SHIBUI AT BAYSO
ANCIENT AESTHETICS MEETS MODERN DESIGN IN THE NEW BAYSIDE CONDO
In this great room, Lead Interior Designer Adrienne Deiparine from Studio G Home elevates the serene gray and soft white color scheme with accents that bring vitality to the space. Textures from nature, fabrics, and wood patterns are carefully chosen to preserve a clean, uncluttered aesthetic and evoke a sense of Shibui. Embroidered throw pillows showcase a yellow ochre hue that appears again in the coffee table accessories, harmonizing with the warm honey tone of the oak found on the dining table, kitchen cabinetry, and media focal wall.
EEmbracing the Japanese concept of Shibui, which celebrates beauty through subtlety, the Shibui At Home showroom in downtown Sarasota serves as a sanctuary of simple, unobtrusive beauty. Dedicated to the art of celebrating nature, this showroom offers bespoke furnishings, textiles, and accessories. Wabi-Sabi, a closely related concept, finds beauty in imperfection and impermanence. When these Bayso Condominium clients visited the Shibui At Home showroom, they were captivated by these aesthetic principles, inspiring the interior design of their condo.
Lead Interior Designer Adrienne Deiparine from Studio G Home skillfully crafts a condo design for this couple that blends ancient aesthetics with modern styling, emphasizing warmth and comfort. Deiparine’s expertise is particularly evident in her integration of Shibui and Wabi-Sabi philosophies into the sleek lines of the modern building, using nature, texture, and subtle asymmetries to create an interior of understated elegance.
Deiparine fashions a refined entrance niche featuring kudu horns that serve as intriguing elements and epitomize Wabi-Sabi by celebrating the charm of aged materials. Additionally, thoughtful asymmetry, a monochromatic scheme, and minimalistic design collectively reflect the elegant expression inherent in Shibui. The color scheme effortlessly extends into the great room, where black emerges as a dominant accent, infusing the neutral palette with depth and dynamism. This strategic use of color exemplifies the holistic excellence of Deiparine’s design. She repeats the use of oak wood throughout the condo, incorporating hints of yellow ochre amid various shades of charcoal gray. This aesthetic is further enhanced by carefully chosen accessories, art, and textures, including fur, fabric, and biophilic touches. “We realized our client’s vision by creating a calming atmosphere,” shares Deiparine. “The design is well-balanced and unobtrusive, featuring color where it should be and life where it is needed, all contributing to a personal oasis.” u
Entry: A custom-built floating credenza, painted in Agreeable Gray by SherwinWilliams, spans the niche. Atop this functional landing zone, kudu horns showcase their stunning undulating shapes, reflected in a strategically placed mirror to create an asymmetrical display. Below, a Tibetan lamb skin ottoman adds rich texture to the setting. Not only does the pendant serve as the striking black accent of the entry, but it also features an unusual design with gem-shaped lights arranged to emit light in 360 degrees.
Living Room: A slatted oak focal wall extends to the ceiling, accentuating the room’s height and introducing a prominent natural material. Deiparine thoughtfully pairs the client’s existing low-profile sofas with rustically textured tables in an ebony stain, resting on this multidimensional area rug with a combination of loop and cut loop pile textures. Additionally, two cylindrical chairs add versatile seating, perfect for the living room or as extra spots at the dining table.
As a savvy, experienced designer, Deiparine works on-site with the electrician to meticulously place this free-form chandelier in the living room so that it offers just the right feeling. A stunning piece of art graces the space in the adjacent dining room, instilling this corner with rich, warm hues. Deiparine softens these spaces with floor-to-ceiling sheers and uses bouclé on the dining chairs to add texture and complexity to their simple Shibui-like forms.
The design philosophies carry to the primary bedroom, where Deiparine expresses thematic hues featuring shades of gray with touches of tan, taupe, and soft white. Furthermore, the room is a rich tapestry of texture and movement. Deiparine points out, “The nightstands, with their distinct graining and heavy distressing, showcase the Wabi-Sabi philosophy by celebrating the beauty and rustic patina characteristics found in the natural world.” u
Kitchen: Deiparine introduces an enchanting layer of movement to the space by selecting a matte white porcelain tile backsplash with a delicate wave pattern. This choice contrasts the glossy white cabinetry and the reflective white Caesarstone countertops. The counter stools, upholstered in luxurious cream bouclé, add a robust textural element, while their satin black legs elegantly echo the other black accents throughout the space, creating a sophisticated interplay of color and texture.
Dining Room: Artwork by Kader Boly, a celebrated artist at the Studio G Home and the Shibui At Home showrooms, showcases a captivating fusion of human and animal forms set against a vibrant palette of earthy tones. Deiparine selects this table and chairs for their unique forms, citing that the negative space of the furnishings is just as important as the positive space when creating the composition here. Above, the chandelier, suggestive of a fish shape, subtly nods to the condo’s bay-side setting.
Deiparine introduces a broad array of textures in the primary bedroom, elevating the room’s monochromatic scheme with the rustic grain of the nightstands topped with mosaic-clad table lamps. Texture and movement come alive on the finely woven SDH Fine European Linens bedding and the embossed wallcovering from Arte International. This wallpaper will grant the viewer a unique radiant experience depending on how the light shines.
Aligning with Studio G Home’s approach to design, Deiparine flourishes and embraces the Shibui aesthetic that delights her personally while adding to it her own style. “At Studio G Home, our designs reflect our expertise, infused with our passion to provide a personalized and heartfelt experience,” says Deiparine. “Each space is crafted not only to be seen but felt, imbuing a serene spirit and ensuring a profound impact on all who enter.” n
Powder Bath: “We added the backlit mirror to introduce another layer of light. This layering approach allows for varied lighting options to suit different moods,” Deiparine explains. Natural oak extends into the powder bath, enhancing the sense of continuity alongside the same driftwood-tone porcelain tile Deiparine uses in the main living spaces. This tile lines the shower in the powder bath, carrying this gentle hue vertically for an immersive and tranquil ambiance.
