FEATURED SPEAKER Don Engebretson BY LAURA STONEBURNER lstoneburner@forumcomm.com At age 28, Don Engebretson bought his first home. The day he took possession of his first piece of property he became infatuated with gardening. “All of a sudden I owned a half-acre with trees and lawn and weird shrubs I knew little about. And all I wanted to do was spend my time outside figuring stuff out,” he said.

We can take your out-of-date bathtub from outdated to outstanding in as little as one day. Update Outdated Bathtubs Tub to Shower Conversions Walk-In Tubs

Now, years later, Engebretson is referred to as The Renegade Gardener because of the stern eye he keeps on the industry that, as he says, “tries to sell homeowners the concept that gardening is easy, takes little time and doesn’t require development of skills.” Gardeners of all ages and degrees of experience respond to Engebretson’s witty and insightful take on the state of gardening in America today. Although Fargo is nothing new to Engebretson, he will be taking the trip to appear at the Home & Garden Show.

Barrier Free Showers

The Renegade Gardener will be presenting three seminars throughout the weekend: “Crafting Cool & Creative Containers,” “Top 10 Gardening Blunders—and How to Avoid Them!” and “Yes You Can! Landscape Design for Homeowners.” “Crafting Cool & Creative Containers” will focus on container gardening, which has become a huge interest. His hands-on presentation will teach homeowners everything they need to know to create a dazzling container arrangement. During his presentation “Top 10 Gardening & Landscaping Blunders—and How to Avoid Them!” Engebretson will discuss how gardening is a lifelong learning process that involves more than a little guesswork. Down the road, every gardener is sure to discover that startling success sometimes goes hand-inhand with staggering failure. Engebretson wants to help gardeners severely limit the “staggering failure” part of the equation, and does so in this presentation.

“Yes You Can! Landscape Design for Homeowners” is a presentation created as a result of consumer demand. “I want to landscape my own yard but don’t know the steps, or where to begin,” is something Engebretson hears often. He will take the audience through every step of the design process and instill the knowledge and confidence

they need to create the beautiful yard, garden and overall landscape. After each seminar, Engebretson will answer questions anyone in the audience might have. He says the most common questions are about deer and varmint control, how to fix soil, best new varieties of plants, gardening in shade and how to prune. He said audiences respond favorably to three things about his presentations: practical, solid education, examples from his experiences over 25 years of gardening, and humor. “We laugh a lot at my talks. Though I am a University of Minnesota Extension Service Master Gardener, much of my gardening knowledge comes from decades of gardening, and people in my audiences often tell me they relate easily to my teaching style,” he explained. Engebretson has written four books. Stone Landscaping is a comprehensive how-to book for gardeners interested in creating pro-quality stone features in their landscapes. Perennials for Minnesota and Wisconsin is a complete selection, care and use guide to the best and hardiest perennials for upper Midwest gardens. Annuals for Minnesota and Wisconsin features over 500 of the best and most beautiful varieties of annuals for short-season gardens (and containers). His newest book, Tree & Shrub Gardening for Minnesota and Wisconsin, looks at more than 850 trees and shrubs sure to enhance your landscape. Engebretson has written for national publications including Better Homes & Gardens, recently winning his sixth national writing award from the Garden Writers Association of America. He also regularly appears on HGTV’s “TIPical Mary Ellen” and PBSTV’s “Hometime.” Meet The Renegade Gardener after his seminars in Accent Kitchen & Bath’s booth! See page 20.

FEATURED SPEAKERS Mad Dog & Merrill BY LAURA STONEBURNER lstoneburner@forumcomm.com Can you grill cheese? According to cheese-head grilling buddies Mad Dog & Merrill, there’s nothing you can’t cook on the grill. “We’ve never been stumped before,” said Merrill. Mad Dog & Merrill travel the country performing in front of live audiences, writing cookbooks and making videos to show people how easy it is to be creative and entertain in their own backyard. This will be their second time appearing at the Home & Garden Show and the duo is excited to teach and entertain in the fellow Midwestern state again. The grilling buddies got their start doing grilling demonstrations. At the time, no cooking shows existed, especially ones revolving around the grill. Now, 30 years later, they are assisting backyard enthusiasts all over the country in having fun while improving their grilling skills.

“We inform and entertain at same time. We show you how to have fun, relax and be informed. They learn a lot from us,” Merrill said. “It’s really great because we’re down-home type of folks. The people who come to see our shows are anywhere from novice to experts and we cover the whole gamut. We utilize things you have in your home, in your fridge or in your spice cabinet.” The Wisconsin Duo will share the “art of enjoying the time spent behind the BBQ” and will be basing their presentation on seven to eight different items – appetizers, veggies, main meals – even desserts! The grilling buddies will run through the grilling process, the grills and how to set up. They will also discuss the top ten mistakes grillers make and easy solutions. According to Merrill, the most common problem grillers experience is burning food and dry meat. “Men like to crank the grill on high, watch the smoke going out onto the street, the smell spread throughout the neighborhood. If people just turn things down and enjoy, it makes for a more enjoyable experience and reduces the risk of ending up with a tiny, dry burnt piece of meat.” Merrill added that they really want to push grillology in general.

Sure, gardening is fun, soothing, enriching and all of that, but don’t always believe it when you see a landscaping project described as “easy,” or a plant touted as “foolproof.” Gardening is a lifelong learning process that involves more than a little guesswork, serendipity and experimentation. Every gardener is sure to discover that startling success sometimes goes hand-in-hand with staggering failure. Don Engebretson, The Renegade Gardener, wants to help gardeners severely limit the “staggering failure” part of the equation, and does so in this presentation.

FOR HOMEOWNERS

RENEGADE GARDENER: CRAFTING COOL & CREATIVE CONTAINERS Garden containers filled with colorful annuals, perennials, and even small trees and shrubs, are essential accessories to home landscapes. Renegade Gardener Don Engebretson calls containers “the throw pillows of exterior design” and encourages gardeners to think outside the box when it comes to not only the overall materials used in arrangements, but in their placement and use.

1960s Home & Garden Show ‘Idea Book’ tidbits • Moorhead State Bank offers $5 for each improvement loan upon approval. • A flooring article advertises carpeting for kitchens and bathrooms as another addition in floor coverings to the market. • An ad touting “Sliding Walls of Glass,” or as we know them now, sliding glass doors. • “Dacor Miracle Bricks” offered “new decorating vistas to the amateur and professional alike…. Are molded individually to look like real bricks, yet are only ¼-inch thick. They may be applied to any surface with a special mastic developed to look like real cement when dry.” • There was “growing public acceptance” of drywall construction rather than plastering interior walls and ceilings. • An ad promoted brick-patterned walls in basements that are nothing more than the poured concrete foundation walls, finished

with two coats of ordinary masonry paint! • More brick and stone being used on new homes in fireplaces and on the front of the home. • An article promotes home improvement loans up to $3,500 with payment plans permitting as long as 60 months to repay! • A “breakthrough” was Culligan’s automated electronic water softener. • Rigid-vinyl awnings were all the rage offering guarantees against hail damage and no repainting. • Tappan Time Machines, or better known today as microwaves, promised “A complete meal in 30 minutes. It’s cooler… only the foods become warm.” • A brand new home for just $10,750 (garage extra). • A selling feature was “electric” kitchens equipped to stay modern electrically for years to come.

Hot Home Security Trends: mobile command, smart integration, video monitoring (ARA) - Homeowners who installed early home security systems often wound up thinking they would have been better off simply installing sturdy locks on their doors and calling it a day. The technology was labor-intensive to install, offered keypads that looked as complicated as an airplane cockpit, and did nothing for you if the homeowner forgot to set the alarm before leaving the house. Fast forward to 2011, and today’s technology has helped make home security systems easier to use, more effective and flexible to fit our modern, mobile lifestyles. And statistics indicate homeowners have ample reason to consider installing a security system. Nearly 1.4 million homes were burglarized in 2009, accounting for 72 percent of total burglaries, according to FBI statistics. The average loss per burglary was more than $2,000, and that figure doesn’t take into account the emotional trauma of having your home invaded and possessions taken. If you’re considering purchasing a home security system, it’s helpful to know trends in terms of available technology and how others are using it to protect their homes and families:

SMART INTEGRATION Once, homeowners used separate systems to manage security and fire detection. Modern systems, however, integrate these functions. What’s more, many security systems now integrate easily into home automation systems, which means that homeowners can control multiple elements in their homes in addition to ensuring the home is safe. They can arm their security systems and turn on the lights, control the thermostat and open garage doors - all remotely - through one integrated system.

MORE THAN KEEPING THE BAD GUYS OUT In the early days of home security, the focus was on keeping the bad guys out of your home. While that’s still an important function of home security systems, today’s technology makes it possible to use the system to keep track of and care for the loved ones still inside your home. You can set the system to e-mail you a video clip of your child coming in the front door - so you have visual confirmation that she’s home safe.

Caring for aging parents from afar? Equip their home with a security system and you can look in on them from time to time and see how they are. Or, place a sensor on the medicine cabinet and you can set the system to send you an alert in case your parents forget to take their medication - and don’t open the medicine cabinet.

MOBILE COMMAND Use of handheld mobile devices has boomed in America over the past few years. People use smart phones, laptops and a variety of wireless devices to keep in touch with friends and family, communicate regarding business matters, monitor world events, track weather and even plan a route home from work when there’s an accident along the usual course. Home security is on track with this highly mobile lifestyle. Apps for the iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and Android smartphones make it possible to access real-time video of your home’s interior, monitor system components and completely control the system from anywhere.

LANDSCAPE Basics

BY KRISTA MUND A beautiful yard requires considerable planning and regular attention. Most homeowners take years to achieve the yard they want. Planning to install items in stages can spread the cost and work over several seasons.

You will need to over-seed at some point, perhaps more than once. It generally takes one growing season to establish a good lawn, longer if weather conditions are difficult or if you do not have the time to devote. Before seeding, fill any slight depressions with a light layer of topsoil. Minimize traffic on newly seeded areas and avoid weed killer for at least 60 days. Keep the seed moist, not wet.

Sod: Newly placed sod requires extra water for several weeks. Water in the cool part of the Ryan Hoss, Baker Nursery day at regular intervals for the Gardens, says that wellfirst three weeks. New sod and designed landscaping accomplishes four things: it adds the extra watering can sometimes create drainage value to a home; provides screening from outdoor weather concerns that will disappear when the yard is established elements, traffic noise and neighbors; prevents erosion and and requires normal watering. protects the foundation. When planting trees, Hoss advises choosing varieties hardy enough for zone 4. Local nurseries and gardening centers are well-versed in trees that do well in the F-M area.

IN THE FARGO-MOORHEAD AREA First Time Home Buyers:

The Housing Market’s Key Players (NewsUSA) - First-time homebuyers, more than any other demographic, stand to benefit the most in today’s real estate market. In fact, a recent survey commissioned by Move.com reveals that 23 percent of adults plan to purchase a home in the next five years and that more than half of them (53.5 percent) will be first-time homebuyers.

buyers back despite the critical picture in the overall economy. In the past, high prices and large down payments made buying a home for the firsttime difficult. The right mix of attractive listing prices, tax credits, improved financing and a wide choice of properties seems to be attracting the first-time buyer.

Consider that every time a renter buys a home, they make possible a chain reaction of transactions worth many times more than the actual value of the home they purchase. Because first-time homebuyers aren’t selling properties, they don’t put new homes on the market when they buy. As a result, first-time homebuyers reduce real estate inventories and allow existing owners to trade-up or relocate.

For first-time homebuyers looking to be players in today’s real estate market, Move. com offers the following tips: - Research Your Market. All real estate is localized and the key to a successful purchase is to know the market. In fact, the real estate market is so localized that prices among similar homes vary greatly even between neighboring towns.

The growing number of first-time homebuyers suggests that conditions are finally attracting

meet your needs. You can go to Realtor.com to view homes that fit your specifications. This will give you an idea of what is possible in your price range and in the location you prefer. - Get pre-approved. Although not a final loan commitment, a pre-approval letter can be shown to listing brokers when you are bidding on a home. It demonstrates your financial strength and shows that you have the ability to go through with a purchase. Lenders can be found in the finance section of Realtor.com. - Make a decision. Once you find the best home that fits your needs, take action. Homebuyers often hesitate, and this could mean you miss the best home that meets your needs. If you have chosen a good mortgage broker and a sharp realtor, you should have the facts to make the right decision.

KIDS’ WORKSHOP Sponsored by The Home Depot

Wondering what to do with the kids? North Dakota State University’s Human Development and Family Science Club (HDFS Club) is offering childcare services at the Home and Garden Show. Childcare services are offered in a 1,500square-foot playground for potty-trained children ages 3-7. Cost is $3 per hour for the first child and $2 for each additional child, with a limit of two hours. All proceeds go to HDFS. DECKMASTERS will provide a Woodplay Playset for use in the playground during the show.

*Located on the mezzanine level, above the lobby Saturday, Feb. 26, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, noon – 4 p.m. Kids’ Workshops are free “How-To Clinics” designed for children ages 6-12. Children, accompanied by an adult, construct projects from pre-fabricated kits that are designed to be both educational and practical. Currently, The Home Depot Kids’ Workshops offer more than 50 projects; they range from wooden birdhouses, step stools and sailboats to more educational projects like the plastic bag recycle box and window bird box, where kids can watch birds build nests. The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults and children. Each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to a Home Depot associate’s apron, and an achievement.

HBA HELPS KEEP HOUSING AFFORDABLE, Offers access to building industry professionals

The HBA played a big part in legislation that allows the tax exemptions on new construction currently available to home buyers through the cities of Fargo and West Fargo. Staff and members also worked diligently at the North Dakota Legislature to head off ineffective fire sprinkler mandates that could have raised the cost of a single family home by thousands of dollars.

Bryce Johnson HBA Executive Vice President

We are here for you, whether you are buying a home, remodeling a home or just looking for some ideas to refresh the home or yard you already love. The HBA of F-M, its staff, leadership and members want to be the go-to source for you throughout the home journey that is uniquely yours.

WHAT WE OFFER YOU! • Governmental voice On the local, state and national levels, we are always advocating for legislation that keeps housing affordable to you, the home buyer and renovator. The HBA played a big part in legislation that allows the tax exemptions on new construction currently available to home buyers through the cities of Fargo and West Fargo. Our staff and members also worked diligently at the North Dakota Legislature to head off ineffective fire sprinkler mandates that could have raised the cost of a new single family home by thousands of dollars. These are just two examples of major achievements on the state level. We also

advocate on the local level and have wonderful relationships with our metro area city governments. Government officials routinely seek feedback from the HBA when it comes to implementing regulations that may impact home buyers. Most often, we are asked to sit at the table on the front end of changes rather than be put in a reactive position to oppose restrictive regulations. • Access to members and information You can access our membership and others involved in the home building industry through our printed directory, online at www.hbafm.com, at the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show, at the Fall Home
