Remodelers Council wheelchair accessibility ramps help The words of a volunteer say it all: “There is no better feeling than working together as a team to assist someone in need. The look we get, and appreciation expressed by those we help, is priceless,” says Terry Lipp, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Showroom. Lipp is a past Home Builders Association of F-M Remodelers Council chair and regularly volunteers to help build wheelchair accessibility ramps for area residents. “Giving back to the community is personally rewarding and to do this with members of the Council makes it even more special,” he says. “The value we bring by enhancing a person’s quality of life and the fact that they are able to stay in their home is extremely gratifying. What other choice would these people have? It is great to know that we do make a difference.” Here are three examples of Remodelers Council reaching out to help those in need:

ROBERT GARZA’S STORY Last summer, the HBA of F-M’s Remodelers Council built a wheelchair accessibility ramp for Robert Garza of Moorhead. Garza has suffered from kidney disease all his life and, in the last few years, was diagnosed with peripheral artery disease (P.A.D.), a circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs. Garza has had one leg amputated and now has problems with the other leg resulting from P.A.D. Doctoring at Fargo’s V.A. Hospital, Garza is wheelchair-bound and lives with his longtime girlfriend, Dorene Neeland. “This ramp helps a lot because I was carrying that heavy wheelchair from the car, up the stairs and into the house,” she says. “Then I was helping him climb up and down the stairs on his visits home from the hospital, too.”

Robert Garza

Garza adds, “I had a hard time getting into the house, and sometimes even had to crawl. I will be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life, so this ramp makes a huge difference for us.”

trends of 2011

Mike Arnold, owner of Accent Kitchen & Bath, along with his teammates will be presenting two seminars during the Fall Home Show.

“Bathroom Trends for 2011” provides an opportunity to learn about new trends and today’s new barrier-free Mike Arnold, Accent Kitchen & Bath shower systems that look great and allow “aging in place” for the older population. In the second seminar, “Kitchen Trends for 2011,” Accent will walk attendees through the latest products for the kitchen: appliances, cabinet layout, flooring, countertops, lighting, plumbing and more. Arnold, platinum sponsor of the Fall Home Show, past president of the Home Builders Association of F-M and 2005 “Builder of the Year,” gave us a teaser to his seminars and shared details of the ins and outs of remodeling before taking the stage:

Tell me why you recommend choosing products for “aging in place” during a remodel? Anyone remodeling a bathroom in their 50s and 60s choose to design for “aging in place” for a couple reasons.

www.ndhfa.org • 800-292-8621 To ensure you are receiving the benefits of a true first-time homebuyer loan, contact the NDHFA for participating lender information. R001619329

First, it does not cost much more. Second, it can look fantastic. The new products allow for a very classy “highend” open look without the industrial feel. New custom shower systems have no ledge to step over when getting into the shower. The open custom tile shower is the focal point of the room, making the room feel larger. The toilets are “green friendly,” using as little as 1.3 gallons per flush. They also stand 3 inches higher. Grab bars now come in high fashion colors and can be added later or at the time of a remodel. The safety tub walk-in system is ever changing with ample models to choose from. With the cost of assisted living centers, doing a remodel that facilitates

staying home longer makes good financial sense.

MS. Simplicity will speak on organization in a person’s home. What products do you have to help a client stay more organized? Today’s cabinets have exciting new storage. Everything is inside your cabinets. We have new corner cabinet systems, extended drawer guides and large drawers are now being used to store pots and pans and plates. There are pullouts to organize spices in filler spaces as well as pull-out garbage and recycling centers. We also have near by locker systems for children in the back entry way. The cabinet organizers will help benefit any user of these products. They make kitchens more functional and organized and are becoming more popular as they simplify our busy lives. Also, there are cabinets that open at the push of a button now for users that may have a hard time with pulling or pushing actions. Faucets are now motion activated helping users become more efficient in the kitchen.

How many remodels does Accent do per year? Accent typically does 50 kitchens a year and over 200 bathrooms from small to large to totally custom.

What types of comments do you usually get after finishing a remodeling project? People are always surprised how much better things look than they had envisioned during the planning phase. Clients never have buyers’ remorse with a kitchen or bathroom. People also enjoy working with our employees and they fall in love with the new form and function of their room. They enjoy the relationship during the construction. “Kitchen Trends for 2011,” will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2. “Bathroom Trends for 2011” will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday Oct. 1 and at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2.

[RAMPS, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3]

CONNIE MERE’S STORY… In early February, 2010, volunteers from the Remodelers Council spent the day at Moorhead resident Connie Mere’s home constructing a ramp, which allowed her to venture outside for the first time in over two months. Mere was in an accident 34 years ago that resulted in the loss of both her legs from the knee down. “I really appreciate what they did because it’s beautiful!” Mere says. “And, it’s definitely better than my old one, that’s for sure!”

The Remodelers Council is a committee of the Home Builders Association of F-M that deals with issues affecting the remodeling segment of the building industry. The Council was formed in 1990 and assists in planning and coordinating the Fall Home Show. Council members regularly lend their efforts to charitable projects and build two to three ramps a year. They also built bunk beds for the Gladys Ray Shelter in Fargo last year. The Council’s last major project was the RENEW (Restoring Existing Neighborhoods for Everyone’s Wellbeing) Home, a 100-yearold home that was renovated and sold last year to an income-eligible family. The Council teamed up with the Home Builders Care of FargoMoorhead Foundation and HBA of F-M membership to remodel the home at 923 5th Ave. S. in Fargo. RENEW Home’s goals: • help revitalize one of Fargo’s older neighborhoods, • help an income-eligible family achieve the dream of homeownership, and • showcase the remodeling industry by demonstrating what can be done to fix up an existing home. Cutting the clutter with

MS. Simplicity BY LAURA STONEBURNER lstoneburner@forumcomm.com There comes a point in many peoples’ lives where their lifelong collection becomes overwhelming. The stacks of mail in the kitchen hinder the ability to cook. Excess furniture that “you paid good money for” crowds the living space. Towel and product overload consumes all available bathroom storage. Parts of the home become unusable due to clutter. “This is never about being lazy,” Melissa

Schmalenberger explained. “It’s usually about people being overwhelmed. Sometimes people just need help. Just like you’d hire a trainer to workout at the gym, I just help you organize your home.” Schmalenberger, now better known as MS. Simplicity, began her career as a lawyer in 1995. After years in the profession, she desired a change. Since she’s always had a knack for organizing, she created her own business and became a professional organizer. Now, she has been helping people sort their homes for nearly five years. “As an attorney, I would never be done with a client. There would always be another fire to put out,” Schmalenberger explained. “When I leave a client now, they are happy, I see their shoulders drop, a spark comes alive. Now, I feel that I’m a part of creating happiness instead of destroying it.” She says since most people grew up with parents or grandparents who lived through the depression, they’re still in our heads saying “it’s still in good shape; you paid good money for it.” So they continue the collection.

A home office before the help of MS. Simplicity

“But if you’re not using it, why do you have it?” MS Simplicity asked. “We need to either stop buying stuff, buy smarter, or start getting rid of stuff. Maybe a combination of all three of those things,” Schmalenberger said. Schmalenberger firmly believes in the Pareto’s Principle (the 80-20 rule) and often explains it to her clients, emphasizing that it applies to most everything in life. “For example, your closet – you wear 20 percent of your clothes 80 percent of the time. The idea is to find what the 20 percent is and get rid of the

80 percent. It’s the same thing with the kitchen, garages, the meals you make…” she explained. This rule is deemed important due to the lack of space some people have because of their “need” to keep possessions. In fact, MS. Simplicity says off-site storage is currently one of the fastestgrowing aspects of real estate. “I tell people to save their money, hire me. We’ll get your stuff out of storage and be done with that forever.” In her appearance at the Fall Home Show, MS. Simplicity will give

She also says garages are comparable to an extra room in a house, though often overlooked. “Sometimes when you don’t know where something should go, it gets thrown in the garage. They can be very useful spaces; they can be designed to be an organized area for things you want to have quick, easy access to; things you use a couple of times per year. There are spaces in garages that people often don’t think about,” she said. Garage information will be discussed in further detail during her seminar, “Garages: The Forgotten Room.”

9 | page with no judgment, I leave with no stories.” “If I told people what I see, I could never work again. First of all it’s unethical. Second, I want people to trust me – show me all the skeletons in their closet so we can deal with them.” MS. Simplicity hopes to impact the Fall Home Show attendees in a positive way. “I hope they walk away and have a sense of peace and know that they can work with whatever they have. They can remodel a space, but they

seminars on the topics of garages, clutter “hot spots”, and the kitchen. She says making the kitchen functional is extremely important this day in age. “It’s where friends gather when they come over. You need to make your kitchen functional so when you’re in there, you’re relaxed, you enjoy it and everything makes sense. If you use a food processor once per year, don’t keep it in your kitchen. Keep stuff you use in your kitchen,” she explained. Kitchen information will be discussed in further detail during her seminar,

“Kitchen: The Heart of the Home.” Most people have what MS. Simplicity would refer to as a “clutter hot spot”. “A lot of times people have paper clutter that accumulates in the kitchen because flat spaces beg to be filled up with clutter. A kitchen’s counters plead ‘pile stuff up on me!’ Sometimes it’s as simple as adding a basket to corral all the papers so it looks pretty, it’s all in one place and you can still live,” she said.

“I walk the walk and talk the talk. I’m a mom of three. I’m busy. My kids are involved and I know what it’s like to have to get a house looking in good shape. I tell people they can come to my house and it’s not going to be perfect because I’m a work in progress as well. It’s hard to give advice to people if you haven’t lived their life,” she said.

Clutter hot spot information will be discussed in further detail during her seminar, “Cleaning up the Clutter Hot Spots.”

MS. Simplicity understands most clients are embarrassed by their homes, hence her tagline: “I enter

FALL HOME SHOW

Homeownership

builds communities!

National survey on housing and homeownership finds good news from Americans... As America struggles with complex economic challenges in the wake of a massive recession, certain principles, like the value of homeownership, have come under intense scrutiny. Some policymakers even suggest that homeownership and housing choice should no longer be national priorities.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES & TIMEFRAMES

This flies in the face of what many Americans believe, according to a recent national survey conducted jointly by Public Opinion Strategies and Lake Research Partners. The survey makes clear that owning a home is still very much a part of the American Dream.

Moorhead/Dilworth Two-year Tax Exemption • www.cityofmoorhead.com/housing/programs.asp • www.dilworthcitymn.com • Available for homes built in 2009 through 2011, for the two subsequent years.

Americans believe that homeownership is the single best investment for middle class families and helps provide for their retirement and their children’s education. They also believe that a strong housing industry means more jobs and more money in our communities. Key Survey Results • 75 percent of voters say that owning a home is the best long-term investment they can make. • 73 percent of voters who do not currently own a home say it is a goal of theirs to eventually buy a home. • 71 percent of voters oppose proposals to eliminate the mortgage interest deduction, and 63 percent oppose proposals to reduce it. The majority also oppose eliminating the deduction for interest paid on home equity loans, eliminating the deduction for interest paid on a second home, limiting the deduction for those earning over $250,000 per year, or limiting the deduction for home owners with mortgages over $500,000. • 95 percent of home owners say they are happy with their decision to own a home, and believe that owning their own home is important. • A majority of voters (57 percent) across party lines say they would be less likely to support a candidate for Congress who wanted to eliminate the home mortgage interest deduction. The biggest barrier for those who want to own a home is money for a down payment and closing costs.

Federal Tax Credits • Department of Energy: www.energy.gov/taxbreaks.htm • Deadlines vary from Dec. 31, 2011, for energy-efficiency items to Dec. 31, 2016, for renewable-energy items.

DID YOU KNOW? ...today’s interest rates could get you a $280,000 mortgage for monthly payments less than a $100,000 mortgage in 1981? ...interest rates peaked Oct. 1981 at 18.45%? Average interest rates per decade: 2000s - 6.3% 1990s - 8.1% 1980s - 12.7% 1970s - 9%
