HBA of F-M President’s Message HBA recaps priorities for 2013
We have also added regular “service spotlight” segments at board and committee meetings to give engaged members tools to promote the HBA and its services to potential members and current members who are not involved.
2013 has been a pivotal year as the HBA of F-M began developing a new strategic plan focused on its future as a membership organization, and how its services mesh with upcoming Darrick Guthmiller Generation X and Y business leaders. Kochmann Brothers The planning session for this was Homes, Inc. facilitated by a professional who is intune nationwide with the membership issues non-profits and membership organizations face. Over the summer and into the fall, your HBA board and staff have been working on finalizing a purpose statement, vision, challenges/solutions, goals and its list of objectives and 90-day targets. The plan will address the Association’s overall marketing strategy to current members, potential members and consumers for its public events, as well as overall membership growth, education, public affairs and administrative issues.
Membership
Public affairs
Members are the heart of our Association, and this year’s goal was to recruit 80 new companies into the Association (30 Builders and 50 Associates). Our member retention rate goal was 92 percent. As of now, the Association has recruited 56 new members (18 Builders and 39 Associates) and our retention rate is 91.1 percent. It’s our hope to keep regaining ground with one member-approval opportunity left in December. We have been hearing that everyone is so busy, it’s hard to get the paperwork done to join! If you have leads of industry-related companies that may be interested in belonging to the HBA, please contact the office at (701) 232-5846. The New Member Development and Retention Committee has made Builder member recruitment a priority and will continue to target Builder members as we recruit to the Association. With the help of the new strategic plan we hope to start implementing specific ways to target builder member engagement through committee involvement. Through the orientation process for new members, Membership Coordinator Allison Weckman has encouraged committee involvement while also targeting long-time members to join a committee.
Win a free year of membership
Your HBA tracks its members who pay dues before the month of renewal. These members go into a drawing for a free year of dues. ($450 value!) For example, if your membership is paid through Jan. 31, 2014, you would need to pay your dues before Jan. 1, 2014, to be entered. Contact Amanda Ohlsen at (701) 232-5846 or amanda@hbafm.com with any questions.

The biggest issue facing the area continues to be flooding: both the actual event of flooding in the spring and the strain that the threat of flooding puts on consumer confidence. The HBA has continued to support and work for permanent flood protection for the metro-wide area. This includes all issues pertaining to flood insurance, a federal requirement for many homes in the region. HBA leaders were involved with the National Association of Home Builders in its lobbying efforts to introduce legislation revising the Biggert Waters Act. The HBA was also invited to the table when U.S. Sen. Hoeven brought FEMA leaders to Fargo to discuss the basement exception for Base Flood Elevations. We have provided expert evidence on not only the strict standards by which we engineer and build flood proof basements, but also on the highly detrimental effect that losing the exception would have on our communities. We are working with the Builders Association of Minnesota to put forward a pro-housing agenda at the state legislature and fight fire sprinkler mandates. Involvement with both state associations’ legislative efforts remains high as members participated in their capitol activities this year. We can always do better and engage more members. If you are interested in politics and giving your industry a voice, contact Public Affairs Coordinator Mike Obach at (701) 232-5846. Staff and members worked with the city of Fargo on its adoption of the 2012 International Residential Code and assisted the North Dakota Association of Builders with North Dakota’s adoption of the code. It’s our goal to develop the safest, most cost-effective building standards that allow the industry to continue building high quality, affordable homes. Due to our efforts, both the city of Fargo and the state of North Dakota have decided to sustain the current 2009 chapter of the energy code and not adopt the more stringent and expensive 2012 version, which could add upwards of $10,000 to the cost of a home, but wouldn’t be realized in savings for over 40 years. Sheinkopf began as a pre-teen model before his career moved him into television where he starred on Falcon Crest and the Disney movie Newsies. Soon enough, he found that designing and building pieces filled a void in his life and he began building sets for commercials and music videos, which let to art direction and set design. He eventually started his own company building high-end custom pieces for celebrity clientele. He continued to pursue something that was a combination of acting and his building passion and eventually landed his role on Design on a Dime. It’s been an honor to serve the North Dakota Association of Builders as president. Thank you for the Jason Eid NDAB President opportunity. As this year comes to a Eid-Co Buildings, Inc. close, I wish incoming president Ken Callahan, Montana Dakota Utilities, the best of luck, and look forward to seeing where this great organization will continue to grow in 2014. 2013 was transitional as we turned the page on another legislative session and said good-bye to Executive Officer Doreen Riedman and Communications Manager Stacey Lang. With the office unstaffed, NDAB’s senior officers have been relying on local association EOs and staff to help with NDAB’s operations and take care of business until a new EO was hired. Thank you to everyone who stepped up. Also, thank you to those members who served on the EO search committee. NDAB leaders and I appreciate the time you took away from your busy schedule to assist. I am very happy to announce that Kim Schneider starts in that executive officer role Dec. 2! Kim lives in Bismarck with her husband, Jasper, and their four children. In her prior position with the North Dakota chapter of the American Lung Association, Kim has lobbying experience, oversaw ALA’s operations in North Dakota and represented its interests on the local, state and federal levels. She worked closely with the legislature and the Secretary of State’s office on different issues including licensing and ballot initiatives. Please call her or send her an email in December to extend a warm welcome and look for an introduction from her in January’s NDAB News.
Highlights from 2013:
• In the legislative session, NDAB: - Encouraged the Legislature to support the funding of the Housing Incentive Fund at the $50 million level proposed by Gov. Dalrymple. - Supported the F-M Area Diversion Project that will provide $450 million in state funds for permanent

As elections resulted in new faces and new ideas, the HBA continues to build relationships and study new ways to partner with the cities to better our community.
PAC
NDAB-PAC provides a critical piece of our Association’s advocacy efforts. Our fundraising goal for this year is $20,000 and we are closing in, with over $17,000 raised. We always strive for high dollar amounts in PAC fundraising, but it’s also important to increase the overall number of members contributing; this year we had almost 50 new contributors compared to 2012. We also hosted four Candidate Forums for elections in the city of Moorhead.

Winter reminders for storm water
Freezing cold weather is here, so there’s no need to worry about storm water, right? Wrong! Here are some tips from Fargo and West Fargo for winter: Although Silt fence and devices Stella Stormwater EPA Storm Water such as the drop-in or pop-up inlet Enthusiast protection are effective for the management of sediment, they can pose problems for practices such as snow removal. It is recommended that such devices, when located on the street side, be removed by Nov. 1 each year. These devices or suitable alternates may need to be reinstalled in the spring to capture snowmelt runoff. West Fargo also recommends removing straw wattles to avoid damage by snow plows. The owner/operator is still responsible to maintain effective control of sediment and other pollutants during the winter season. It is recommended that you stop landdisturbing activities until warm weather returns. Establish a stable access point and stockpile gravel to maintain access during winter season. If new land disturbances need to occur, they must be stabilized immediately. Keep a stockpile of sandbags and other erosion control devices to manage situations that need immediate attention.

Local building officials, members meet for roundtable by Mike Obach, Public Affairs Coordinator
HBA of F-M members had the opportunity to discuss an assortment of issues and concerns with building officials from our four local communities. Executive Vice President Bryce Johnson faciliated a luncheon in October featuring Mark Housh, Moore Engineering (West Fargo); Steve Schroeder (Dilworth); Bruce Taralson (Fargo); and Kurt Wenzel (Moorhead). The officials shared the current state of housing and development for their respective communities, and discussed current codes and upcoming changes that will soon be in place. They each touched on key code issues that they had observed, then took time to answer specific questions from the attendees. Questions ranged from ideas on establishing uniformity across the four communities and two states; foundation building and work site cleanliness; storm water containment and cleaning procedures; and many other more specific issues. There was a question about the likelihood of Minnesota following Wisconsin’s lead and moving to a six-year code cycle, as well as concerns shared regarding improper fastening of flashing, even in newer homes, which had led
to a variety of nuisance leaks. Johnson also asked for some insight into the ever-present fire sprinkler issue currently under debate in Minnesota. The HBA and its members are grateful for the opportunity to have such a positive discourse with these local officials. If you have any questions about the meeting or would like information on any upcoming events, please contact Public Affairs Coordinator Mike Obach at (701) 232-5846 or mike@hbafm.com.

David Mitchell wows the crowd with interactive communication styles by Alison Streyle, Events Coordinator
HBA of F-M members who attended “The Power of Understanding People,” on Nov. 7 experienced a laugh-out-loud, info-filled keynote presentation describing the various communication styles people utilize and how to interact with those who have a different style than their own. Sponsored by Choice Financial; Fiebiger, Swanson, West & Co.; and Hirshfield’s Paints and Coatings, the afternoon’s events catered to almost 100 HBA members. Also, a big thank you to Avitus Group who helped in bringing David Mitchell to Fargo! Mitchell, founder of Leadership Difference, had all attendees complete an assessment which categorized them as one of four different types of communicators: Romantics, Warriors, Experts or Masterminds. Mitchell then explained the tendencies of each style when interacting with someone of the same type, as well as someone of the complete opposite type: For example, how a Romantic deals with a Warrior. Everyone in attendance was very engaged and participated in revealing their communication style. The social afterwards provided hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar where attendees could continue discussing the different styles and how they are prominent in day-to-day work environments. Everyone had something to take away that is relevant in their daily lives. The HBA has a copy of Mitchell’s presentation and assessment available to share with any members that are interested. Please contact Events Coordinator Alison Streyle at 701-232-5846 or alison@hbafm.com.

HBA of F-M Builder Member Feature ISR Homes
Building, renting new homes for more than 30 years by Mariah Wenaas, Communications & Office Coordinator
Dan Parrow grew up working alongside his father, Harold, in the construction industry. Parrow’s father founded ISR Homes in the early 1980s. The company, originally called Interstate Roofing Construction, initially focused on residential re-roofing and small remodeling projects. Parrow is now the owner of ISR Homes, and the company specializes in building new homes, mostly rentals. Aside from his construction background, Parrow also has a degree in marketing from Minnesota State Community & Technical College. ISR Homes is Dan Parrow committed to building quality homes. Parrow says, “We look for premium locations and add amenities that you would not normally find in rental properties.” ISR Homes also has a new design that it began building this fall, the Kingwood 2. The new design features over 1,525 sq. ft. all on one level. You can see a rendering of the new design to the right. The industry is not without its challenges. “One of the biggest challenges facing the industry today is how fast our local building industry has recovered. Because of this, we are seeing record permit values, which has put a strain on some of the sub-contractors, since there is a lot of work for them to choose from on both the local and state level,”
says Parrow. Despite these challenges, Parrow does enjoy working with sub-contractors. Parrow has known of the HBA of F-M’s existence for as long as he can remember. In 2005-2006, he started researching building homes and took a closer look at the HBA. He saw the Association as a valuable resource in expanding his business and networking with other contractors. Parrow is a very active member of the HBA. He joined the the Home Builders Care Scholarship committee in 2006 and has been a part of that ever since then. He has also been on the HBC board of trustees, the HBA’s charitable arm, since 2008 and will be vice president in 2014. To those wanting to start their own business in the industry, Parrow advises that you understand the value of quality. “If working with sub-contractors, make sure there is a good line of communication. Marketing is also very important. In years past, marketing was the ability to grab someone’s attention. Today, you have to be able to grab the attention, and keep the attention. There are so many tools for helping to keep the attention of your potential customers, but the key is in finding ISR Homes what tool works PO Box 515 best for your Moorhead, MN, 56561 company. They can download movies on demand into their video system, access their personal audio-video library, lock/unlock doors, view their property’s surveillance cameras, and even control their lighting and thermostats from anywhere in the world! “Imagine uploading your favorite cd, song or movie once and having it with you wherever you go, including your main residence, lake home, vacation house, or even sitting at the airport!”
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the industry today and how are you dealing with it?
“Internet sales and big box stores. At TrinSpin, we pride ourselves in being a turn-key solution for our clients. We start by meeting with our clients, whether that’s on-site, at a restaurant/coffee house or in our office. We review their blueprints and analyze the site to determine proper acoustics, layout, lighting and other variables that will affect the quality of the end product. Based on our 25 years of experience, we then design a product that is tailor-made to the client’s wishes. “We work with a wide variety of clients ranging from a single-family to multi-state corporations. We enjoy designing, creating and implementing a quality product that others say couldn’t be done. Our workmanship, work ethic and customer service is second to none. “TrinSpin will work with you every step of the way, regardless of your budget, project size or location. We’ll provide you with an individually designed product and a peace of mind you won’t get with an internet or big box sale.”

It was established with funds donated by HBA members, fundraising events and the HBA itself. The purpose for its creation was to provide an outlet for the builder, remodeler, and companies related to the building industry to show the community that there is more to the building industry than demolition, construction, and remodeling. The HBA of F-M handles the administrative duties for the foundation at no charge. Any contribution designated to the foundation goes directly to the foundation and its charitable work.

HBC finishes off 2013 Home Builders Care celebrated its 20th anniversary this year and it was exciting to review all of its major accomplishments. HBC has: • Awarded $168,688 in scholarship dollars since 1995 • Supported 204 students through scholarships over the past 20 years • Made donations of $203,662 to area organizations over the past 20 years • Given $646,106 to support a variety of housing-related projects This year, we sat down and evaluated who we are as an organization and who we want to be in the future. One of the major concerns we are hearing from the industry is lack of workforce. Home Builders Care is looking into how we can help to provide skilled labor for all areas of our industry. We would be interested to hear your needs and concerns and any ideas that you might have to help increase interest in the construction industry. Currently, we support the Health, Tech & Trades Career Expo and the Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades as ways to recruit and encourage students to join the industry. We are always looking for increased industry participation in these events. Students become far more interested in our industry when working directly with contractors and experiencing hands-on activities. If you would like to become involved with workforce development, please contact Jenny Erickson at (701) 232-5846 or jenny@hbafm.com. The Health, Tech & Trades Career Expo is coming up Dec. 12 and is a great event to promote construction careers to area ninth graders. The HBA of F-M and HBC will have a booth promoting the industry and helping students to learn how to correctly use power tools. In addition, we have industry representation from concrete, electrical, large equipment and carpenters, but many more are needed. There is still time to exhibit, so if you are in need of workforce and want to start recruiting early, contact Erickson at (701) 232-5846 or jenny@hbafm. com. HBC just awarded its annual fall scholarships Nov. 14. Learn more about our student winners on pages 30-31. I am proud to report that students from NDSU and MSUM attended the Associated Schools of Construction annual conference and competed in four divisions: commercial, design-build, heavy-highway and residential construction. They used real plans and specifications and, over an 18-hour period, they had to run through a project planning phase. Our local schools did very well! NDSU placed first in the design-build division, second in residential and third in heavy highway. MSUM placed first in heavy highway. Home Builders Care and the HBA are sponsoring a build for Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity in 2014. We will be sponsoring the first-ever official Veteran Build in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Watch for more information in January and February about the build. Mark your calendars for the 51st annual Fargo Motor Patrol Fish Fry, Feb. 7. This is sure to be a great event with wonderful food and a variety of auction items. Tickets will be available soon at the HBA office. Contact Erickson if you would like to buy tickets. As you consider making year-end donations, please think of Home Builders Care. We are the foundation of the industry and are working hard to provide a positive outlet for the industry to give back to the community! And finally, I would like to thank you all for a wonderful year. It has been my pleasure to serve as President of HBC and I am proud of what we have accomplished this year. Good luck to Mike Anderson, Bierschbach Equipment & Supply, who will be the HBC President in 2014!

Get involved! The HBA of F-M always welcomes new committee members. Evey idea contributes to the betterment of the Association. It’s never to late too get involved. Thank you to all those who have been involved with a committee this year. A list of all committee members can be found to the right. Thank you for your support! Contact Allison Weckman at (701) 232-5846 or allisonw@hbafm.com and find the best fit for you!
Consider joining a committee in 2014!
Whether you are a new member or have been a member for years, there is no time like the present to get involved in your Association. The HBA has a number of committees to choose from so you can find one that meets your interests as well as your schedule. Most committees meet only once a month for an hour. Committee involvement is a great way to meet new people and grow those relationships. Dustin Murray, Dustin Murray Construction, joined the HBA in November 2012 and joined a committee right away. He found that not only did he meet new people, but he learned more about what the HBA does. Murray was named to the 2014 board of directors and looks forward to being even more involved in the HBA. Speaking of the board of directors, if you have any interest in serving on the board some day, we do encourage you to join a committee first as the nominating committee looks for members who have committee experience. “I was asked by an active member to attend a meeting, so I decided to check it out. I found that the group appreciated my input, so I’ve kept coming. I was first exposed to the HBA when I was active in the National Association of Home Builders’ Student Chapter during college. I know that being active allows you to get the most out of your membership, make contacts and stay on top of changes in our industry. I enjoy being part of the process, meeting more people and building relationships that will help me in my business down the road.” - Dustin Murray, Dustin Murray Construction

Tampering with tapering
While Q4 GDP growth will probably be about 2.4 percent, slightly above the average rate of growth since the end of the Great Recession, it would be very surprising if the Federal Reserve Board (the Fed) Elliot Eisenberg, were to begin reducing its monthly Ph.D., GraphsandLaughs, purchases of $45 billion in Treasuries and $40 billion in mortgage-backed LLC securities anytime soon. While there are many reasons why, the most potent is that the mere suggestion last June that tapering might commence as early as mid-September rattled markets enough to raise interest rates on 30-year home mortgages by close to 11/2 percent in a matter of weeks, and in the process stop forward progress in the housing market dead in its tracks. The housing market is crucial to the recovery because with auto sales and manufacturing activity having all but returned to pre-recession levels, construction activity in general and its biggest component, new single family residential activity, is the last large cyclical sector not fully participating in the economic recovery. To have a selfsustaining recovery it is essential for all cyclical sectors to be at or near full capacity or rapidly moving in that direction. In addition to a flat housing market, the labor market is showing signs of slowing down. During the first quarter of 2013, job creation averaged 207,000 per month, while it was 182,000 per month in the second quarter but just 143,000 per month in the third quarter. Worse, while the unemployment rate has been steadily falling since the end of the Great Recession, it has been primarily thanks to the steady decline in the labor force participation rate (LFPR) from 65.5 percent at the end of the recession to just 63.2 percent today, the first time ever that the LFPR has declined after the end of a recession. Storm water con’t from page 17
Here are some reminders from Moorhead: • All construction sites must remain in compliance throughout the winter even if no construction is occurring. • Silt fence should be in proper working order for minor thaws and spring snowmelt to prevent the transport of sediment to surface waters. • Move bio-rolls back 2 feet from the curb line and place tall orange stakes so that they are visible to the snowplow drivers. • Stabilize exposed soil with sod, mulch or erosion control blankets. • Remove dandy bags from street inlets.
34
The above notwithstanding, the economy is really recovering. Household deleveraging is almost over, manufacturing and transportation activity have recovered to pre-recession levels, banks are once again healthy, corporate and household balance sheets have recovered and employment is almost back to where it was before the recession began. Given how far the economy has come, I think the Fed would prefer to essentially “buy” some downside economic insurance by continuing their current level of Treasury and MBS purchases. Something that would change my prediction will be the success or failure of the congressional budget negotiations that were part of the deal to end the two week government closure. Lawmakers have a deadline of Dec. 13 to produce a budget blueprint that will drive government spending for FY2014. The deadline is just days before the Fed’s last meeting of the year. A congressional deal would give the Fed some clarity on the fiscal front, and undoubtedly hasten the date of the first taper. On the other hand, negotiations that end in stalemate would increase fiscal uncertainty and reduce government spending by leaving sequestration in place, thereby reducing GDP growth. In short, the economy is currently growing, but slowly. As a result, the labor force participation rate continues to decline, employment growth is weak, and due to poor Fed communication about interest rates, the all-important housing market has stopped growing. For all these reasons, the Fed may give lip service to the idea of commencing tapering following its mid-December meeting, but any tapering is more likely to start after its end of January meeting, and most likely following the Fed’s mid-March meeting, the first in 2014 to be followed by a press conference. And remember, short term rates will remain at their current rock bottom levels for another 18 months. Elliot Eisenberg, Ph.D. is president of GraphsandLaughs, LLC and can be reached at elliot@ graphsandlaughs.net. His daily 70-word economics and policy blog can be seen at www.econ70.com.
NDSU students con’t from page 29
They look forward to input from the residential construction industry. If any companies are interested in supporting the NDSU Student Chapter, please contact Jenny Erickson at (701) 232-5846 or jenny@hbafm.com. NDSU recently traveled to the Associated Schools of Construction annual conference and competed in the different construction areas of commercial, design-build, heavy highway and residential. NDSU teams took first place in design-build, second place in residential and third place in heavy-highway. Judd participated in the commercial division and his team took sixth. Judd says, “My goals for the Student Chapter this year are to gain more members, help students meet fellow classmates through social outings, provide students with the opportunity to experience the residential construction industry in Fargo-Moorhead and give back to the community through service projects in the area.” When asked how the industry could be more involved with the chapter, Judd said, “I think it would be great to see companies from the industry show students around some of the projects that are currently underway and what goes on in the offices. Fargo is a great location to see a growing industry and I believe that many students would become interested in pursuing residential construction if they saw what thriving companies are working on.”

What’s new with the HBA staff? Jenny Erickson
Jenny is busy getting ready to host Thanksgiving at her house this year. While she has loved the fall weather, she is looking forward to snow shoeing and other winter sports. Part of why she is ready for winter is that she is planning a trip to Puerto Rico in March!
Bryce Johnson
Bryce Johnson and her family (led by Wade) have been fitting in Bison football and tailgating when they can. Hannah is involved in competitive soccer and basketball along with piano, choir, chimes and cello. With Izzy being a BIG-girl kindergartner now, every day is full of adventure and laughter. Izzy finished up soccer season and is determined to do everything her big sisters do (including Jenna, who is studying pharmacy), so there is a lot of basketball dribbling and new songs flowing off the piano keys (but the cello is off limits!). She loves seeing Hannah in the hallways of school and on the playground each day.
Krista Mund
Krista and her family got their fill of soccer this fall with Annie and Noelle playing on competitive and rec teams (respectively), and Paul serving as their team manager and coaching! Noelle has started basketball and Annie continues to get the hang of middle school and the clarinet. The whole family is enjoying their house which feels like new after an update of the kitchen and master bathroom.
Mike Obach
Mike and his (much) better half, Kelly, enjoyed spending their summer and fall on the lakes. Their winter will consist of holiday/hunting road trips to International Falls and Dickinson, so they are busy praying that gas prices stay down.
Amanda Ohlsen
Amanda and her husband, Tyler, are busy getting ready to welcome their second child in December and preparing their 21/2 year old daughter, Kaylee, to be a big sister. Kaylee is enjoying getting back into Kindermusik and gymnastics this fall.
Alison Streyle
Alison is finally done with wedding season, but is already planning for six next year. No, none are her own yet. She has been busy doing DIY home decor projects to fill her walls and has also been doing a few fall 5K races. She is contemplating training for a half marathon next June, but so far has only purchased a new pair of shoes for it. The miles will hopefully start in early spring. She is excited for the holiday season and having her entire family home for the holidays, including a sister from Chicago and a sister and brother-in-law from Spain.
Allison Weckman
Allison completed her last race of the season at the Sandy’s Donut 5K in November. It was her seventh 5K or 10K race in 2013. She, her husband Kory, and 3 year old son, Nolan, enjoyed trick-or-treating in their new neighborhood this year. They are enjoying starting Nolan in swimming lessons. Allison and her husband are also expecting their second child in June.
Mariah Wenaas
Mariah and her husband, Ryan, purchased their first house in July and have been busy making it feel like a home. They’ve enjoyed painting, decorating and making it their own. She is looking forward to hanging lights and decorating the house for Christmas.
The HBA of F-M staff loves Halloween! This year they dressed up as an awkward school photo; a beer keg; a college student; a ninja; Juno; a ketchup fairy; Medusa; and an old bat!

She is a proud UND graduate! She reads the Plains Builder front to back every month. She grew up in Devils Lake, N.D. She is closing in on her one-year anniversary at the HBA.
HBA tip: Google yourself, your company
Do you ever “Google” yourself? Do it once in awhile: type your name and your company into an Internet search browser and review what is posted about you and your business online. You may be surprised at what you find. One HBA member contacted the office with this tip because she found less-than-accurate information on a website touting itself as a consumer “rating” resource for building industry companies. You have the power to control what people read about you on the Internet.
Here’s your chance to host a seminar during the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show... For only $1,000, your company can have the unique opportunity to host one seminar throughout the course of the show. Your sponsorship includes recognition on seminar signage during the show, recognition in the show program and guides, and recognition in the Plains Builder. Don’t miss this opportunity! HBA to offer lead paint certified renovator training in March, refresher courses in early 2015 The HBA of F-M will offer Environmental Protection Agency Remodeling, Renovation & Painting (RRP) Rule certified renovator training in March through the University of North Dakota’s Environmental Training Institute. To satisfy requirements by the U.S. EPA, building and remodeling firms must have one or more certified renovators assigned to each job where paint is disturbed in homes built in 1978 or earlier. Eight hours of training is required to become a “certified renovator.” Also, Minnesota requires lead certification when issuing permits. Municipalities verify lead certification for residential builders, remodelers, roofers and manufactured home installers when requesting a permit to work on homes constructed prior to 1978. Watch future communications on March’s training date and cost, or contact Mariah Wenaas at (701) 2325846 or mariah@hbafm.com to be contacted when details are finalized. A four-hour refresher course every five years is required to keep the Certified Renovator designation current. Since the HBA first hosted Certified Renovator classes in early 2010, the Association will offer its first refresher classes staring January 2015. The National Association of Home Builders also has a number of resources to help its members comply with the lead paint rule.
