WALL WIZARD presents workshop at Fall Home Show By Emma Heaton
“We all think we know how to paint, but has anyone ever taught you how to paint?” Whether you are a DIYer or a painting expert, San Francisco native Brian Santos, also known as “The Wall Wizard,” gives insight in his “edutainment” workshops that you may not have even know you were missing. A fourth-generation painting contractor and chemist, he has demonstrated at more than 5,000 home decorating workshops, providing home improvement inspiration with paint, paper and fabric. Santos has appeared at workshops for industry leaders like Sherwin Williams, Home Depot and Lowe’s. Santos says the most surprising thing for people is what they don’t know about painting. “Painting is the number-one thing people do to their home, and yet no one has ever taught them how,” he said in a phone interview. Santos tackles common painting problems in easy and cost-effective ways by using simple chemistry, often utilizing household items, which he refers to as “painting from the pantry.” Santos uses materials such as PAM cooking spray, chop sticks, rubber cement and plastic wrap to combat some of the issues that arise during home-improvement projects. His presentations include direct
demonstrations, while also providing quick and easy tips such as how to get the smell out of paint; simply add four drops of vanilla to the quart. “It’s what they think they know and then the reality of what it is to do a proper job,” he said. “It’s not complex; it’s just a different way to look at the problem.” As a fourth-generation painting contractor, the skills needed for home improvement projects was passed down through the years. However, Santos says the younger generation was often not taught how to do things properly. “You can’t YouTube this; you can’t Google it – you have to learn,” he said. “That’s why I do live demonstrations.” His presentations offer the how-to, but even more importantly the “why” behind the processes. Santos says his shows reveal these secrets, which gives the home improver a platform to jump from and be successful. His presentations focus on providing economically mindful tips, such as teaching how to properly store and dispose of materials. During his career of more than 25 years, Santos has been a guest on national television shows like “Good Morning America,” “Today” and HGTV’s “Smart Solutions,” along with appearances on TLC and the Discovery Channel. He has also had clients including former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, actress Doris Day, actor Clint Eastwood and Star Wars creator George Lucas.
Santos is the best-selling author of six home improvement books including “Painting Secrets,“ “Wallcovering Secrets,” “Faux Finish Secrets” and his latest book, “Painting and Wallpapering Secrets,” which will be available for purchase at the Fall Home Show. He has also contributed to Better Homes and Gardens and the Home Depot magazine. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet “The Wall Wizard” during his booth appearances at the 25th annual Fall Home Show, where he will present three seminars each day Sept. 26 and 27 at the Scheels Arena.
Santos’s first seminar, “Painting Secrets,” will uncover tips to make painting up to 400 percent faster. His second seminar, “Faux Finish Secrets,” will demonstrate how to create top trends in wall surface effects like stone, leather and wood. Lastly, audience members can ask questions about their home improvement dilemmas at “Quiz the Wiz.” “When you know the why is when you become the wizard.” See page 8 for a seminar and booth appearance schedule.

REMODELERS COUNCIL
helps plan Fall Home Show, lends efforts to charitable projects
The Remodelers Council is a committee of the Home Builders Association of F-M that deals with issues affecting the remodeling segment of the building industry. The Council was formed in 1990 and assists in planning and coordinating the Fall Home Show.
was completed in 2012, and a second is coming to fruition. The first provided a home in Fargo for a woman and her two children, and this year’s project is a Veteran Build providing a home in Moorhead to a woman and her daughter.
Council members regularly lend their efforts to charitable projects and have built handicap-accessible ramps for those in need. They also built bunk beds for the Gladys Ray Shelter.
The Council’s other major project was the RENEW (Restoring Existing Neighborhoods for Everyone’s Wellbeing) Home, a 100-year-old home that was renovated and sold to an income-eligible family. The Council teamed up with HBC and the HBA of F-M membership to remodel the home in south Fargo.
The Council, along with the HBA of F-M and its charity, Home Builders Care Foundation, has been involved with two builds with Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity. The first build

PAINTING TIPS & TRICKS
September 21, 2014
Straight from Fall Home Show featured speaker Brian Santos, The WALL WIZARD
Santos reveals a bevy of time-tested tricks that he has learned after 30 years on the job. Consider these tips:
• Bag and tag hardware in clear storage bags. As you disassemble the room for painting, drop all the switch plates into one medium plastic bag. Separate hardware for each window, door, and curtain into its own bag and mark its location in the room. Once all the hardware has been bagged, place the bags into one large bag with the room name on it, and then stick the bag on the windowpane of the room with blue tape.
• Pull the masking tape while the paint is fresh. Remove the masking materials within 45 to 60 minutes after the paint is applied and set to prevent surface tear up. The idea of masking tape is to protect surfaces from the paint, but when you slop the wet paint over the sealed masking tape and let the paint cure to hard, the paint film bonds to both the wall and the masking tape. Removing the tape after the paint dries will also remove paint from the wall or trim work.
• Use rubber cement to cover hardware. Instead of removing door hinges and handles, clean them with rubbing alcohol, and then mask them with two coats of rubber cement. The cement peels right off when finished.
• Clean water-based paint from brushes and paint pads in ten seconds. Simply remove excess paint from the brush or pad. Mix together ½ cup of fabric softener for each gallon of water, then dip a brush into the mixture, swish briskly through the water, and count to ten. Dry the brush using a paintbrush spinner. Spin the brush in a wet waste bucket. Rub the tool dry with a small towel.
• For quick touch-ups, pour a small amount of paint into a clean shoe polish bottle. The pad is perfect for small jobs. Label the bottle with the room and color; snap on the lid to store.
Painting from the Pantry Mixing vanilla with paint? Using toothpicks to repair walls? It sounds suspicious, but these and other tips are exactly what Santos recommends in his latest book, Painting and Wallpapering Secrets from Brian Santos, The Wall Wizard.
“Why spend a fortune at the home improvement store when you can find lots of nifty painting tools in your pantry?” says Santos, America’s favorite painting and wallpaper guru.
• Plastic wrap-up: Who knew something as simple as plastic wrap could create magic? Use it to cover doorknobs and keep speckles and splatters off hardware. Do the same with cordless phones. If you are painting the ceiling, press a sheet of plastic wrap over your eyeglasses. You can still see through them, but the wrap protects the lenses from paint drops.
• Oh baby! Here’s a $2 Wall Wizard solution for cleanup: Baby wipes. Think about it: These wipes are designed to clean up really big messes. The alcohol in the wipes removes any grease, grime, and dirt; the lanolin renders them nonflammable. They’re biodegradable; plus they smell better than dirty old rags.
• Party picks: Colored party toothpicks make it a snap to remount drapery hardware, towel bards, or picture hooks in a room. Pack toothpicks snugly into each hole you want to reuse. Then spackle the holes without picks. The toothpicks make the holes easy to find when it’s time to reattach the hardware. To help you fasten the hardware securely, snap off the exposed toothpicks, leaving the rest of the toothpicks inside so the screws will seat firmly into the wall.
• Give me some lip: To create a crisp line between the wall and the ceiling when cutting in, apply a light strip of lip balm around the edge of the ceiling. The paint won’t stick to the wax in the lip balm, and there is no need to remove it after the paint is dry.
• Vanilla does the trick: The Wall Wizard has been painting all his life and still does not like the smell of paint! Here’s a tip: To every quart of interior latex paint, add four drops of vanilla extract. You can also use other extracts, such as peppermint, as long as the alcohol in the ingredients is methyl alcohol, which is formulated to mix with water. Do not use perfume or other alcohol-based fragrances; they won’t mix properly with water-based paint. See The Wall Wizard’s seminar times on page 8.

FALL HOME SHOW CELEBRATES 25 YEARS Fall Home Show looks back at 25 years, changing trends in home improvement This year’s Fall Home Show marks a milestone for the event: 25 years of bringing the home building and remodeling industry to the F-M Area, courtesy of the Home Builders Association of F-M. Originally housed at West Acres Mall, the “Home Fair” eventually moved to West Fargo’s Veterans Arena, the Fargo Civic Center and, currently, calls Scheels Arena home. The Home Fair was renamed in 1990 to the Remodeling Show, and underwent another renaming in 2003 to become the Fall Home Show. Seminars were added in 1996.
Within the span of 25 years, this show has experienced much consistency, showcasing a comfortable size for consumers and an affordable exhibition rate for HBA of F-M members. The member booth rate has only increased 15 percent since 1989. It has also maintained its annual dates in late September as the industry wraps up a busy summer season and looks ahead to renovation and remodeling for the winter. In the past eight years, the Fall Home Show has broadened its focus from remodeling to home improvement and new construction.
Fun “trends” from the 1989 show guide: • Luxury is becoming more common in the bathroom, as people view it as a place for relaxing in addition to being utilitarian.
• Take out the door between the master bedroom and bath to make the spaces flow together.
• Add color (coordinated) in fixtures, laminates, tile and paints. • Develop a sense of spaciousness by mirroring walls. • Today’s home owner is bettereducated about the advantages of factory built/energy-efficient fireplaces (vs. open-hearth construction) which has increased demand for these products. • Heavy-weight fiberglass shingles that look like slate are increasingly popular in the cost-conscious segment of home owners looking to get the appearance of wood shakes or slate. • Realtor and appraiser comments on skylights vary from “pure

extravagance” to “a great return for the investment.”
• A 12.25 percent interest rate was cited in an article on home financing detailing important tax advantages to fixing up a home. These companies were listed in the first “Home Fair” guide and are still exhibitors today! • ABC Seamless • Nelson Window Company • Rusco Window Company • Twin City Garage Door • Western Products
