I have admired Home & Design since I began my career in the design industry five years ago, and as I sit down to write my first letter as editor, my heart is filled with gratitude. I am most excited to continue Home & Design’s powerful legacy and strengthen relationships with the all the talented individuals our team proudly calls clients, and more often than not, friends. As a native Southwest Floridian, I have a true appreciation for those who have made our (once small) community what it is today. The homes we are featuring in this issue showcase the broad spectrum of design present in the Suncoast area. From elegant transitional beach homes to contemporary masterpieces on the Bay, I find myself so inspired by all the carefully selected details that complete each design and undoubtably make our slice of the Suncoast exceptionally unique. As we move into our season and the holidays, I look forward to collaborating with you to further propel our industry, seeking wisdom from the seasoned and fresh perspectives from the newcomers, and watching the conversations that inevitably unfold. Enjoy the magazine,

The root of design is the BOLD showing of truth. People make a living in design copying the IMAGE of truth instead of understanding the formula that develops it. It is from this awareness where innovation is sparked.

Previous Spread: The atmosphere of the master bedroom is akin to a soothing breath of saltwater-infused air. The room is appointed with a barreled ceiling and generous windows to frame the incredible beach views. Hidden blackout shades from Digital Homes are cleverly concealed within the window casings, perfect for sleeping in on lazy vacation mornings. The bed from Studio G Home, with its sleigh headboard and low profile side rails and footboard, is embellished with a delicate, hand-painted metallic detail. It is dressed in Italian linen and comfy cotton designed to be more casual than pristine. Dutch pillows stand in for the usual Euro shams, and a faded floral Ralph Lauren pillow and fringed alpaca throw complete the ensemble. Overhead, a romantic chandelier delicately hangs.

A couple selected this waterfront property to build a beach house they intend to use as the gathering place for their large, close-knit family. The husband and wife, who hail from the New England area, envisioned a home that embodied Northeasternstyle architecture, but also fit within the context of a southern beachfront property. u
Above: As seen from an alternate vantage point, the warmth of this all-important living area is further conveyed by the introduction of deeper tones in the console and contrast tops of the multipurpose built-in wall unit. One can imagine lounging in the whitewashed cane chairs while the fireplace glows, lingering over a glass of wine poured from the vast collection contained within the three-door refrigerated wine cabinet. Left: The great room, awash in pure white and alabaster with touches of timehonored Wedgewood blue, captures the essence of a chic beachfront residence. Carefully selected elements include the European oak flooring by Bassano from La Casa Tile and a sun-bleached cocktail table (with hidden storage space beneath its lid) from Studio G Home. The sofa, upholstered in pre-washed linen for softness and staying power, is ideal for relaxed living. A seagrass rug and driftwood lamp further accentuate the oceanfront elegance, and even the elongated onyx bowl possesses a seashell quality.

Fortunately, the team of highly attentive experts they enlisted used its combined insight and talent to make this vision a reality. Interior designer Gail CarlsonBrundage of Studio G Home firmly grasped the desired aesthetic. Architect Don Cooper worked within the framework of a traditional architectural language to lend the residence a sense of timelessness. And builder Brent Whitehead made the owners feel comfortable in expressing their individuality while preserving the natural beauty of the property. This enabled the residents to relax and focus on what mattered most: building a home that was large enough for their whole family to spread out, have fun, and enjoy. “We were all so blessed to have had the opportunity to work with such a beautiful couple, whose vision was to create memories with loved ones,” Whitehead remarks. u

Above and Right: The kitchen island is appointed with seven comfortable upholstered counter stools, a good indication that this is a home designed for a large, close-knit family. The use of Azul Imperial quartzite from Omicron Granite on the backsplash and countertops brings a richness rarely found in a typical beach cottage. Designed for function, this kitchen is outfitted with two galley sink stations, as well as faucets and a pot filler by Brizo, all from The Plumbing Place. Handformed, translucent decorative pendants, fashioned in clochette style (the French term for “little bell”), coordinate perfectly with the cabinetry by Epoch Solutions. Glass door fronts reflect light and add translucency in contrast to the crisp white cabinets built to optimize every available inch for storage and organization for the homeowners.

Architecturally, a personality befitting the home’s setting was integrated by Cooper. “Materials, colors and proportion of windows to walls all convey character in subtle ways not readily apparent,” he says. “In addition, the flowing floor plan, which allows for easy circulation among spaces, was also a large contributor. Different ways to get around bring a spirit of adventure.” Likewise, Carlson-Brundage astutely infused the spaces with warmth and a comfortable elegance by using a crisp coastal color palette of linen, oyster, and stone, married with pure white and punctuated with delft blue, sun bleached woods, and white-washed finishes throughout—perfectly in tune with the backdrop of the ocean. To keep the ambiance relaxed and friendly but still elevated in style, the designer incorporated pre-washed linen, the perfect year-round fiber. “It’s washable, breathable, durable, and gets softer over time,” says Carlson-Brundage. “It also regulates to the temperature; cooling when it’s humid and warming when it’s chilly. It’s a beautiful fabric to use in Florida.”
Above: The bright and cheery master bath offers abundant space for his and hers prep and pampering. Behind the vanity’s three mirrors are hidden medicine cabinets, just one example of the detailed cabinetry and millwork by Epoch Solutions thoughtfully crafted for this detailoriented homeowner. The undulating lines of the soaking tub and frosted glass sconces add “curve” appeal, while the sand-toned, honed marble floors complement the matte finish of the cabinetry. Window mullions and palm trees are reflected in the mirror above the makeup vanity, and Carlson-Brundage added a buttoned-up chambray slipper chair for a touch of blue amidst a sea of cream and white.
The interiors she masterminded suggested a certain Cape Cod sensibility, combined with a bit of Hamptons aesthetic, putting the family right at home. “It’s an elegant beachfront estate, but there’s nothing pretentious about it,” says Carlson-Brundage. “Despite the grandeur of its scale, the home is cozy and casual. And it’s not just a pretty picture of interiors with fluffy pillows; it’s designed for real beach living.” And then, of course, there’s that awe-inspiring beach. “The first time the family gathered together at the beach house, it was the 4th of July. “I can imagine that all of them enjoying the fireworks from the beach was truly magical,” Carlson-Brundage muses. n

Above: This guest room was designed with a light touch. The four-poster bed features an upholstered headboard and footboard with sloping curves and a mini nailhead trim. Tone-on-tone cream and white bedding impart a crispness to the room, while a sisal area rug references the beachfront locale.

Above: A guest cottage attached to the home, which has its own separate wing, includes a living and dining area that opens to a kitchenette fit with appliances from Mullet’s Appliances. A custom Epoch Solutions built-in banquette (complete with storage!) and a pair of linen slipcovered chairs surround a planked wood table with trestle base, creating a delightful dinette. A hyacinth swivel chair and oyster-colored coffee table with a barley twist leg perpetuate the seaside vibe.

Above: The VIP fortunate enough to occupy this guest bedroom is in for a treat. The antiqued four-poster bed is finished in the faintest hint of Swedish blue and detailed by gilded accents and a nailhead tape that trims the linen upholstered headboard. The classic white bedding by Studio G Home has dainty tawny brown embroidered accents, and an enchanted garden of floral draperies features tones of powder blue, citrine, raspberry, and blush. Lamps with lacy pierced bases adorn the graceful bedside tables. Due to the room’s eastern exposure, rays of morning light pour in—something so wonderful to wake up to. “It really is a charming, sweet space,” Carlson-Brundage comments. Right: “What do you do when six guest bedrooms are not enough? You create a bunk room for 24!” says Carlson-Brundage of the bunk room, which is reminiscent of a ship’s sleeping quarters. This space, more than any other in the beach estate, exemplifies that the home was created for a large family. Nautical elements—from the navy and white palette, to the brass bulkhead lights, and even the three Currey & Company rope-wrapped suspended pendants—infuse a marine theme into this kid-friendly room. A vinyl composite that emulates wood was selected for the floors for ease of maintenance. There’s ample cubby space for clutter control and even an adorable reading nook with built-in bookshelves. The ingenious design includes lower drawers that contain pullout trundle beds, so when the slumber party ends, there’s no shortage of places to get a good night’s sleep.

Below: A deep porch overhangs the swimming pool, placid when all the little “fishies” are asleep. Beneath it are two oversized columns and corbels that are both structurally supportive and decorative. The spa, comfortably tucked beneath them, reflects the dramatic glow of the lanai’s outdoor lighting.
Above: The house is large enough to incorporate two slightly different architectural styles; the front displays a more classical detailing, while the two rear wings are more within the Florida vernacular, with hip roofs and exposed rafter tails that reference Old Florida architecture. Shutters painted Rainstorm Blue from Sherwin-Williams add punch to the lower windows, while the shade of the metal roof virtually melts into the sky.

You wouldn’t be surprised to see gentlemen in white dinner jackets, women in satin gowns, or a young Louis Armstrong blowing his trumpet in the corner of an elegant cocktail party in this 1,770-square-foot, two bedroom, two-and-ahalf bath condominium at the Vue, a high-rise in downtown Sarasota. With all the sophistication of a Cole Porter lyric, the wit of a Noel Coward play, and the grace of a Fred and Ginger waltz, designer Kurt Lucas of JKL Design Group evoked the glamour of the 1930s in his latest project. Working with designer Liz Ditzler and his long-time partner, Ron Butine, the trio transformed the home into a shimmering, sensuous retreat. u
Left: Overlooking Sarasota Bay, the living room features a custom entertainment center by Metal Creations Design & Fabrication of walnut and gold leafed aluminum with a leather accent wall. White velvet Weiman sofas host burgundy velvet, gold-trimmed bolster pillows made in JKL’s in-house workshop, L3Workroom. A circular chandelier by Kuzco Lighting lights a Restoration Hardware black marble coffee table. A cowhide rug delineates the space and offers a soft place for Kai the cat to nap. Lucas picked up the bust of David at a going-out-of-business sale at a Tampa statuary shop, and it has lived with him in his last three homes.

Bolier & Company chairs of black patent leather alligator, sport hound’s-tooth Romo fabric, accented with a red velvet welt (added by Lucas) atop ebony wood legs. Between the chairs is an hourglass table in chrome and metal by John-Richard. Kährs oak flooring in a linen finish is UV-based (as opposed to the more traditional urethane) so that rubbing in more oil easily erases any scratch marks. Left: True Old Hollywood glamour is displayed in the show-stopping powder bath. A black-and-white herringbone grasscloth Arte fabric adorns the accent wall and is reflected in the tall mirror cut by Fox Mirror. The mirror is offset from the wall and LED lights are recessed behind it, cunningly giving the illusion that the mirror has a herringbonedetailed frame. A Solaris chandelier from Kuzco, which reflects off a matte black wall, further illuminates the room. The custom built charcoal gray concrete sink by Schascle Yochim includes a walnut board with white veining, as a side shelf. Brizo Litze faucets are inset into the mirror itself.

Lucas and Butine don’t cook so they set up this dining “lounge” to provide an intimate setting for cocktails and canapés. Set on a Fabrica Fine Carpet rug, custom Tomlinson chairs are clad in pewter pleated velvet. A Kuzco chandelier of black aluminum tubes inset with crystals was chosen as “smart, clean lighting that doesn’t visually consume the space.” The cityscape is by Lucas’ favorite local artist, Tom Stephens.

“Ours was the first resale in the building,” says Lucas. “We began by gutting all the floors, lighting, and countertops.” Such drastic change is not foreign to Lucas and Butine, who buy and renovate a new project every two years. From modern town homes to the creation of a castle, the pair bring a property up to their exacting “premium standards” and then sell and move on to the next project. “It is our passion—to make a property outstanding,” explains Lucas. “We start pulling photos of things we see and like, while keeping an eye on latest trends. Tastes change—ours certainly do—and we have a great time with each new incarnation.” u

Above and Right: Subtle sophistication is the hallmark of the master bedroom. Brown cork with silver backing, merges with another wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries in platinum and silver. Gold metal bands were added by Metal Creations Design & Fabrication to add definition and additional texture. This combines all the metallic tones of the home into one stunning statement wall above the slatted headboard of the white lacquer and walnut EMEDE bed. A fiberglass Zeppelin chandelier by FLOS features an opaque, iridescent wrap over a chrome base and casts soft lighting on to an original abstract by JKL’s own Liz Ditzler (“a woman of many talents,” brags Lucas.)

The two have been together and enjoying such projects for 27 years. “I booked a flight from my native Oklahoma City (I say I was paroled early) with only $300 in my pocket. Now I have the largest design firm in Sarasota,” says Lucas. “Though Ron isn’t a professional designer, he has an innate ability, wonderful taste, and has educated himself with exposure to great design. We lovingly guide and inspire each other.” When it is time to move on to the next project, Lucas says, “We pack up our clothes, our Persian gray cats, Kooper and Kai, and our fine art pieces (which are part of our souls) and off we go.” When it comes to designing for others, Lucas credits their success to one principle: “We design without fear. We don’t care what your neighbors will think or what your best friend disapproves of, but rather fit your personal lifestyle,” he says. “We bring our full passion to every project.” n

The same earthy wood lines the towel storage compartment and Japanese-inspired table legs under the dual vanity. A Tom Stephens’ original, from his recent modern cycle, holds pride of place in the master bath. The walls, clad in Rodano Silver by Porcelanosa, a charcoal gray porcelain tile, create a soothing backdrop in the glass shower. The room’s main floor, set with white pebble tile by Dune, features a clever tile “rug” designed by Lucas using laser-engraved porcelain tile.

FAMILY FOCUSED
C
Creating a peaceful retreat with a playful side for a large and loving family was the charge of architect Yehuda Inbar of Inbar Architecture, AIA. He had a two-acre heavily wooded waterfront property—nestled in a protected coastal hammock on Manasota Key—on which to place a house, with room for his clients, their five adult children, and thirteen grandchildren. One of the highest priorities the couple insisted upon was minimal disturbance of the natural habitat and preservation of all the live oaks on the property. So enamored of the oaks were the owners that they asked Inbar to aim for the feeling of a tree house. u

Inbar designed just that, creating a nine-bedroom, ten-bath home with 6,455 square feet under air that made the most of panoramic views over the property’s private island and Lemon Bay. To ensure plenty of opportunities for recreation, the home includes a swimming pool and spa, a guest house with an outdoor shower, a putting green, and fishing docks. “For my design philosophy, I was focused on my clients’ health and wellness,” says Inbar. “I asked how they wanted the building to feel and what gave them a sense of wellness and joy. With an abundance of feedback, a family retreat center was born.” The two-story concrete and glass building was created using form-and-pour architecturally exposed concrete. The exterior sheer walls give a sense of solidity. “The building is free of ornamentation and favors rational detailing tempered with elements of lightness and grace,” explains Inbar. The cantilevered concrete overhangs create balconies to expand the living space and provide protection from the sun and rain. All rooms are graced with floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows to invite in natural light and the exterior habitat. The house is comprised of four components—it’s center acts as common living space for gatherings; north and south stairwells act as bridges to eight private suites; a plinth of outdoor space incorporates the pool, spa, and the outdoor kitchen, and dining areas; and a remote multi-purpose guest house using salvaged steel and recycled aluminum along with regional masonry units,” says Inbar. “I also connected the building to the native landscaping by way of cypress wood ceilings and white oak flooring. I also allowed lots of natural light in, but used automated lighting controls and shades to complement the natural shade produced by the live oaks I preserved.” u

Rivaling a five-star hotel, the home’s pool and spa have water features that shoot beams of light along the water stream.
Such concern for the environment earned the home the designation of a “LEED Platinum Certified Building.” A photovoltaic three-battery system and cistern can run off the grid, and is designed to withstand any adverse weather condition. “The LEED Platinum certification on a home of this size and unique shape took extra attention to detail to ensure a high score,” says builder Brian Mayotte of BUILD, LLC. “We spent many hours figuring out how to work solar electrical, solar water heating, the cistern, and the battery backup into and around the existing hammock,” he says. “It was challenging, but we did it.” u

The home has a complete thermal enclosure system which includes comprehensive air sealing, quality-installed insulation, and high performance windows to deliver improved comfort and lower utility bills. The HERS (Home Energy Rating) of the home is now minus 16, which means the home’s entire energy bill is actually minus $3.00. “Such attention to detail has earned BUILD a solid reputation for sticking to our core values of honesty, excellence, quality, character, longevity, and community,” says Mayotte. “Our service value is equal to our technical value, which creates loyalty from our clients.” Creating enduring relationships with her clients is also important to interior designer Rosemary Chase. “Personal relationships develop and that’s the fulfilling part of what I do,” says Chase, who also relies on a close professional relationship with architect Inbar. “I work almost exclusively with Yehuda, who is, by far, the most talented architect I know. He and I work smoothly and in tandem on our projects.” Chase followed the architect’s lead with a holistic approach to design. She says, “Every project is a new adventure, bringing challenges and excitement and each is an opportunity to grow. I found this project particularly enriching.” n

“Bespoke” is the buzzword for this extraordinary waterfront home. Located on Lido Key, the neighborhood of Lido Shores is a special place that conveys the rich history of Sarasota through its variety of architectural styles. The homeowners, who couldn’t settle on just one style, enlisted architect John Potvin to create a home that included several timeless elements customdesigned to suit their liking. Michael Voigt, president of Voigt Brothers Construction is no stranger to building on-of-a-kind homes. “From the elaborate millwork and tile details, to the aquarium and pool area complete with a grotto, the surprises never stop, whether you’re inside or out,” describes Voigt. u
Left: Architect John Potvin’s design, majestically displayed, melds an assortment of styles. The roof lines and plantation shutters denote West Indies island living, the contrast of light and dark is characteristically transitional, lantern lighting references Old World, and the pagoda-style entry calls to mind Asian construct. It’s eclectic, it’s fearless…and most importantly, it works!

Pike designed the living room to stand the test of time, using exquisite pieces to be treasured and passed down as heirlooms to future generations. The Ebanista chair, upholstered in a cut velvet zebra print by Osborne & Little, is finished in weathered stone. The three-part antique mirror and cocktail table are also by Ebanista. A gently curved Schumacher sofa bears petite twisted legs finished with brushed silver leaf and lush, pale gray velvet by Romo. The fireplace boasts a chic Glacier limestone surround. Set just alongside the silver and sapphire bamboo and silk rug from Stark, the gleaming Steinway & Sons grand piano is top of the line.

For this active family that relishes the outdoors, Voigt and his team used their dexterity and resolve to ensure that not a single element was omitted. “We are fortunate enough to build highly customized homes for many great clients,” Voigt says. Interior designer Gary Pike of Point West Designs felt equally blessed. Pike was able to live out a designer’s dream: carte blanche to design whatever he wanted. Determined to lend a history to the home despite its obvious new-construction status, he incorporated significant pieces to make every room special, and developed a color scheme sure to withstand shifting trends. “I used blues, silvers, and grays—a serene palette with a long shelf life,” Pike explains. “I was very lucky that the clients gave me creative license to design amazing things for them,” he adds. u

Though the project spanned several years, the team’s creative momentum never waned. Prefabricated simply wasn’t in their vocabulary; all the cabinetry from scratch. The same can be said for the lighting, the ceilings…even the closets (which are sure to make any fashion-lover swoon!). “Looking back, I sometimes don’t know how we did it!” Pike exclaims. Between the clients’ commitment to customization and the team’s opportunity to let their collective talents shine, this home, bespoke in every way, is truly in a class by itself. This home in Lido Shores sits on a lot that was sold by Ian Addy & Gail Wittig of Michael Saunders & Company. n

The ROMO wallpaper’s python-skin-meets-tribal design on the foyer’s accent wall establishes the color palette and global tone of the entire home. The vignette includes the clients’ own console of stacked cherry wood and champagne metal accents, artisan ceramic vases from Global Views, a Currey & Company statement chandelier with pale blue handblown glass “bubbles” from International Design Source. The oak floor was installed in a pattern so intricate, an accent rug would have been redundant. homeanddesign.net

For a well-traveled couple in the prime of their lives, no ordinary lakefront home would do. Nestled in the exclusive neighborhood of The Lake Club, a private community in Lakewood Ranch featuring scenic lakes and decorative bridges, it’s abundantly clear that a water view was of the utmost importance during the architecture and building processes.
“The home really capitalizes on the expansive lake,” says Claudine Leger-Wetzel, vice president of sales and marketing for Stock Development, a family-owned, full-service real estate company with decades of experience building distinctive homes custom-tailored to the Florida lifestyle. u

Above: The transitional kitchen is pitch perfect, with crisp white shaker cabinetry offset by warmer tones in the oak floor and Cambria Quartz island. Spherical, milky glass pendants from Bee Ridge Lighting and a set of hand forged iron swivel barstools with cushions upholstered in a hexagonal pattern from International Design Source add a dash of contemporary flare. “Pizzazz did a lovely job of bringing the elements together,” says Leger-Wetzel, a statement that holds major weight considering Stock was so instrumental in the Sarasota market’s evolution towards transitional design. Previous Page: To realize the homeowners’ goal of showcasing their collected artifacts, Ritter designed a custom wall unit with floating shelves in the great room. Its backdrop, a Thibaut metallic cork paper, also wraps the ceiling beams to accentuate the stunning architectural detail. Reflective surfaces such as the pearlized leather cocktail ottoman from Vanguard, and the mother of pearl painted accent table from Swaim, both from International Design Source, perpetuate the silvery tones. A pair of wood-framed chairs by Barclay Butera, upholstered in tie-dyed indigo, deliver an ethnic vibe. The three-tiered Elan chandelier from Bee Ridge Lighting commands attention without obstructing the generous lake view, and a Feizy rug grounds the space while melding rich tones of blue, taupe, and gray.
Tribal influences continue in the dining room, where the designers reupholstered the owners’ own dining chairs, and treated the draperies with the same bold, globally-inspired cream and blue fabric by S. Harris from International Design Source. A Lucite drapery rod infuses a contemporary feel, and a curvaceous Currey & Co. chandelier, finished in elegant champagne, softens the sharp edges of the dining table with its sculptural curves. homeanddesign.net

Setting aside the lakefront factor for a moment, there’s another reason this home is so special: it was a 50th Anniversary gift that the homebuyers gave to one another. “The goal was to provide a livable residence that gave the customer everything they wanted,” says Greg Weber of South Florida Designs, the architect behind this West Indies-style project. “And I feel confident saying that it has everything and more to fulfill the residents’ needs for this chapter of their lives.” Interior designers Marla Oppenheim and Marsha Ritter of Pizzazz Interiors, part of the Stock Family of Services, entered the picture early on. “We got in at the ground level… before there was even any ground!” says Ritter. The future homeowners, actively involved in the selection process, indicated a preference for textural materials, and upon further inspection of their previous home, the designers also observed that the couple had exceptional taste. “It was clear they liked fine, luxurious things, so we had to bring our ‘A game’,” Oppenheim recalls. u
Left: No detail was spared to achieve a global sensibility in the master bedroom. The Euro shams, bolster pillow, and tailored cornices feature an ethnic charcoal and ivory print from JF Fabrics. Black wire fixtures from Bee Ridge Lighting, oversized cerused charcoal wood Century nightstands, and sculpted bronze Phillips Collections figures from International Design Source all reference faraway continents. The designers customized the headboard of the Lexington bed with coral velvet fabric from Stroheim to coordinate with the owners’ own rug, and used Samuel and Sons rope and tape trimmings as finishing touches on the bedding and windows. “We observed from their original house that they loved detail—so anytime we could throw in a trim here or a fringe there, we did,” says Ritter. The owners are pleased, and apparently, the family’s mini Labradoodle “Max” is too!

Above and Right: It’s a material world in the master bath, where the dramatic gray veining marks on the wall and floor tile, and no two components of the opulent sterling and charcoal mosaic insert, are the same. A freestanding soaking tub and a silver-leaf embellished live-edge side table from International Design Source impart an organic feel.

The clients, who were entering their golden years, had traveled the world extensively and their personal belongings reflected that. But to achieve a departure from the predominantly Asian theme of their former residence, the designers aimed to fashion a look that was more “global.” To that end, they incorporated the clients’ pre-existing items with new ones that reflected the style of varietal cultures. “I believe the ability to do that successfully is the sign of good design,” says Oppenheim. And do it successfully they did. “Anyone would be hard-pressed to distinguish between what was old and what was new,” adds Ritter. u

117
Above: “One of things we recognize as a homebuilder is that everyone lives differently,” comments Leger-Wetzel. “That’s why a ‘flex room’ is such an attractive feature.” In this instance, the space features a set of bunk beds, custom-designed by Ritter, to be enjoyed by the lucky grandkids when they come to visit. Each has its own decorative pillow, conceived by Oppenheim using a Kravet fabric sourced through International Design Source with a nautical flag theme and contrasting flanges. Four Knoll leather chairs, as colorful as a box of Crayolas, flank 3 custom Charleston Forge laminate parsons tables that allows creative minds to wander. It’s also where their grandmother plays bridge, and where their grandfather (a kid at heart himself) constructs his Lego masterpieces! 118
homeanddesign.net
With keen attention to detail, a proficient use of color, lots of creativity, and as is their modus operandi, a positive and upbeat attitude, the ladies of Pizzazz Interiors not only fulfilled all their clients’ wants and needs, they treated them like family. Aside from helping the couple give each other the ultimate anniversary present, designers Marsha and Marla also gave them two new friends. And that is, perhaps, the greatest gift of all. n
Above: The forms of flattery in the guest bath are most sincere. The floors and shower walls are treated with a tile that emulates whitewashed wood, and the Phillip Jeffries grasscloth wallpaper, sourced through International Design Source, with its water-colored effect using shades of deep blue, are an ode to the aquatic wonder of the Florida Gulf.

Left: The perfect symmetry and balance of the front elevation lend themselves to the West Indies style so popular in this region. “The West Indies design is right at home within the relaxed tropical feel of the local landscape, says Weber. As is typical in most of the homes he and his firm designs in Florida, he has arranged the structure to maximize the views and allow as much light into the home as possible. Below: The lanai area encourages endless hours of relaxation and entertainment. A contemporary outdoor sectional and dining chairs from Lloyd Flanders, a set of lounges from Castelle, and swiveling counter stools from Telescope Outdoor, all sourced through International Design Source, provide ample seating. The mosaic-trimmed pool, with elevated sun shelf and spa, is refreshing and modern. Earthy tiles from Sticks & Stones Flooring create a captivating focal wall behind the well-equipped outdoor kitchen.

Bird Key may be a long way from Reno, Nevada, but mesmerized by beauty of its waters, the homeowners relocated without ever looking back. Initially, it was their daughter’s passion and talent for tennis that sparked their desire to purchase a home near IMG Academy, a boarding school for dedicated student athletes, but falling in love with the water, and the home’s proximity to Lido and Longboat Key’s beaches, is what truly sealed the deal. Bird Key’s eclectic mix of architectural styles offered DSDG Architects’ principal and lead architect Mark Sultana a world of possibilities. “You have Mediterranean Revival, ultra-modern, and everything in between,” he says. After deciding to do a coastal take on traditional, Sultana set his architectural plan in motion, tactically placing rooms and windows to make the most of Sarasota Bay’s gorgeous views. u
Left: “Everyone has their own interpretation of West Indies-inspired architecture,” says Sultana. “Mine is a coastal take on a traditional home—a low sloped roof of metal, or as in this case, flat concrete tile.” The front exterior profile hints at the soaring 20-foot foyer ceilings that lie just within the mahogany entry door. Copious tropical palms used in the landscaping remind the owners they’re a long way from Reno. The home had so much curb appeal that it sold within a mere two weeks of it being listed by the developer.

Above and Above Right: A handmade area rug from Rugs As Art anchors the great room, establishing the color palette and setting a tone of oceanic elegance. The Estelle mirrored cocktail table reflects the rug’s kinetic pattern, evocative of white capped waves in a tropical sea. A pair of sumptuous ivory leather tufted sofas by Bernhardt from International Design Source offer impeccable style and total comfort. Interior designer Linda Mixon customized accent pillows in vibrant aqua and royal blue, using silk and velvet fabrics by Kravet Couture. A sleek fireplace from American Grill & Hearth is set within a split-face white crystal quartzite ledgestone wall from Design Works, with beachy accessories decorating the glass shelves. Color blocked drapery panels—made from aqua and cobalt blue fabrics by Duralee—frame the water view.

Cabinets by Cucine Ricci, Arabescato quartz countertops and the backsplash, a slab with striking gray veining and waterfall edges, all together provoke a light and airy sensation in the kitchen. The chandelier by Elk lighting from International Design Source, a dazzling drum comprising thousands of faceted clear crystal beads, stops the show.

Above: Perfect for entertaining, the dining room flows effortlessly into either the kitchen or great room, due in part to the continuation of the hand-crafted European white oak Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring in LaFamiglia Giginella. Guests will surely be “wined and dined” at the Century wood dining table from International Design Source. The table’s base, and the legs of the six metallic tweed chairs around it, are made of clear acrylic to create an illusion of a floating effect. Below: “I wanted to respect my clients’ love of the ocean by using vibrant blue and teal in multiple ways,” says Mixon, where she punctuates the mushroom-colored upholstered sofa from International Design Source in the family room with custom pillows displaying a trellis pattern and an alligator print-embossed velour. Both fabrics are from Kravet. A sand-toned Mozambique wood and acrylic cocktail table by Vanguard centers the space, as does the shaggy luxe rug from Rugs As Art by Stanton’s Avant Garde collection. The pair of deep Bernhardt swivel chairs are swathed in turquoise to perpetuate the marine motif.

Since the homeowners had so assuredly expressed their desire to bring the colors of the ocean inside, interior designer Linda Mixon of Linda Mixon Design went with the flow. Instinctively, she incorporated sea-inspired tones of turquoise, aqua, and rich blues into the décor. “The clean and vibrant color palette drifts from the exterior bay right into the interiors,” says Mixon. And to satisfy their lust for sparkle, she also mixed in some bling. Case in point: the master bedroom, where the colors are quieted, but the glamour volume is cranked up with crystal fixtures and iridescent textiles. “It was important for me to make them feel like they were retreating into a space that had the ambience of a luxury resort with the feel of home,” describes Mixon. The residents might have changed locations, but their personas remain constant, regardless of how the tides may shift. “The overall feel of the home reflects who my clients are—warm, inviting, and one of a kind,” says Mixon. n
Above and Above Left: A stunning departure in palette, matte gold and ivory hues characterize the luxurious master bedroom. The walls are awash with Benjamin Moore’s Shaker Beige, a neutral go-to for many designers. The upholstered headboard by Caracole Home Furnishings is spun with gold threads, creating an intricate decorative pattern. The bedding ensemble by Lili Alessandra from International Design Source, both opulent and understated, boasts shimmering shell tones, while the cozy plush rug places softness underfoot. A quarter-sawn oak nightstand by Caracole Home Furnishings, finished in warm Heron Grey, features a beaded trim along its drawers. The drapery panels—using a diamond-patterned sheer fabric by Victor Thomas—and a lacy crystal Minka Metropolitan chandelier add delicate finishing touches to this lovely oasis. homeanddesign.net

Left: This aqua, white, and chrome guest suite is sure to make any visitor feel glamorous! The gray shag-like rug, white fur benches, and curvy accent chair soften the abundance of contemporary silhouettes present in the space. Below: As relaxed as life in the tropics may be, sometimes you must work hard before you play hard. Therefore, the home is equipped with a functional office space, designed with an airy aesthetic so as not to diminish the leisurely vibe. Subtle blues in a hand-loomed New Delhi rug from International Design Source meet clean lines from a barely-there chrome and glass desk. A custom built-in by FineCraft Custom Cabinetry uses Conestoga’s Strata Collection carbon wood, and a tryptic beach scene photograph lets the Gulf linger on in the mind even during “work” mode. When work is complete, the homeowners can move outside to enjoy their stunning pool and view of Sarasota Bay.

A Clearwater Beach penthouse renovation wasn’t your typical clear-cut remodel. The clients, a couple from New York, wanted to create not just another vacation home, but a sophisticated retreat to rival the finest fivestar hotel. The three bed, three-and-a-half bath home had plenty of room at 4,280 square feet under air, but that space was empty, echoing, and extremely linear.
The transformation of this space into a truly spectacular home was assured when the creative team of Michelle Miller and Ciera Thompson of Michelle Miller Design brought their special talents to the project. “Just above this penthouse is the building’s pool and that not only gave us many constraints on our design, but there were drainage pipes everywhere, which we had to camouflage by incorporating them into our ceiling plan,” explains Miller. u
homeanddesign.net
155
Miller and Thompson worked closely with the architect to come up with clever solutions to the challenges the renovation possessed. “For example, we designed soffits in front of every window into which the shades disappear when not electrically lowered,” explains Thompson. “This allowed us to maximize the height of every window.” “We also designed many different types of ceilings in the home,” says Miller, “giving the illusion of height where we were actually prevented from raising the ceilings due to the drainage pipes.” “Everything was along one spine with lovely western views of the Gulf, but was long and narrow with low ceilings and no division of the space at all,” architect Jordan Behar recalls. The renovation was built around a plan that split the guest suites and master suites into separate wings using strategically placed interior elements, such as fireplaces, walls, and partial walls, to allow privacy for all and create common areas in the middle where the family and guests could come together. “Careful space planning was required to create connected spaces that flowed, but the design was difficult because we had to work with an existing building. Therefore we had to cocreate with the already installed plumbing, electrical, and architectural features of the highrise building,” explains Behar. “We had to be very creative.” u

Pushing the creative envelope while still meeting a client’s practical needs is something for which Michelle Miller Design is known. “We make a real deep connection to establish mutual trust with our clients. Learning their likes and dislikes and honoring their lifestyle is very important to us,” says Miller. “We start with a vision and walk our clients through the design process, from start to finish, until we make their dream and our mutual vision a reality.” n

ISLAND REVERIES

Wide verandas, high ceilings, and leafy courtyards were part of the vision for this Anglo-Caribbean home. Designed for a new six-lot community along the Manatee River, it features a unique one-room-deep plan using an old technique for bringing light and flow-through ventilation to every part of the house.
Interior designer Brenda Camlin and her husband, builder Kenneth Keating—both of Camlin Custom Homes—turned their attention to building details and the selection of livable furnishings that echo the community’s balmy village feel. Camlin selected furnishings to emphasize the wide volume of living spaces the model home has to offer. “With the entire width of the house taken up by the kitchen and living room, it is the lighting and furnishings which define activity areas,” she says. u
Left: A Georgian staircase befits the Colonial-style architecture found in Caribbean colonies centuries ago. Simple and elegant, utilizing deep porches and overhangs for cooling, this residence has its garage in the rear allowing for a fully-designed front elevation.

And there are so many activity areas in this three bedroom, threeand-a-half bath home. A spacious dining room flows into the living room and looks out onto the pool. Twelve-foot ceilings downstairs and 10-foot ceilings upstairs allow for tall windows and doorways with tropical transoms—all part of the British Colonial vibe. On the main floor, one of the two master bedrooms found in the home offers easy access to the courtyard pool. u
Above and Right: “Elegant millwork is one of the signatures of Camlin Custom Homes,” says Keating. The Anglo-Caribbean architecture highlights the use of mouldings both around tall windows and in ceiling features throughout. In the living room, tranquil sand and gray hues are introduced and will be carried on throughout the home. The masonry-carved gas fireplace draws together seating choices in linen and wood while a bold curved cocktail table holds center stage. The metallic chandelier is from Quoizel.

Brenda Camlin chose a wood and sisal chandelier by Feiss that echoes the table’s shape below. Below and Right: Custom cabinetry and the elegant island in the open kitchen serve as furniture-like connections to the more formal living room beyond. Backsplashes are in a crafted subway tile and the granite countertops make maintenance easy. Overhead, two lustrous pendants by Quoizel seem to harken to a faraway time.

Upstairs, the spaces are more defined. At the top of the stairs, a den is tucked in a bright nook with its own sunny view, and steps away, the second master suite opens wide to a river vista. With a 16-foot vaulted ceiling and French doors onto a veranda stretching the width of the house, the familiar palette of sand and gray enhances the view. Beside the master suite a third bedroom (or comfortable office) also enjoys the upstairs balcony. According to architect Don Cooper, the ability to use spaces in a variety of ways is often requested by today’s clientele. “Houses are getting smaller, but with better materials and refinement,” Cooper continues. “No longer are people going for the ‘McMansions’. Defined yet open spaces offer more options in terms of actually living in a home.” u

Left: The upstairs master bath is spacious and serene with Minka-Lavery’s stainless lamps from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. The glint of silvery accents highlight the natural striations in the vanity’s counter. Below: The high vault of the upstairs master suite allows for continuous flow of tropical air. A bold assertion in slate velour, the tufted wing-back bed sits between two white nightstands. Brenda Camlin left the downstairs uncarpeted, but softened the upstairs room in practical grays.
Below Left: A flexible space is used here as an office, with charming French doors open to the house-wide balcony overlooking the river. The aqua on the linen-covered chairs whisper that the river is steps away while the rustic desk hints that work must still be done.

And Florida living requires a pool. Here, an elongated splash pool is surrounded by plush woven furniture and a bank of privacy palms that make for an intimate rectangular courtyard. Even Keating seems pleased with the pool’s built-in banquette. “You could sit with your dog beside you in a few inches of cool water all day!” he says. Ah, yes. That is Florida living at its best. n
Above: Along one side of the pool, a bank of fishtail palms provides leafy privacy along with a painterly view. Take edgy ideas and sharp angles, add tasteful finishes and technology, then multiply them by panoramic views… and the answer is unequivocal: a distinctively modern waterfront home. To ensure a modern house doesn’t end up looking like a box, you need to think outside it. Strong lines make a powerful architectural statement, but not one that necessarily says: “warm and welcoming.” Fortunately, DSDG Architects’ principal and lead architect Mark Sultana, who was enlisted to design a custom home for a discerning client with exceptional taste, is a visionary who was more than up to the task. The desirable plot, situated on a canal leading to Sarasota Bay, was already home to an oak tree too impressive and stately to cut down. To preserve the tree, the architect had to tap into his ingenuity right from the get-go. “I decided to recess the front door to distance it from the tree,” says Sultana of his solution, which not only added interest to the façade, but also allowed the grand oak to continue thriving. u
Previous Spread: Sultana used a multi-dimensional composition to prevent the exterior from resembling “a stark white box.” Easily mistaken for wood, the detailing is in fact aluminum, digitally printed to read as walnut. Unlike real wood that requires regular maintenance, this latest technology is trouble-free. “It’s pretty heavy duty,” says the architect. “You could throw a baseball against and it wouldn’t dent.” Right: On-trend pieces, ranging from transitional to contemporary, furnish the great room with conviviality. But it’s the floor-to-ceiling relief wall, a silver alabaster shadowstone panel, that houses the fireplace from American Grill & Hearth, suspends the TV from Wicked Smart Homes, and ultimately steals the show.

Like many waterfront properties, an elevated or stilt structure is often required to protect homes and their residents from potential flooding. In this case, Sultana enacts a clever alternative for the bayfront home: “I put the staircase inside, so you enter on the ground floor, then climb up to the main living area.” His innovation resulted in an unexpected yet engaging design element. “I guess you could call it a staircase sculpture,” Sultana muses. T.J. Nutter, owner of Nutter Custom Construction, was also intimately involved with the project. He had unique insight into the clients’ mindset due to an interesting common denominator. “He is a homebuilder in another state who is experienced and astute when it comes to building and design,” says Nutter. “These clients are eclectic with very specific desires.” Like Sultana, Nutter has the knowhow and aptitude for “outside the box” thinking and was therefore able to meet his clients’ high standards. u Above: Unabashedly modern, the kitchen features decadent custom cabinetry from Main Street Kitchen & Bath and a cutting-edge clear glass tile backsplash from Design Works, grouted bright white for added pop. Professional-grade stainless Thermador appliances from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, utilitarian counter stools, and industrial clear pendants by Tech Lighting from Light Up Your Life enhance the contemporary aesthetic. Right: The dining room is flooded with natural daylight, but when night falls, the smoky glass “Quinton” pendants by Tech Lighting from Light Up Your LIfe turn on the drama. A generous helping of metal in the geometric dining table, etched sideboard, and Midcentury-inspired brass chairs enhance the contemporary character of the space. 194

Above: Understated yet excitingly urban, the master bath features a chunky oval acrylic freestanding tub and a striking focal wall where decorative porcelain tiles from Design Works by Atlas Concorde create a jaw-dropping “slab” of white and gray with a hint of honey. Right: The master bedroom juxtaposes soft and fluffy with sleek and solid. Dark espresso wood supplied by the owner becomes a show-stopping headboard wall. The same rich tone is duplicated in the sophisticated, channel-tufted leather benches at the foot of a chic, mirrored canopy bed. Minka Aire’s oversized brushed nickel fan makes an encore appearance on the ceiling, effecting modern poetry in motion.

With the ingenious three-story structure in place, it was DSDG Architects’ in-house designer April Balliette’s turn to show off her skills. “My job is to bring the clients’ vision to life. I execute what they see in their mind’s eye,” says Balliette of her role. She began by selecting a porcelain tile from Design Works for the flooring that emulates natural wood, thus creating a warming effect. By using that same material on both living levels, Balliette achieves a sense of continuity between areas of the home. She took design cues from Sultana’s architecture. “The clean lines of the exterior dictated the cabinetry and countertops within, which have a sharp and linear quality about them,” explains Balliette. To add impact, she also created fun and textural focal walls in the more prominent spaces. u
198
homeanddesign.net
Nutter reflects on the finished product with praise for his colleagues and how invaluable it is to be a part of this team. “DSDG’s design and finish selections are timeless and embody the sheer elegance of a modern waterfront home.” Simply put, the collective inventiveness amounted to a home far greater than the sum of its parts. n
Left: Horizontal and vertical lines converge on the expansive open-air balcony. Custom-stained cypress installed tongue-and-groove style encompasses the ceiling. A set of inviting, boxy chaise lounges, including one that gently swings, and a slim aluminum railing gives way to a breathtaking water view.

The rear exterior, boasting three proportioned stories of concrete, glass, and aluminum, could easily pass for a boutique hotel in the hip section of a bustling city. Instead, this trend-setter rests alongside a tranquil canal in what Sultana calls “an up-andcoming neighborhood on the bayou.” It’s just the kind of individuality the forward-thinking owners and creators had in mind.

TRINITY CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN Trinity Construction & Design Owner Michael Cocozza’s favorite aspect of this recent remodel is definitely its staircase. The unique and eye-catching design was finalized after drawing several mock-ups and construction methods played an integral role in the final design. “It was a part of the project that allowed me to get my hands dirty, and I really enjoyed collaborating with the entire team to make it come to life,” says Cocozza. His other favorite aspect was the guest suite’s bathroom, which has floor-toceiling tile in a concrete-like finish. A walnut vanity, similar to the walnut used on the stairs and the kitchen island, ties this space in with the rest of the home. “Walnut is, hands down, one of my favorite species of wood,” Cocozza continues, “It has so many beautiful characteristics to it.” Focusing on quality, relationships, communication, and transparency, the team at Trinity Construction & Design believes the home building and renovation process should be an enjoyable experience. DISTINCTIVE INTERIORS Located in Lakewood Ranch, the Monterey Model is one of Distinctive Interiors’ latest designs. The style inspiration is modern, casual, and coastal. Natural elements such as Capiz shell and driftwood are utilized in the lighting and furnishings to reinforce the organic, coastal aesthetic. Soft neutrals are accentuated with pops of green and blue, inspired by pieces of sea glass you could find on the beach. The living room is anchored by a driftwood coffee table. Soft aqua and blue hues make up the accent pillows and area rug. An inviting oversized sectional surrounds the living space and maximizes seating. “We decided to utilize a soft neutral palette and provide color throughout the home in our selections of accessories, artwork, and fabrics,” says Stephanie Nolan, owner of Distinctive Interiors. A natural Capiz shell chandelier is the focal point of the dining room. Upholstered dining chairs, in a neutral fabric, provide seating around a natural wood-and-chrome dining table. An aqua rug coordinates with colored sea glass place settings. A gleaming white kitchen, with oversized subway tile and quartz countertops, has touches of polished nickel and stainless steel. The oversized window’s aqua and gray geometric Roman shades provide plenty of daylight for the cheerful space. NWC CONSTRUCTION Situated on the corner of a waterfront street in the coveted neighborhood of Sarasota’s Bird Key, the original home had strong bones and great sight lines. The owner sought to reimagine the interiors in a more contemporary style, complimenting the owner’s eclectic art collection. The spaces are opened inward toward each other, and outwards towards the dramatic views. Large format, concrete-look porcelain tiles blend them together. A tall walnut-stained front door welcomes guests into the living room, which has a broad custom concrete fireplace surround with tapering edges. A soaring walnut paneled over-mantle complements the ceiling detail. A broad threshold overlooks the dining area, with the family room just beyond. A large, open kitchen takes center stage, with dramatic walnut and lacquer finishes. An elegant stairway, with a center stringer and wood block treads, leads to the upstairs guest suites. Beside the family room, a custom concrete bar top, with waterfall and tapering details, provides ample space for relaxation and play. TALON HOME BUILDERS There are a lot of moving parts to remediating a property after water damage occurs. The logistics are very different from new construction and having the right team of professionals is key to a positive experience. In addition to being a Certified General Contractor and Roofing Contractor, Talon Home Builders is also licensed in mold remediation and certified in water and fire damage. Following water damage to the master suite, we began this renovation by very carefully removing all the interior contents of the home to be safely stored during the construction phase. Once the space was cleared of furnishings, all of the damaged materials–baseboards, wood floors, drywall, cabinets, closet systems, countertops, and plumbing fixtures–were stripped away. The wood flooring and sub-floor were replaced, as was the drywall and custom baseboards. Once the repairs were complete, fresh paint was applied to both the walls and ceiling. The silver lining to this terrible situation was the home’s resultant updated foyer and staircase. An intricate, custom basketweave wood design and tile inlay creates a lattice-like pattern on the floor in this stunning foyer. The staircase’s original railing was removed so that the treads could be refinished to match the new wood flooring, and the existing tile risers were replaced with an updated subway-style glass tile design to match the updated fireplace. Talon Home Builders values building strong relationships with our customers. We love our industry and we feel honored to be providing our services to the Sarasota community. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your project with you, regardless of its size, complexity, or location.
