subway tiles. This cook’s kitchen would not be complete without the separate Sub-Zero 30”refrigerator and freezer, Wolf convection oven, warming drawer and at the dry bar, a separate Sub-Zero 24” drawer refrigerator. Hidden behind a matching panel door is a generous sized walk-in pantry. With its disappearing sliding glass doors, the family room has the ability to be completely open to the outdoor living spaces. This configuration is ideal for entertaining and enjoying the outdoor seating areas either for dining or fun. In such a grand space, creating a comfortable atmosphere can be a challenge, but the interior design team at John Cannon Homes has achieved just that with its selections of furnishings and rich accent colors. Using multiple layers of texture, this expansive room was made to feel very warm and inviting. The rich wood coffee table, leather chair, and wood beamed ceiling details pop in contrast with the soft light blue pieces in the space. Another great use of juxtaposition is the jute rug, which brings a nice textural element to the room in contrast with the silk throw pillows. Just off the study, the master bedroom is a welcome retreat. A spa-like atmosphere is created with a serene shade of blue and offers multiple areas for relaxing. The hickory brown distressed hardwood floors are softened with the pairing of crisp white linens, opulent silk draperies, and a plush white rug.

Halogen lights cast a shadow for dimensional effect in the simple split-faced white marble architectural elements that flank the granite topped space-saving built-in buffet. A wall of beveled mirror tiles reflects the pattern of the walnut travertine floor tile laid on the diagonal. Opposite: The kitchen features colorful combos in the custom cabinetry. Dark tones accentuate the cooktop while the rest of the cabinets boast a distressed finish. Handscraped wood borders the travertine tile floor, echoing the contrast of light and dark. Upholstered bar stools with woven sea grass backs have a dual tone finish.

Voluminous 12-foot ceilings make possible the bright, open atmosphere and offer opportunity for creative finishing touches with layers of crown molding. Several rooms feature extensively trimmed tray and coffered ceilings where Fleming used the lofty space to draw the eye upward with distinctive paint detail. The spacious gourmet kitchen is equipped with top-of-the-line Thermador appliances, including a double oven. The professional quality gas range features a pot-filler mounted into the glass mosaic tile backsplash. Granite tops the counters and the convenient kitchen island with its prep sink. The built-in desk nook can serve double duty as an extra seating area. The smaller, glass-fronted cabinets provide storage for serving ware or display space for collections, including special occasion libations. An elegant butler’s pantry connects the formal dining room to the kitchen, while a breakfast nook provides casual dining between the living and family rooms. A pocket door creates a two-bedroom, one-bath mini-guest suite.
