In addition to adopting a student, Home Builders Care Foundation, HBA of F-M, and Minnesota State Community and Technical College need the help and support of contractors and trades people from all areas. See page 29 for details. To download a student application, visit www.hbcfm.com. Guidelines are available at no cost to HBA of F-M members through the Builders Association of Minnesota. Countless hours were dedicated to creating and refining this document to provide the best possible product for builders. Guidelines are available by contacting HBA of F-M at (701) 2325846. To see the statute mandating the inclusion of building performance guidelines, visit www.revisor.mn.gov/ statutes/?id=326B.809.

HBA of F-M President’s Message HBA board accepts priorities for 2013 Strategic plan, legislative involvement, membership top the list
Each year, your HBA of F-M board of directors creates a list of priorities to Darrick Guthmiller help guide our actions. Much of what Kochmann Brothers the Association does remains consistent Homes, Inc. from year to year, but we also need to adapt and focus on issues emerging on the horizon. This year will be pivotal as we develop a strategic plan focused on the HBA’s future as a membership organization, and how its services mesh with upcoming Generation X and Y business leaders. The plan will be facilitated by a professional who is in-tune nationwide with membership issues that non-profits and membership organizations face. It will address the Association’s overall marketing plan to current members, potential members and consumers for its public events, as well as overall membership growth, education, public affairs and administrative issues. The following priorities were also approved at the January board of directors meeting:
Membership • • • •
Membership goals: 80 new members (30 Builders and 50 Associates); member retention rate of 92 percent. Focus on Builder member recruitment as well as engaging current Builders to become more involved in their Association. Build overall committee engagement from both Builders and Associates. Add regular “service spotlight” segments at board and committee meetings to give engaged members tools to promote the HBA and its services to potential members and current members who are not involved.
Public Affairs •
•
•
Continue to support and work for permanent flood protection for the metro-wide area. The biggest issue facing the area continues to be flooding: both the actual event of flooding in the spring and the strain that the threat of flooding puts on consumer confidence. Work with the North Dakota Association of Builders and the Builders Association of Minnesota to put forward a pro-housing agenda at the state legislature for each state, and garner more representation at legislative events for NDAB and BAM. Work with local jurisdictions regarding ongoing

PAC • • •
codes adoption in North Dakota and Minnesota, to develop the safest, most cost-effective building standards that allow the industry to continue building high-quality, affordable homes. In conjunction with the Builders Association of Minnesota, pursue local efforts on code changes (including a potential fire sprinkler requirement) through the administrative law judge process and through member involvement with BAM’s technical committee. Address energy code concerns during the city of Fargo’s code hearing process to adopt the 2012 I-Codes. Ensure a positive tax environment for housing, including protecting the mortgage interest deduction on a federal level. Work closely with the city officials in Dilworth, Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo to promote an environment which encourages home building. As elections bring in new faces and new ideas, the HBA will build relationships and study new ways to partner with the cities on ways to better our community. Hold Candidate Forums for elections in the cities of Moorhead and Dilworth. The Association’s goal for 2013 in total dollars raised will be, again, to top $20,000. Increase the overall percentage of members contributing by using different club levels to retain those giving from 2012 and continue building on total numbers.
HBC Charitable Arm of F-M Foundation •
Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation will conduct a strategic planning session with a facilitator well-versed in the challenges presented by Generations X and Y for membership organizations and non-profits. • Focus on a successful partnership with the Fargo Motor Patrol and its 50th Annual Fish Fry at the beginning of February as a public fundraiser for the Foundation and its mission. • 2013 will be a regrouping year as the Foundation rebuilds from the Home Builders Care Build for Habitat. These are our priorities and goals for 2013! Your HBA staff, committees and leadership have also been working on many other tasks from our current strategic plan that helped us to continue building and growing this Association. We are excited to embark on a new path to position the HBA for the future. Look for a final recap on our current threeyear strategic plan next month, and for directives from our new strategic plan this spring and summer.
Plan now to attend the HBA’s General Membership Meeting/Keynote March 14! We’ve got something special planned! See page 23.

Home & Garden Show Do’s and Don’ts:
Thank you 2013 Home & Garden Show Sponsors!
Platinum Sponsor:
Do:
• Watch for body language signals. Be attentive to what prospective customers are really saying by watching their actions. • Use open-ended questions to get a customer involved. • Create an atmosphere to get the consumer talking. The more you get them to open up, the easier it will be for them to tell you their needs and wants. • Use professional name badges. Make it easy for consumers to remember your name.
Silver Sponsor:
Sales Tip:
Wear your name tag on the right side, instead of your left. When you greet a customer or shake hands with them, it will be easier for them to see your badge.
Bronze Sponsor:
Don’t:
• Start a conversation by saying “May I help you?” If you start off with that kind of a question, the consumer is only going to say, “Oh, we’re just looking.” Then what will you say? • Knock the competition. All this does is create mistrust with your customers. Knocking the competition actually backfires and hurts you more than it does the competition. • Block entry to your display booth with tables. When you do this, you create a barrier between you and your customer. • Stand in the middle of the display booth. It prevents customers from walking in to look at your product displays, literature and photos. • Use company and industry jargon and acronyms. These terms may be very common to people within the business, but are totally foreign to consumers. By using industry jargon, you could actually intimidate the customer, by making him or her feel inadequate. See more details on the 2013 Home & Garden Show on pages 8-10.

Public Issues Report of Area Affairs HBA participates in legislative sessions, local building codes adoption process by Krista Mund, Communications Manager
With the New Year comes legislative activity in Minnesota and North Dakota. HBA of F-M leaders make a concentrated effort to be involved with both states, working with the Builders Association of Minnesota and the North Dakota Association of Builders. BAM hosted “Builder Day at the Capitol” in late January, and the HBA of F-M sent members to participate in this drive to deliver the building industry’s message to legislators. Similarly, NDAB hosts a legislative reception in early February to allow its leaders and members to discuss issues with lawmakers in Bismarck. If you are interested in getting more involved with the Association’s legislative activities, please contact the HBA at (701) 232-5846. Look for highlights from both events in the March Plains Builder. Every three years, the city of Fargo reviews the latest building codes from the International Codes Council. Hearings began last fall with review of the International Building Code covering commercial and multi-family structures. Review of the International Residential Code began last month. The HBA’s Codes Subcommittee reviews the codes, reviews potential amendments suggested by the National Association of Home Builders, meets with inspections officials and attends hearings to comment on and propose amendments. The HBA has worked with the Fargo Inspections Department to ensure applicable amendments will be carried over from the 2009 to the 2012 code. The Codes Subcommittee also identified some problem areas regarding guard rails, piping support and open protection, and worked with inspections staff to ensure amendments were included as the applicable chapters were reviewed last month. The 2012 code requires significant changes in its energy provisions. The 2009 IRC and IECC, versions currently in place, were required due to federal provisions that accompanied aid to the state. The 2009 IRC and IECC were also significant leaps in stricter energy standards. According to a cost analysis done by NAHB (and affirmed locally) the energy code updates from 2009 to 2012 would add $6,400 to the cost of a home, with little return on investment. The Codes Subcommittee members believe some changes could also result in mold and indoor air quality issues for homes built in northern climates. The energy provisions will be addressed at the Fargo Board of Appeals hearing in March.
Smoke-free law takes effect in North Dakota
In December, North Dakota’s smoke-free law took effect making all public places and workplaces smoke-free. The law will protect all people from exposure to secondhand smoke in all enclosed public places and places of employment, including: restaurants, bars, truck stops, guest rooms and common areas within hotels and motels, healthcare facilities, long-term care centers, assisted living centers, licensed adult daycare facilities, retail tobacco stores, hookah establishments, workplace vehicles and charitable gambling and gaming licensed facilities. Under the law, businesses are required to remove ashtrays from smoke-free areas and post no-smoking signage inside buildings and at all entrances where smoking is no longer allowed. In addition, smoking is no longer allowed within 20 feet of entrances, exits, operable windows, air intakes and ventilation systems of enclosed areas protected by the law. Visit www.breathend.com for additional information and tobacco-free signage templates.

Minnesota Housing launches ‘Start Up,’ ‘Step Up’ options
In December, Minnesota Housing launched new mortgage programs called “Start Up” and “Step Up,” along with down payment options that offer more flexibility than ever before. Income and purchase price limits are higher than previous programs. • Income: $73,900 to $84,985 depending on household size. • Purchase Price: $237,031 in greater Minnesota. There are options for first-time buyers, as well as homeowners who want to refinance or purchase a new home. These programs will not require special applications to Minnesota Housing nor the demographic targeting as the phased-out CASA program required. City of Moorhead staff has found the programs to be competitive with North Dakota Housing Finance Programs, though not identical. Visit www.mnhousing.gov for term sheets, a down payment loan comparison sheet and frequently asked questions.
HBA tip: Google yourself, your company
Do you ever “Google” yourself? Do it once in awhile: type your name and your company into an Internet search browser and review what is posted about you and your business online. You may be surprised at what you find. One HBA member contacted the office with this tip because she found less-thanaccurate information on a website touting itself as a consumer “rating” resource for building industry companies. You have the power to control what people read about you on the Internet.

There are a wide range of issues currently being monitored by the North Dakota Association of Builders this legislative session. NDAB’s Governmental Affairs Committee Doreen Riedman meets weekly to review bills and NDAB Executive proposals affecting our membership. Officer Some of the highlights include: • HB1029: Housing Incentive Bill which was in the Governor’s budget for $50 million. The House cut the HIF to $20 million and passed it. It now moves to the Senate where we will work with others to recover funding for the waiting list of projects. • HB1216: Regulation of Real Estate Appraisers bill would require appraiser fees to be clearly stated, and provide a $150 refund of the appraiser’s fee if there is a breach of contract (ex. late delivery of appraisal). NDAB supports this bill, along with the North Dakota Association of Realtors. • HB1225: Property Sales Price Disclosure legislation provides industry professionals with sale price information on properties, while protecting the identity of the property owners. NDAB supports this legislation. • HB1359: One-Call Notification bill would stiffen the penalties for violating this section of law, extends the use of the location from ten days to 21 days, and requires that projects be white-lined. We are working with excavators and others to ensure that residential projects are not subjected to the white-lining requirement. • SB2151: Scrap Metal Regulation legislation would require scrap dealers to get more information on sellers, and to provide payment in the form of a check or electronic transfer rather than cash. The Attorney General is leading this bill that targets the copper (and other metal) thefts taking place. NDAB supports this bill. There are many bills dealing with property taxes and assessments that we are tracking, as well as bills dealing with unemployment insurance, workers compensation, the State Building Code, public improvement bid notifications, energy conservation programs, and fire sprinkler reviews and inspections. If you would like to receive the Legislative Watch e-newsletter, please contact Doreen Riedman at doreen@ ndbuild.com.

News from the Builders Association of Minnesota Industry’s advisory code committee. However, the mandate Minnesota’s 2013 legislative was unfortunately put in the recent draft code by the session is on department at a 4,500-square-foot trigger. The code draft This year’s legislative session started Jan. 8 and must conclude by May 20 according to the constitution. With 64 new legislators, the pace of session will undoubtedly start slow. The Builders Association of Minnesota will be working hard to educate the legislature about the industry’s issues and communicate that a healthy housing industry means a healthy economy and jobs. The past few years BAM has built positive relationships with both Democrats and Republicans, rural and metro, across the state that understand our priorities. During the election season, BAM put together a list of housing-friendly candidates on both sides of the aisle and targeted those individuals for BAM-PAC donations. Of those candidates, 31 of our 37 were elected. For the first time since 1990, Democrats are in control of the House, the Senate, and the governor’s office, and so our relationships at the Capitol will be more important than ever.
Codes
In addition to the legislative session, BAM is fighting a mandate of fire sprinklers in single-family construction in the upcoming residential building code. The legislature voted overwhelmingly to remove the mandate from the code in 2011 and 2012, but was vetoed by the governor citing homeowner and fire fighter safety. It was also voted out of the code twice by the Department of Labor and
14
is slated to be published by the Department of Labor and Industry in March, after which BAM will fight the mandate in the Administrative Law Judge process. All new codes in Minnesota are enacted at the same time, and currently they are slated to go into effect in late 2013 with a beginning enforcement date of six months later - in the spring of 2014.
Get involved
We have been calling on you to get involved by contacting your legislators. We need to continue cultivating our relationships with our legislators - it is extremely important this session. • Builder Day at the Capitol: Jan. 30. This was the day for all BAM members to come together from accross the state to deliver our message to legislators. It was important to make a big statememt. Together our voices are stronger. • This Week at BAM - Featuring news from the capitol and association, “This Week at BAM” is our e-newsletter with the latest industry updates. Be sure we have your email address to stay in-the-know. • Surveys – We will be sending surveys when we need your feedback, opinions and data on legislative and regulatory issues.

News from the National Association of Home Builders energy-efficient homes in buildings with fewer than Fiscal cliff deal a net positive three floors above grade. for housing, home builders Homeowner Tax Items Jan. 8, 2013 - The fiscal cliff, an economically damaging set of tax hikes and spending reductions scheduled to begin in 2013, has been avoided — for now — and that is good news for housing in the short run. The enactment of H.R. 8, the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, will extend permanently most of the 2001/2003 tax cuts. The legislation prevents a fiscal drag of approximately $600 billion in 2013, which would have been large enough to push the current weak economy into recession. That, in turn, would have reduced demand for both owner-occupied and rental housing and threatened the ongoing recovery for home building. That outcome has been prevented, although future fiscal policy debates loom on the horizon. For example, a legislative fight over the debt ceiling and the delayed sequester will take place in February. And 2013 may be a year in which Congress finally considers comprehensive tax reform. But for now, the following items in H.R. 8 are of interest to housing and home builders:
Business Tax Items
• Permanently extends the 2001/2003 tax rates for adjusted gross income levels under $450,000 ($400,000 single). This is good news for small businesses and home builders, as 80 percent of National Association of Home Builders members are pass-through entities paying taxes on the individual side of the code. The legislation protects the vast majority of membership from business tax hikes and keeps the 15 percent rates for capital gains and dividends for income levels under $450,000 ($400,000 single). • Permanently extends the Alternative Minimum Tax patch. In a typical tax year, about five million taxpayers are subject to the AMT. The permanent patch prevents many NAHB members from facing higher tax liability and protects housing deductions and credits such as the real estate tax deduction and the 25C energy efficiency tax credit from shrinking in value. • Permanently sets the parameters of the estate tax. The legislation extends the $5 million (indexed to inflation) exemption amount set in 2010, but raises the rate of tax to 40 percent for estate value above the exemption amount. A higher exemption amount protects large numbers of small businesses. • Extends present law section 179 small business expensing through the end of 2013. The provision increases the maximum amount of depreciation and the income phase-out threshold in 2012 and 2013 to levels in effect in 2010 and 2011 ($500,000 and $2 million, respectively). This provides cash flow and administrative cost benefits for small firms. • Extends the section 45L new energy-efficient home tax credit through the end of 2013. This allows a $2,000 tax credit for the construction of for-sale and for-lease
February
• Extends through the end of 2013 mortgage debt tax relief. This is an important rule that prevents tax liability from many short sales or mitigation workouts involving forgiven, deferred or canceled mortgage debt. This will enable more short sales to move forward and reduce downward pressure on home prices. • Deduction for mortgage insurance extended through the end of 2013; extending the deduction reduces the cost of homeownership for those using PMI, FHA or VA mortgage insurance. This is particularly helpful for first-time home buyers. The deduction begins to be phased out for those earning more than $100,000 and a complete phase out is reached for households with an adjusted gross income of $110,000 or more. • Extends the section 25C energy-efficient tax credit for existing homes through the end of 2013. The tax credit is an important remodeling market incentive. It keeps the lifetime credit cap at $500. • Reinstates the Pease/PEP phase outs for deductions. For married taxpayers with adjusted gross income (AGI) above $300,000 ($250,000 single), the Pease limitation reduces total itemized deductions by 3 percent for the dollar amount of AGI above the thresholds. For example, a married couple with a $350,000 AGI would be $50,000 above the limit and must reduce their Schedule A deduction total by $50,000 multiplied by 3 percent, or $1,500. This would raise their taxes by about $500. The Pease rule will affect only a very small number of households who use the mortgage interest deduction.
Multifamily Tax Items
• Extends the 9 percent Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) rate for allocations through the end of 2013. Absent the credit fix, the LIHTC program would suffer a loss of equity investment for affordable housing projects. • Extension through the end of 2013 of base housing allowance rules for affordable housing. The military’s basic housing allowance is not considered income for purposes of calculating whether the individual qualifies as a low-income tenant. Also noteworthy are items that are not in H.R. 8, including an itemized deduction cap or a defined fast-track tax reform process. Nonetheless, the return of the Pease rule suggests that items like the mortgage interest deduction will be under debate in 2013. The resolution of the fiscal cliff now gives way to a series of mini-cliffs due to the need to raise the debt ceiling, establish government spending levels and deal with the sequester. Over the long run, the future of housing demand, and interest rates in particular, will be affected by how Congress and President Obama solve the nation’s long-run deficit challenges.

Twin City Garage Door, Inc., was founded in 1981, and is a supplier of garage doors, openers and service. Twin City Garage Door is recognized nationally as an accredited door dealer, after having met the criteria as established by Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation for door dealer excellence in the area of business management, technical knowledge and safety awareness. When asked about why he continues to support PAC, Swenson answered:
Why do you contribute to the HBA’s political action committee, NDAB-PAC?
“I contribute because you get the most for your money by supporting the NDAB-PAC. There are many lobbyist groups to support out there, but a significant portion of your money goes towards the management of the group and not towards advocating for positive legislation.”
Why is NDAB-PAC important to your business?
“The NDAB-PAC is important to Twin City Garage Door because it’s a nonpartisan committee that advocates for North Dakota.”
What is the most important benefit of having a political action committee? “Since I know the NDAB-PAC has my best interest in mind, I can watch my business while they watch Bismarck.”
What would you say to encourage others to contribute?
“If housing is important to you and your business, contributing to the NDABPAC is a no-brainer.”

PAC funds are split three ways to be used nationally, statewide and locally. Each dollar raised helps elect friendly candidates at all three levels of government. A portion of your contribution is passed along to BUILD-PAC, the National Association of Home Builders’ Political Action Committee, one of the most recognized and well-respected PACs in Washington, D.C. Another portion of your contribution is earmarked for contributions to candidates for local, county, and other elections. Most importantly, local Association members decide who to support in local elections to help elect those candidates most friendly to the housing industry. NAHB efforts on storm water to save builders more than $1 billion annually
In a victory for both the environment and housing affordability, the National Association of Home Builders, the Wisconsin Builders Association and the Utility Water Act Group settled a longstanding lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency after the agency agreed Stella Stormwater on Dec. 21 to withdraw its proposal to place numeric EPA Storm Water limits on the amount of sediment in storm water that runs Enthusiast off a construction site. The lawsuit had noted that complying with EPA’s numeric limit would cost at least $10 billion a year nationwide for all types of construction and it would be impossible to set a numeric limit that would work across all geographic areas and soil types. All told, the decision means that home builders and developers will save almost $1.2 billion a year in compliance costs. For more than 10 years, NAHB and its members have been closely involved in EPA’s efforts to develop a new storm water rule for the construction industry. “NAHB supports responsible development and the goals of the Clean Water Act. We are relieved that the agency is taking a common-sense approach to this rulemaking, and the association will continue to work with state and federal regulators to keep our waterways clean,” said NAHB Chairman Barry Rutenberg, a home builder from Gainesville, Fla. In addition, EPA has agreed to clarify the non-numeric portion of the rule so that land developers, permit writers and inspectors better understand what measures are required to keep storm water and sediment from entering the nation’s waterways. “NAHB will continue to educate its members about the importance of regulatory compliance as they build new homes,” Rutenberg said. “At the same time, we will remain vigilant about the costs of compliance and help ensure that the money is well spent – because the cost is reflected in the price of a new home.” Next steps on storm water regulations: • EPA proposal for revised rule due by April 15 • 30-day (or more) window for public comments • Final rule due by Feb. 28, 2014

An entry may be occupied by the Builder provided it was completed after January 1, 2012. • Builders must include their contractor’s license with the Parade entry form. • Only a Builder’s signature will be accepted on the Parade entry form. • Builders must submit full-color, 3D renderings of each home model. If the Builder does not have access to these services, BuilderFusion can assist in creating a full-color rendering at a fee of $300 per model. • No late entries will be accepted and no late fees will be assessed. • Only completed homes may be open during the Parade.

HBA of F-M General Membership Meetings New Year Celebration & Installation by Alison Streyle, Events Coordinator
The HBA of F-M kicked off 2013 with a fun evening for the New Year Celebration and Installation Jan. 10 at the Ramada Plaza and Suites. Our very own Jason Eid, Eid-Co Buildings, Inc., the 2013 North Dakota Association of Builders president, installed the 2013 HBA of F-M board of directors and officers. It was wonderful to have one of Fargo’s own doing the installation. 2012 HBA of F-M President Terry Becker, Terry Becker Construction, LLC, installed the Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation’s president and board of trustees. It is always great to get these two leadership groups together to say thank you and recognize all they do for the Association and Foundation. To make the night fun for everyone attending, there was a photo booth set up to take silly pictures with New Year’s accessories. Also, to celebrate the end of the NHL lockout, many members took part in a hockey contest. Prizes were awarded to Ken Krajsa, Bell State Bank & Trust for the funniest photo booth picture, and to Dustin Murray, Dustin Murray Construction, for winning the shoot-out in the hockey game. See photos below and on pages 21-22. Thank you to Chase Realty for sponsoring the evening. On behalf of the sponsor, a $50 Scheels gift card was given to Clay Dietrich, Dietrich Homes, Inc. HBA of F-M Builder and Associate Member Feature Kiedrowski Construction LLC Dakota Gypsum Small, family-owned business provides quality and client satisfaction
Company adapts to constant change with over 25 years of experience
by Mariah Wenaas, Communication & Office Coordinator
by Mariah Wenaas, Communication & Office Coordinator
Christian Kiedrowski started his business in the winter of 2005, while still in college. The company’s original focus was on new home concrete and framing, and steel building construction. His first job was a contract for an office building in Wyoming. He handled the general contracting and performed the concrete and framing with a crew of four employees. “I didn’t have a shop or office at the time. The project went great and I ended up going back three years later to do an addition,” says Kiedrowski. Kiedrowski is originally from northern Minnesota and moved to Fargo as a child. He attended Fargo North High School, and went on to study biology and construction management at Minnesota State University Moorhead. His first experience in the construction industry was during college while working on a concrete crew, which is what inspired him to start Above: Joseph and his own company. For Kiedrowski, coKiedrowski, the next owners of Kiedrowski three years were spent Construction. traveling the country building foundations and constructing custom steel-framed homes and buildings. “I was fortunate to gain the experience of doing projects from Florida to California and Washington to New York. This was quite an opportunity for a kid in his mid-20s, and I loved the challenge and being able to see the country,” Kiedrowski says. Kiedrowski acknowledges that he learned a lot while traveling, but eventually came back to Fargo to settle down. Being a small, family-owned business sets Kiedrowski Construction apart from the competition. Kiedrowski and his brother, Joseph, decided to start a partnership early last year and are now equal owners. Christian’s wife, Sara, also works for the company, managing the office and handling accounting and payroll. Another aspect making Kiedrowski Construction unique is that it operates two crews. “Every project is executed with either me or my brother on the job. This ensures quality control and allows us to pay attention to detail,” Christian says. “We take pride in our work and strive to maintain our reputation as a Kiedrowski continued on page 36

Dakota Gypsum, a division of Jarick Products Co., Inc., was founded in 1985 by Jack Greenwood and Rick Fryhling. They were both between jobs at the time and decided that it would be a good time to start their own company. Although they worked the first five years without much support from a bank, they did survive and were eventually able to get a loan from the Small Business Administration which helped them venture into the drywall supply business. Greenwood is a Minnesota State University of Moorhead graduate with a degree in business. He has 50 years of experience in the building supply business in retail, wholesale and as a business owner. Although its original focus was on supplying building materials to contractors, Dakota Gypsum now specializes in drywall products, cold-rolled structural steel and accessories, and insulation. One aspect that sets Dakota Gypsum apart Below: Dakota from the rest of the industry is Gypsum’s office at its service-oriented approach 1425 43rd St. NW in to customers; also, its staff Fargo. is very knowledgeable about products it sells. Greenwood has been aware of the HBA for many years, and decided to become a member so that he could gain contact with potential customers. According to Greenwood, one of the biggest challenges facing the industry is constant change of materials, practices and techniques, and the ups and downs of the economy. “To deal with this, you must change your mode of operation, and react to the changes in your market,” says Greenwood. He is excited for the future because of the introduction of lighter-weight gypsum and the new emphasis on soundcontrol products. He loves that the construction industry is ever-changing, and says, “The day you believe you know it all, is the day that you should get out of the industry.” Greenwood advises anyone who is interested in the industry to be open-minded and to learn its many factors, including manufacturing, suppliers, builders, regulations, commercial construction, developers and finance. He says, “If you understand how the industry functions, you will enjoy the industry. Dakota Gypsum 1425 43rd St. NW • Fargo, N.D. 58107 (701) 282-0470 • www.dakotagyp.com

2305 Great Northern Dr. • Fargo, N.D. 58102 (701) 237-6559
Lumber Yard; Roofing Contractor, Supplier; Truss & Component Manufacturing; Building Suppliers
What is your company’s focus?
“We are a wholesale supplier of commodity and specialty wood products.”
What is the latest trend in your business/ industry?
“The latest trend in the industry is electronics. The base of our communication is still the telephone, but that is going the way of the dinosaur. With market conditions changing as fast as they are, you need to get the information out to as many customers as you can, as quickly as possible. Obviously, the fastest way to do that is the computer.”
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the industry today and how are you dealing with it?
“Aside from transportation, our biggest challenge is sourcing quality building products to bring to the marketplace. Over the past several years, the slow housing economy has closed or consolidated many lumber and plywood mills, taking several million board and square feet of production out of the market which makes it hard to find the quality, shipment time and tally needed.”
D & M Roofing Company • Jon Vikander 1405 4th Ave. N. • Fargo, N.D. 58102 (701) 237-6494 What is your company’s focus?
“We focus on residential and commercial re-roof projects, along with siding, gutters, soffit and fascia replacement.”
What is the latest trend in your business/ industry?
“The latest trend in the industry is going green. We recycle a big majority of our asphalt shingles that can be removed from the residential homes. Border Area Paving is a drop-off partner in the recycle process. This helps to avoid many tons of debris from going into the landfill.”
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the industry today and how are you dealing with it?
“One of the challenges we face is working directly with insurance agents, adjusters and the homeowners during a loss due to damage. Insurance companies can sometimes have a different opinion than homeowners as to what is damaged and needs replacement. D & M Roofing has to balance both sides to make them happy.”

Fall Home Show moves to new venue for 2013: Scheels Arena The HBA of F-M has officially moved the Fall Home Show to the Scheels Arena at 5225 31st Ave. S., Fargo! With a new start in 2013, the HBA wants to get its membership 100 percent behind it to put a new face on the event. This show is very valuable to the Association’s members, community and industry. Although this show is smaller than the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show, it attracts serious consumers who are looking to make appointments and make decisions on projects they’ve been thinking about and planning. This event is something that the Association and all its members should be supporting in order to keep the show on its feet and to continue this consumer one-stop shop for building and remodeling needs. In the past, this event has been labeled as a “remodeling” show, but this focus has changed over the years and it now offers more. Relocating the show is a great opportunity to re-brand and make it what members envision, as well as what consumers expect to find when walking through the doors. This show is for builders, remodelers and all other facets of the industry: windows, garages, landscaping, finance, etc. Please participate and support your Association in getting the Fall Home Show back on track and make it a fullservice home show for the community to enjoy and the industry to grow. The Fall Home Show organizers want and need your support. Plan ahead for the 2013 Fall Home Show, Sept. 27-28 at the Scheels Arena!

company.” Hegvik became active with the group to involve herself in the HBA and get to know her fellow members. The Remodelers Council is a committee of the HBA that deals with issues affecting the remodeling segment of the building industry. Meetings are held approximately every other month for networking, informative sessions and conducting council business. The Council was formed in 1990 and assists in planning and coordinating the Fall Home Show and Remodeled Home Tour. Council members regularly lend their efforts to charitable projects and build handicap ramps. “This group is a good example of how individuals in a community can come together to help others and do good things for the area as a whole,” Hegvik says. A project Hegvik is most proud of is the Association’s newest public event, the Remodeled Home Tour, which started last fall.

Staff Corner: HBA welcomes new team members by Krista Mund, Communications Manager
The HBA of F-M has some new faces! Membership Coordinator Allison Weckman started working at the Association in October. Her responsibilities include recruiting and retaining members and implementing the HBA’s membership programs. She also works to build the volunteer base for the HBA’s committees and programs and communicate services and benefits to current and potential members. Weckman is a North Dakota State University graduate earning a bachelor’s degree in mass communication. Originally Mariah from Fargo, she previously Wenaas with her worked for the Rochester husband, Area Chamber of Commerce Ryan. as its events coordinator and was membership director for the Rochester Golf & Country Club. She is married to Kory Weckman, also an NDSU graduate, who is a mechanical engineer at IBM. They have a two-year-old son, Nolan. In her spare time, Weckman likes to shop, bake and watch movies. She is also a die-hard Bison football fan, loves 80s music and is training for her first 5K in March. Our most recent addition is Communication & Office Coordinator Mariah Wenaas. She started at the HBA last month and is a University of North Dakota graduate where she earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design technology.
She helps coordinate various HBA publications (including the Plains Builder), assists with print projects and the Association’s education program, answers the telephone and provides clerical and organizational support to members and staff. Wenaas is originally from Devils Lake, N.D., and moved to Fargo a little over a year ago. She is married to Ryan Wenaas, also a UND graduate, who has a bachelor’s degree in math and a master’s in math Allison education. They adopted a cat Weckman named Digits in August of 2011, with her and are always entertained by son, him. Nolan, and In her spare time, Wenaas husband, likes to play games, watch Kory. movies, and try out all different kinds of crafts - from sewing to crocheting and making jewelry to painting. She loves many types of music, especially acoustic, and is a big Sioux hockey fan. Wenaas replaced Kirsten Rosenow who moved to St. Louis Park, Minn., to be closer to friends and family. Rosenow now works at E&M Consulting which is involved with selling booth space at the HBA’s home shows and coordinates the Association’s bi-annual development map. The Association also said goodbye to Rocky Schneider at the end of December and is in the process of filling the public affairs coordinator position. Schneider took a job as public affairs strategist for AE2S (Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services) which is a civil/environmental consulting engineering firm that provides primarily water, wastewater and storm water services to clients in the Upper Midwest. We look forward to crossing paths with both Rosenow and Schneider in the future and wish them all the best!

“It’s been fun to help plan this event and see the terrific response to it,” she says. “The next Remodeled Tour will be in conjunction with the Fall Parade of Homes in September 2013, so please come out and support that event. We hope to see a terrific turnout at the Home & Garden Show this month as well!” In her spare time, Hegvik is busy with her two sons, Oliver (age four) and Dexter (almost two), and her husband Shawn. She also enjoys cooking, spending time outside, golfing or “attempting to be a runner.” Favorite service provided by the HBA/NDAB/ NAHB: The Red River Valley Home & Garden Show. The Extra Mile Award is an honor created in 2000 by the HBA staff to recognize volunteers who always seem to be “going the extra mile” for the Association. Every two months, the staff chooses a “Member of the Month” to be featured in the Plains Builder. The “Extra Mile Award” winner is then chosen from these candidates at the end of the year. Those named “Member of the Month” show dedication to the HBA by doing all or most of the following: • Volunteering to work behind the scenes to make events/activities better. • Consistently supporting HBA events by sponsoring or attending. • Promoting the HBA to non-members in a favorable light. • Being open to additional tasks and willing to answer questions and offer guidance. • Being active in committee or board work for the HBA.

company that stresses quality and client satisfaction. I’m a perfectionist and I can’t walk away from a job that doesn’t meet my standards.” Although the original focus was on new-home concrete and framing, and steel-building construction, Kiedrowski Construction now focuses more on agricultural construction. It does concrete foundations and flatwork for buildings, grain bins and grain handling systems. Christian and Joseph work with project owners and engineers to help design foundations for custom projects. However, they still do some residential or commercial foundations and flatwork. Their framing crew does steel erection and wood framing, and are capable of everything from steel buildings to complex custom home framing. Kiedrowski Construction has just finished its best year and aims to pursue interests in the local residential and commercial markets. Christian loves being outdoors and having a change of scenery with each new job that he does. He also enjoys meeting new people in the industry and interacting with project owners. “I feel it is gratifying to see a job completed and to walk away with a happy and satisfied client,” he says. According to Christian, one of the challenges facing the
36
industry today is sustainability. “Ás an outdoor enthusiast, I am also an environmentalist. The construction industry traditionally has a bad rep in respect to being green. It has come a long way, but in my opinion, still has far to go,” he says. The three areas he is most interested in are reducing construction waste, developing new environmentally friendly materials, and incorporating more natural space in developments. Although there are many economic barriers to overcome, Kiedrowski Construction is becoming more aware of the issues, and that is a great start. Christian first heard about the HBA through friends and colleagues in the industry. He said they had good things to say which prompted him to do research, and eventually join the HBA. Although he hasn’t had a chance to get involved yet, he is interested in joining the public issues committee, and playing in the Golf Outing. He sees the HBA as an opportunity for Kiedrowski Construction to be an active member of the community and as an avenue in which they are able to contribute.
