"Click Click and You're There!" ™ How I Developed This Concept

home with Eddie Jones and I was very happy What were the lessons that I've learned in this app research? Apps are very good if you've got a large company and can afford to develop something for $50,000-$100,000. The cheap ones may or may not work that well, but there's a very mobile marketing system, in my opinion. What's better than an app? I can share it with a client, I can share it with customers. For instance, say if you're a realtor, and you just sell a house, and you give your app to the client because they want to ... the sale is only the start of your relationship, it's not the end. You show them how to put it on their home screen and then you ask them, if you're happy with me would you mind sharing the app with your friends on Facebook with one touch of a button. You show them how. Click. You have now sent a preloaded message, "I've bought a
with your service." Simple message like that but it has gone to every friend and every family member who's on their Facebook. That is a priceless recommendation. It was done in a second. They didn't have to type a word because it is preloaded. The same thing could be done with Twitter. Some people who are in the Twittersphere and have a lot of followers, for them that's a big testimonial. Now the other thing, too, is on my app I have a section called Testimonials. The reason is, when people see Testimonials, they can click on it and they get to see videos of my clients actually giving a video testimonial for me. Very powerful. They have a little one or two line thing, "Yeah, he did a good job" but it's nowhere near as effective as a two or three minute video of them explaining what you did 10

Basically, and now if you have a takeout menu, they can click on it, order it, so simple. Order it on the way home from work. All they do is click on it, order. Then they pick it up. They're saving the money. They're saving time. They're saving a half hour to an hour by the

This vehicle seats seven. I don't have a family of seven. We once used it in 2 years. Fair, but it wasn't a factor. The fact that I'm 6 foot 4, I was comfortable to get in it and I could drive it. That was my selling factor that I didn't have to crawl into it. I could step into it

Anyways, I did the research and I had to go everywhere to find these things. If this would have been done in an hour, it would have been super easy. Super easy. It was a 4-week ordeal of searching online to find the stock and the features that I want. Make it easy and you got my sale. It was a done deal. Cash deal. Just find me the stock in the one that I wanted. That was it. Color, specifications, and the model, but I had to search the entire province to find one. They were very rare. There was a 6-month waiting list. In doing this situation, here's your add-on sales. I have a whole section that shows the accessories in use. I would have bought more accessories for this, but I didn't understand what they would do, so the dealership probably lost $8,000 for the accessory. I would have put a trailer hit on it immediately, but I didn't really know much
all that good stuff, but I wish I would have had it all done at the beginning. Now, if to have a food that specializes in takeout. Fast food. You definitely want to have an app like this here and be on one of the maps or apps, like what I put on there, because when people are hungry, they want to know what's beside them. I built an app that is flipped of what's near me. It says fast food. I press it. It goes through the maps of Google to find out what fast food is ... All of these things, Google invented these. I didn't. I just provide a link. If you type on fast food near me on Google, you'll get the same results as pressing that one button. I just like having one button instead of with my big fat fingers trying to figure out how to type on that little screen. One click and you're there. Click, click, and you're there. I don't have to

Now, with the remote control for the internet with your dot tel mobile marketing app,
If you have a bus bench ad, forget it. People aren't going to stop the car to write down your phone number and your website and all that or so in there. If you've got a nice, small little 2-digit thing, like 21.tel, that's easy. They can remember that and they can jot it down. You have something simple and easy to use. That's the number one key to this system. Have
you can also, if you want to send me an email, one click. You don't have to type all this information. It's one click, done. Easy. Over. What you can do is if your customer, if they want to talk to you, they click on it and they're connected by phone. Now the benefit is, too, is that you can have a different video for each section, not just one video. Now, compare this to a website. There's no way to get a website to look like anything by adding it to your home screen, just a bunch of letters. It doesn't show up, but this shows up on your
Now the other thing that I have done is I've specialized in the mobile phone marketing. A couple years ago, mobile search overtook desktop search, which means there are more people searching on their mobile phones. They don't wait to go home. They're not using that to ... waiting to go home to go search. They'll just search on their smartphone. They do it everywhere, on the bus, when they're ... 22

I just make a quick link to it. That's all it is. Quick link to the search, not the stuff in there because people can choose what they want to have. Well ... There you go. Quick link. Tom MacDonald: Good morning, good morning to everybody out there listening at CKPM.FM 98.7. I'm really glad you joined us this morning. My name is Tom MacDonald, and I am the host of The Extreme Business Show here on this great radio station right here in the tri-cities. We're the tri-cities new local, independent radio station, so listen in. If you haven't listened in to the rest of the show, or the rest of the program, all day listen. There's some great music, some great content, and we got real estate, we got political turmoil being interviewed and discussed. It's really awesome stuff that we've got, but on this particular show we don't touch political, we don't touch health, we just strictly stay with business. Because a lot of you are in business, and our goal here on this show is to bring you to extreme profits, give you the lifestyle that you're looking for in your particular company, helping y o u a t t a i n p r o f i t a b i l i t y, success and lifestyle. Listen in, because we've got some great,
As a matter of fact in this particular segment we've got an innovator. We've got people who are professionals, and they've been coming' along, and telling' you how to do things like accounting, buying and selling businesses, how to do LinkedIn et cetera, but I've got an innovator in the studio with me right now. It's a friend of mine. His name is Darrel Backen, and he's from Backen Media. Now what Darrel has done is he's revolutionized, and I don't use that term light, but he's revolutionized the way digital media marketing has occurred. He's taking that out to small businesses right here in the tri-cities, because everybody who's famous has to start somewhere, and he's starting right here in the tri-cities. This is where he's delivering this product and service, and he's doing a fabulous job of it. We're going to find out all of his secrets today, or as much as we can in 22 minutes, to see what the trends are, where things are going, and how things are getting done online and what's changing. Darrell, I'd like to welcome you to the show. Good morning. How ya doing?
78 77
Darrell Backen:
Good morning, Tom.
Tom MacDonald: Hey, great. I wanted to ... Now I want to set the table for our guests ... for our listeners h e r e . Pe o p l e a r e o n l i n e searching. Most searches, most purchases are now taking place online. As a matter of fact if you go to a store like a Best Buy oftentimes people are shopping online, and they'll either buy it at Best Buy, or they'll just look at it at Best Buy, and go ahead and buy it online. Online marketing, and online purchases are becoming a huge, huge part of our purchasing habits if you will. Not only that, but mobile marketing is becoming a really great thing. Now you've found that there was some holes, and you decided to fill them. You found that there some needs out there for small businesses that weren't getting filled, and you just came up with a product, or unique way of delivering digital online marketing services. Tell me about that, so we can get into it on our next segment, and see what the details are.
80 79
Darrell Backen:
Yes, Tom. My problem was that I published Home & Leisure magazine, and I was ... Didn't feel good having truckloads of magazines that went to recycling every month. Print is on it's way down, and I wanted to figure out ... A new wave is going to be digital information ...
Darrell Backen:
There are new technologies that were available that weren't fully utilized, so I researched and developed those, and basically preceded with it.
Tom MacDonald: You were a big publisher on the print side?
Darrell Backen:
I was publishing Home & Leisure magazine. I stopped the printing, and I researched, and developed methods that would be effective online for mobile devices.
Tom MacDonald: Where was the need for people? What was missing that you had to come up with this innovation?
82 81
Tom MacDonald: Now I've used it. I know that I have, so I've had personal experience in this. It's ... Wow. Over $120,000 in added revenue to my telecom business, and about oh I'd say $2,000, $3,000 a month in recurring MRR. It's been ... Monthly recurring revenue for those who haven't heard about MRR before. This is all a result of a different way of marketing. See Google's got us in a place where they're starting to control more, and more of the online marketing that's going on, and the message that's going on. You've decided to play ball, if I can say that, with Google. Not that you're a certified Google person, but you know that that's where the market is, and where it's going. You developed techniques and innovations that will allow you to bring a product, and a service to a client that will increase their visibility with Google, and get them way more from their websites.
We're going to come back in a minute, because you're ... One of the things you said to me off-air is, "Websites are dying." If you think you're website's where it's all at then you've got some major education coming your way on the next segment. That is not where you're going to get found is on your website, and it's not necessarily where customers, or consumers really want to go. I'll tell you why when we get back right after these messages with Darrell Backen. You're listening to The Extreme Business Show on CKPM.FM. Stay tuned.
84 83
We're back. Thanks for joining us here on CKPM.FM. You're listening to The Extreme Business Show. My name is Tom MacDonald. I'm really pleased to be the host of this show here on CKPM.FM. It's a local tri-cities new, independent radio station. Listen in all day long if you can. There's some great music, and some great content. I've got in the studio with an innovator in digital media marketing. His name is Darrell Backen. Welcome to the show, Darrell.
Darrell Backen:
Hi, Tom.
Tom MacDonald: How ya doin' today?
Darrell Backen:
Good, good.
Tom MacDonald: Hey, so ... I know I've made over $100,000 with your service. I know I have, and I'm making $2,000 a month in recurring revenue as well. Sales and then monthly recurring revenue in the telecon business. It was simple how ya did it with me. You s a i d t o m e , " To m . Yo u r website's cool, but it's dying. Yo u ' v e g o t t o g e t i n t o educational marketing. You've got to get into mobile app marketing. You've got to get a different platform. You've got to be found." There's a host of things you brought in for me. Tell us about that, because I'm sure our listeners out there are going, "I'd like to make $100,000 in sales off of Yo u Tu b e , a n d d i g i t a l marketing." How are you doing that? What are some of the cool things you're bringing to the marketplace here?
86 85
Darrell Backen:
Basically what I came down to was the basic, simple way that Google works. Google answers the questions the way the people ask them. I designed the video, so that when they ask a question your video pops up and answers them. That's been one of the major successes that you had was that with Samsung when they were looking for parts, or pieces, or how it works we actually developed an app for how to use Samsung business phone systems. We [developed 00:06:56] an app for that, so if ... All is in an integrated digital marketing system.
Tom MacDonald: You're getting ... You got me into the educational side of, or dimension of marketing. Instead of saying, "Our product's cheaper, or faster, or better, or quicker, or why you need to buy from me, or why I need to be your vendor of choice," you said, "Forget that. That's not what people want. They don't want to hear about how good you are. They want to know what you can do for them, and how they can learn. A lot of them want to just learn about what it is. They have to become an expert ... Instant expert on whatever it is they're doing," and you're suggesting do that.
88 87
Darrell Backen:
Yeah. The problem with most businesses now is that their products are extremely complex. It's not an easy buying decision, because it's not choosing the color, it's not choosing what this ... It is now ... I know with your telephone systems, with the educational video marketing system we set up there, people have phoned you up, and what did they tell you? That ...
Tom MacDonald: They saw me.
Darrell Backen:
Tom MacDonald: Yeah. It's what I liked about your system is that it built credibility for ... People buy from people. I get that. People buy from people. They don't buy from companies. They buy from people the experience they get. Even if it's Starbucks, or MacDonald's it's all about the experience. What you did is you introduced me onto YouTube, so that people got to know, like, and trust me. "I've seen your videos. It's like I know you already." Of course they're going to be more comfortable with buying from me, or listening to me.
They saw you, and they wanted to order a 7200, which was incredible.
90 89
Darrell Backen:
There's a basic truth with all things. No matter who the person is they could be the president of a multi-million dollar company, they don't want to ask what they consider the stupid questions. If you answer those questions, and they save face ... They are more interested in saving face than saving dollars sometimes. Because saving face when they ... Especially some of the senior executives they're not at the highest level of digital knowledge, and they don't feel like, "I don't know what that means, and stuff like that," but when answer all their questions it's good. They're brought up to date, they're comfortable, and it's done, and they feel like they know you, they like you, they trust you.
Tom MacDonald: What you're saying is that a lot of background information where people bring themselves up to speed, or ramp up educational-wise happens where it's just them watching, or reading whether ... As opposed to talking to somebody, which can lead to like you say, "A disparity of knowledge ... Knowledge gaps," and then they just don't want to get into going, "I didn't know that. I didn't know this. I didn't know that." They get to learn all this stuff on videos. Why are videos more important than lots, and lots of copy on your website?
Darrell Backen:
The number one reason: videos are important. They will never be subject to the hummingbirds, and all these cute little names, because Google owns YouTube. They paid five billion dollars for it.
92 91
Tom MacDonald: W h e n y o u ' r e s a y i n g hummingbirds ... Google has these algorithms on search engine ...
Darrell Backen:
Right.
Tom MacDonald: ... Right? They have all these cute names, and the latest one is hummingbird, and every time they come up with a new algorithm all these marketers out there that have been clever to help get your website up to a high ranking, they all disappear, they all go to the bottom of the page.
Darrell Backen:
People are ...
Tom MacDonald: Page 20.
Darrell Backen:
There's a black hat, and white hat, and some of these people have heard of these. If you follow the Google rules you'll be okay, and use Google tools, then you'll be super-okay. Because the thing is that if you're doing what they want you to do ... Now they want you to successfully bring people to YouTube, because the first three seconds is a Google ad. Of course that's the number one way they get paid.
Tom MacDonald: O f c o u r s e . O b v i o u s l y educational marketing, getting videos. Is mobile marketing becoming a growing trend, and how do you deal with that? What have your ... How ... What's ... Because I know that's the cornerstone of your digital marketing is your mobile app.
94 93
Darrell Backen:
That is the ... Here's the thing is that this year mobile searches will overtake PC searches like desktop searches. People are on the phone, they're on the bus, they're not driving. The passenger is looking, and shopping while they are mobile, and they're not going to go home, or to the office, and turn on the desktop to look for something. They want it now. People have ... There's a major change in people's time-frame. They want everything instantly.
Tom MacDonald: I know. I find too that on smart-phones, which a lot of people have these days, it's got everything built in. You can actually play a video, and listen to the sound, whereas a lot of desktop computers still don't have media cards, or they don't ... They have speakers. People want to listen to them personally. Smart-phones are a great way to go, you're saying more, and more people are starting to market through smart-phones.
Darrell Backen:
People are making buying decisions, because of what they found in five minutes while they're mobile, and traveling on their smartphones.
96 95
Tom MacDonald: If you want to find out how to make $100,000, or more like I did using Darrell Backen's digital media marketing innovation, and it is an innovation. Yes, he hasn't invented fire, or the wheel, but he's taken services that exist today, and he's morphed them, and combined them into something unique that I haven't seen anybody else do. It's working. It's working bigt i m e . Yo u ' v e g o t l o t s o f customers now that you're using digital marketing.
Darrell Backen:
I work around the world now, and actually the benefit of video brochure marketing I can place around the world. I have companies that are placing in Europe, Asia, South America with the videos. There's no way in the world that they would get somebody from Argentina find their website. No way.
Tom MacDonald: Darrell, we got a couple of minutes left before we go to the next segment. On the next segment I want to talk about the video marketing, and why you don't have to fear video marketing, you don't necessarily have to being front of a camera to get this done. Darrell has a unique way, again very innovative, way of getting video marketing, and all the search criteria that brings you to the top of Google ranking in a very simple effective way that doesn't has to put you in front of a TV screen, and spend 1000's of dollars in production costs. He's figured that out, and we're going to come back, and talk about that. Before we do you've got an offer. I want to ask every business leader that comes in here, "What can you do for my guests? What can you do for my listeners as a guest for your product or service?"
98 97
Darrell Backen:
What I'm offering to all of your listeners is if anybody wants to have a digital review of what they're missing with their digital marketing systems I'll do it for free. I'll assess everything, their complete digital footprint, and I'll show you what's missing, and where they're losing money.
Tom MacDonald: O h , t h a t ' s p r e t t y g o o d . Because ...
Tom MacDonald: I'm in the telecon business, so I'm in high-tech. I don't even know how to do that. I don't ... I can't imagine how anyone else who's running an automotive shop, or a manufacturing business has the first clue about how to start analyzing their digital, or their online presence, and see how successful it is. You're going to do this for them for free?
Darrell Backen: Darrell Backen:
I'll do it for free.
Nobody can be an expert in everything. I have customers, and clients make multi-million dollars a year, but their specialists in that area they don't know about that ... You know what? The reason I went on this five-year search ... Research and development is I didn't know, and there was nobody to ask. There is no Google ...
Tom MacDonald: Help.
100 99
Darrell Backen:
... Users manual.
Tom MacDonald: (laughs)
Darrell Backen:
(laughs) There isn't one. I wish there was, but there isn't.
Tom MacDonald: Probably more. We'll be right back, and you don't have to listen to the 10,000 hours. I can promise you that. Because you can just listen to the next 10 minutes, and you're going to get some great information. We'll be right back after these messages.
Tom MacDonald: I can attest, because I've you for close to five years maybe more, and you have spent thousands of hours. Boy, if you have ever read that Outliers book by Malcolm Gladwell, they say to become very, very proficient in anything it's 10,000 hours. Boy, I got a guy here that's probably put 10,000 hours in.
Darrell Backen:
Probably more. (laughs)
102 101
Welcome back. You're listening to The Extreme Business Show with Tom MacDonald. I'm really glad you've joined us on this beautiful Saturday morning, here in our beautiful British Columbia, and a great country. I am so thankful I am in business here, and I'm so thankful I've got people like Darrell Backen on my team to help me with my business. A lot of the guests that I interview here I know them, I know them fairly well. I don't use all their services, so it's not people that I use services on that I bring on, and try to sell their products or services. It's just that I happen to know Darrell, and this happened to be pretty successful, and as an innovator I wanted our listeners to hear about what you're doing.
On a previous segment that we talked about Darrell, which is a digital marketing presence, and online presence, which you've innovated some great ideas, some great things that you're putting out to people. I know it's made me over $100,000. One of the things you talked about is how important is to educationally market to your client base through video marketing, through online video marketing. A lot of people freeze about that don't they? They have a problem with going, "I don't want to be online, and I don't want to pay $10,000 to have a television production kind of video." Which is true? It can cost $5,000, $10,000 ... I've got friends who've spent 5,000 bucks easy on videos. That's not the direction you're going. Tell us about that.
104 103
Darrell Backen:
No. Then ... The first thing is that most people do not want to be on camera, on video. They freaked. I don't personally like that myself. What I developed the systems is that what's really important is what you're company does, and what you can do for them, and you can show samples. You can show your equipment in motion, and you can talk about it. People will enjoy talking about what they do, as they can do a voice over, showing their equipment, or what they do in action. That's far more important, and it does not be a big production ... There's no ... There is no huge ... If you do a proper video thing: you've got four or five people, and makeup and stuff, and you're talking thousands of dollars per minute. My system doesn't work like that. It's simple, easy to use. It can all be done with an iPhone.
Tom MacDonald: Perfect. This is what we're ... Small businesses are looking for this, because they can't afford $5,000, $10,000 in postproduction costs to put a three minute video clip up there unless there Nike, or they're some huge company. They can do that. Ford can do it, Audi can do it, BMW can do it. We can't do that, so you've got a solution for that.
106 105
Darrell Backen:
The only time that I would ... What I usually do with the people ... They are the expert in their industry. They give me 10 questions that are commonly asked them by their customers. Everyone has the 20 question, 10 questions. They simply give me the questions, I interview them similar to what you're interviewing me, and they naturally talk about it, because they're the expert in it, but they're not on camera. They're showing whatever it is they do online, because I take screenshots, and I make it. It's a very educational three to five minutes. People understand what their benefit is, and what they can do for it.
Darrell Backen:
Yeah. I use a little bit of the Hollywood ... I use specialized Mac equipment, and specialized programs, and the idea I got it off of was E n t e r t a i n m e n t To n i g h t actually. (laughs) Because they always have clips of some movie star they've had, and it zooms in on 'em, and stuff like that. I said, "How do they do that?" I researched and developed my method of doing that myself.
Tom MacDonald: Cheap ...
Darrell Backen:
Very.
Tom MacDonald: Your videos ... It's a video of a still, which is very clever, but it's not a still. It actually moves. You've got the still moving.
108 107
Tom MacDonald: ... Effective, and available for all small business people. As a matter of fact if you call me, or just e-mail me extreme@tmsi.com. That's my c o m p a n y . Extreme@ckpmfm.com. That's extreme@ckpmfm.com. Tell me you're interested in Darrell's digital marketing online presence package, and the free analysis ... He'll do a free analysis for ya. He doesn't have to come to your office. He can just do it online. Talks to you online, looks at everything you've got, your online presence, your footprint online, tells you what you're doing good, and where you can improve. You don't have to use ... They don't have to use your service. You can just tell 'em where they're at, right?
Darrell Backen:
Tom MacDonald: That's awesome. The ... We talked about mobile messaging. You're using some interesting ... Are you still using .tel? Is that still one of your ...
Darrell Backen:
I still use .tel, and the benefit of the .tel is that it is the only domain name that transfers to an app. Most people don't realize that.
Tom MacDonald: Tell me more about .tel. Tell our listeners more about .tel. Everybody knows about .com, or .ca, or .org.
Darrell Backen:
It is simply a domain.
Tom MacDonald: It's .tel.
Right. It's ... There's no obligation. I'll tell 'em what they're missing.
110 109
Darrell Backen:
It's a domain name, but it is a specialized ... There is no website. Most people say, "There are no pictures in this." It's not ... I call it a remote control for the internet. It's an index, and remote control. Just like using your remote control.
Tom MacDonald: It goes on your smart-phone.
Darrell Backen:
It goes on your smart-phone, and you can have 50 to 100 connections that if they want to go to a specific site of your Twitter, your Facebook, all those other things, but most importantly you can set up your videos. If you've got your 20 questions answered, those questions can be put on your app, and they say this is your solution to this problem, and there's your one minute video. It creates like a remote control, so they can share with it. Now the biggest advantage of it is, is that you can send it out to your entire customer base. If you've got 10,000 people in your e-mail database that are customers, or potential customers, send them your app. What better method of having your marketing than your branded logo on their iPhone?
112 111
Tom MacDonald: That's a very good point, and it's instant access for them. Most people are going online ... Some people browse online, and spend a lot of time, but a lot of business people don't have a lot of time to browse. They just want the information quickly, fast, efficiently. Going to a website is a difficult way of doing that. You don't always get to the information you're looking for, but the app that you've designed will classify by headers almost ... It's almost like a search within the search that allows you to get to the very pertinent information that the company is offering. Like the video marketing, educational series, how-to, how to change the tire on your car, or how to do whatever, to how to tie your tie. Whatever the ... Your business might be doing.
Darrell Backen:
Here's the other thing too, is that built into the system, to find your company store ... First of all it phones you. Click on it, and it sends an e-mail instantly. When they're trying to find your store, and they're interested they can ...
Tom MacDonald: You can call from your app. That app does it...
Darrell Backen:
All from the app.
Tom MacDonald: ... It'll call right to the vendor.
114 113
Darrell Backen:
I use it all the time. You can click on it for the map. It'll give you from wherever you are, with the GPS in your mobile phone, turn by turn directions that goes through your overhead voice ... Your hands-free device. It connects with your hands-free device, and gives you turn-by-turn directions. Just like you had a GPS mounted on your window.
Tom MacDonald: That makes it pretty easy then. If I've got a ... I'm a vendor. I'm selling ... I'm a butcher shop, or I'm a grocery store, or I'm a restaurant, and I want to get found. I just put the app for that restaurant on there, and I can get the menus, specials for the day, the menu up on this thing very s i m p l y. I c a n c a l l t h e restaurant very quickly, I can go to their website, or book a reservation on their e-mail, and it's all one button away. It's like a remote control like you said.
Darrell Backen:
Exactly. The thing is too if you're at a certain place, and even if you know where a store is, if you're in a different section of town you don't necessarily know what roads, and what bridges is the fastest w a y. I t a u t o m a t i c a l l y computes it for you. You don't have to look at your screen, which is by the way illegal. You can't look at your screen and drive, because that's considered not the proper way to use a hand-held, but if you've got it, and it's telling you overhead on the hands-fee device that's legal.
Tom MacDonald: Yeah. Turn left over this cliff in 200 meters. Run this red light in 50 meters.
Darrell Backen:
(laughs) That's not exactly it, but ...
116 115
Tom MacDonald: Stay away from that cop on the left hand side in 10 meters. No, that's pretty cool. We're going to be back after this to wrap up. If you're interested in what Darrell has to do, and if you're interested in his offer, which is to give you a free analysis of your online presence, and see what he can do for ya like what he did for me. I'm sure there's some other testimonials out there as well.
Darrell Backen:
Oh, yeah.
Tom MacDonald: We should probably get your website out. Where can people go if they ... Again they want to browse, they want to research and educate themselves, so they don't sound like an idiot when they call ya. What's ... Where can they go?
Darrell Backen:
Backen media: backenmedia.com.
Tom MacDonald: Then if they go on there they'll have ...
Darrell Backen:
There's examples.
Tom MacDonald: Can they download an app? Just ... I'm just curious.
Darrell Backen:
Yes, they could.
Tom MacDonald: They could.
Darrell Backen:
They can download digital samples, apps. I have all those on my website.
118 117
Tom MacDonald: Cool. We've got a few seconds left. Tell 'em about mine. I'm in the business telephone i n d u s t r y, r i g h t ? B u s i n e s s t e l e p h o n e s y s t e m s . Yo u optimized me for different cities geographically. Tell 'em about that. How that worked so well!
Tom MacDonald: You type in that business phone systems Burnaby, or Vancouver, or business phone systems Coquitlam, and all ... My company will dominate thanks to you.
Darrell Backen:
Tom MacDonald: One of the reasons is, because the videos ... It's a clip, it's a thumbnail, which it uses four, or five more lines than a regular search does.
I know that you are the local Samsung dealer, is the number one placement in every city in the lower mainland. The reason that you've gotten business from these people, from people who are potential clients, they found you online, and in cities you're not even in like North Shore, Abbotsford ... I've developed all these, so that people who need a business phone system you're ... You can go from Hope to Whistler ...
Darrell Backen:
Darrell Backen:
Right.
Right.
Tom MacDonald: Because of that ... Because it uses more it throws the completion off ...
Darrell Backen:
Right.
120 119
Tom MacDonald: ... The page to page 2. That's very interesting. We'll be right back for the wrap with Darrell Backen from Backen Media. You're listening to CKPM.FM. Join me for the wrap up.
We're back with the wrap up. Thanks for joining us here on CKPM.FM. My name is Tom MacDonald. You're listening to the tri-cities new local, independent radio station CKPM.FM 98.7. Make sure you dial in throughout the day. There's some great content, great music. Ben puts together an awesome musical director program that he's doing with all of the great tunes here. The Extreme Business Show talks about business, bringing you to the next level. Let's get your business up, hyper, successful, so you're not working seven days a week, 12 hours a day like a lot of people do. We got a lot of great things coming down the pipe.
Right now we're talking with a business innovator in digital marketing online presence, Darrell Backen, from Backen Media. I can attest myself that he's created $100,000 plus in revenue for me in the last couple of years. All because of his online digital marketing, and it didn't cost me a lot of m o n e y. H i s p r i c e s a r e reasonable. As a matter of fact he'll do an analysis for free for ya. If ya just call me, or just e-mail me success ... Extreme@ckpmfm.com, extreme@ckpmfm.com. I'll forward that off to Darrell, and we'll get him helpin' ya out.
122 121
To wrap up ... Now Darrell, you were in the print media. You were successful as a publisher printing thousands, and thousands of pages of things. Getting them all out to people, circulating all that, but then you found a better way of doing it, and you developed this online presence. Give me a wrap up on this. Tell us how that works, so that anybody just tuning in late gets an idea, and then tell us about your offer please.
Darrell Backen:
The basic ... With the Home & Leisure magazine I was tired of having truckloads of the magazine going to recycling every month. Thinking of the green, and the environment I said, "There must be another way," so I took it upon myself to research and develop methods that could be done on the new wave of communication, which was mobile marketing. Everything I've developed is to be used on a mobile device. The people ... People live a mobile life. They are ... They're always ... Even when the kid is playing soccer, or something like that people are checking their mobile phones.
124 123
Tom MacDonald: Oh, yeah. Some of the top three take-aways if you haven't been listening, or even if you have; number one: websites are dying. Private websites are going away the way you think they are. Don't think that your website's going to save your company. It's not. It's not. You've got to get some more digital online presence, and you've got to use ... For now until there's another Google that comes along, whenever that is, you've got to use Google's products and services. If you want to get found, and you want to make some money online you better be using Google's search engine algorithms, which change all the time to keep people like website designers on their toes, or even just in the dust ... In the dust. Google wants to be ahead of websites. They want everything. YouTube. They own YouTube.
One of the other ... Number two: video marketing is critical. You've got to have video marketing in your portfolio, and Darrell has a way of doing it. It doesn't cost thousands of dollars, and doesn't have to have somebody, an actor, in front of the screen. You or anybody else. It costs a ton of money, or is tough to do, because you're not used to being in front of the camera. That's the second big take-away.
Your third one is mobile marketing. You've got an app that you've developed online for ... Is it for iPhone and Androids?
Darrell Backen:
The benefit of this app is that it is a web-link app, it is downloadable on any mobile device. Android, Blackberry, or any of the Apple products: iPhone, iPad, iPod, everything.
126 125
Tom MacDonald: It's called ... I think it's called device agnostic. I've been reading the white papers on this. It's device agnostic. Doesn't matter what platform it's on. It works.
Darrell Backen:
Darrell Backen:
Tom MacDonald: It was zero until you had me do YouTube marketing, and some educational stuff.
What I call it is multiplatform, multi-channel, multi-media. That's three ways you've got to cover. I equate it to a machine-gun. Every second, or third bullet misses, but there's enough to get the job done. You're not going to have everything you design appear on the first page at Google, or the second page, but if you produce enough, you'll get enough traction.
Tom MacDonald: T h i s t a k e s a c o n c e r t e d , consistent online, ongoing effort. You can't just do your website. Don't even go with ... Go with websites, but believe me that's not the way to go. Don't design a beautiful website.
Darrell Backen:
You can attest to it. When I first met you, you had no digital marketing except for your website, and what would you say your level of returns went up?
People weren't finding you, and booking online.
Tom MacDonald: Yeah, it changed all around. Completely around. You have to keep on it. It's something you just can't do once and forget it. That's why Darrell's here to help. Very reasonable cost. Darrell, what's the offer, and what's your e-mail ... Your website, so they can check ya out?
128 127
Darrell Backen:
My website is backenmedia.com. Backen ... My offer today is that any of the listeners can get a free digital analysis. I'll take a look at what they're ... What they have, and what they're missing. It's what you're missing that is valuable.
Tom MacDonald: Awesome. Hey, listen Darrell. Thank you so much. Can I have you on again in the future?
Tom MacDonald: Business innovator, Darrell Backen, from Backen Media. Check him out. You got to do this if ya haven't done it already. Ya got to get online, and ya got to get your presence going. Thanks for listening today to The Extreme B u s i n e s s S h o w w i t h To m MacDonald. I really am happy you joined us, and we'll see ya next week again. Good day, and make it a profitable day.
Darrell Backen: Darrell Backen:
Thanks, Tom.
Sure. That'd be great, Tom.

When I clicked that on Twitter or Facebook on the share button, it went to my entire social media, to my entire Twitter and Facebook accounts and that exact wording is what was there.

We know that because we've seen a lot of newspapers being shuttered in Chicago and New York and many, many other places, although other ones are still making a success out of it by being community. I would say this radio station's a good example of an old school or old technology medium surviving by becoming local and community based and local based as opposed to trying to be everything to everybody, and it's a successful story. You're doing the same thing, but online as well. You're taking businesses that want an online 152

Darrell Backen:
I don't really kick them off. What I do is I place well so that there's only twelve positions on the first page of Google usually. What I do is try to place twelve properly-placed positions that involve your company, so it's not just a website, but seven different methods of media.

Yes. What we have is a system that
has been developed, one of the customers that we did before was Samsung. You type in how to use business phones, not Samsung, just business phones, anywhere in the world, a series of videos pop up. What it is is that it's linked to a app that we built that answers the questions that people most often ask. If you look at a phone system, how do you put the Christmas greeting on? How do you transfer to another call? How do you put "We're on holidays for two weeks?"

More importantly, I'm going to tell you how it worked in my company. I'm going to give you examples right now of some real success off of Google searches. Let's start right away. 328
327
Another company, a retail organization I've got an insurance company in Fraser Valley. They called us off of the Google search, and didn't know us at all before that. Turned it into an 8,000-dollar sale right off the get-go, and about 400 dollars a month in revenue from them ongoing because of our FlexLines service that we sell. We've replaced Telus dial tones with our dial tones. They're very happy by the way. They save probably about the same amount of money that we're making, so if we're making about 350 dollars a month, they're saving about 350 dollars a month. That's about 4,000 dollars, a year that my company is pulling in. If you extrapolate that to 10 years, that's 40,000 dollars in the next 10 years because this dial tone will probably be with us for the 10 years. That's a good example of one where we initially 8,000 sale and 40,000 over the next 10 years.
down in Vancouver, called us up off our keyword search, which is I think was probably a hotel in Vancouver in this case. We sold them a phone system on a complete rental. We're probably pulling in about 500 dollars a month from this customer. If you look at that, that's about 6,000 dollars a year, or 60,000 dollars in the next 10 years, which will probably add 30,000 in 5 years for sure, easy. I got a towing company in North Vancouver, you probably know of this. Within a week we had a system in there, it was about 3,000 dollars sale and another 200 to 300 dollars a month coming in. Again, you're looking at times 12, 3,600 dollars, times 5, 15,000 dollars every 5 years, I'm getting from that one. I've got some that I can't even post because there's so much activity. A company in Richmond, a broadcasting company in Richmond.
330 329
I've got an old manufacturing company in Port Coquitlam here. They had an old telephone system that is out in business any more folks. They were looking for someone to help them get out of that, so they called us, so we got them being helped and saving a lot of money. We've got another company, there's a Port Coquitlam as well. They're spending more than an enormous amount of money with Telus I think it's like 500 or 600 dollars. They were on contract, we got them out of the contract with Telus and now they're well on there way to being able to save probably about 300 to 400 dollars
All these are real, all these have all transpired in the last probably 8 months after 4 years of efforts. The last 8 months have yielded the most effective campaign I have ever seen. It's taken my FlexLines business which is the ability to sell dial tones and replace Telus from zero over 100,000 dollars a year in less than 8 months already. Very successful. It wasn't easy in the beginning, but I can definitely assure you now, that it's become a lot easier.
