HOME IMPROVEMENT EXPERT The speaker at the Fall Home Show, Paul F. Ryan, will hold seminars on remodeling the kitchen, the bathroom and construction 101. All seminars are a chance for some expert advice for consumers and DIYers. Ryan is a nationally recognized home improvement expert. Known as the “kitchen magician,” his seminars feature cost-effective kitchen improvements that will bring years of enjoyment and a nice payday when it comes time to sell. Ryan has remodeled hundreds of kitchens through his work as television show host on both the DIY and TLC cable networks, and off-camera as a licensed building contractor in the Twin Cities. Home show goers may recognize Ryan from his stints hosting the national cable show “Kitchen
Renovations” and “Weekend Handyman” as well as other DIY shows. The Fall Home Show will offer the chance for DIYers to attend his seminars and interact with the home improvement specialist. “I am going to show some techniques that people like to know when taking on a project. It’ll be good info for folks,” he says. “The kitchen is starting to be more of a focal point of the home. They’re bigger, more open. People meet in the kitchen, eat there and spend time together more than they used to,” says Ryan, citing the transition from dining-room eating to the kitchen being the new hot spot. Ryan says big, open kitchens seem to be the trend, with large islands that are functional for meals and gathering.
Paul Ryan to bring advice, tips to DIYers His best advice to consumers is to plan big and let your budget bring you back. Once the budget comes in, people can decide what is important. For example, some people that are really into cooking may choose to spend more on appliances and less on other remodeling changes. A big mistake Ryan sees people make is not planning ahead about what they will do in the interim while their project is in progress. He advises knowing every step of the project to avoid headaches. An example is realizing you don’t have the proper equipment to get a bathroom up and running right away after you’ve torn it out to remodel and it’s the only one in the house.

Although still a contractor, Ryan gets the chance to do what he love the most at events like the Fall Home Show: help others learn how to remodel and do it themselves. “I really enjoy putting on seminars. In seminars, you get that “ah-ha moment” with some people. It’s really fun to give people empowerment to go out and do a project themselves, but also inform them when itês time to call in the pros,” he said. His favorite part of the teaching process? Questions. Ryan always saves extra time at the end of seminars for people to ask questions, and through this, he gets to help people achieve even more “ah-ha moments.”

REMODELING YOUR HOME – You’ve decided you want to upgrade and remodel your home. Now what? From budgeting to colors to trying to find a way to work with some of the things you already have, the amount of considerations can be overwhelming. “In general, deciding to remodel is a big decision. Be ready for your life to be a little inconvenienced for a while. Keep in mind how wonderful the end product will be and how much it will improve your daily life! Enjoy the decisions and make the time to give the project your attention,” says HBA of F-M Remodelers Council Chair Ursula Hegvik, of Smart Spaces in Fargo. Hegvik and other local experts have some tricks and tips to help you get going on the process: Carefully plan and budget “Understanding your motivation is a key component in planning,” says
Gina Schumacher of Luxury Bath in Fargo. Schumacher explains that one major consideration is asking, who are you doing the remodel for? If the project is being done because you’ll be selling your house soon, then you can have a lower budget and should focus on more neutral choices. If you are remodeling so you can enjoy the outcome for years to come, then be patient and make choices that you know you will enjoy for years. “We’ve worked with many home owners who regret not spending a little extra to get what they really wanted. Clearly going over the job details before entering a contract is key so both parties have the same expectations. Furthermore, having a clear budget and discussing positive or negative impacts to that budget is important,” advises Schumacher. Henry Holtgard, Budget Blinds, urges remodelers to consider the
outcome they are setting out to accomplish. He said with window treatments, clients should consider fashion and function. The functionality of blinds lies in blocking light, drafts and more. Window coverings have a wide price range. Price shouldn’t be your only concern but it certainly is a major one. If you’re going to be doing several windows and your chosen style includes blinds layered with valances and drapes, you’re going to make a significant cash outlay. Ask questions and do your research “Construction jargon can come pretty fast and furious. Just as you would ask your doctor to explain medicines, procedures and options, so should you with building and remodeling. It’s your house - you get to live with it. Make sure it’s what you want!” encourages Hegvik.
tips and tricks from local experts
Remember to research products and companies and ask lots of questions. Schumacher suggests asking for references and before-andafter photos of a company’s similar projects. She also encourages people to ask a company what happens if something goes wrong.
Stay organized
“Start a binder, packet, folder… something to keep a master list of things throughout the project,” advises Hegvik. She explains the smoothest projects happen when everyone has a copy of contracts, plans and additions. No one is left in the dark, and there’s no “Every company runs into a job confusion in the end. Having pictures of that is a challenge and doesn’t go as your ideal outcome is also helpful. If you see something you like in a magazine, expected. Any company can take include those photos and ideas in your care of you when things are going binder. Being organized enables good right but a great company is one who communication between client and the is there with you when things aren’t company. going well. I go to many people’s “Understanding your motivation, homes every year and often hear doing the research and communicating nightmare stories about other effectively builds trust, allowing you to projects. Unfortunately, many of those move forward with confidence and situations could have been prevented excitement in your remodel project,” with research,” Schumacher says. says Schumacher.

Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation turned 20 years old this year! Visit the Home Builders Association of FM’s booth number, L320, at the Fall Home Show for celebratory M&Ms in HBC’s trademark blue and yellow colors. While you’re there, get some additional information on the Foundation’s programs and events including scholarships, the Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades, Fish Fry, Charity Ride and more! Home Builders Care Foundation serves as an outlet for the HBA of F-M’s members to give back to a community that has supported them throughout the years. Its focus is to support skill training by awarding scholarships to local students interested in the construction trades and working on housing-related projects in the area. One of Home Builders Care Foundation's biggest projects to date is the RENEW House. Home Builders Care Foundation purchased a 100-year-old home in 2007 and collaborated with the Remodelers Council of the Home Builders Association to remodel and update the home. The project helped revitalize a neighborhood and the house was sold to an income-eligible family. RENEW stands for Restoring Existing Neighborhoods for Everyone’s Wellbeing. Last year, the Foundation, the HBA and its Remodelers Council wrapped up the Home Builders Care Build for Habitat, funding a Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity home for a single mother and her two children. The HBA, HBC and Council were able to coordinate the construction of a garage in addition to the house build; Association members
donated all the materials and labor to make it happen. 2013 HBC President Chad Maloy, Gate City Bank, says, “It is truly incredible to have such an overwhelming amount of support from the great members of the HBA of F-M. Due to that generosity, we will be able to support another family in achieving the dream of homeownership, as we have funds left over from that build to go toward a future Habitat for Humanity project. We look forward to partnering with this great organization again.” Each fall, Home Builders Care Foundation awards scholarships to students studying construction at Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Minnesota State University Moorhead, North Dakota State College of Science and North Dakota State University. Scholarships are also awarded to area high school students who plan on attending M State or NDSCS and studying a constructionrelated field. Scholarship applications are available at www.hbcfm.com and are due Oct. 4. Connect with Home Builders Care on Facebook at www.facebook.com/HomeBuildersCare
In the past 20 years, Home Builders Care Foundation has: • Awarded $157,688 in scholarship dollars • Supported 192 students through scholarships • Made donations to area organizations totaling $203,662 • Given $646,106 to support a variety of housing-related projects

See the list at the right for professionals in the F-M area with home building designations through NAHB and/or NDAB. If applicable, these designations are included with the company’s Fall Home Show exhibitor listing in the center spread.

#HomeSweetHomeShow 11 Remodelers Council Members
Remodelers Council helps plan Fall Home Show, lends efforts to charitable projects The Remodelers Council is a committee of the Home Builders Association of F-M that deals with issues affecting the remodeling segment of the building industry. The Council was formed in 1990 and assists in planning and coordinating the Fall Home Show. Council members regularly lend their efforts to charitable projects and have built handicap-accessible ramps for those in need. They also built bunk beds for the Gladys Ray Shelter. Last summer, the Council, along with the HBA of F-M and the Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation, sponsored a Habitat for Humanity home in Fargo for a single mother and her two children. The Council’s other major project was the RENEW (Restoring Existing Neighborhoods for Everyone’s Wellbeing) Home, a 100-year-old home that was renovated and sold to an income-eligible family. The Council teamed up with HBC and the HBA of FM membership to remodel the home in south Fargo.
