Awards & Accolades • Moore Engineering, Inc., was one of four engineering firms recognized by the North Dakota Chapter of the American Public Works Association with the 2011 Project of the Year award for the 45th Street Corridor Interceptor Sewer System in Fargo. • The North Dakota Beta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at North Dakota State University inducted John Gunkelman, Dakota Construction of Fargo, Inc., into its inaugural Hall of Fame at the fraternity’s 75th anniversary celebration. • Nikki Nelson, Western Products, Inc., has been elected president of the North Dakota Society of Certified Public Accountants. • The National Association of Women Business Owners of the Greater Red River Valley has named Rikka Brandon, Building Gurus, as president, and Tracy Green, Realty Executives North Plains, as vice president. HBA recaps priorities for 2011

Each January your HBA of F-M sets priorities for its leadership and staff to address in the upcoming year. Many of these main priorities remain fairly constant, including a focus on public/ governmental affairs and membership. Tyrone Leslie These two items are the reason for Heritage Homes our existence and the rest of what the Association does follows those efforts. While we remain somewhat sheltered from the economic downturn seen across many parts of the country, the Fargo-Moorhead area and some of our members are being affected. I sincerely thank you for your membership and for allowing me to be your president. I appreciate this leadership role and enjoy being a part of the Association’s workings at the national and state levels, as well as locally. We hope that all members will look to us as a resource and helpful organization when confronting challenges that may lie ahead.

Membership

Members like you are what make up this wonderful Association. You are always at the top of our priorities list. In 2011, we focused on evaluating and improving current member benefits and programming. We continue to explore ways to enrich membership experience through involvement, networking and offering creative member opportunities to market their services through expanded advertising opportunities and possible enhancements for online presence of trade shows. Our recruitment goal this year was 65 new members (22 Builders, 43 Associates) with a retention rate goal of 93 percent. As of the Nov. 15 board of directors meeting, we have recruited 55 new members with a retention rate of 91.9 percent, one of the highest in the nation!

Public Affairs

Public affairs remains a busy area for the HBA. An overlying goal at all times is to further strengthen relationships with government and community-related entities. During the legislative session, we worked hand-in-hand with the North Dakota Association of Builders to propose legislation and advocate for affordable housing, opposing unnecessary regulatory increases across the entire state of North Dakota and supporting infrastructure funding in oilproducing counties. We also made efforts to strengthen ties with the Builders Association of Minnesota through attendance at the Minnesota Builders Convention and Builder Day on the Hill. We continued to monitor and support legislative efforts of BAM by facilitating more staff and local member involvement and contact with local and state legislators, as well as federal offices (limited to the districts the HBA covers).

Your HBA worked with other community organizations to create community days at the capitols of North Dakota and Minnesota where legislators across the state could share ideas and concerns in an effort to strengthen bridges. Locally, HBA staff has been deeply involved with the city of Fargo on establishing an ordinance for the planting and preservation of trees that is workable for the building industry and homeowners alike. We also have been monitoring building setbacks near rivers in response to flooding concerns while continuing to support efforts toward permanent flood protection on a metro-wide level. Throughout the year, we continued strong promotion of and education on the local tax incentives available to both consumers and the industry for new construction and renovation.

Public Relations

Your HBA is the voice of the residential building industry locally, and we continued to proactively promote the positive news happening within the industry while also addressing negative issues and news stories. In October, we released a housing impact study for the F-M metro area that demonstrated home building’s positive impact on our communities in the form of jobs. The study also definitively showed that new growth pays for itself. Within that release, your HBA also pointed out the need for aggressive action on permanent flood protection and a need to reduce unnecessary regulation. It is our leaders’ belief that these two concerns are adding to unstable economy as building permit numbers slowed from 2010 to 2011. We are also making increased efforts to improve communication with the community and consumers to become the go-to source for building industry resources. Through our public events publications and the Membership Directory & Buyer’s Guide we also make efforts to educate consumers about HBA’s legislative successes impacting them.

Education

With education a key part of our mission, your HBA continues to offer the most current education on regulatory changes affecting the industry. Staff and the Education Committee work to stay on top of Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry regulations governing Minnesota contractor continuing education requirements, while adapting to the ever-changing Minnesota licensing standards. Our commitment to the National Association of Home Builders’ designation program has also remained high and we have increased the number of member participants achieving professional designations offered by NAHB as well as NDAB through University of Housing courses and applying for N.D. Professional Builder credit.

to be able to continue helping elect housing-friendly candidates. Instead of striving for a total dollar value (but the $30,000 mark in mind), we hoped to increase the number of contributors over what the HBA has seen in the past by promoting NAHB’s Century Club ($100) level. To date, we have raised over $20,000 for PAC with 81 individuals contributing. That is a 20 percent increase over last year! Thank you to all members who have stepped up to the challenge to give through the 20.12 Challenge. Your HBA also hosted Candidates Forums for the Moorhead elections and supported those friendly to the building industry. This is a taste of what your HBA’s priorities were for 2011. I hope that you had a wonderful year and continue to prosper in this great industry. If we can help you in any way, please do not hesitate to contact the office. Remember, we are here for you!

The city of Fargo is currently working on several ordinances which would alter or create new regulations for the home building industry. New FEMA floodplain maps have created a situation in which an increase in the base flood elevation is necessary. In addition to this change, city officials are working on ordinances to deal with building along the river and the preservation of trees. The HBA is taking an active role in discussions during the creation of these new policies. City officials have been open to industry input and are looking for creative ways to deal with the new federal policies. The HBA is looking for more member input on each of these issues. 51st Annual Home & Garden Show features HGTV host

The 51st Annual Red River Valley Home & Garden Show is coming up Feb. 24-26 at the Fargodome and the HBA of F-M is excited to bring you John Gidding as the 2012 featured speaker. Gidding is an architect, designer and the host of HGTV’s popular television show Curb Appeal! He is originally from Istanbul and has experience in residential, commercial and landscape architecture as well as urban and graphic design. Gidding’s book of projects shows the transformations of average homes into sculptural showpieces. His specialty is in the creation of sculptural interior architecture. His second seminar will give tips for improving a home’s curb appeal. Public Issues Report of Area Affairs

Moorhead, Dilworth elect council members by Rocky Schneider, Public Affairs Coordinator

On Nov. 8, the cities of Dilworth and Moorhead held elections for local offices. In Dilworth, the election was held for two City Council positions. In Moorhead, the election was held for one council position in each of the four wards. Let’s take a look at the results. In Moorhead, in the first ward, Nancy Otto was re-elected. In the second ward, Heidi Durand won the election for the open seat vacated by Diane Wray Williams. In the third ward, Mike Hulett beat incumbent Dan Hunt. In the fourth ward, Steve Gerhtz won a four-way contest which included Moorhead City Council candidates address issues to HBA members incumbent during the Candidate Forums in November. Greg Lemke. In Dilworth, the election resulted in both incumbents being re-elected. The commission will welcome back Julie Nash and Rick Cariveau to serve another four years. Prior to the elections, the HBA of F-M held a series of Candidate Forums for the Moorhead elections. The forums gave HBA members a chance to hear from each of the candidates and listen to their platforms and visions for the future. The HBA holds Candidate Forums for each local election that are open to the entire membership. The opportunity to both hear what the candidates have to offer, and tell the candidates what the HBA has to offer them, if elected, make the events incredibly valuable. The HBA endorsed three of the four winners in the Moorhead election and offered donations from the North Dakota Association of Builders Political Action Committee. The donations are meant to help elect those candidates who are friendly to the housing industry and have an ear for the issues affecting the Association’s membership. Moorhead twoyear property tax abatement deadline approaches The two-year property tax abatement program granted to Moorhead by the State of Minnesota extends through Dec. 31. In order to qualify a home for the abatement program, builders must obtain a building permit, install footings and complete the footing inspection before Dec. 31. The first-year value of the exemption will be based on the construction completed as of Jan. 2, 2012. The second-year value will be based on construction completed by Jan. 2, 2013. The abatement will be applied to taxes payable in 2013 and 2014. The Moorhead Building Codes Division is ready to help builders take advantage of the program by year’s end. NDAB board votes to oppose measure #2 on property taxes

After much information and discussion, the North Dakota Association of Builders board has Doreen Riedman voted to oppose Measure 2, the NDAB Executive Officer initiated measure that would eliminate property taxes in our state. Some of the major concerns include losing local control, since local property taxes equate to local control of those funds. Over $800 million would need to be made up through other taxes if property taxes were not collected. And, the technical issues raise lots of unanswered questions that would dislocate the tax system in North Dakota.

First BEAM Award presented

This new award originated from the Associates Council at the National Association of Home Builders. Each state was asked to nominate a builder who best exemplifies the motto, “It’s good business to do business with a member.” The BEAM Award (Builders Engaging Associate Members), had nominees from local Associations, and was judged by representatives from each local association. The first BEAM Award winner from North Dakota, who will now go on to compete with other builders from across the country is Rick Tofte of Tofte Brothers Construction in Williston, N.D. Rick extends his thanks to Associate members across the state with these comments: “Thank you for the BEAM Award — this is truly an honor. However, the ones that really need to be thanked are the Associates that we (as Builders) work with on a daily basis — we often times take for granted what they do for us. Minnesota plumbing contractor licensing changes

Starting Jan. 1, Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry will license individuals and businesses that perform or offer to perform plumbing work, with or without compensation, as a licensed plumbing contractor or licensed restricted plumbing contractor. Master plumbers and restricted master plumbers will no longer “hold” the license for a plumbing contractor, but rather will be the “responsible master” for the contractor. The plumbing contractor, as a business entity, shall “hold” the license for itself. The Minnesota legislature made this change in 2010 to align regulation of plumbing contractors with that of electrical contractors, high-pressure-piping contractors, elevator contractors, residential roofers, technology system contractors and residential building contractors. The law clarifies that business entities contracting to perform plumbing work shall be directly accountable for their business actions as a contractor. News from the National Association of Home Builders Builder confidence rises three points in November

Nov. 16, 2011 - Builder confidence in the market for newly-built, single-family homes rose by three points to 20 on the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) for November. The gain builds on a revised three-point increase in October, and brings the confidence gauge to its highest level since May of 2010. “While this second solid monthly gain on the builder confidence scale is encouraging, the overall measure remains quite low due to the many challenges that home building continues to face with regard to the high number of foreclosures, the difficulties of obtaining construction financing and accurate appraisals, and the restrictive lending environment that is discouraging potential buyers,” said Bob Nielsen, NAHB Chairman and a home builder from Reno, Nev. “These problems must be addressed so that housing can contribute to economic and job growth the way it has in the past.” “This second consecutive gain in the HMI is evidence that well-qualified buyers in select areas are being tempted back into the market by today’s extremely favorable mortgage rates and prices,” said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. “We are anticipating further, gradual gains in the builder confidence gauge heading into 2012 due to these pockets of improving conditions that are slowly spreading.” Derived from a monthly survey that NAHB has been

conducting for more than 20 years, the NAHB/Wells Fargo HMI gauges builder perceptions of current single-family home sales and sales expectations for the next six months as good, fair or poor. The survey also asks builders to rate traffic of prospective buyers as high to very high, average, or low to very low. Scores from each component are then used to calculate a seasonally adjusted index where any number over 50 indicates that more builders view conditions as good than poor. Each of the HMI’s three component indexes continued to build on gains registered in the previous month in November. The component gauging current sales conditions rose three points to 20 – its highest level since May 2010 – while the component gauging future sales expectations rose two points to 25 – its highest level since March of 2011. The component gauging traffic of prospective buyers rose one point to 15, which was its highest point since May of 2010. The HMI rose in three out of four regions in November, with a three-point gain to 17 registered in the Northeast, an eight-point gain to 23 registered in the Midwest, and a twopoint gain to 21 registered in the South. After posting a big increase in October, the West returned to trend this month with a six-point decline to 15. HBA encourages member participation in Habitat Build

The HBA of F-M, Home Builders Care Foundation and Remodelers Council will build a home with Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity in the summer of 2012. The home’s location and recipient family has not been determined yet. HBA representatives met with Habitat for Humanity organizers in October; up to $60,000 in cash will be needed to complete the build. The HBA will also need donations of materials, products and labor. It is still early, but there are ways members can help prepare! 1. Tour de Habitat - Many HBA members are also involved in the Tour de Habitat bike race each March that raises funds for Habitat for Humanity. HBA sets 2012 Minnesota contractor, electrical contractor continuing education dates

The HBA of F-M has set its 2012 Minnesota building contractor continuing education dates for Jan. 18 or Feb. 1. Both dates will include the same set of classes satisfying seven hours of continuing education which are pending approval with the Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry. Water quality trading could reduce rising storm water regulatory costs for home builders

The National Association of Home Builders’ Nation’s Building News reported Oct. 31 that water quality credit trading programs are seen as a significant opportunity for home builders and developers to reduce the cost of storm water management regulations. Requirements around the nation are growing fast to reduce storm water sediment or nutrients into streams, lakes and reservoirs. In its effort to push the environment to the top of national priorities, the Obama Administration has been intent on increasing the use of Low Impact Development for controlling storm water from new development. A number of new national storm water rules are expected to be proposed next year to address impaired waters and new LID requirements. In many areas of the country, home builders are already feeling the bite of more stringent water quality standards by states and localities, which will be required to develop thousands of such programs over the next several decades. Water quality trading programs have appeared on the landscape in a number of states to help achieve water quality goals in a cost-effective manner, reducing the financial impact of stricter water quality standards. These programs provide options under which traders can participate on a voluntary basis to lower their costs.

Builders not included

Many of these programs address storm water discharges such as those that can occur during home building activities. In states like Pennsylvania, some developers are already water quality trading participants. However, most home builders do not have the option of participating in trading because their storm water permits are short in duration, much shorter than the normal fiveyear permit for publicly owned treatment works which - along with agriculture - constitute the bulk of trading

participants. NAHB has been working with the water trading community to come up with ideas that would enable home builders to participate in the trading programs under development. On its website, the Environmental Protection Agency describes water trading and its advantages. The agency calls it “an innovative approach to achieve water quality goals more efficiently. “Trading is based on the fact that sources in a watershed can face very different costs to control the same pollutant. “Trading programs allow facilities facing higher pollution control costs to meet their regulatory obligations by purchasing environmentally equivalent (or superior) pollution reductions from another source at lower cost, thus achieving the same water quality improvement at lower overall cost.”

Trading storm water retention credits

In those areas of the U.S. where developers have been able to participate in state water quality credit trading, the programs are generally small and focused on a particular state watershed or a body of water that is impaired. And there seems to be few existing programs where a home builder with a short-duration storm water permit can purchase credits to lower a project’s costs. However, for the first time, a major U.S. city Washington, D.C. - is considering trading storm water retention (volume) credits. Since one of the new federal storm water rules expected to be proposed in 2012 may impose quite strenuous water retention requirements, this type of trading program would greatly benefit cities such as Washington that are installing LID storm water measures and also help builders and property owners who might want to generate and sell storm water retention credits under such a trading program.

New trading programs for the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load and the Ohio River Basin are among large trading programs now being developed that may provide helpful models for other areas. The HBA of F-M celebrated its membership at the annual Member Appreciation Night Nov. 8. All member companies received two FREE meals on behalf of the HBA to show appreciation for everything members do to keep the Association strong and the industry healthy and growing. Former Greater Fargo-Moorhead President Kevin McKinnon spoke to the membership on the outlook of the Economic Development Corporation and its plans for the future. Fargo, and the entire state of North Dakota, hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t felt the hard economic times as a lot of the country, but we continue striving to grow and develop with new business entering our area and bringing in thousands of new residents every year. Cass County Commissioners Darrell Vanyo and Scott Wagner also informed those in attendance on the N.D. Property Tax Measure #2 and how it may affect those living and paying taxes in Fargo. Home Builders Care Foundation held its annual Scholarship Reception prior to the GMM where it awarded twelve scholarships to area students. See all HBC scholarship recipients on page 30. In 2007, Chase Realty was founded to help with lot sales in Shadow Wood development and the sale of new construction homes. Chase Realty still focuses on home lots in Shadow Wood today, but has expanded to marketing home lots in Maple Ridge in West Fargo and Johnson Farms in Moorhead. It is also currently finalizing another new development in south Fargo. Drew Likness, broker for Chase Realty, joined the HBA of F-M in 2007 and serves on the New Member Development and Retention Committee. Likness graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance from Minnesota State University Moorhead and has been licensed in real estate since Drew Likness, Chase Realty. 2005. He has ten years of financial services industry experience, and brings his knowledge and experience to those purchasing a lot and/or a new home. “The new-home buying process is much different than an existing home and it helps to have someone as a resource that is familiar with this process,” says Likness. When he first began in the industry, Likness focused specifically on newhome construction, but has evolved to represent buyers and sellers of existing homes. Through job experience, he has learned just how important the homebuilding industry is to the economy. Likness is optimistic about the industry and is thankful to be in a region that is doing well economically, compared to most of the country. “It’s exciting to be a part of a growing city and be involved in planning a new neighborhood that people will be able to enjoy for years to come,” he says. A big challenge, however, for the real estate industry around the area is the constant concern about flood protection. Chase Realty works in conjunction with city planning officials to keep new neighborhoods out of current and future flood plains. “It is necessary that buyers have the comfort to know that their biggest investment will be protected,” says Likness. Hanson Bros., Inc. is a charter member of the HBA and has been in business for over 50 years. Vern Hanson, his brother Gerald and Vern’s son Mike are now running the business. Vern’s and Gerald’s father and uncles founded the company in 1949 and were active HBA members from the beginning. Hanson Bros., Inc., is a Parade of Homes participant and is a regular exhibitor in the RRV Home & Garden Show. The company is a strong supporter of workforce development, with Mike and Vern helping out with the Health, Tech & Trades Career Expo and Mike serving on the Home Builders Care scholarship committee. The company also supports HBC by donating funds to the Framework for the Future initiative. Vern is a past HBA board member and president. He received the HBA’s Builder of the Year award in 2004. He currently serves on the Public Issues Committee and remains active in PAC and local governmental affairs. Vern represented the HBA as a state director on the NDAB board, represented the HBA on the NAHB board, served on the HBA’s Health Plan Management Committee and on the Home Builders Care board. Remodeled Home Tour plans come together

The Remodeled Home Tour Taskforce has set its first annual Remodeled Home Tour event for ONE WEEKEND ONLY, Sept. 15-16, 2012. The event will be hosted in conjunction with the Fall Parade of Homes and will land on the second weekend of the parade. The Tour will showcase area remodeled homes. Look for more details coming soon!

Habitat for Humanity build

As we begin to move into a new year, keep in mind the Habitat for Humanity build in the summer of 2012. The Remodelers Council, along with the HBA of F-M and the Home Builders Care Foundation, have partnered with Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a local family. The location and recipient family has not been determined yet. The project will need up to $60,000 to be completed, including donations of material, products and labor. This build is a great way to increase the public’s awareness of the Remodelers Council, HBA and HBC. Consider contributing to the build by making monetary donations to Habitat (make sure to designated your donation to the HBA build), creating a team and fundraising for the Tour de Habitat stationary bike race March 3, 2012 (contact your HBA at (701) 232-5846 for more details), or in-kind donations of materials and labor (a detailed list of needed materials/labor is being created). There will also be an opportunity to support the build at the New Year Celebration & Board of Directors Installation Jan. 5. HBA members and staff will be riding stationary bikes throughout the meeting to raise money, so plan to attend and support the build. Please encourage other members to attend and get involved! What is the Remodelers Council?

The NAHB Remodelers Council was founded in 1982 as department of the National Association of Home Builders. The council’s mission is to serve the remodeling industry and consumers by establishing a written code of ethics, quality standards and by offering information, education and professional designation programs. More than 150 NAHB-affiliate state and local associations have organized Remodeler Councils. Remodelers join the Council to improve their business management skills, to network with peers, to perform community service and to work for the betterment of the industry. Remodeler is a trademark that identifies NAHB members who are active in residential and commercial remodeling. The HBA Remodelers Council was formed in 1990 and assists in the planning and coordination of the Fall Home Show. The Council and its members are known to be very active, within our area, participating in many community service projects. It has partnered with Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity on builds and coordinates the construction of several wheelchair accessibility ramps per year. HBA urges NO vote on N.D. property tax measure #2 by Rocky Schneider, Public Affairs Coordinator

The HBA of F-M urges its North Dakotan members to vote NO on measure #2. The election will be held June 12, 2012. The measure would eliminate property taxes within the state.

Measure #2 is full of consequences: Retroactive Language If the measure were to pass it would create immediate chaos for local jurisdictions. Among other things, the measure’s misguided language would make the result retroactive to Jan. 1 of 2012. This retroactivity would immediately eliminate the funding for such things as building inspectors, engineers, police officers, firemen and many other city and county workers. Defund Flood Fighters In 2011, the Red River did not go below flood stage until June 13. If this situation repeats itself in 2012, this measure would immediately eliminate funding to cities and counties who are actively fighting flooding. Reduces Local Control The elimination of property taxes would require the state legislature to determine how much funding Fargo

or West Fargo needs. Instead of the locally elected city commissioners, legislators from Beulah, to Bowman, to Bismarck could be deciding the needs of the city of Fargo. These are just a few of the many consequences of the ill-thought-out language of Measure #2. While the issue of excessive property tax is one that deserves attention from our elected leaders, this is not the way to go about it. Due to these and other consequences, the HBA actively urges its members to vote NO on June 12. The foundation, created in 1993 by the Home Builders Association of FargoMoorhead, is a local 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization. It was established with funds donated by HBA members, fundraising events and the HBA itself. The purpose for its creation was to provide an outlet for the builder, remodeler, and companies related to the building industry to show the community that there is more to the building industry than demolition, construction, and remodeling. The HBA of F-M handles the administrative duties for the foundation at no charge. Any contribution designated to the foundation goes directly to the foundation and its charitable work.

HBC increases fundraising, donors to cap off 2011

The past year has been a very busy one for Home Builders Care and I am proud to have been able to serve as its president. This year, we dramatically increased the number of donors for Framework for the Future, our long-term fundraising initiative to build the endowment fund. Our first annual telethon was a great success and we found the HBA of F-M members to be very generous. You can see a list of donors as of Nov. 11 on the next page. If you are still considering your year-end donations, consider giving to HBC. We are the Foundation of the Fargo-Moorhead home building industry and work hard to promote and support the industry. There are numerous ways you can donate to the Foundation: • Use Goodsearch and Goodshop when searching and shopping online. Goodshop also offers discounts and coupons so you can get a little something for yourself while giving back. This is a great option if you are doing any Christmas shopping online as they partner with most major retailers. Make sure you type in Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation as the group you support. • Take your aluminum, magazines and paper recycling to Minnkota Recycling. Indicate that you want proceeds to go to Home Builders Care. • Host us at any public or networking event you schedule. Simonson Lumber has asked for free-will donations at its monthly contractor lunches and then matches any donations received. Simonson has done this for the past couple years and it has been very successful. We were also fortunate to partner with Ferguson Bath, Kitchen, & Lighting Showroom to sponsor a Fargo Force game. HBC received a portion of every single-game ticket sold. Through this partnership we received great promotion for the Foundation. The Parade of Homes Featured Homes continues to be one of the Foundation’s biggest fundraisers. This past spring, three builders volunteered their homes to be “featured” during the Parade. Consumers paid $5 to visit all featured homes. Thanks to Dietrich Homes, Kochmann Brothers Homes, Inc., and Stahl Architects and Builders. HBC was able to make scholarship awards of $5,500 to students in the area. One award was made to a Herdina Academy student in June and fall scholarships were awarded to 12 students in November. You can see information about the recipients on pg 30. This year, HBC also helped State Bank & Trust with one of its Pay It Forward projects. State Bank & Trust worked with Rebuilding Together Fargo-Moorhead Area, Inc. to finish a local family’s basement. While State Bank & Trust was providing all the funding and most of the labor, they needed some expertise that HBC trustees were happy to provide. The Foundation helped provide the electrical, HVAC and framing needs in the basement. The 2011 Health Tech & Trades Career Expo is Dec. 8. It is one of the ways HBC supports skill training and education. This Expo is geared toward ninthgrade students as they start to consider what type of higher education or career they may want to pursue. HBC is a gold sponsor of the event and will have a large presence there. We like to have a wide variety of construction sectors represented so students can see all the opportunities available in our industry. NDSU Freedom by Design Chapter looks for more community service projects Flotterud

The North Dakota State University Freedom by Design chapter understands the meaning of giving back to the community. In the fall of 2009, members of FBD helped local resident, Carmen “Corky” Titus, by building a ramp and deck for his home. Titus was the FBD chapter’s first client. Titus suffers from a nerve condition that causes him to lose feeling to his limbs. He currently has no feelings from his knees to his toes, and is unable to walk more than 20 feet. Originally, FBD added a ramp and deck to the front of Titus’ home to allow him to live more independently. However, after seeing the struggle Titus had within his

home, the chapter decided to help renovate his kitchen for more mobility. Paul Flotterud is the current FBD chapter captain, and is in his fourth year at NDSU, majoring in architecture. Flotterud joined FBD as a sophomore and volunteered his time during the deck and ramp project. “With the ramp Titus overlooks the FBD members drawing up design documents for his kitchen. and deck completed, we noticed that he was barely able to get into his kitchen and was unable to turn around in the kitchen without hitting something,” says Flotterud. In the spring of 2010, the chapter started working behind the scenes on paperwork and drawings, and began building Freedom by Design con’t on pg 38

Framework for the Future

Framework for the Future is HBC’s long-term fundraising initiative to build the endowment fund to maintain current giving, support additional projects and provide for endowment growth. HBC hopes to become self-sustaining while also increasing its impact on the industry and community.

2011 Home Builders Care Scholarship Recipients

Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation awards scholarships each fall to students pursuing careers in the construction industry. High school students who are interested in attending Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M State-Moorhead) or North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in a construction program are eligible to apply. Post-secondary students at M State-Moorhead, Minnesota State University Moorhead, NDSCS and North Dakota State University who are members of a National Association of Home Builders affiliated student chapter are able to apply for scholarships. The NAHB Student Chapter program was developed to support students interested in the home building industry. Students enrolled in construction-related fields at high schools, techncial schools and universities can join an NAHB Student Chapter and become active on a local, state and national level. One benefit of belonging to an NAHB Student Chapter is the International Builders Show Residential Construction Management competition. Teams must complete and present the planning and marketing of a development for a four-year program, or scheduling and estimating a home for secondary and two-year programs.

High School Austin Fiechtner: $600

Austin is a senior at Wyndmere High School. He is the son of Randy and Marie Fiechtner. After graduation, Austin plans to attend NDSCS to pursue a degree in building construction technology. He has been involved in construction projects at school and enjoyed the process. After completing his education, Austin hopes to secure an apprenticeship with a builder.

Zachary Lively: $400

Zach is a senior at Fargo’s Davies High School. His parents are Robert and Rosanne Lively. Zach attended the 2011 Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades and currently works for Rokke Construction. He enjoys woodworking and doing projects around his house. Zach plans on attending M StateMoorhead after graduation and would eventually like to own a construction company.

Post-Secondary Minnesota State Community & Technical College-Moorhead Andrew Johnson: $500

Andrew is a second-year carpentry student at M State-Moorhead, originally from Pennock, Minn. His interest in construction began while working for his dad’s company since he was 14. This past summer, he worked at Blume Construction and would like to continue there after graduation. Andrew’s longterm goal is to move back to Pennock and work with his dad at the family business. Andrew is currently the president of M State-Moorhead’s student chapter and is working hard to plan the group’s trip to IBS.

John Lunde: $500

John, originally from Fargo, is a second-year carpentry student at M State-Moorhead. His perfect job after graduation would be with a cabinet shop as he loves building custom cabinets. John is currently the treasurer of the M State-Moorhead student chapter. He is a very active volunteer, participating in trips to Minot to help with flood recovery and with his church’s mission. He has also helped to build three homes for Habitat for Humanity.

North Dakota State University Samantha Crow: $600

Samantha is originally from Willmar, Minn. She is currently a junior at NDSU studying construction management. She is interested in staying in the Fargo-Moorhead area after graduation and working in the home building industry. Currently, Samantha is the NDSU student chapter vice president and has been working with other chapter leadership to increase their volunteer work. She is also participating in a team preparing for the residential construction management competition at IBS.

Ryan Doblar: $100

Ryan, originally from Lewiston, Minn., is a freshman at NDSU. He is studying construction management and enjoys working in the residential aspect of construction. Ryan plans on spending time getting to know the industry and gain experience. Eventually, he would like to own a construction company. Ryan is a new member of the student chapter and looks forward to getting involved.

He became interested in the construction industry while working for his parents helping to fix up their 100-year-old rental properties. Jarred, from Bismarck, N.D., is a junior at NDSU. He is currently studying construction engineering. Jarred plans on staying in the area after graduation and would like to work as a construction field engineer. He has been interested in the residential construction industry since early in his high school career. Jarred recently became a student chapter member after he transferred to NDSU from Bismarck State College. He is planning on becoming active and participating in the residential construction management competition.

Kyle Pederson: $100

Kyle is originally from Benson, Minn. and is a sophomore at NDSU. He No photo is studying construction management available. and hopes to secure a job in the region. Kyle worked for Bob McGeary Construction in Benson and has enjoyed learning the building process. He is a new member of the student chapter and joined the team for the residential construction management competition at IBS. He is also taking every opportunity to volunteer with the chapter.

North Dakota State College of Science Tiffany Ahmann: $300

Tiffany, originally from Mahnomen, Minn., is attending NDSCS and pursuing a drafting and estimating degree. She has always been interested in drafting and would love to work in that field after graduation. Eventually, she hopes to work at her family’s construction firm. This past summer, Tiffany worked for Accent Contracting. She is also an active member of the student chapter and participates in the residential construction management competition at IBS.

Casey is from Grafton, N.D., and is currently in his second year at NDSCS. He plans to graduate in 2012 with an associate’s degree in architectural drafting and estimating techology and in construction management. After graduation, Casey would like to work in the Fargo-Moorhead area, specifically as an estimator, in order to stay close to family. As a student chapter member, Casey has been active in the competition team for the residential construction management competition at IBS. He is also the president of the club this year.

Minnesota State University Moorhead Taylor Aakre : $400

Taylor, from Hawley, Minn., is a senior at MSUM and would like to work as a field engineer or project manager after graduation. He is especially interested in sustainable construction methods. Taylor has worked for Fargo Electric Construction for the past two years. He is active in the MSUM student chapter, working on the IBS competition team and volunteering on projects.

Dominic is originally from Milbank, S.D., and is a senior at MSUM. He also spent three years at NDSCS pursuing his associate’s degree in architectural drafting and estimating technology. Member of the Month: Diana Stead, Stone Holding Company by Kirsten Rosenow, Communication & Office Coordinator

Diana Stead, Stone Holding Company, has been involved with HBA of F-M committees for the last four years, currently serving on both the Remodelers Council and the Events Committee. Stead first became involved with the HBA by working for a member company in 1990, primarily for insurance benefits. In 2007, Stone Holding Company joined Jennifer McKinney, HBA membership coordinator and the HBA, and Stead has Alison Streyle, events coordinator, present Diana Stead, enjoyed being involved Stone Holding Company with the December Member of the Month award. with all the Association has to offer. “Being involved is the only credible way to grow in knowledge of what is going on in the building industry and creating the relationships that I need to continue a job that is enjoyable to show up for! Besides, it’s fun!” says Stead. She values the educational programs available for members, the industry networking, as well as the friends she has made through the Association. “When I needed help sandbagging it was the fellowship of HBA that showed up and supported my family,” says Stead. The staff chose Stead for the December Member of the Month because of her enthusiasm and dedication to both of the committees she serves on. “She is always willing to help out no matter what or how big the job might be,” says Jennifer McKinney, HBA membership coordinator. Stead was also chosen for her willingness to get involved and her encouragement for other members to do the same. “Diana is always volunteering and I am so appreciative. mandates that will be difficult to achieve without trading programs. Spanning eight states, the Ohio River Basin trading program is being put together by a collection of partner organizations to improve the hypoxic (low oxygen) zone in the Gulf of Mexico. The program is being developed to sell credits for nitrogen and phosphorous discharges, and greenhouse gas emission reductions. Home builders are not being considered as trading participants in the program at this time. Under the Chesapeake Bay TMDL, large portions of six states and all of Washington, D.C., face a strict new rule to reduce nutrients and sediments into the bay. Although water quality trading will be critical to lowering the costs of what is expected to be the most expensive water quality rule ever developed, the affected states have just begun to consider the advantages of trading. Creation of a robust trading program for the bay clearly faces many hurdles, but without trading, it will be extremely difficult to meet some of the requirements under the new rule.

Seeking builder feedback

The EPA, the states and NAHB have all endorsed the market-based concept of allowing permit holders to purchase water quality or water quantity credits generated from storm water best management practices on farms or other properties in order to comply with storm water regulations. NAHB is seeking feedback from home builders who are currently participating in a water quality trading program or others interested in discussing the potential of trading as a way to reduce costs and provide regulatory flexibility to home builders. the cabinets for the kitchen on Dec. 2, 2010. Although they were unsuccessful in getting funds from the Pepsi Refresh Grant, FBD created their first annual Mobility for Mobility 5k fun run/walk to raise money to complete the kitchen project. “We were not very well-known in the community, as we had just started, so it was challenging to get funding for such a huge project,” says Flotterud. FBD worked NDSU’s Freedom by Design chapter spent closely with John a year designing and completing its first Gunkelman, kitchen project. Dakota Construction of Fargo, Inc., who serves as their construction mentor, to get tools and materials. Gunkelman also helped the students on design documents and the construction process. In December of 2010, the chapter had the kitchen up-and-running, and installed back-splash and trim pieces at the end of January. After a year of paperwork, fundraising and construction, FBD finished the kitchen project on Feb. 5, 2011. “It is challenging to balance work, school and this organization, but the reward of seeing Corky’s reaction Carmen “Corky” Titus in his kitchen that was remodeled by FBD students. to his ramp and kitchen makes it all worthwhile to me and all the volunteers,” says Flotterud. Through these projects, Flotterud and the FBD chapter created a strong relationship with Titus and his family, and they consider him one of their biggest advocates for their program. “As captain, I hope we will have many more clients like Corky and that the work we have done for him will inspire other colleges to start programs like this,” says Flotterud. Currently, the FBD chapter is working with Jane Schank, who runs an in-home daycare for children with disabilities. The chapter has partnered with the city of Fargo’s housing rehab department to build a ramp and deck for her, similar to the one they built for Titus and his family. “We are still learning how to make the process smoother and more efficient to better serve our community in the Fargo-Moorhead area,” says Flotterud.
