Q&A with seminar presenter By JoAnn Ohma |The Forum
C
ass County Extension Agent Todd Weinmann will present on two topics at the 2012 Fall Home Show on Friday, Sept. 28, covering fall garden cleanup and planting and care for garlic, tulips and other hardy bulbs. Weinmann took some time to answer a few questions and give some insight on what he’ll talk about during his sessions. What are common mistakes people make when winterizing their gardens? They tend to leave tomato, pepper, potato and eggplant stalks, vines with rotting fruit in them. Will this year’s drought make a difference in the timing of winterization? It may need to be done
earlier; many plants will be done growing earlier, and many will go dormant earlier. Are there certain plants that grow well in our climate that maybe can’t be grown as successfully elsewhere, and why? Rhubarb and tulips because they need a cold period to flower and grow vigorously. Are there any certain types of plants that you enjoy growing or would consider your area of expertise? Container gardens – they’re an area I’ve done extensive work with, and I have studied what other professionals have done with them. What’s growing in your personal garden? Beans, peas, potatoes, eggplant and tomatoes – they
3
TODD WEINMANN all grow well here, and they are some of my favorites.
Without giving away the answer, is there a tip or trick that you’ll give people during your seminars that they’ll be surprised by? I’ll give people a trick for repotting plants without having soil spill out of the bottom holes. Weinmann will take questions from the audience during each of his seminars, so bring your gardening dilemmas to the Civic Center to get them solved. For more information on Weinmann’s seminars and the other show seminars, see page 7.

JOEL KARSTEN’S
N
o matter how much space you have in your backyard, Joel Karsten has ideas for outdoor rooms that will make you wish you never had to go back inside. Karsten, who is a horticulturist, landscape Joel Karsten designer and author, grew his love for the outdoors and for design as a child on a tree farm near Worthington, Minn. In addition to his horticulture background, he also has an education in design.
“I think that makes me unique in that many times you run into landscape architects that don’t have a horticulture background,” says Karsten, “so they can design stuff very nicely, but will the plants grow in the way they’ve designed it?” Karsten will present three seminars on Saturday, Sept. 29. One will focus on year-round composting, one will highlight the benefits of landscape lighting, and one will showcase how to create an outdoor room, including an element he’s very passionate about: the outdoor fireplace. “I think (the outdoor fireplace) is becoming more and more popular,” says Karsten. “And particularly for
northern climates. This is a real key element in outdoor room design that can make or break your outdoor room.” If you think you have your outdoor heating needs covered because you have a fire pit, Karsten urges you to think again. “Fire pits come with lots of pitfalls,” says Karsten. “Smoke turns around from the fire and gets in your face – someone is always getting smoke in their face. When you have a fireplace, there’s a chimney, so there’s no wandering smoke – and no smell of smoke getting into your clothes.” Due to their design, fireplaces also put out more

designs bring indoor spaces outside heat than a fire pit, allowing people to enjoy their outdoor spaces longer into the winter season. Don’t think an outdoor room is out of reach due to your small yard size. “Just because we’re creating an outdoor room doesn’t mean it has to be a room for 20 people,” says Karsten. “It could be a room for two people.” Karsten explains that an outdoor room needs three things: a floor, the illusion of walls and the illusion of a ceiling or an actual ceiling. “That can be as simple as defining a specific area of grass as your floor with some type of plant border,” says Karsten. “And then the ceiling could be defined by an umbrella on a table. The walls could be defined by containers or pots with taller plants in them.
“So you can create an intimate, comfortable feeling in a small space without a lot of building blocks or construction. In the same way that we create intimacy inside the home by arranging our furniture in a certain way, we can create the intimacy outside. “Even if you have a very small space, you can still accomplish a lot in terms of good design to make that space more inviting and more comfortable.” Check out Karsten’s Creating an Outdoor Room seminar on Saturday, Sept. 29, to gather ideas for creating your own outdoor living space. Accent Kitchen & Bath presents: A COMPLETE BATHROOM TRANSFORMATION
From dated to timeless T
BEFORE

his beautiful bathroom was remodeled in 2012. The customers approached Accent Kitchen & Bath, planning to do some of the work themselves. Accent works with clients regularly who want to handle certain parts of the project or hire specific licensed trades. Permits are required to be taken out for plumbing, electrical and mechanical, so it is especially important to be on top of that. The homeowners found the larger tub to be wasteful of water, inefficient and definitely out of style. This is very common among homes built in the ’80s and ’90s. Many people remove the tubs altogether in the master suites. Very few larger tubs are used anymore. This is partially because many of us live busy lifestyles. This bathroom features timeless natural stone, heated floors, a beautiful vanity with dual linen towers, a hanging chandelier, vaulted ceilings, a water-saving toilet and a relaxing claw-foot tub. An average bathroom remodel such as this takes about 45 days to complete, depending on structural modifications. Prices vary widely based on many factors. Accent’s average master suite sells for $25,000, depending on amenities. Check out Accent Kitchen & Bath’s seminars on Kitchen and Bathroom Trends for 2012 at the Fall Home Show! Home Builders Care build for Habitat provides home for single mother with two children
F
ostering homeownership is one of the Home Builders Association of F-M’s cornerstones. This summer, the HBA of F-M, Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation and Remodelers Council sponsored the building of a Habitat for Humanity home at 902 27th St. N. in Fargo for April Nelson and her children, Brooke and Blake. It was the Association’s first sponsorship of a build with Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity. Nelson looks forward to the stability that owning a home will offer her family. She was in an abusive relationship and moved to a shelter for a period of time to escape the violence. “It is amazing. One of my biggest dreams has been to own my house. We have had to move so much. My daughter has been in five different schools,” she says. Nelson has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and depression, her daughter suffers from anxiety, and her son has ADHD, anxiety and cerebral
D
palsy. Nelson says some of the mental health issues are lingering after-effects of the domestic violence they suffered. The home is handicap-accessible to help accommodate her son’s disability. In a few years, doctors say he will be a candidate for a surgery called dorsal rhizotomy to help increase elasticity in his legs, but the procedure will leave him wheelchair-bound for about one year. The house is undergoing certification at the bronze level through the National Association of Home Builders Green program and will be the first home of this kind in the F-M area. A threebedroom rambler, the home has more than 1,600 square feet on two levels. HBA of F-M members also constructed a detached garage. As of press time, the House Blessing Ceremony was slated for the end of September with the family set to move in shortly thereafter. Check out www.hbcfm.com or www.facebook.com/ HomeBuildersCare for more details and updates.

The Remodelers Council is a committee of the Home Builders Association of F-M that deals with issues affecting the remodeling segment of the building industry. The Council was formed in 1990 and assists in planning and coordinating the Fall Home Show. Council members regularly lend their efforts to charitable projects and build two to three wheelchair accessibility ramps a year. They also built bunk beds for the Gladys Ray Shelter. This summer, the Council, along with the HBA of F-M and the Home Builders Care of FargoMoorhead Foundation, sponsored a Habitat for Humanity home in Fargo for a single mother and her two children. The Council’s other major project was the RENEW (Restoring Existing Neighborhoods for Everyone’s Well-being) Home, a 100-year-old home that was renovated and sold to an incomeeligible family. The Council teamed up with HBC and the HBA of F-M membership to remodel the home at 923 5th Ave. S. in Fargo.
